We did find a solution to the waste. It isn't as much as you are thinking. A 1000mw nuclear power plant (supporting 1,000,000,000 people) will produce 3 square meters (9 square feet) of nuclear waste every year. This waste is then vitrified (combined with glass to immobilize it) then placed either in a concrete coffin or in deep underground repositories. There the useless radioactive material will sit, never to be seen again unless you go looking for it. Even with a geiger counter out you wouldn't know if you're standing anywhere near one of these repositories unless you read the sign.
