It absolutely was because of the agreement. ALL cars from Japan would be limited down to 276 as they feared a 'horsepower race'.. I simply changed my exhaust on my 1jz to a full 3" turbo back, K&N intake filter , new plugs and gained a bag of power. People dyno them with these mods and get about 300-320 from the stock 276..
I've always been a RB boy. So personally I'd like a RB over a JZ.. But I like JZ's for what they are. Though I personally prefer the sound of the 1JZ compared to the 2JZ... prob because it sounds closer to a RB. But overall both kick ass and make stupid power. And in all honesty as much of a debate it is... its really down to Driver/Owner preference. Both have pro's and both have Cons. Though as the video says JZ's easier to find in the states and other places around the world RB's seem to be way of choice.
Vert344 even outside of the states 2jz is still the way to go. Its cheaper and more robust than the rb. Back in the day when my buddy was still hooked on imports, he built both of these engines. He is a skyline dude but he much prefer the 2jz now. I remember him giving me this analogy about these engines. “rb is like an ar15 and 2j is like an ak47. Both powerful but the ar15 is too finicky and expensive like a princess that needs constant cleaning and care while the ak... heck! Just throw it over there and forget about it!, we’ll just grab it when we need it”. I don’t know if this is true but ill take his words for it because his 1000plus hp rb build became a living room decoration while both his skylines are now 2j swapped. I remember him showing me that same rb when it first hit 600+hp with internal mods then he showed me the dyno of his 2j with just a bigger turbo, upraded fuel delivery system and a tune, He never touched the internals and it made more hp than his rb reliably. Back then, his 2jz was supposed to be just a toy, an engine that he was suppose to torture, stuff as much hp as he can and blow it up, It turned out to be better of the two. Don’t get me wrong, rbs are still a hell of an engine, its just that 2jz could do the more for less. The only thing i could think of thats better in the rb when i drove his cars is responsiveness. At higher rpms the rb seems more lively and responds better to throttle input while 2j felt a bit lazy like a v8.

Brb2jNdett it’s called a rb30 because it’s still 3.0liters of displacement. The rb28 is a 2.8L stroker kit. I guess the 1j head supposedly may flow a little better because of the even spacing of the exhaust ports, or that could be a GE 2j head, but regardless it’s negligible. You may as well just buy a complete 2j.
Gavin R you can work in a cadbury chocolate factory but prefer galaxy chocolate. people like tea with milk, while others prefer normal tea, tea with sugar, tea with honey or they don't like tea at all. the example I gave is stupid but you know what i mean hahaha
DziadekMroz6666 they don't typically make as much on the Dyno when you Dyno them bone stock. But most people don't do all that work just to keep it completely stock either.
The 2JZ GTE didn't actually make 276hp, per the japanese automakers gentlemens agreement, they refused to advertise cars as having more than 276hp, when in reality engines made a lot more than that, like theres a reason the RX7 13B and GTR RB26 both make exactly "276". They don't. The RX7 FD twin turbo made around if not higher than 300hp stock. The 2JZ made 320 roughly from the factory as did the RB26. Do your research for once.
2j wins hands down. But im more intersted in a car v car comparison. I have a r32 gts-4 with mods and i love driving it much more than an mk3 supra even though its not as fast.
Missed something vital here, the RB26DETT is all aluminum and weighs 406lbs. The 2JZ has a iron block and tips the scales at over 594lbs, weighs more 1GZ V12. Just to troll a LS is only about 375lbs and you can make well over 600whp without forced induction. As a rotary owner I would just know these things for reasons.
Haha funny that you showed the JGTC Supra, cause it never had the 2jz. First it got a 4 banger (3SG) and then a v8 (3UZ-FE) :D Nissan stuck to their guns with the RB but they lost against the Supra (lighter engine)...

That 50K figure is misleading and not presented well. The majority of enthusiasts understand you can build a solid and consistent 1000hp RB or JZ block for ~$15-$20K. The remaining funds to suspension, brake, wheel/tire, differential/clutch upgrades?!
RB power plants are far more expensive to build than a jz. Especially if you’re in America. To get a reliable 1000hp out of either engine, you have to build the block, upgrade fuel system, bigger turbo set up etc etc... both will run you 30,000$ and up for parts alone, easy. Titus Sherlock Sorry. I ran across another guy two days ago talking about how Toyota’s V4’s were “Literally the least reliable engines on the planet” blah blah blah. I have always owned 3S-GTE engines and despite the 21PSI daily driven I’ve never had one fail. It was still in my head apparently. Carry on with my apologies, sir.
I have an 34 gtr in standard 2.6 displacement and stock turbos. As a weekend car its great but for a daily i would prefer the 2j, unless i were to stroke the rb to 2.8 or even a 3.2 with an rb30 block. The low end torque is lacking, especially with a light flywheel and twin plate clutch. Great video!
When you build both Engines they are incredible in sound and performance but in the end everyone has his own taste I hope they develop and bring back those incredible Engines
Like to add though that GT-Rs from parts, to the car itself is naturally more expensive than a Supra, that has been the case in the land where they’re born - Japan, ever since. As for the choice it’s gotta be RB26 FTW, it's more iconic, sounds better, revs higher, lighter, ITBs, and basically, the car where it belongs to is a legend. The GT-R bloodline's motorsports resume is the stuff other sportscars can only dream of.
Agree. Lucky enough to be driving a BNR32, BNR34 and A80. And I can tell, the status of these beasts deeply varies. In Japan, they really don’t care much about Supras, that’s why we got a good one for cheap! Which is good. Parts are cheaper too compared to Gtr parts. But the pleasure of owning and driving a “Godzilla” makes up for its high price. Haha! Both very different. One is a straight tearing monster, while the other is a versatile assassin. Both very fun to drive, I just choose based on my mood. Lol. At the end though, since I’m not into dyno queens and stuff, I would also choose the RB26 over the 2Jz, what more the car where they belong to. Lol.
You guys are gonna hate my bud. He is a skyline gtr nut but when he tried to destroy a junkyard 2jz by stuffing as much power as he without touching the internals, he fell in love with it. So much so that both of his r32s are now 2jz swapped. Gtr is a waayyy better car than the supra, it is a mythic creature in japan and in some parts of the world but the 2jz became a legend on its own around the world even without a racing pedigree and inside a crapy car. Now that is impressive. Gtr>>>supra 2jz>rb26
flipgod I like the 2jz but lets be honest there is no point to doing that like you already have an engine the rb26 which is a good engine inside of the car so it would juat be a waste of money
Haha thats classic, Im pretty sure youre trolling. Youre still missing all the other good stuff in the skyline though, such as a helpful tuning display in the center telling you your oil pressure, water temperature, boost, exhaust temperature, throttle sensitivity and about 5 other bars that I cant remember what they do! And thats before you got to the higher spec'd GTRs. Greatest platformer if the price wasnt through the roof, supra wins because its cheap haha.
The RB26DETT cubic centimeters is 2568cc not 2598cc. Also the clips which you showed the JGTC Castrol Supra. That car actually used a smaller engine, due to the 2JZ being too heavy and not being so competitive to the GT-R's. So they actually have a Inline 4 3SGTE. The engine from the SW20 MR2. Besides that. The video was pretty informative and good. Enjoyed watching it.
Both legendary Japanese motors, but the RB is just so much more exotic...and even bone stock they sound amazing on the pipe. I love violent cars, some of these newer performance cars are just so much tamer than the older legends. You haven't lived until you've been in a truly obnoxious car, one that hurts your soul when you stand on the throttle.
Rb26 still have wider powerband. Thats the reason skylines are better on the track. Having lots of tourque is good, having a little less across a wider rpm range is better for acceleration. Assuming that gearing ratio is the same of course.
In japan when they were making performance cars in the 90s they came to a gentleman’s agreement to only make cars with 276 hp or less. Now obviously they didn’t make them strictly to that figure. They just made them to whatever power level they could/felt, all they did was just lost is as 276 hp at the wheels to get away with it.
Both of these engines were most definitely underrated in stock trim due to the government of japans “gentleman “ agreement. Which was much like American automakers underrating their muscle cars in the 60’s to satisfy insurance companies.
The 2JZ is the better engine from factory. It’s hard to go past forged internals and it solved the harmonic and oil pump issues that plagued stock (non-N1/R34) RBs. A Built N1 or RRR block stroked to 2.8 is probably the closest rival to the 2J (assuming both are built) outside billet Rb30s. Both are fantastic engines though. I have an RB25DET NEO in my car and it’s honestly such a pleasure to drive, I don’t see myself needing anything else.
RB26>2JZ for me. Im a racing fan, so nah not pursuing big numbers. 600hp Mine's Skyline R34 GTR 59 sec lap time ftw. No weight reduction with a few bits of aero. What a dream.

So much so that both of his r32s are now 2jz swapped. Gtr is a waayyy better car than the supra, it is a mythic creature in japan and in some parts of the world but the 2jz became a legend on its own around the world even without a racing pedigree and inside a crapy car. Now that is impressive.
Gtr>>>supra
2jz>rb26
I'm gonna have to go 2JZ.. it's what I got, and I love it
i would have a 2jz in a r34
you could but that would be silly. The standard r34 is actually faster than the supra by nearly a full second in 0-100
flipgod
I like the 2jz but lets be honest there is no point to doing that like you already have an engine the rb26 which is a good engine inside of the car so it would juat be a waste of money
I would have a rb26 (awd) in a supra
Haha thats classic, Im pretty sure youre trolling. Youre still missing all the other good stuff in the skyline though, such as a helpful tuning display in the center telling you your oil pressure, water temperature, boost, exhaust temperature, throttle sensitivity and about 5 other bars that I cant remember what they do! And thats before you got to the higher spec'd GTRs. Greatest platformer if the price wasnt through the roof, supra wins because its cheap haha.
Put a 2 rotor in my r33
I feel like the RB26 sounds much more raw 😍😍 but it’s a hard one I love both soo much
Toyota vs tin can manufacturer.
When the tin can manufacturer beats a Toyota though
MilesGC1999 Toyota makes the camry and prius. Insult invalid
Khairul Afiq it never and will not beat a Toyota wtf are you smoking 😂😂
:D Nissan makes the juke and the murano crossover. Insult invalid
H4554N Nowhere as bad as the Camry, Corolla and Prius. Counter Insult Invalid
2JZ, the sound is just so could be i still do respect the RB26
The entire RB series for me, although I am a sucker for the 1jz
And I'm here stuck with a 3SGE & 3SGTE.
Will have a 2JZ-GTE some day! But the RB sounds soo good
Which is better for tuning (i dont mind about the price)
Can U do a video on Barra engines
They are Rivals and brothers at the same time, they are both great in their own ways
That 276 was the gentlemans agreement
They both pushed more than that stock
Man I have to choose? I'll take both! 😁
both are MONSTERR!!!!
So I have a 4 door r33 I want to swap a 2j or a rb26 witch one should I get
The RB26DETT cubic centimeters is 2568cc not 2598cc.
Love them both but the vr30 motor is the modern day equivalent. Ams is doing some crazy stuff with that engine.
This gods never stop figthing 🔥🔥🔥
Hard choice.. cant even choose between RB or 2jz love them both :D
I'm a Lexus /Toyota guy so it's the 2JZ for me but, I have mad respect for RB and the Skyline.
RB26 4 ME BUT I THINK BOTH OF THEM ARE GREAT... I ONLY CHOOSE THE RB BECAUSE OF ITS AMAZING SOUND
2JZ is the better engine by strength and power outputs. RB26 still remains my favourite, sounds better and it worth price to pay
Rb26 still have wider powerband. Thats the reason skylines are better on the track. Having lots of tourque is good, having a little less across a wider rpm range is better for acceleration. Assuming that gearing ratio is the same of course.
I like them both alot, however I prefer the RB because of the redline, the sound, and the skyline itself.
Both are Japanese Legends, Both are the best of what Japan can offer. As a car enthusiast, I can't choose between the two cousins.
Which would I have? Neither my pick is the Barra 270T 360hp stock and 500hp with just HFC, injectors and cooler piping 👍👍👍

Ahhh... the good ol' GT3 days...
ooh its hard to choose cause i like both cars and engine
Big factor would be the transmission..because just the fact of the AWD system in the R34 that makes the difference for me
RB26 in a 240Z, now that's a dream car.
One of each of course
woooww this comparison has never been done before, ever. wow
I think both are great.
Rb allll the way favorite motors out there
RB26>2JZ for me. Im a racing fan, so nah not pursuing big numbers. 600hp Mine's Skyline R34 GTR 59 sec lap time ftw. No weight reduction with a few bits of aero. What a dream.
