Back when I started following the Sir, he had done Pentatonix and Home free. Maybe VoicePlay. too I was stunned by his analytical prowess. I asked him several times to do Voctave. I was SO glad when a Patreon request came in 6 months ago, and he finally did for Disney Love Medley with Kirstie from PTX. I'm glad you and others appreciate Voctave! I think they sound better than any other a cappella group I have ever heard. Whether 4 members or 40. Voctave sounds the best. Jamey is absolutely a musical genius! Anyway, Merry Christmas, or whatever you might celebrate!
Jamey Ray truly is a gifted arranger. When you have these voices to arrange for, it creates magic. Hoping you continue down the Voctave rabbit hole after Christmas as well. It's always awesome to see analysis of their work by people who understand music and music theory. So close to 50K subs and on your way to the silver play button. Love it!
@dorkyvonmunchmunch9912, I commented a couple of months ago about when his reaction to Hallelujah might pop up. @SirHairless replied that he was saving it for a special occasion. I have a feeling that as soon as 50K shows up on his subscriber count, Hallelujah will drop very soon after
In simpler terms, the performance of this song by Voctave is a perfect example of extreme pitch control, breathing, execution as a group, and dynamics. Not to mention the outstanding arraignments by Jamey Ray.
As an alto myself, it's always great to hear altos getting some interesting notes. Beautiful remdition. That final note ... apparently he can breathe through his ears!🥰
You have such a refined ear. You can hear and recreate details that many of us simply enjoy without being able to articulate. It reminds me of when I was discussing an Indian restaurant I enjoyed with a friend who had grown up in India. He described how this spice had been roasted, but this other spice had not. I said, "All I can describe is where on the scale it goes from yummy to yucky." Listening to your skilled, refined descriptions of music compared to mine is similar to that. Happily, we both enjoy great music. Thank you.
@@martiwalsh2069sir hairless has a leg up on many great musicians because he has flawless perfect pitch. That’s why he can hear so many parts in a big wall of sound. And knowing so much music theory can then break it down for those of us who aren’t as fortunate as he. My daughter has perfect pitch. I found out when she was 18 months old. I used to play the ABC song for her in different Keys on the piano and instead of saying this is the key of C or this is the key of E flat she was so little I called the key of C the “white key” and the key of e flat the “Black key”. Every key had their own funny name like “the bear key” and many others. I would ask her everyday what key she wanted me to play it in to sing. She would pick and I would play. One night we were watching a concert on TV and she said oh “the bear key” she couldn’t form full sentences yet so she was just pointing at the tv saying “ bear key”!!! I have good relative pitch but not perfect pitch. So I went to the piano and d*mn the 18 month old baby was right. So then I tested her. She would say what key she wanted a song played in and I would purposefully play it in the wrong key and she would start crying and say “no Mommy no!” So then I started telling her the real names for the keys and starting her early musical theory education even at that tender young age. She plays multiple instruments and sings like an angel. She is very very talented.
MAN, I love Voctave! Listen to how precise their onsets, phrasing, articulation, and releases are! Every consonant the end of a phrase sounds perfect. And every time I listen to this, I get out of breath just listening to EJ hold that note forever, then go UP!!! That's in-freaking-sane and takes SO much breath control! But dang, does he have a VOICE! This song is just pure joy in sound form. Wonderful R&A as always.
I've always loved this version. E. J. just shined in this and, as usual, the other members were sublime. The arrangement makes the listener truly listen to the words and their meaning.
I have been waiting all December for this very reaction. Thank you for doing it. I am blown away how you can hear such subtle changes in harmony. You are fascinating to watch and to listen too. I like pentatonix, but I love Voctave. I check every day to see if you have done another Voctave video. Keep up the good work. Hope you have a great holiday.
I love the way you break everything down - I hear everything on a whole new level and this is sooo ethereal. Beautiful song, and a very respectable performance, especially EJ! I wasn't sure what to expect, he absolutely killed it! Merry Merry, yall ☺️
Thanks for another great analysis. I would never have paid attention to the important alto lines if you wouldn't have pointed them out. Thanks for continuing to teach more about music with every analysis.
Spectacular! Voctave is still quite new to me, so I hadn't seen this performance. Wow. I completely agree with you about the first and second halves of the hymn (although it was a treat to hear EJ's solo at the beginning), and I loved how they flirted with the descant I have sung so many times, but then they never completed it! Your analysis, as always was superb -- and helped me hear new things. I am always amazed by what you hear in a first hearing! Thank you, Sir Hairless! Can't wait for tomorrow!
Thanks for this reaction. I am so appreciative of Jamey's arrangements and the attention to detail in their performances. As always, great analysis. You always give me something else to listen for. Have a very wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year!!
I really love watching you slowly discover why I love Voctave and Jamey’s arrangements so much. EJ just killed this and I love how the arrangement starts off calm because I think that’s part of what makes the latter half really blow your Santa hat off.
I'm a huge fan of Voiceplay, so I've heard EJ before. I've watched this performance.before because I knew he had the solo. It is a beautiful performance from him and Voctave.
I was really hoping that you would react to this song, and to do it this close to Christmas was perfect. Amazing that a song from the mid 1700s can still make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, bring tears to your eyes and remind you why we celebrate this holiday. I would love to see you react to Voctave's "this is my wish/let there be peace on earth". It is an older song of theirs but a perfect reminder for all of us as we head into a new year. I wish you a very Merry Christmas, and I look forward to all of your reactions in the coming months. You are truly the best at what you do.
I am secretly partial to EJ. Don't tell the others! This is one of my favorite Voctave performances. I've heard it SO many times... and it still sometimes makes me tear up. Your outstanding commentary made me enjoy this even MORE than usual! You just "get" music through and through. You hear more in one take than most of us notice after 5 or more. It's uncanny. Anyway, this was a really great episode. I gave it the 240th like (I've been subscribed for a LONG time now). Oh... in case you haven't heard... there is a rumor out there that EJ is really an alien for whom breathing is optional. Happy holidays!!
🥲Voctave always gives us watery eyes. EJ brings so much warm and heart. Thanks for pointing out the bass movements, so I could hear them better. Wishing you a very merry holiday season, Sir Hairless!
The last note he held was crazy long but what made it particularly hard was that he jumped the octave and held it for the final 8 seconds. Very impressive breath control. Staying straight tone thru that whole part made it possible. Takes more energy with vibrato which they all only used on the last 1-2 seconds.
Definitely wasn't expecting that jump of a 5th up at the end by EJ, very cool I'd actually say that straight tone singing - especially at volume - requires more energy
I was waiting for this one! I just love it so much! A couple more suggestions for Christmas, from Voctave the Carol of the bells of Notre Dame, the First Noel from Pentatonix, and I would also suggest Eileen's version of Shchedryk. Have a Merry Christmas!!
The dissonance makes it pop at the near end to push the emotional buttons - that change was superb. I loved it!❤ Did I hear you go down into a low range - only have heard you up high. Wow - how many octaves do you have?
Haha indeed! I've been singing a bit more of the bass parts in recent vids - I think my voice is generally a bit lower in the cold of the winter 😂 Around 3.5 usually quite comfortably (and then around 4 on a very good day 🎹)
Excellent as always! If you're looking for more Voctave suggestions for Christmas, here are a few that are excellent: - Carol of the Bells of Notre Dame - Joy to the World (with For Unto Us a Child is Born) - Jingle Bells (taking parts of Barbara Steisand's version and dipping into other versions)
"…they're standing completely still so something as simple as turning your head can really have much more of an impact." MJ's 92 Dangerous tour intro before he sings Jam is another great exemple of such a "much more of an impact" 😅

Today, though--3:17 am on the 23rd of December, 2024--EJ Cardona may have achieved an upset. This is stunning.
I told you about this one in the comments of "Mary..." Knew you'd like it. I am convinced EJ has a third lung. He holds that note at the end over 25 seconds, AND goes up a 5th at the very end - all in "Belt Mode". 😲Seriously, the man has breath control like I've never seen.

Voctave produces a glorious choral sound (in my opinion), and their arrangements often introduce unexpected chords that can be delightful, often because of the dissonance in them. I typically find their music pleasing and even emotionally moving. Occasionally (such as from 16:00 to 16:23), it's not the dissonant chords per se that jar me so much as the choice in chord progression through the dissonance that leaves me cringing. Perhaps I'm too entrenched in a Western music tradition to be able to completely enjoy the creativity this arrangement displayed; or perhaps it's the duration of compounding dissonance before resolution that tests my tolerance. My loss, I fear, but I'm so glad Sir Hairless analyzed, enjoyed and appreciated the rendition, including the small section that for me was a blemish.
I see where you're coming from! The best I could come up with was that it wasn't the actual chords themselves, but the progression (though I didn't analyzed the chord progression to see what's actually there), and maybe the fact that it was a run of 4 measures rather than a fleeting few chords before a solid resolution was reached that brought on my reaction. By the way, I'm glad you pointed out the jazz connection as I think I would have missed it in my discomfort, as I wasn't hearing standard jazz harmonies.
