  • In this video I'm doing something different - I am drinking your wines! These bottles were kindly delivered to me by Mick S (one of you!) with the request that I do a video on them. How could I resist an offer like that. So, today I am looking at the great wines of Sami-Odi in the Barossa Valley. In particular, I am delving into the Hoffmann Dallwitz vineyard Syrah with a little vertical: 2021, 2019, 2018 and 2017.

Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin...) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

Thanks Mick and Erin. Absolutely wonderful wines by Fraser. Always a challenge when the offer comes out just after Xmas and New Year and you have to cough up the hard earned to grab a few bottles, but always worth it when it comes time to drink them. 😁

Fantastic vertical Erin really like the multi year appraisals and I recall you enjoy drinking alot of Australian wine with some primary fruit left in the drinking window much like myself so it's good to know your views on the transition in to secondary and tertiary . I have one bottle of the 2018 took an absolute punt on it a few years back . Thanks Erin and Mick !

Thanks for the vintage commentary, think there should be more vintage characteristic discussions region by region in Australia. I personally like hearing about the vintage weather etc and then seeing how it translates in the glass and between producers

As always a great and informative video Erin! Aussie Shiraz is my favourite wine and being Irish I’m jealous of the variety you have available there. Interesting comments on the 2017 vintage. I have Lily’s Garden and Dead Arm from that vintage and have been saving them but maybe I need to open them up!

Well it’s all preferential - you may love them so don’t throw them under the bus prematurely. If you have multiple bottles definitely open one and see what you think! Thanks for watching! 🙏

I'd love to see a Utopos (and Eutopos) vertical review. Kym Teusner's project has been very popular here in the UK, and I'm sure I spotted at least one bottle on your shelf the other day.

Yes, Kym sends me these wines and I agree - they are very good!

Great video again. I’ve seen the Sami-Odi wines and wondered if they’re worth the price tag, but never tried yet. Keen to give it a go now and thanks for highlighting the pros/cons of these later vintages. Disappointing though that they’ve elected to use cork - this seems a travesty for a quality Australian producer.

Plenty of great Australian producers use cork, and this producer adheres to very high quality corks. The wines are definitely worth the hunt and the money. I’ve opened plenty of Sami odi bottles and this was my first corked bottle fwiw. Go well!

I managed to get 6 Sami-Odi little wine #10 and opened one a month or so back and was not impressed...it was very soapy? No idea what that means...? However, have a 2015 and 2018 and am looking forward to them. Will give the #10 one more go and if soapy, off to Langtons it'll go. Love their labels and corks :)

Interesting. The Little Wines are multi vintage so they can really challenge our notion of red table wine - perhaps some of the older vintages were not sitting well with you? I like to check which vintages are in the wine so I have a feel for the characters they might impart overall. If you didn’t do that already, maybe give that a go next time you open a bottle.

Great video! i have a couple of bottles of the 2021 in my cellar, would you suggest drinking this one earlier or sitting on it for a few years?

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well… I absolutely loved the bottle I opened, but it will live for a very long time in the cellar, so it’s your call. I generally drink them younger because I love the vitality of the fruit. Your call though!

Do you think theres any advantage to fraser bottling under cork? Seems the stelvin options nowdays allow for variation in oxygenation, that coupled with not sparging - seems stylistically wouldnt have a huge impact but would save a few bottles. That said i know theres an emotional aspect to cork!

    • @erinlarkin

Cork and screwcap look very different, and so even though I personally like the reliability of screwcap, I think that in the context of this producer, the instances of cork tainted wines are so low. The cork closure allows the wines to age in a soft, relaxed environment, which helps to shape the tannins over time. I was surprised to find the 2019 like this, but since it almost never happens I decided to roll with it and discuss it.
The anaerobic environment provided by a screwcap can make the fruit seem fresher, but also cramped upon opening, so I’d advise decanting as a necessity for wines sealed under that closure.
