She would play the part of host and what not, but Travis' friends found it odd because she didn't actually live there. She never lived there as far as I know.

1) While residents were indeed evacuated in 2000, in 2005 they were allowed back to live there permanently.
2) According to a population survey, as of June 1, 2016, there are 2,415 people still living there. That's quite a lot of people for an island as small as Miyake-jima is, meaning it's much more people than a "virtually no residents left on the island" type scenario.
3) Conditions on the island are actually BETTER now than they were back then. Nowadays, gas masks are still required but do not need to be worn constantly while sirens alert residents of increases in toxic gases in the air. If anything, current residents have it easy compared to the ones from long ago.
4) Nearly everything said from 11:36 to 11:50 is false. Only a third of the island remains uninhabitable/abandoned while the rest is home to natural beauty and the homes and towns of the residents who chose to return in '05, even an airport that sees surprising traffic from tourists wanting to experience the island for themselves.
