So sad this beautiful production will be retired. I saw this 2 times at Covent Garden once with P. Domingo and once with J. Carreras! Fonf, still cherished memories.
There is nothing in the libretto or the storyline to substantiate Netrebro's statement relating to Mimi's intention. Puccini's juxtapostion of Rodolfo's statement that he is not in the mood to work on his assignment and Mimi's immediate entrance thereafter suggests that Rodolfo needs a woman in his life. Puccini himself makes the connection between Rodolfo and Mimi. Comments such as these may be found in my blog 'Psychodynamic Opera'. Some may find them interesting and even helpful to understanding the relationship between music and libretto in Opera.
This production is retired so you won't be forced to watch. It lasted for something like thirty years and people were prepared to pay to see and i can tell you it sold out quickly.
You might find Sally Potter's feminist reworking of the opera more interesting, her first film Thriller from 1979 (available as an extra on the DVD of The Gold Diggers). It's not bourgeois or boring!
La Boheme has all the emotions and passion in the music

Introduction for people
