Thanks, again, to Brod & Taylor for sponsoring this post - you can find out more about the Sahara Folding Dehydrator here: brodandtaylor.com/darcy-baldwin How do you use your mushroom powder?!
First thing I will try with the mushroom powder is make a sort of pate mixing it with cream cheese and some herbs and served with garlic toasted baguette slices or crackers.
Although I've never made dehydrated mushrooms before, I have years of experience in making all kinds of different powders - paprika, onion, garlic and tomato. Here's some additional tips that you or your viewers might appreciate: - only grind as much powder as you think you'll use in about 6 months. Reserve your the rest f your dehydrated product and save it in an air tight container (preferably vacuum sealed) and then grind it to a powder when you run out. - no matter what kind of grinder you use, you will get a much finer grind if you put it through a fine meshed sieve. - to avoid clumping (and if you're obsessive like me) you can re-dehydrate your powder - that is, if your dehydrator can accommodate drying powdered product. Caution: if you dehydrate powdered material, make sure that you turn off your fan before you open the door to your deydrator. - I clean and deodorize my grinder by grinding up a handful of uncooked rice. Enjoyed your video. Lots of useful advice there. Thanks for posting. Cheers.
That's a very nice looking dehydrator, unfortunately it's almost twice the price here in the UK so I'll be sticking with my 2nd hand Excalibur. I love dehydrating mushrooms. Every time they are on sale or I have some that have passed their best they get dehydrated. I usually put the powder in soups or bolognese sauce. My granddaughters are both adamant that they "hate" mushrooms but they've both been eating them for years 😄
I absolutely love that you show your mistakes and then how you still make it work and not just cut it out. Your videos have given me the confidence to dehydrate and make so many wonderful things.
When I put the powder in my jars I use my canning funnel in the jars so you can turn the grinder cup upside down and let the dust settles in the jars , hope this makes sense lol
This looks delicious! I think I'll use it to make a flavored butter. We like to use flavored butters on meat, biscuits, veggies. Okay I admit it, we are addicted to butter.
We love that heavy metal mushroom slicer We go through about 3 to 6 lbs of mushrooms a week. Well worth the money, not that it was expensive. I highly recommend it.
I started dehydrating mushrooms I find in the grocery store in the 'discount' cooler; what I have found is that the dehydrating mushrooms actually increase in flavor 100% after the dehydration and then reconstituting. We add them to the green bean casserole (with the fried onion rings) during holiday dinners and there isn't a drop of food left in the casserole dish by the end of the meal. They are amazing after dehydration!
You are the dehydrating Queen! When I got my first dehydrator I found you on TH-cam and I always go to you when I need to learn something new. The first thing I ever tried was mangoes and they were so delicious. I now save my tomato skins and powder them.
That machine is awesome! When you popped it on the counter I was in love. My current dehydrator doesn't fit in the kitchen. It sits in the small bedroom in the shipping box, taking up room there. Almost the size of a night stand. Now to watch the rest of the video.
I am just becoming used to the idea of pressure canning food. Now my eyes have veered off to maybe getting into dehydrating...auuggh!! LOL...This is all so fascinating and I feel you are way up there in knowledge and experience. Thanks for helping all of us. Jesus bless.
I love Brod and Taylor. I have had their folding proofer & Slow Cooker for 4 years. They are an excellent company. I use the proofer to ferment my sourdough bread, fruit yeast water, and make yogurt. I can use any of my own pots and pans in the slow cooker mode including my 8 quart Dutch oven. The proofer folds out like the Dehydrator does.
I thank you so much for the effort you put into your Utube videos. They are all absolutely fantastic. I am new at the powdered fruits Vegetable and dehydrating craze and know nothing about what to do and where to start. After watching many of your videos and reading your body of work on powdered foods I am astounded at your effort. Thanks again.
I just ordered this dehydrator and look forward to using it. I love that it is so compact-I live in a 120yr old house with no storage! I have a smaller dehydrator that will work fine for smaller projects- orange and lemon rind, herbs, flowers for potpourri, etc. But we’re going into lessor times and I want to start stocking up and storing. Love your videos!
The word you were looking for is substrate. Common substrates used are vermiculite and brown rice flour. Thanks for the great content! New subscriber❤️😊
I’m vegan, and I just made my first batch of dehydrated baby Bella mushroom powder! I mostly use it for my homemade ramen broth, but it’s been great in so many dishes.
I've been able to get mushrooms on discount and I prefer too lightly wash and brush. They look awesome when dried, I condition then finish with a oxy absorber and a seal from my machine. They are my favorite dehydrated food as they add such a full flavored mushroom taste I'd rather use dehydrated in all my cooked dishes! To keep a decent supply I need to dry about every other month, I've got my bf hooked also...of course I'm the one with the dehydrator. 😁
I been drying morels for years now and they are amazing ground into a powder and used as a seasoning on sauteed button mushrooms when you first start to cook them.
I love my Sahara Dehydrator! I researched and saved for this dehydrator for a long time. I received it two weeks ago and it felt like Christmas. The Brod and Taylor staff are wonderful. I absolutely love it! I’ve dehydrated so many things already. I’ve made granola and yogurt too! I needed something that I could easily store away. It’s one of the best made pieces of kitchen equipment that I’ve purchased. You won’t regret getting one. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do! 😁
I just came across your page. I was looking for how to dehydrate mushrooms and you popped up and I'm so glad it did. I am going to try to make the mushroom powder. Now I'm off to watch some more of your amazing videos :)
Last Christmas I ran across the idea of "finishing salts" and decided to make some. My favourite? Mushroom, rosemary and pink hymalayan ground to a find powder and sprinkled over anything.
I forage mushrooms and dry them, and powder them. I make mushroom sauce. I always cook mushrooms, even if dried, unless I cook then dry them. Boiled mushroom powder makes mushroom stock, then strain and re dry, re powder as it swells, and use that powder too. It adds umami to dishes, and mushrooms sauce with tomato paste and anchovy and vinegar and spice is traditional catsup, it's great.
That folding dehydrator looks amazing!!!! My husband would be so happy to not have dehydrators sitting out. 🤣 I have a ton of mushrooms I just bought to dehydrate this weekend so I'm glad you put out a video.
I don't care what any one else says, I wash them under hot running water then turn them right side up to drain while I wash the other ones. I have no problem sauteing them even getting them a beautiful browned look.
I bought 8 lbs of mushrooms that were on sale at Aldi’s. Thank you for that tip which I got from watching you and Leisa about 2 days ago. I have 2 Cosori dehydrators going which took all 8 pounds. So excited to try the powder.
just last night I had pork roast with onion gravy which I made 'heavy' with dried morels and let it simmer till the morels rehydrated, fall apart tender...
Oh Darcy I was yelling at you not to do that wish you could hear. Thank you very much for the demonstration and the recipe I'm saving this video because I'm going to need to go back to it no mushrooms right now. No printer right now either and you made it easy for everybody. Bless you Darcy and have a good day
We had a huge laugh about it :) You can always do a screen shot of the recipe, or just save it to your computer at any point - you don't have to print it out.
Thank you I'm interested in dehydrating as a way to take advantage of bulk pricing for my household of 2. Your mushroom powder seasoning may be just the thing to stimulate my husband's appetite as he complains of losing his sense of taste ( It's age related; not covid-19)
Wow, that dehydrator is awesome, I hate that the trays from my Excalibur does NOT fit in my deep double bowl sink, it is the most inconvenient thing about it. Thanks for sharing it with us!
TY Darcy for the excellent teachings on mushrooms and the different ways to process them and their many uses. I want to do mushrooms soon. Yesterday I did apples for the first time and they turned out awesome. I’m conditioning them now. TY for all your help over the last couple of month or so. It’s people like you who make new adventures fun and exciting!!! 💕🌸💕
I'm a big fan, watched so much of your videos and let me tell you, asid the awesome content and the very good tips and tricks.. it is an absolute pleasure to watch you explain things. Thank you so much!
I once did a project with Monterey Mushrooms in California. The medium that they grow the mushrooms in is sterilized with high pressure steam to kill anything that might want to live among the mushrooms. With that said, they suggested that I simply brush the soil off of the mushrooms with a dry paper towel that was wadded up. It works great
My son brought home a paper grocery bag w1/2 full of mushrooms that were given to him at a food show. So I really appreciate your video! I'm new at this so with my Presto Dehydrator I'm eager to apply your knowledge. Lol, I love the blunder with the salt and onion powder.
Going on a trip and staying a place with electric, camping, or hotelier or my car has an ac/DC outlet. Looks like you can dehydrate on the road using care. ❤❤
This is great info. I just got my dehydrator and doing tomatoes in it today. I am making tomato powder when dry. May be save some for using another way. I did do skins by just air drying them before. So easy! Yesterday I did celery and I have done a few mushrooms. I will do more mushrooms tomorrow, as I have some in the frig to use up. Like the idea of rubs and on pop corn.
Thank you for explaining the difference between cleaning mushrooms, wet or dry methods. I was always confused about that. I have dehydrated sliced mushrooms in my convection oven and they came out well. But I have never powdered them. Will try that next time. I also wondered if it's worth growing your own mushrooms. I see the kits on Amazon.
Phoenix AZ. Had a newscast about a grower of unique Mushrooms. And they were crazy looking. But. The fella grows them inside and sells them to restaurants. Best of luck. I say go for it if you can $ it.🤗
I just dehydrated for the first time. In the oven. 🤷♀️ I don’t have a dehydrator. I want one so much…. But I couldn’t wait, I made 15 pints of spaghetti meat sauce (30 lbs of tomatoes) and I didn’t want to waste the skins, so I thought 🤔 hmmm I’ll give it a go. Probably 1/4 of it was wasted. But that’s ok, learning experience. I did collect a pint of … flakes? Which I can use as is or powder. I’m so totally hooked. Now I to obtain a dehydrator. I want the cosorio but may have to settle for a different one. I can’t wait though. I am so excited!
Hi. I use alot of your videos. Thanks. I dehydrated some mushrooms 2 years ago and opened a jar today and they are spongy however it was still tightly vaccum sealed. Are they still good ?
That means your jar wasn't airtight or they weren't fully dry when you put them up. For some things, I err on the side of getting rid of them, and mushrooms is one of them. But if you want to keep them, put them back in the dehydrator and dry out again.
I'm prepping button mushrooms to dehydrate tomorrow morning! We picked up a round presto Dehydrator so I can prove to my hubby that it will be a good investment to order a larger box type one later! Thank you so much for all this great info!
Good afternoon. Love the fact that I can purchase mushrooms at bulk stores, then dehydrate. Thank you. Much easier sometimes than having to use immediately. Also quick question. We were gifted organic coconut flakes. Should I dehydrate or can I store with O2 absorobor silica gel packet. We use frequently, but got about 5 lbs. If stored should last a couple of years. Suggestions?
You need to decide which you want - oxygen removal or moisture removal - you can't have both effectively. I would break it up into segments, store and use whichever control you want.
@@ThePurposefulPantry thank you. Wasn't sure if the oil (I think) content would make a difference. So the one I get into regularly, the moisture absorber...others, Oxygen. Very helpful. Thank you. Exactly what I wanted to understand.
Interesting video, thanks. Couple questions: how can you tell which to add in - oxygen or moisture absorbers? Do any or all of your powders need to be out of sunlight?
I can top the cleaning mushrooms saga. Upteen years ago I went with a friend from work to a gathering of English cricket players (?!) touring Canada, and after the match they were preparing a curry dish (most of the English players were from India) and they actually peeled the mushrooms. I mean, PEELED them.
I have a mushroom brush and it is very interesting because the bristles are extremely soft probably about 3/4 of an inch long but they just knocked the dirt off wonderfully and I feel good not having to wash my washrooms just clean them up and cut off the stem end that’s dry.
My favorite video so far. I have lots of dehydrated mushrooms already that I use in my favorite soup but I’m going to powder some of my dehydrated mushrooms and experiment with using it. I’m going to put the Sahara on my wishlist. I love my Excalibur but I live in a small condo and storage is an issue. I have broken so many egg slicers over the years. I’m going to add that mushroom slicer to my Amazon order. I may add it to my Christmas gift baskets this year.
I bought a Brod & Taylor in 2020 and it did not work as good as another one I have. It did not live up to my expectations and I only used it five times. I tried it again last week and low and behold I started smelling something like wires burning. Cant return it either. It is going to dehydrator heaven on bulk day. Yes I have tried many many dehydrators and for speed and accuracy and just a better drying experience II am sticking with my excalibur and will get the 5 tray one because I like to do zuchmore at a time. No joke I just left an updated review on Amazon saying what my issue is with them. P.S. They did not, I don't know if they do now, make mesh trays to fit their machine and I had to purchase some mesh liners and cut them to fit. Still not long enough so had to cut more to fit entire tray. They are rectangular so no other machine trays fit it. Not deep enough. The non stick liners I bought that they do sell have stained first time use. Thats my experience and of course many other people have no issues. But being that I dehydrate quite a lot I have no use for it. I will say that the fact that it folds down was why purchased it and it is really quiet. I have kept my excalibur when trying out other dehydrators and so far I can live with the noise since I am upstairs at night and put everything in it the night before.
Sorry you didn't like it. I'm loving it - it is drying as fast as my Excalibur - it is different to get used to the longer trays, but it's working fine for me as much as I've used it since I got it. But thanks for sharing your opinion.
I got a chain mail glove and the mushroom egg slice you got .... two weeks ago... its like I was meant to watch your channel! LOLOLOL enjoying this very much. Love mushrooms too. Thank you so much for your help, must have been an example to me about working smarter and not harder.. so happy to get the recipe! LOVE YOUR sense of humor, even Dad humor! Did go to Facebook a day or so and requested to join your group...still waiting on approval.
The correct recipe was in the description box like I mentioned - and you can just print it off here. When I'm trying to film and do things, sometimes I mispeak, so I provided that info for you. www.thepurposefulpantry.com/mushroom-powder-seasoning-blend/
hi just started canning earlier this year and I absolutely love it and for Christmas I got a Cosori dehydrator. I’ve been watching your dehydrating videos and I want to first do teriyaki jerky and then I want to do the greens powder and then I want to dehydrate mushrooms and make mushroom powder. I eventually want to do a lot of the powders that you do but I am so enjoying watching your videos thank you so much. Hopefully I will take it out of the box soon and start dehydrating.
Wow! What a great video! I have been a subscriber since last august, I learnt so so many things. I was about to buy a slicer, your video answered all my questions… maybe I don’t need one, but I like your chopper, which one do you recommend? Great way to prepare mushrooms for powder. So thank you and thank you again! This is so interesting… I have been reading publications on your FB page since I woke up… still in my pyjamas! 😅 My husband is getting used to it… but at least he understands because he loves what I dehydrate, thanks to you. I have been meaning to do your recipe of mushroom seasoning for sone times now… today for sure! ❤️
Wonderful! Going to make mushrooms one of my first dehydrating experiments. Thank you! Also, appreciate the shopping links - convenient, fast, easy. Thanks
@@ThePurposefulPantry Going to get the Sahara for my DD who is a full time RVer. RV space is limited. It’ll be perfect! So happy you reviewed it. Thanks
The only time I don't think you can wash mushrooms is if you're making mushroom catsup. You're pulling the water out with salt. Added water could make it less concentrated. If you're cooking it you're going to evaporate the extra water. Maybe it made a difference when you had to cut the firewood by hand. Saved time. But nowadays with modern stoves and dehydrator? The difference of a few minutes.

Question? Is it true that you don’t get much benefit from this particular mushroom if it isn’t cooked?

Same thing here in Canada. It's way too costly for a dehydrator. I could stock my pantry with 3 months of foir for the price of the machine.

ANY machine - as long as it has temp controls because I find them to be very important - will work. Get what you can get - and get busy preserving!
@@ThePurposefulPantry I will. I love it! And thank you very much!
Hahah you crack me up :) love how ‘real’ you are
I'm only halfway through your video and already you've sold me the Sahara dehydrator. I'm so impressed. x
Just a follow up. .. I loved your video, just subscribed. I'm looking forward to watching all your past and present videos. Love from UK. x
It is available in Germany, so they may ship to the UK if you ever decide to go for it.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thankyou. x
This is great. Thanks. Mushrooms are the best!
Yes they are!
Good luck!!
I've dehydrated Turkey tail mushrooms this year they are a immune booster.
Onion salt is a favorable result
As far as "mistakes" go. 😋😍
I have just made your mushroom powder recipe and eaten it on rice tonight…delicious, thank you.
Wonderful! Glad you liked it!
20:22 in this mix you say mushroom powder twice can you clarify that’s what you mean? Thanks can’t wait to try it
The recipe is in the description box: www.thepurposefulpantry.com/dehydrate-mushrooms/
Thank you for your help.
Do any or all of your powders need to be out of sunlight?
th-cam.com/video/3OBU1udS2Wo/w-d-xo.html
And all dehydrated products should be stored in a dark, cool place for best results.
I watched about 2 years late, but when I saw you putting the salt in the onion powder, I was going, "Ddtdtdtdtdtdt!!!!"
Mushroom gravy would be good to.
Great tip using the egg cutter! Cant believe I have not snapped to that before!!!
Glad it was helpful!
As you were adding the salt, I was mentally screaming, "NOOOOooooo!"
I've thought about making my own Herbes de Provence, and I'll write down your recipe. (With your permission, of course!) Lol.
I've heard of folks doing that - especially on stems.
I was shown this trick! I only use it at camp with no running water
Thank you
I bought a Brod & Taylor in 2020 and it did not work as good as another one I have.
@@ThePurposefulPantry I am glad you like it. That was just my experience and I am probably one in a million. Enjoy and keep up the videos.
Thank you Marci, that was awesome!!
Glad you liked it!
I love your videos you have taught me a lot thank you I'm hoping I could pass this on.
Best video on the subject that I’ve found. Saved & Sub’d. THANK YOU!!
Awesome, thank you!
@@ThePurposefulPantry That happens to me too, TOTALLY understandable!!
That was a great joke, especially because it was so unexpected! Will remember that one.
Wow that is such a cool dehydrator
I love my nine tray Sahara, have had it for years!
hi just started canning earlier this year and I absolutely love it and for Christmas I got a Cosori dehydrator.
Yes! Get that puppy out and take it for a spin! Do some frozen veg first - they are almost foolproof and will give you confidence!
@@ThePurposefulPantry you dont put your puppy in the microwave for a spin. 🐶🐕🐈 silly 🐒
Love this dehydrator!
Wonderful! Going to make mushrooms one of my first dehydrating experiments. Thank you! Also, appreciate the shopping links - convenient, fast, easy. Thanks
This is a great first time project.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Going to get the Sahara for my DD who is a full time RVer. RV space is limited. It’ll be perfect! So happy you reviewed it. Thanks
This mushroom powder looks amazing!!
It's so good!
Will be doing tjis
Thank you for such an informative video and will be making this. Great channel!
I so need to do this, thank you for your video.
Thank you Darcy. Great video! 😄
Glad you enjoyed it!
Now it's onion salt! :-)
The difference of a few minutes.
excellent, thanks
