This clip discusses WHAT La Boheme is about, but it says nothing of HOW Puccini brings his story across. This is hardly if ever, brought up in discussions on opera. We forget or disregard that the composer uses music as his working tool in order to tell a story - his story. Question Act III. Why does Puccini write a semitone in the phrase: "Mimi e una civetta" and a short while later writes an interval of a fourth to the phrase: "Invan, invan nasconda..."? This is NOT a trivial question. Puccini focuses on a human response and the change is intended to make a statement about Rodolfo. In over sixty years of listening to opera, I have never heard or read a reference to the issue of the composer addressing the human condition in musical terms. I would appreciate a response to my comment. Thank you.
