An underrated pianist's concerto work. Finally, a live performance of Medtner's first piano concerto.
Never heard this orchestra or pianist before. Fantastic performance of an incredibly complex and difficult piece!
what an incredible pianist WOW!
Lofty and imperial one minute then intimately tender then passionate another, it has everything it is a masterpiece that deserves more frequent airing despite its difficulties.
This concerto has everything except kitchen sink! Any weaknesses in your technic will be quite obvious
00:00 - 1 - Allegro
11:31 - 2 - Theme & Variations
24:51 - 3 - Recpitulation
27:04 - 4 - Coda, Allegro molto
32:45 This comment is just for me so I can click and listen to the end a hundred times in a row. Has to be in my top 10 piano concerto endings.
This has to be the most complex and (in every sense) difficult of his 3 concertos. I also finds its poignant end uniquely moving and arresting.
Exactly, but the ending of his 3rd piano concerto is my most favourite of all!!!
I love all three of the concertos. In terms of structure, this one is the most impressive. The textures in Medtner's music are amazing too. Watching someone play it on video shows how well it fits under the hands too.
Medtner truly understood the pianistic mechanism
Wow! what a recording! first of all, the video & audio quality are GREAT! second, the playing is full of fire and yet very delicate as well. orchestra is top notch! thank you so much!
woow wonderfull performance from the whole orchestra and espeacially from the Pianist 🙌🏻
This is my dream concerto, I love it so so much.
An underrated masterpiece that needs to be heard more often. Superb performance too.
thanks so much for the great recording! i actually got the opportunity to listen to Volodin live earlier this year, playing the same concerto
Lucky you 👍👍👍!
Such a rare thing to hear a Medtner concerto! - In the UK, I don't think anyone plays them! His solo piano works are, I think, gradually being performed and recorded more often. Pianophiles will know how even Horowitz struggled to get Medtner performed in the west.
But Medtner died in Britain and had there several excellent pupils - e.g. , Edna Iles.

Oh my parts:
07:00
21:34
25:18
I love Medtner so much!
At 21:39 - Where one of the most beautiful parts is played by the orchestra, the pianist gives such a smile of excitement and the conductor smiles back at him :)
Also 23:09. And 31:02
WHY don’t other pianists program the Medtner Concertos in their performances? Lovely piece and performance.
because beethoven mozart beethoven mozart beethoven mozart. people never get sick of this shit.
@@Mr704010400mind you this is pretty Mish mash rubbish. None of it goes together. A few nice moments. Starts out promising but overall disjointed
its HARD hard. This is like 10 times more complicated than Rach 1
Outstanding performance!!!
Really good performance. Thanks for sharing.
On a Bösendorfer Imperial?!? YES PLEASE
What a wonderful performance!
I played it with my school orchestra. It has some nice parts to it but far too disjointed and virtuosity for virtuositys sake.
Great performance
BEAUTIFUL , Thank you
This is one that deserves to be in the repertoire. What's not to like?
Shaping more and more to be one of my TOP 5 favorite pieces ever.
One of the best pieno concertos ever! It has so many astonishing moment full of emotions and stellar climaxes!
Diese Aufführung war der Himmel auf Erden.
30:58 that climax is devastating. Right now it's my favourite to listen =)))
that concertmaster is the most passionate player ive ever seen in an orchestra lmao
Yes he is truly an excellent musician.
What a muted response to this exciting performance - perhaps it's a Russian thing?
why muted? People clapping and screaming bravo!
Congratulations,Thank you
Such an incredible ending...
30:25
Second movement is completely ruined by constant coughing
try considering the coughs flecks on the yellowed pages of a great book
There is no point in blaming the war in Ukraine for a shortage of Russian cough sweets, because this was recorded before the invasion..
33:10 stolen motive for the ending (Chopin Prelude, finale - the 3 'cannon shots'). No cadenzas in this concerto? Pianist and Orchestra, finest performers.
the 3 main motives from Rachmaninoff piano concerto #2 and 2 motives from C# prelude were stolen from A. Von Henselt. Everyone steals everything from everyone.
The last 3 notes with dotted rythm? It sounds way too short and simple to be "stolen" from anyone... What Chopin prelude do you refer to?
You think a dotted C tonic note at the end of a piece is stolen? How could that POSSIBLY be plagiarism?
@@sbareg he is talking about the last measures of prelude no 24
Stupid or something?)
