      Also, there were a lot of us who absolutely HATED Adric. Not only did they kill a companion, they killed a companion that wasn't well liked, and they made us feel for him when they did it. I genuinely regretted how much I disliked the character at the end of this.

  • @robertbrown569
    @robertbrown569 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Yes, the Cybermen's gold allergy is established in an earlier story, and Adric's gold-rimmed badge (for mathematical excellence) was always there, so they weren't just inventing convenient plot resolutions, but using pre-established facts. Early Cybermen had a lot more of the original human body in their exo-suits than New Who Cybermen were depicted as having, and the transparent jaw section on these "Earthshock" models was deliberately designed to suggest that.
    Everyone's right about not watching "The Five-ish Doctors Reboot" until after "The Day of The Doctor", because of minor spoilers - but you should definitely watch "The Night of the Doctor" and "The Last Day" before it, as they both set up the anniversary special. You can watch "An Adventure in Space and Time"(which your dad will greatly appreciate) at any point.

    While this is an excellent Cyberman story, the Cyberman Leader does have a lot of emotion in it

    • @whobp8
      @whobp8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of the Cybermen stories of the 70's and 80's have this failing. It's as if they forgot about this aspect of the Cybermen. I appreciate that it's been reincorporated in Modern Doctor Who as I think it makes them more creepy as adversaries

    • @JohnAShort
      @JohnAShort 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my head cannon it is just that these Cybermen have such an advanced programme for communications with humans that their speech and body movements have the appearence of emotion... but they are not FEELING that emotion. It is like a computer generated voice that had been given the appearence of emotion to better to communicate with us - but you wouldn't imagine the computer is expriencing the emotion.

    • @whobp8
      @whobp8 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ghostgaming No. Because the 60's Cybermen were emotionless and in stories like Earthshock the Cybermen specifically talk about the advantage they have in being emotionless, even as they gloat over victories, pound their fists in frustration, crush a radio in anger, exclaim in surprise etc. It's the same actors playing various Cyber Leaders and lieutenants in all the 80's stories, so they're making an acting choice that's inconsistent with the character they're supposed to be playing, but none of the directors they work with are going, "Wait! That's not quite right!". Or, "Tone down the emotion! More cold and machine-like! ". It's unfortunate in that they're telling us one thing about the Cybermen, but showing another

    • @whobp8
      @whobp8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ghostgaming Tom Baker was still actively the Doctor when I started watching Doctor Who so I wouldn't really classify myself as a modern fan and to be honest, I initially thought the characterization was off when I originally watched this in 1982. It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the episode in any major way, but I do notice when the Cyber Leader expounds how the Cybermen are superior because they've eliminated their emotions and two seconds later excitedly proclaims, "Doctor!! My army awakes!". It's like introducing a character and saying, "This is the famous French detective Inspector Jaques Clouseau, he's just flown in from Paris." and then Clouseau says, "Si Senor! I am from France. Buenos Tardes! Can you help me with my luggage por favor?"

    • @Indigo_Polarity
      @Indigo_Polarity 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      whobp8 I’ve always had the head canon that Cyber-leaders and Controllers are built with looser emotional inhibitors, giving them a greater capacity for creativity and making them better strategists. They lack compassion, sentimentality or sadness, but they have a certain amount of malice that regular cybermen lack. The leader in Earthshock recognised the Doctor’s emotional connection to his companions and used it against him. A normal Cyberman would likely dismiss it. There are elements of this in NuWho too. The Controller in series 2 was arrogant and had a god complex.

    I love your Dad's reaction when you explain to him that the Doctor is wearing a sprig of celery in his lapel. 😄. The fact that gold is potentially lethal to Cybermen is established in a story between Tomb of the Cybermen and Earthshock. It's an idea that's been effectively abandoned in modern Who because it becomes overused in Classic Who, to the point where gold to Cybermen is like garlic to vampires, and it makes the Cybermen seem too weak and easily defeated. (It's also why the Eighth Doctor has bags of gold dust in the TARDIS, which the Master uses to bribe the kid from Chinatown in the TV movie) The Cybermen's chins are deliberately made from see through perspex so you can see the actors mouth moving. The idea was to suggest there was still some organic component inside and theoretically make them seem creepier. This story is a rare example of the production team managing to keep something secret from fans. Everyone who watched at the time was surprised by the appearance of the Cybermen, as there had been no advance publicity about their inclusion and (unusually) no leaks. The wooden TARDIS control room you saw in The Deadly Assassin was improperly stored between Seasons Fourteen and Fifteen, and subsequently got wet causing the wood to warp, which is why they reverted to the classic control room seen here. To be fair, in Genesis of the Daleks the Fourth Doctor is agonizing not over taking a single life, but commiting genocide by wiping out an entire species.

    Its certainly one of the 5th Doctors better stories although I would say the Caves of Androzani is the best and was voted the greatest Doctor Who story ever made. Its a great way for a companion to go out with a bang. The Cybermen were originally humanoid. The reason we see some glimpses of human flesh is because they are still partly organic and as time goes by the machinery takes over more and more. I prefer the original Cybermen because they have a more creepy look about them. Loved your reactions.

    Ok so this isn't really major spoilery just talking about their design and why but the design of the cybermen where you see their mouth that is supposed to be like that see in the original story they first appear in they had human hands in that design to show how they used to be human or in this case mondasian which is basically humans from earths twin planet mondas in their next appearances like Tomb Of The Cybermen and ahead they seemed more robotic and for their return in Earthshock the maker of this design wanted to go back to the old routs in a way so for seeing their mouths in the helmet is the element to show their peice of what was human in there

  • @ftumschk
    @ftumschk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The cybermen are part flesh-and-blood and part machine - indeed, these costumes with the translucent chins were purposely designed to show that there are faces behind the masks. Modern Doctor Who made a mistake IMHO by making them basically robots, stomping around in formation. Despite the machinery, and despite the lack of emotions, they're still individual beings.

      I was thinking that Rose, and I think Donna as well, at least, got different outfits sometimes. For the others you can perhaps assume that they like a particular style and stick with it. Maybe Nyssa has a dozen purple frocks and just rotates them. But Tegan literally wears the same clothes she had when she first walked into the Tardis and never changes until she gets back to earth. Now I think about it Martha was mostly in that leather jacket and I can't honestly remember much of what Amy wore. It wasn't her outfit that drew attention.

    Having watched your reaction (I'm going to get around to your comments shortly) here are a few thoughts:
    Adric had been with the Doctor since the third story of the previous (Tom Baker) season. He sort of stowed away.
    The character,it must be said,was never really liked - he was very brattish and whiny,and Mathew Waterhouse wasn't the strongest of actors. Nevertheless,his death shook the fan community back in 1982.
    Tegan is an air ste...oh sorry: 'member of the cabin crew' is the correct term to use nowadays.
    The story was written by Eric Saward,soon to be the series showrunner and/or script editor. You can always identify his scripts - fast moving;going from moment to moment;many deaths.
    This was one of the first stories to incorporate footage from earlier in the shows run. Back then,viewers would not have actually had access to the earlier eras (they had yet to be released on video to the general public);so for many,that glimpse of the second doctor would have been many fans first experience of him. So different to now,when they are no more than a mouse click away.
    There was one more story after this one in season 19. Yes.

    To answer a few questions:
    Adric is originally from *"E-Space"* (a parallel/pocket universe).
    He stayed for approx. 1½ seasons, from "Full Circle" in mid S18 (Tom Bakers last season) to this, the penultimate serial of S19.
    (Nyssa & Tegan also both debuted at the end of Toms run.)
    Adric's somewhat of a genius (hence the badge) BUT also _a teenager_ ... which leads to banter/arguments with the 4th/5th Doctor.
    Sometimes likeable, sometimes not ... fandom surely isn't exactly _full_ of Adric love but I think Matthew Waterhouse mostly did a pretty good job.
    The Cybermen returning _was indeed_ a surprise (as was Adrics death)!
    According to Waterhouse (in a foreword for the german Mediabook), John Nathan-Turner (producer at the time) even declined an offer from Radio Times (listings magazine) that wanted to promote the serial by putting the Cybermen on their cover because JNT wanted the audience to be surprised (& not spoiled by such a promo)!
    While yes, this would've been a great season finale, unfortunately it isn't. It's followed up by one ... _not too good_ story called "Time-Flight". You can save the time of watching the whole thing & just watch RadioDeadAir . coms funny review on it: vimeo.com/260027639
    The Cybermen are human(oid)s that started to enhance/repair/upgrade their bodies to fit their hostile surrounding.
    It is unclear how much of that original body is still in those suits. Depends on the story.
    Once you've seen all the Cybermen stories (& maybe listened to "Spare Parts" open.spotify.com/album/5P3s705CiB6qOqGhUGEKol ) you'll see there is no definitive answer.
    There are some with only brains & nerves (proably) & others where you know for sure there's definitely still (big parts of) a body underneath.
    The gold "allergy" was introduced during Tom Bakers run (iirc) & this here surely wasn't the most ridiculous use of that (by far)!
    Hartnell _did_ face the Cybermen in [SPOILERS] "The Tenth Planet" (S4).
    Troughton had 3 Cyber-stories [SPOILERS] The Moonbase (S4), Tomb of the Cybermen (S5) & The Invasion (S6).
    Pertwee never faced the Cybermen during his run.

  • @julessherwood

    Adric first appears with Tom Baker in Full Circle, Nyssa appears in Keeper of Traken and Tegan joins in Logopolis which is Tom Bakers Final season. Tegan is the 5th Doctors longest serving companion. The final story for Peter Davisons first season is Time Flight. His first story is Castrovalva, Four to Doomsday, Kinda, The Visitation, Black Orchid, Earthshock and finally Time Flight. This isn't the only companion to be killed in classic who, back in the first doctors era there was a companion called Katerina so it has been done but Adrics death was to show that traveling with the Doctor can be fun but there are consequences. Revenge of the Cyberman with Tom Baker went to destroy the planet of Voga the Planet of Gold so if you had watched classic who in order then you would have known this weakness for the Cyberman.

    There really were shocks in Earthshock. They didn't announce that Adric was leaving and they didn't announce that the Cybermen were returning. The idea that there is only a brain in the Cybermen is something that only happens in the Tenth Doctor's era. You are meant to think that the Cybermen in Tenth Planet even have human hands still. These are my favourite Cybermen designs from the whole history of the show, because they make it clear that they aren't robots (the modern designs are too robot-like.) Gold as a weakness is established in an earlier Cyberman story. Adric's badge is established in Adric's first story. We usually didn't have 'season finales' in the Classic show, but yes... this would have worked better if it had been the last story of the season. E-Space stands for Exo-Space - basically another smaller universe outside N-Space (our universe) that why it would be difficult to take Adric back home. The Doctor's morality is - complex? He has killed millions! (especially Daleks!) But he usually tries to give the villains a chance to talk first. Killing them is not his first instinct.

    - sounds like this story, Snakedance, Mawdyn Undead, Enlightenment (maybe), Resurrection of the Daleks, and Caves of Androzani would be stories of Doc 5 you'd really like. I'd love to see what you think of them... but this was the first really good episode of his.
    - I would add that the 4th doctor was talking about genocide in Genesis of the Daleks (interesting parallel that his act of genocide would have been against the Daleks who were modeled after the Nazis🤔), so that's what gave him a moment of pause. Whereas, in this story, he was fighting the Cyber Leader as you said "pumping rounds in him". It's harder to justify genocide as self defense but a one on one fight to the death it's at least easier.

    Can’t wait til u react to The Caves of Androzani. Peter Davison’s last story. It’s one of the best and it’s written by Robert Holmes.

    Nobody else has asked, so I'm just going for it: What's with the 'no' label on the sonic? Actual companion deaths in Who are very rare, so this was hugely impactful at the time (if you'll excuse the pun)

      I was starting to wonder if anyone was going to notice it. I put that as an easter egg because the 5th Doctor doesn't like the Sonic Screwdriver. I wish I was able to put out different stuff for each Doctor but I don't have anything so that's what I came up with.

      @@7thHourFilms Ahhh that makes sense, and I probably should have picked up on it. You could have a recorder for the 2nd Doctor, a bag of Jelly Babies for the 4th, a cat brooch somewhere in the shot for the 6th, and just cover everything in question marks to the point it becomes obnoxious for the 7th! I'm stumped on 1 and 3 though.

      @@7thHourFilms Where did you get the idea that Five doesn't like the sonic? As far as I remember, it gets destroyed at some point and it's a really tragic moment. He says something like "I feel like I've lost an old friend."

    There was a serial after this in Season 19. It's called Time-Flight. For your own health, don't watch it.

    I think because you are watching out of sequence it probably doesn't seem that big a deal. You wouldn't have got the e space and Romana references so it had less meaning and you were less invested in the characters

    This story is my second favourite Cyberman story following Tomb of the Cybermen and also Earthshock been the second colour Cyberstory after Revenge of the Cybermen is definitely better than Revenge with Tom Baker which was a load of tosh and it was fucked up by heavy rewritting by then script editor Bob Holmes and having both read and listened to Gerry Davis original script entitled Return of the Cybermen the original version is billions of times better than the shite televised version andalso Earthshok is much better written better produced and also better directed than Revenge and IMO Earthshock is more like CYberstories of the 1960s and also there is no way the subsequent two Cyberstories of the 80s are particularly great or even excellent
