Yes, Grandpa would be proud! Your planning, fab and install skills are a definite plus for all these projects.
Your math is correct on the chute ratchet mechanism. The key factors could be the depth between teeth plus a radius for each tooth ramp. Changing the fulcrum point on the ratchet mechanism has merit plus it's relatively easy to try but could weaken the factory bar.
Every project shows your concern for the welfare of the animals plus your own safety. Well done!

I like videos with all the fixing going on as I'd rather fix than buy new. With house remodels, the fixing eventually ends. But I don't think you'll ever be at the end of your "honey do list" and for me, it's a good thing because I like spending time with you, the dogs, cats, cows and other animals. Love how you say “that’s an easy fix” just started watching and I enjoy all the different things you can and have to do to run your ranch. Your family is adorable. I’m a woman and enjoy watching you figure out how to fix animals and problems around the ranch.

3 things that I’m wondering about. 1 - why not put those nuts on the gate that you want to cut, why not just turn them around to face in, instead of out and you maybe wouldn’t need to cut them. And 2 - won’t that latch be hit when the cows are going into that alleyway? As you mentioned it’s tight and I could see that they would probably bump it, at least it appeared that way on the video. 3 - just my thought that the squeeze chute lever would be a better way to go because you’d still be using the same gear ⚙️ and have the same strength. 🤷🏻♀️ I think you could go either way, but there is a lot more figuring with having to make a new gear and it wouldn’t be as strong. Hmm 🤔

The coral is certainly and amazingly more functional now, for both you and the cow. Grandpa would be so proud, (or IS depending on your belief system) the transformation is incredible. It’s been great fun to watch you create it and also think like a cow. You and your cow brain seem to have perfect logic. Fun part is you have way more things to apply that logic too and for us to watch. Lookin forward to it!

Tyler, I think instead of focusing on the teeth on that locking mechanism, I think you should examine the circumference of the part which actually affects the squeeze motion. If you make it less circular or shorten the circumference it won't close the head gate 3 inches with each notch on that circular plane. You can achieve a more gradual squeeze without the chance of finer teeth slipping and releasing the head gate. I will send you an email with a diagram explaining how to achieve. After continuing the video I would go with reducing the swing of the door by drilling those holed you mentioned - that's a better idea.
Agree 100%. Not only would it be easier to change the pivot points, the risk of failure (if the smaller teeth slip under pressure) would be much less.

Moving those holes should be a lot easier to try first! I believe it's linear to the center where it pivots, ie if you halve the distance to the center it should halve the headgate travel.
Suggestion: Paint! Measure the average height of a cow's eye from the ground. Then paint a solid stripe centered at that height starting at the beginning of the solid boards where a cow would enter, and continue along the new plywood on the gate, then to the corrugated metal and all the way to where the trailer waits to be loaded. Make the stripe wide enough so that animals of different height see a enough of the stripe that it can act as a guide. Maybe 18 inches wide. And it should be visually continuous so that there are no breaks in the paint job, particularly at the corner of the building where the gate meets the corner and there is a 2X6 board attached to the building. The idea is to visually fool the beasts into thinking that this is a smooth path all the way to the trailer, and to obscure the distractions at that choke point. While you are doing that, you might use some spray foam in the corner of the corrugated metal joints. A cow might be thinking WASPS! as she approaches.
For the bolts holding the latch on the gate, you can just reverse the bolt with the nuts on the other side. Your Grandfather is proud of your improvements. 👍👍👍👍👍

Tyler, I know I said it before, but I want to say it again as I was watching this video, I truly appreciate you, your videos, your work ethic, as well as your frugal much!! I am always in awe of how you make things fixed and work together by using what you have on hand, and unlike many people you are not Running to town to go buy new stuff, but actually using up what you have on the ranch. Truly, my dad and my grandfather was the same way. One thing it wasn’t convenient use of time to be running into town, and as my father said, and I bet your grandpa said, “time is money “. Therefore, running into town to buy something that you could find probably somewhere in one of the sheds or the barn, That was saving time and money!
As I watched you fixing the gate and you commented about how you wished your grandfather could see what you were doing, and that you finally solve the problems on an issue that he had struggled with him that you wish he was alive to see that you would finally fix it and I have the same thoughts for my father. He’s been gone almost 25 years and my sister and her husband bought the land after my mother passed away, which was in there will… so many changes have been made and so much improvement and that is how it should be. But I think of like you were saying, it would’ve been so nice if my father would’ve had some of those automatic tools, and one thing that I see people putting in at their farms and ranches, is the automatic gate openers so that you don’t have to get out of your vehicle. What a timesaver that is an I would’ve loved my Dad to have had that. I had a classmate whose father was very rich and live down the road from us and of course there were 12 children in my family at my mom and dad works so hard to put the new property together and it was beautiful by the time, they both passed away from all their work. My dad helped my grandpa grandma and his brother as well. Plus he worked full-time. My classmate said that he asked his dad one time. What is my dad works so hard… He’s always going up and down the road somewhere to work no matter what time of day it was. I would’ve loved for my dad not to have to work so hard, but the truth is, he did what he loved at the end of his life, especially the last 25 years… Which was strictly farming and ranching …
I guess that’s the way it supposed to be that each generation has it a little easier a little better but like you, I find myself wishing for things for my dad and mom. My mom didn’t even have a automatic washer and dryer or dishwasher till most of the children were out of the house . And she did at least 10 to 15 loads of laundry every day and she hung them out on the clothesline and many of our clothes were ironed so you know yes she had children that helped her but she did a lot of it yourself and she made homemade food for us every single meal. She was a good cook and baker and we were blessed to have that foundation for my mom… Sometimes technology isn’t always the best and I am referring to fast foods. I’ll take all that produce and farm raised meat that we had growing up any day. The older ones would pull out money and we did get mom and dad money to go out to eat or go someplace and one night we got a dinner and a movie ticket in before the dinner was even finished. They didn’t buy dessert and they didn’t go to Movie. They were back home and we were shocked and they both said they really appreciate it. I thoughtfulness, but they just didn’t feel comfortable wasting that kind of money lol… They went through the depression, and their perspective was different than ours, but the one thing we did do before daddy passed away it was sent him to Nashville Tennessee to the grand old Opry and boy if that wasn’t a winner of a trip for them, my father did not like to talk on the telephone hard to get him to stop talking about that trip. That was just awesome and I guess that was one of the best things we did for them but I’m sure you have thoughts like that yourself so thank you Tyler again for all that I learned from you and I was shocked when you said by the way, 3 inches on movement when you were working with the cattle in that shoot that is a lot of movement try to push on a huge animal, weighing thousands of pounds and fighting against you you know your grandpa’s with you as you do all of that stuff God bless you and keep doing the wonderful work you do. Thank you for taking time to make these videos. I may be a girl, but my dad went to Construction and Bill houses and I loved being his helper and I studied architecture because of him. Have a great week .…too bad it’s getting cold.

Tyler, I think a corner flashing would stop cattle catching the sharp edges of the corrugated iron. Just a thought….would neaten up that whole corner seeing you’ve put in a big effort with the gate. Loving your videos here in Australia!
Nice finished gate and latch. The one lag screw probably needs a deeper pilot hole.
Over the years I quit using 1/4 inch lag and somewhat so on 3/8 lags.. The small diameter often just breaks off.. too much tork.. So I gave them up and only use 1/2 inch lags.. The do the job and never break from tork. Ha. I like to over build. It lasts and lasts.. I always like that you make things work.. you seems to enjoy that and I am sure many do to. Ha. Might want to add some plastic string, cables, or bungee cords to the latch as it can be a pinch point. I’ve got several latches like this and you know how unpredictable cows in a confined situation can be. My strings go from the top of latch to above the gate on the wall.

Great video. I have one of those latches and sometimes it sticks when you go to open it one way or the other. I just push or pull down a little on the gate and it opens no problem. No need to grind down the pin.

I agree with someone else on flipping the bolts on the gate. If the placement of the latch becomes a problem, could you weld some more tabs on like the existing one, use those tabs to bolt to post. That should offset your latch closer to edge.

Make your adjustments to the bottom as you planned first and the remeasure your travel. Then adjust the top pivots and check that. That may be all you need to do.

The 2 bolts that you was going to cut off with the grinder, because you said to keep the cows from rubbing into it, at the latch.. You can also turn the bolts around. ❤ Less❤ work❤
That would work, except they would be sticking out when they are against the other wall of the loading chute.
@@terrypotter4779 Just remember about the gate swinging both ways. It swings against the wooden fence also.😢.using the grinder is the best tool to use at this point.Turning the bolts the same way as the carriage bolts it just looks cleaner.❤ thank you ❤
I would consider moving the pivot points instead of remanufacturing the gear. I would think the grip of the gear may not lock in when moved with more teeth

Good ideas for the headgate but if you change the swing it also won't open as wide which could be a problem for those bigger cows exiting the chute.
Be careful when you make that new ratchet, looks like the cast one had about an 1/2” of tooth for latching and the new one may only have 1/4 inch of bite latching and softer metal. That’s taking away a lot of strength in my opinion
2 suggestions. 1) is the metal at corner of barn a possibility for cutting a cow, since it appears to be sticking out a little bit.
2) would you need to make all the teeth on ratchet 2" or just the ones closer to where the problem is for making it easier to get tightness you want per cow?
