18-Year-Old Skydiver’s Parachute Didn’t Open on Jump

  • Tyler Turner was excited to go skydiving, and could be seen fighting back nerves in 2016 before heading into the air. The 18-year-old’s mom, Francine, was there to see him off, but tragically, the parachute never opened. Tyler plummeted 13,000 feet to his death, attached to his tandem instructor, who was not certified. Since the 1980s, the skydiving company in Lodi, California, has been linked to 20 other deaths. Now a judge has awarded Tyler’s family $40M in damages. #InsideEdition

      Super rare just apparently not for this company. I did my first tandem august 12th and I've done 18 solo jumps since. Not only do you have the main chute but you've got a reserve and even if your instructor doesn't pull it an Automatic Activation Device does if you're still going a certain speed at a certain altitude. That's why I'm really curious how this happened and I'm surprised they didn't specify that information.

    • @JT_2500

      @@joshhart4931 I did lots of research on this and other fatalities before I went skydiving. Far as I was able to dig up his drogue chute wasn’t cocked before the jump and as a result was uninflated during the jump you can see this in the video. The remedy is to pull your main within 6-8 seconds after you’ve realized your drogue isn’t inflated as it still has enough drag to pull out the main canopy just fine. The Jumpmaster (I use that term loosely he wasn’t correctly certified is my understanding through my research) or the AAD (not sure which or who) fired the reserve into the drogue tangling up the reserve deployment bag with the mains opening system (visible around the 1:56 mark). It was a fixable malfunction. Heartbreaking without a doubt.

    • @v1ttuj33
      @v1ttuj33 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@joshhart4931From what I found out the instructor didn't follow protocol and opened the reserve into the collapsed drogue (drag chute, the small chute in the video) and the reserve became entangled with it and didn't open properly.
      The proper protocol afaik would've been to just deploy the main chute after realizing the drogue chute was deflated.

I don't know exactly what happened here, but I will say to anyone else who cares, looking to go skydiving is not the time to bargain hunt. Don't pick the little set up with the modest prices. @@MrSkunk138 90% chance? Dude, from trained people with a license, there's a 0.006% chance of dying, per 1,000 jumps. 21 fatalities were reported from 2010, to 2019. There is no 90% chance. These people died due to pure incompetence, and thinking it's okay to trick people into entrusting their LIVES to them. Comments like yours make it seem justified, like they knew the risk. Yes, there's always a risk, but this had nothing to due with risk, it was 100% the people in charge. Unfortunately, people had to die for others to notice that.

    • @flybeep1661
      @flybeep1661 3 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      The reason why it didn't open is seen in the vid. The flapping fabric above the rig is the drogue chute, it's a tiny parachute meant to stabilize and slow down the freefall. It's also the anchor that pulls out the main chute. But there's no active anchor to pull anything out, it's just flapping in the air. You can have your chute packed perfectly but if can't come out then it's no use. Also, as a skydiver myself, I know you can pack a chute horribly and still have a perfectly functioning parachute above your head as long as you do a few basic principles packing principles right. Packing a chute isn't exact science. Btw, did you notice how the vid never talks about a failed reserve?

    I have yet to make my first jump, but the mere fact the drouge chute didn't deploy correctly should have been an early dead giveaway that something was amiss. From what I understand, the drouge puts tenson on a line running from it to the main canopy's deployment bag. When the ripcord is pulled, it pulls a pin that holds a flap on the container (backpack) shut. Once removed, the tension from the drouge chute line pulls the deployment bag out of the container, causing it to pay out its lines. When those lines become taught, the canopy itself is pulled out of the deployment bag. From there, air flows into the individual cells, inflating them. Once inflated, they form an airfoil, producing aerodynamic lift the oppose the force of gravity.
    Neither of them once looked up to see that the drouge had not inflated. If they had noticed the emergency then and there, the instructor could have manually pulled on the drouge line and manually thrown out the deployment bag, deploying the main canopy then and there. In skydiving (and aviation,) altitude is life insurance- you have more time to correct/address an emergency.
    This is tragic, but its ultimately a freak accident. It does not excuse the gross negligence of the owner (who employed unlicensed instructors,) but, from what I've been told, most skydivers die with a perfectly functional parachute- poor ADM as us pilots would say.

      @WHO WHO WALKWA Always do background checks on these types of businesses. Big mistake here was that the other guy wasn't even fully certified.
      20 deaths under one company is outrageous.

    Making them pay money is holding them accountable, but how is that "justice"? Somebody needs to be locked up, and that business should have been shut down!

      Sydney they're probably gonna take all the money they make until they make enough money for 40m but it's highly unlikely they're gonna pay for it so the company will probably go bankrupt

      It’s not justice if you think about it. Just a spur of the moment decision by stupid judges or ‘system’ who already should have shut that place down. 20 people died did the other 19 people also get millions? No they most likely got nothjng but this sweet kid made the judges finally wanna act and give ‘justice’. If it was some random 40 year old black man im sure he would have got nothing or much less.
