I think the argument at 21:00 about “you don’t want to play these games. If you did, you’d already be playing them” is kinda a bad argument. I think it’s fair that a lot of people do want to experience the classic games, even if they aren’t emulating them currently. This is because emulating them still comes with its own issues. I’ve been playing MH2 and frontier lately, and the player counts are pretty low some days. Last weekend there were only 10 players online (at least, when I checked). The amount of those players who were a similar HR to me was even lower. A port of older games to the switch or steam would have way more players, even if it’s not as much as games like world or rise. Another issue is that emulators can be taxing to run, so if someone only has a laptop or an older computer to play with, it might simple not be a viable way to play. They might be able to get away with acceptable performance if they don’t use any enhanced textures or a low resolution or something, but at that point it might not seem worth it anymore. That doesn’t mean they don’t want to play the games, it just means they have a set of standards they don’t want to go below. It isn’t really fair to say someone doesn’t truly want to play an old MH title just because they aren’t currently emulating it. The emulations currently available just might not be up to someone’s expectations. They still want to play the games, they just don’t want an experience beneath their standards.
yeah Id have a lot more friends to play with if these classics were on steam. Not everyone has the patience for emulators, let alone configuring them for online multiplayer
Not to mention, emulation is still heavily frowned upon. It's a bit disingenuous for the video to equate not emulating as a way to confirm the person doesn't want a classic game. I agree with this post. Every single portal game (PSP/3ds) has clunky controls and blurred PS2 graphics. It's not unthinkable that a monster hunter fan who tried MH world and wants to now try the older titles with a different controller (even keyboard) + it be optimized at 30-60 fps on their official hardware.
I was gonna mention this same thing, primarily the player count issue. I don't want to not set up an emulator, I want to have randoms to play with that are my level and I want to be able to convince my friends to play it with me more easily. Like, if they just released an identical emulation of the game, gave it a seal of approval, and put it on steam, and set up a few servers, there'd be SO many more players than what the emulators currently have.
Trying to emulating DOS is a pain in the ass, acquiring the game, acquiring a PS2 and learning how to extra the files has been annoying and expensive. I am no good with computers, and so it has been an extremely annoying process and I haven't even gotten it working yet. Jakob is right in the broader sense that yes there is a smaller market for it, but when he uses the low player counts in these games as evidence that few people want to play them, I get frustrated because I would pay over $100 for the game on steam if I didn't have to do all of this nonsense, and it would be WAY cheaper than that and WAY easier to get friends to play.
PS2 emulation is stupid fast for years now thanks to Vulkan API. It pretty much fix every single emulation problems 3DS emulation is matured now, to a point you could put in 60 FPS cap cheat code and its 100% fine Capcom Japan want you to play their latest Monster Hunter games, not old ones
No no no. Emulation IS necessary but piracy is not. Most publishers don’t give a shit if you emulate old games and it’s in fact legal. Pirating is when you do not pay for a new game and basically steal it. That’s just scummy.
@@juantsu2000 let's be honest. Functionally, there is zero difference between me buying a game from some dude off ebay and ripping it for emulation, and me just pirating the rom and playing it like that. Both include not giving any money to a company. Pirating is just less steps and less money. It's not stealing, it's just copyright infringement.
@@DreamEatinDonuts That’s the difference. Pirating and Emulation are connected but not the same thing. You CAN use emulation to pirate games (which is bad and illegal) but you can also use emulation to play games no longer in circulation and for preservation (which is good and entirely legal). It all comes down to how someone uses the tool of emulation.
@@juantsu2000 I do agree with you, piracy is never the answer. HOWEVER, 20 years from now when you feel like playing the game and the only way to get it is to buy a version that is over 200 dollars, then what? Companies NEED to give access to these older titles otherwise people will resort to piracy.
The argument about people getting confused at 15:15 and about people not really wanting to play them at 21:00 are deeply misguided. With even remotely proper marketing and a discounted price tag no one would ever be confused about what the remasters are. As for playing them, I don't play them because I want to play them with my friends and talking my friends into playing emulated versions online is like pulling teeth. I consistently load up save files to play through a few hunts alone but grinding out thru G rank solo is just not an enjoyable experience for me. I can boot them up and playthrough the core story campaigns again but that's only a fraction of the fun even if that 20-30ish hour romp will satisfy my core craving for revisiting an old MH. Genuinely weird seeing how confident you are. "Oh you want to play an old MonHun? Just mod your old systems or PC emulate!" Nah man that isn't how most people work at all. I am personally down for that stuff but the vast majority aren't. No matter how easy system modding is people will be too scared to do it and no matter how accessible 3DS and Wii emulation is there are still loads of people who don't have a PC or just don't have any interest not playing official releases on official hardware. When there are dozens of games people want to play at any moment of course they will choose to just play whatever is in their purchased game library or list of soon-to-release titles instead of trying to load up emulators or mod an old system to *legally download games and connect to pirate servers*. If remasters don't work why do you think so mant companies still do them?
Anyone invested enough to watch hours of content related to video game serious is probably a weirdo, but we are the minority you know, most people just see a game ad somewhere and buy it, play it (probably not even finish it cuz they have full functioning lives) and move on.
"you don't want this or you'd be playing it already" Sorry but I think I know what I'd like to spend my money on more than you. I'd much rather support an official release of these games and have the opportunity for more people in the mainstream audience to try them and I'd also rather not go through the inherent issues of setting up emulatirs and/or buying a steamdeck and setting it up on that, and believe it or not there are alot of people today, that just straight up don't have access to a PC but do have access to ganing devices. I'd also like to see capcom continue to preserve games in some way similar to what they've been doing with old ports and collections. It's not nearly as simple as just saying "oh well if you really wanted it to be ported you'd be playing it literally right now through emulation"
21:00 Ok, I get what your saying here, but even if your already playing a game, it's not impossible to still want a "better" port of said game. I recently started playing 4U on the Citra emulator. I wanted to play online but was not far enough into the game to play with people that were way ahead of me. So my only option was to play with my cousin who has also never played 4U, but because he was busy with school stuff I had to wait for him to have enough free time to play. Just my luck then that the moment he was ready to start the game the servers for citra were shut down. When I say I want a port of 4U, I literally mean I just want a way to play online, which means until that opportunity comes around again, I'll always want a new port even if I'm currently playing the game on my own. I don't even care how good the game looks, I just wanna play online.
The ports aren't perfect for example with Monster Hunter G Wii they didn't adapt bounce and hitlag calculations to use how the Wii calculates floating points. This causes a major balance change with Blue sharpness working differently compared to the PS2 game. It causes blue sharpness to not bounce against 20 HZ's which is a lot of HZ's and causes 80 HZ's to get hitstop instead of hitlag. The reason I call this a big is because the exact same thing happens with PCSX2 since it also calculates floating points different than the PS2.
This is really interesting, and something I hope emu devs take into account in the future. It reminds me of how there are a bunch of old romhacks that don't work on modern emulators because they were designed with ZSNES or w/e in mind, and that era of emulation was focused entirely on just getting things to run at all, accuracy be damned.
@@TNB12 I don't have any for the change in bounces, I do have a video that shows off the increased hitlag. I also have lists of every hitzone that is bugged in the MHOldschool server.
@@galactica_2True, High Rank Caravan was the most fun i had with anything in general for a time in my life. It occupied my thoughts for several moments throught the days, i could only think of playing it.
I know your right but I'm gonna happily live in my fantasy land believing until the end of time that it will happen, thanks Fr tho I don't want you to be right
I do appreciate you pointing out the people in your community are not the average MH fan. Its kinda easy for me to lose sight of that because I'm just so into this series and I have an insular view of the people who play it. I understand most of your points in the video and I think your logic is consistent but I do think Capcom still has a lot to gain from rereleasing some older titles. I feel like there's been instances of newer entries in series gaining traction, and giving teams the go ahead to remaster/remake an older game. Off the top I'm thinking of Nier Replicant, which isn't the greatest selling game of all time or anything, but it blows the original's numbers out of the water and got invested newer fans in an older story. Nier isn't a 1:1 comparison to MH for a million different reasons, but I think they're similar in the sense that they're very nerdy series whose highest selling games blew up, and gained a bunch of "normie" fans who don't necessarily engage with older content.
I see your point, i dont agree, taking MH4U or 4G as an example, til today there's a lot of japanese fans streaming this game daily, and for a live stream to daily get 3k-4k views, isnt a small thing, so there is a LOT, and i mean A LOT of people that would love to play the older games in more recent hardware. Now the thing is, yes, Capcom wants our money, Capcom wants to sell mostly to the newer fans and bla bla bla, still, they could do the very minimal with porting those games and they still would gain some money, i even think porting a game is the best cheap way of getting more money in the game industry, after all, games like Shadow of The Colossus or the Kingdom Hearts franchise gained a lot of money just by porting their games to other platforms, and, for Kingdom Hearts which is a series that's still going on, this never affected their newer games sales. So its just stupid that they dont wanna port at least some of the older games, its not just to make us fans satisfied, they would gain quite a lot of money for that.
@@Frostelus_mhThe Steam Deck is literally a Monster Hunter machine, it’s crazy that one device can play every mainline entry. I played Rise, P3rd, Tri, and 4U on it. FU is for sure on the horizon.
I'm only halfway through the video rn but i wanna mention that while i do agree that Monster Hunter has MMO aspects to it, especially MHW, MH is not an MMORPG. With the reasoning given in this video so far, you could argue Pokémon is an MMORPG. But it's certainly interesting and important to think and argue about what Genre MH fits into and what it should fit into. Calling back to the Dos review and the simulation genre
It’s odd that you mention MHW as being like an MMORPG when its honestly toned pretty far back. Many older games have had huge “city” areas with enormous dedicated rooms for just one purpose. Like market areas, forges, taverns, etc. Think the OG Minegard, Dundorma, and Loc Lac. They had player counts in these areas up to ~10, rotating special events just like World, and so on. They look very similar to a classic MMO experience.
I've been messing with dos and G cause the servers are back, and those are the ones that feel the most like MMOs to me (and tri to a lesser extent). It's not major, but they have that vibe.
Completely disagree on "if you'd want classic games you'd be playing them already" part I AM already going through older titles, but I definitely would love not to have to waste my time and energy tinkering with emulators, would love being able to see if someone in my Steam friend list is playing rn and play with them seamlessly and play with tuned up visuals
I absolutely disagree with the take that "if you wanted to play these games you already would be". A lot of people either do not know how or do not want to emulate. Legal emulation entails actually owning the hardware, and usually modifying that hardware to dump the ISO or ROM file in order to play it through emulation. In addition, almost all of the ways to play these games online has a much more involved process to access the private servers than just booting the game up and choosing to play online. Not to mention that not everyone even knows these player run private servers exist. Yes, a dedicated fan will jump through those hoops, but it's incredibly disingenuous to say that online play in private servers for Freedom Unite through PPSSPP doesn't have a significantly larger barrier to entry than playing World online. I have multiple friends who have expressed interest in playing Freedom Unite online with me but don't want to go through all of the steps mentioned above. Not to mention the monetary aspect of it. Legal emulation of a PSP game requires owning the game and a PSP, as well as a computer that can emulate the game (which, tbf the hardware requirements for PPSSPP are pretty generous). Just the PSP and a copy of Freedom Unite costs on average about $200 USD. Not everyone is willing to dump that much money just to legally emulate a game, not to mention the process of installing custom firmware to dump the ISO file, which isn't something the average consumer is willing to go through to process of doing. Edit: Furthermore, Capcom absolutely has the resources to dedicate a relatively small team to creating ports of these games, or could outsource the process. Capcom absolutely has expressed interest in preserving their classic titles through stuff like the 30th anniversary Street Fighter Collection and the Megaman Legacy Collection, Battle Network Colletion, Resident Evil 1 getting a Steam Port, and more. And those titles are usually released on multiple platforms. Implying that there isn't a precedent for Capcom preserving their classic titles is absolutely not true. Monster Hunter just gets very weird treatment.
This reminds me of when Elden Ring came out and everyone started to say how outdated and ancient the Souls trilogy was, I was so confused until they dropped the number of sales for Elden Ring, and now there's a whole new audience that overshadows us veterans and it makes you worried for the future games.
Fromsoft will never make a Demon's Souls / Dark Souls 1-tier game ever again, the focus on the shallow combat is too heavy now. It was never just about the combat but they keep pushing the limits of their depthless r1r1 dodge gameplay with no significant change.
@@_Crowuh Sad but true, I'm very well aware of that but with each new fromsoft game and even new souls-like games I still go in with hopes of finding just a smidgen of that ds1 experience. They really don't make 'em like the used to anymore.
It’s a never ending cycle. Start with starry eyes as a new player that’s weirded out by people being worried that a series is going in a direction you like. Then eventually become the person who’s worried.
@@ironghost935because they should not. that what make them stand out, by constantly changing and improving on their games. I would be very sad if they made dark souls 4 and not elden ring or sekiro. It is clear that they reach their limit with dark souls 3 and they should move on
I dunno, that feels kinda different to me. All the Dark Souls games are available on PC, and the series was clearly meant to be a trilogy with a definitive ending, not big franchise that gets sequels forever.
I imported MHP3 and put an English patch on my PSP. Very fun game, and I felt a sense of accomplishments for getting all that done and getting to enjoy it. Was great to see Zinogre's first appearance, and the game was relatively easy, so it was solo friendly.
I love the village, and the hotsprings/drinks are so charming, I wish they’d bring back that system. Edit: I’ve also always been in love with Misty Peaks since 3U, so it was great getting to see it again.
Agreed mostly with the reasoning presented in the video. I think other points are that this series has pretty frequent releases, and are pretty multiplayer focused. Not only does running servers like these cost money, an issue cheap ports of old singleplayer games don't have, but they would be competing with themselves, newer MH releases. They want as many people playing online on these to retain a lively online scene until the next game, especially with stuff like sieges. Having more games to fill time while MH releases are pretty close together already will just lead to burnout, and might leave newer/casual players with a more negative experience, like you said Maybe they'll consider it if a game is delayed, like Wilds was according to leaks, but I'm not holding my breath
A good developer knows how to balance between listening to the casual majority and the hardcore minority. Both sides of the community are important to keep a game or even a franchise fresh but still true to its initial vision regardless of how many iterations they make. Unfortunately Capcom nowadays only follows one thing, money, and we are all well aware which part of the fanbase provides that to them the most.
Yeah but both MH Rise and World have a good fan base that is Not worried about the future of the games. I only see hardcore players worried, and they are a VERY very small portion of the player base
A good example is that Capcom preferred to remake Resident Evil 1-4 instead of making ports. They're not really a company that goes for ports as you said. They know if people want to play the old games they can track them down.
8:40 I remember back in the day that news came out that Japan was going to pay per online hunt. It was going to be 1 wii point per hunt. Don't know if in the end they implemented that system
Yeah well counter arguments: Ace Attorney, Megaman and Street Fighter Collections exist They literally just ported MH Stories 1 and 2 to Ps4 and, correct me if Im wrong, MH Stories is not MHW 2 so they are supposed to be pointless right?
Capcom isn’t a single entity where all decisions from all series can be applied to each other. It’s a massive company where different groups and teams work on different projects. And not only that, but different logic could easily be applied to different series the same way we apply different logic to them. Just like we would say “simulation mechanics don’t belong in Monster Hunter”, they could say “Monster Hunter mainline appeals to mainstream gamers now, so it should always be pushing new content and be on new gen hardware. Stories is casual so we can remake that, though.” The logic doesn’t have to make sense, just as long as it is justified and appeals to suits.
"you don’t want to play these games. If you did, you’d already be playing them" what if i find emulating the controls on a keyboard a fucking nightmare?
I agree with this video but if Wilds doesn't release on the next Nintendo console, i could see them doing a GU type thing and putting out something there until the next "portable" team game. (tho realistically it would probably be like a 60fps Rise)
With respect to Nintendo gamers, I really hope that it doesn't come out on the switch, as that would serverly limit how much they can do with it, and I'm not having another MH game end up like Rise due to hardware limitations.
@@candacefullrv9291Tbf to Rise it was nice getting to play a MH game with maxed out settings at 144 fps. So while maybe this is a hot take, as long as it looks decent on PC I’m fine with it sacrificing graphical fidelity to make it onto the Switch or Switch 2 or whatever.
@@CaptainEffort I actually quite like how Rise looks, it goes back to the style of the other games. I didn't care for the more realistic style of MHWorld and it's more muted colors. That being said I love how world actually felt like an ecosystem compared to any other game, which seems like what wilds is going for as well.
I agree with your thesis and your main arguments, though I think it errs on being over-cynical. and kinda doomer? You say "the #1 priority for Capcom is to make another monster hunter world. nothing else matters." It would be a bit more accurate to say their #1 priority is to make a profit. because Rise was very obviously not another World, but it was still made, and it sold very well. yes, World still outsold it, and yes, there are people on the internet being weird about it. but it is still the second highest selling game in the franchise by a clear margin and I'd be surprised if Capcom did not see it as a success. there are other MH games like MHNow that I don't play or understand, but which paint a broader picture for Capcom's strategy for this franchise. it's not just Wilds or bust. Porting the classic games at this point still doesn't make sense for the other reasons you've outlined; they've already been ported, they've had their chance to gain an audience, they could dilute the identity of the franchise and create legitimate confusion (not just among rabid internet weirdos but genuinely, the MH series progression is confusing to any ordinary person), and obviously, return on investment. basically, profit. but if any of those things changed and we could expect a classic MH port to be profitable, then it might happen. I personally think the old games are always going to be a hard sell for new audiences, and the old audience isn't large enough to justify it, so the math just don't math. in an alternate universe where World/Rise got enough people really excited to go back and play Freedom Unite, it could have been brought to the Switch or Switch 2. but again I don't think the demand is there. also, I really don't think youtube and tiktok comments from fanboys matter that much or can be used to understand corporate strategy. they don't speak for the 30 million people that bought MHWorld. they are just a different hyper-focused minority that happens to be playing the more popular game.
Sorry pal but that arguement at 21:00 is kinda trash. I like the video alltogether and I am biased as hell, but my computer is complete shite and it cannot emulate anything outside of Frontier (somehow). That, and being personally a fan of MH3U & 4U, there *is* no servers for that in the same way that gens 1,2 and some of 3 already have. So Emulation is a no go, I want a port so I can have more people to play the games I really like.
Emulation requires your pc to handle both the system its trying to emulate and the game that you want to play on it at the same time, which is why emulating something like GU can be a bit more demanding that it seems since the Nintendo Switch is decently powerful (despite being the weakest of the 3 consoles in the market at the time), however Frontier was made for the PC so an emulation program is not needed, and thus its easier for your pc to handle it.
Not to mention emulating DS/3DS sucks on a base level by having the two screens, sure emulators let you customize the size and position of each screen as you want but it's such a huge downgrade compared to hardware, but at least MH doesn't do anything too interesting with the second screen Also while emulating 3DS is kinda easy and they run "well" I see nobody mention how BAD the upscaling and filters 3DS emulators have like jeez learn something from PPSSPP would you, I feel personally attacked when I see some of these antialiasing filters these emulators have.
There is something real and valuable to having a faithful port on PC - not locked to aging, ever-harder-to-repair hardware - with Steam friends list and servers, and without the dubious legality of emulation. I'm not playing these games on emulator for all of those reasons. I want to play these games legitimately, not skirting the law. Not locked into having an online pool of niche discord servers. Not dealing with bugs nobody's ever seen or dealt with, because newsflash, free software is done by hobbyists.
There was a lot of weird assumptions in this video, but I do think the core thesis that MH is essentiallly a live service game with multiple installments is fairly compelling. The biggest thing id push back on is that Capcom is a corporation made up of hundreds of people. You have no idea what "Capcom" wants because Capcom wants nothing. Its a corporation. I'm sure the devs at Capcom have very differing views on the games, as any large group of individuals tend to.
“you don’t want to play these games. If you did, you’d already be playing them” was hard to hear. I am playing these games, I love them, and they deserve better. Emulation is great, but it's not perfect. With a native PC port we could get a much better experience. Widescreen without any kind of stretching, better frame rate (better performance overall, since emulation can be quite taxing), potentially more stable servers, and the list goes on. And for sure, people would be more receptive of these games if they didn't have to go through a bunch of hoops to play them, especially since the majority is afraid of computers. Even with PS2 emulation getting vastly better, people cemented in their heads that it's awful, with no improvements over the span of ten years. They barely know about the newer versions. Not to say emulators being taken down and being harder to get (doesn't really happen that often, but it happens). This kind of speech just helps to perpetuate the idea that the old games are "obsolete" and not worth playing. Basically any discussion online on mainstream websites will dismiss anything besides 4th and 5th gen, with GU being considered the "definite old school experience". All the Monster Hunter titles are different from each other, and all of them are important. All of them are worth experiencing, from the Japanese version of 1 to Rise.
honestly, emulation is just the best way to experience games like these. because people want something LIKE it why don't just HAVE it. there are a lot of problems and not a lot of polish in the old games. but if you love it so much. just enjoy it. you have it. use it. don't pay 60 bucks for an old title. enjoy what we got.
like I personally started with monster hunter tri, but now that I've played World and Rise, I find it frustrating to go back to older games, not because of mechanitcs or anything like that, but because I have to go back to playing on controller.
Very well said. You're right. I used to keep saying that it'd be the perfect time to do a bundle of the classic titles on Steam but, looking at it this way... They might as well just make a new game. Dang. GU getting a port would make the most sense by this logic and it's still current. By the time they take the server for THAT down, I imagine we'd be looking at a Wild G-title and/or a 6th Gen Portable Title...
3U and 4U need ports… no I’m not biased. But for real, this sentiment makes me worry for another game series… which is Zelda, after totk came out aunoma mentioned that in his opinion Totk is objectively superior to the old games, and the only reason we long for a return is due to nostalgia.. like what?
Yeah BotW and TotK reminded me a lot of MH, at least in how the games “evolved” and how the fanbase has been split by it. I’ve seen so many BotW fans say that the older games are objectively worse, and that anyone who prefers them are just nostalgic. What does that remind you of?
@@CaptainEffort It's kinda tru imo. I mean everyone can have their opinion, but most people new and old fans enjoy BOW. Returning to the past wouldn't feel good I guess
@@matzmilan7780 Imo they’re just different games, they can’t really be compared. They set out to do different things and are thus enjoyed by different people. I never played Zelda games growing up, so I have zero bias here, and I can tell you that while I enjoyed BotW well enough, I *loved* Windwaker when I tried it last year. And earlier this year I tried A Link Between Worlds and had a blast. I’m planning on playing Minish Cap or Ocarina next. So I actually enjoy the older entries despite not growing up with them. But I stand by the idea that they’re simply too different to even be compared, BotW is amazing in what it sets out to do, just as the prior games are amazing in what they set out to do.
@@CaptainEffortit was also way harder as you couldnt look things up online. I played oot when it came out and i was stumped for weeks in the forest temple, it was so great when i figured it out. Nowadays those puzzles are trivial and youtube is serving you up spoilers nonstop
What you say is 100% true, and I hate it. I hated World, and for a long time I couldn't really put my finger on why, but Rise helped me figure it out. World's maps are designed to be "realistic", and previous game maps were designed to be game maps. World's maps are often a pain to navigate, hence the introduction of fast travel and multiple camps, but previous game maps were designed to be segmented, easily navigated arenas that happened to resemble various biomes. This change alone made World nearly unplayable for me, because by making a "rich, vibrant world", they made the game less fun to move through. But I am alone in this. The overwhelming majority of players go "WHOA COOL GRAFIX" and don't think about it beyond that. That's why Rise was less popular, because it looked (slightly) worse. And this is not a new phenomenon, it goes back to the 80s and 90s. There was a period where any 2D game was considered automatically inferior to any 3D game, and it led to galaxy brain takes like "Castlevania 64 is better than Symphony of the Night because 3D good 2D bad", and that perception has only really changed because Symphony's graphics aged like wine, and Castlevania 64 like milk. The playability or quality of a game is genuinely irrelevant if it's pretty enough because most people have smooth monkey brains that deliver dopamine for looking at shinies.
@@matzmilan7780 Yes, that's correct, I don't like it, and most do. I don't care as much about graphics in games, and most people do. History has shown that a graphics-first mindset leads to incorrect assessment of games, and I am directly implying that that's what's happening here. World isn't a BAD game, it's not even the worst Monster Hunter, but compared to the heights of 4U and GU, it falls well short. I think it's worse than 3U, too, but that was my first MonHun and so it's not fair to use it as comparison.
Good grief dude, the strawmanning on display here is insane. 4 Ultimate is my favorite entry by a long shot but World Iceborne has become my second favorite more recently, and it's not because of the graphics because the game did initially put me off at first. I came around to it because I enjoy how it plays, not just because I'm a smooth brained idiot who only cares about graphics as you seem to put it.
agree mostly, but the point about "you would be emulating or obtaining the games if you actually wanted to play them" misses the mark considerably- outside of NA regions, it can be pretty difficult to get a hold of old hardware, especially in a functional state, not to mention also trying to track down functioning game copies for reasonable prices, but then there's the factor of no MP, which for many people MP is a big part of the experience, then on the emulation side- not every country allows you to emulate, so you could be risking fines in your attempt to obtain roms, - or buy a VPN to do it, then there's the imperfection of emulation, the moral ambiguity of emulation, etc etc. There are absolutely people who want to play these games, as they were, but due to regional, financial or moral reasons cannot.
a quick part 2, I've already emulated almost every game and have even helped on the frontier restoration project, and developed tools that allow you to add brand new content to the game, I am exceptionally obsessed with this franchise and also have the privilege to be able to hyper-fixate so much on it lol
nobody is gettin arrested or getting fines for piracy, at least from the common population XD also theres no moral ambiguity exactly because these games dont have ports. they all are under completely dead consoles, at least up until generation ultimate. even if you were to buy a physical copy of a game it has to be on the second hand market and at that point you arent supporting the original creators. companies can say that its worng all they want, but at that point the consumer simply has zero responsibility to maintain any kind of loyalty, because its not even possible to do so even if they wanted to. the biggest issue on the emulation side of things is simply that not everyone will have devices capable of running some of these emulators. like citra for example is known for being very finicky and unoptimized.
@@samuraibeluga3749 "the common population" you mean America? lol you forget there is an entire planet with different laws, people do get fined for emulation and piracy, hell even in America if you download a ROM many ISPs will fine you for doing something you shouldn't be, many people are uncomfortable with piracy, regardless of the circumstances, it doesn't matter if you agree or not, that is reality. the rest of what you said just shows you didn't bother reading what I said anyway, mature your view of the world.
@@SirTeetan i mean common folk in general i never said anything about america in specific, im not even american myself XD you assume too much. im also not denying the reality that there may be some people who are still uncomfortable, and they are in their right, doesnt mean their reasoning is sound though, and you would be foolish to believe that they belong in any kind of majority. do you realize how many people pirate shit? everyone would be fined left and right. the reason a lot more dont is because they lack the knowledge to do so, not because they are afraid. they arent after small fry, they are after owners of distributions sites, and even emulators like the recent case of nintendo going after yuzu and citra. authorities dont care about you, as long as you arent involved in distribution (although understadably they may use you indirectly to find out about these distributors, but government and authorities having your information is nothing new and is not reserved to just people who pirate stuff unfortunately) . so yeah keep agreeing with the status quo and treating piracy like a boogey man while the rest of us enjoy the shit companies cant bother to offer official support to. i dont know why you getting so pissy, i just slightly disagreed with you...
Yea right, if they port any of the games for modern hardware they will be a single game most likely the g versions and it would be a minimum 40 dollar price tag. And we will all buy it…
21:00 what a garbage point and don't hit us with the "look at me I had a special inport of these games and I don't even speak Japanese you just lack effort". Some of us don't have the income to track down original hardware or build a gaming pc.I do still play the old titles on original hardware. My wii u gamepad will no longer hold a charge so I have to be tethered the entire time I play my 2ds(never had enough money for the 3ds) thumbstick drifts and I don't have a pc so emulation is out of the question. But I do have a switch and I would love ports of the old games.
Hasn't Capcom always listened to the majority? Are they listening more towards World fans because thats where the profit lies? Yeah. They have done the same thing since the beginning. Its the reason why Dos, Portable 3rd, etc, was never released internationally. The Japanese market was much bigger than the western ones. The same thing is happening now, theres more profit in a game like World than there is in a port. And thats business. Capcom doesnt make Monster Hunter so that we can live in our fantasy world, they make Monster Hunter to make money. Theres nothing wrong with that, its just how business is run. Personally I dont really care if there is a port or remake (even if they did remake the old games it would just be Monster Hunter World with a coat of oldschool paint on it). The only thing I wish capcom did was keep the online servers up for older games, however I understand that over time the amount of people playing does not justify the cost of running them. At the moment alot of the Monster Hunter games that have had online functionality shut down for years, Monster Hunters 1, G, Dos, and Tri to name some, are coming back online through fan projects, and there are a number of like minded fans playing them right now. Obviously not thousands upon thousands, but there is typically always someone in your HR category to hunt with, and if not then people higher than you are always nice and down to help you.
Also Jakob, you sound kinda insano in this video... This video seems like a fever pipe dream full of rambles that barely connect, throwing blame at diehard World fans and capcom for "ruining" everything... This video is very confusing to me. Ive watched it twice and it just seems like its jumping around alot and throwing blame at everyone that would prefer a game more like world compared to a game more like MH4U or whatever (Which is fair, if capcom released a 3ds game on the PC or PS5 and Xboxwhatever, I would be pretty pissed to be playing a 3ds game on hardware that could definetly support something new.) The concept of a remake that has hundreds of hours of content isnt a smart business decision, when you are releasing a new game right around the corner that also has hundreds of hours of content. Not only from a sales impact but that takes up resources that could make the new game better. (think back to the lack of content we got in Tri because they were tied up with implementing water combat).
The “if you wanted to play these games you already would be” is rich. I don’t have a great gaming PC, but I was playing 4U during the last weeks before it went down, but I’m not a true fan because….
So the gist of the video is "Capcom won't port any old Monster Hunters because they would have to do the bare minimum upgrades", but at the same time they're willing to port something like Monster Hunter Stories, which they've spent quite a lot of effort in upgrading while knowing perfectly well that Stories games sell much less than the main series. Your argumentation in this video is very weak and your view on the subject is incredibly narrow. I especially hate the end's "you don't want a classic game or you'd already be playing it on an emulator". No, there are a thousand reasons why someone wouldn't want to play something on an emulator. Thankfully statements like "you think you want it, but you don't" trend towards being statements that make people saying them later on regret.
While i get your point the last one is kinda ironic. The amount of people that emulate or hunt down the older titles are as much in the minority as us old veterans telling Capcom to give us ports of the games. Not everyone can be bothered to do it and its much easier to just click a few buttons on steam to buy and download those games than it is to find specific emulators and roms for each game and deal with the issues that can arise on a case by case basis. It's also a lot easier to recommend a game if its officially available as much as it is to find randoms who are as new to the games as you are. Not many people are computer savy enought to not fear downloading a virus on accident and what not, so thats another chunk of people not willing to risk it, no matter how idiot proof it is (Modding your 3ds for example). Lets also face it that those games need less work to port over than it is making a new gen game from scratch. Not saying there is no work, just in comparison its less. When we talk about what game to port, just do every one (or rather just the g rank ones to avoid conofusing the players) step by step as part of a classic collection to celebrate the series. While the amount of player who will by those games will not be as high as the new ones, the playerbase will grow much more than the emulated comunities have now, just thanks to ease of access.
"if you really wanted to play these games, you’d already be playing them" have you considered that maybe i would like to play mh4u without dogshit ds camera controls
4U has great camera controls though? Just set up the extra back buttons on a n3ds to look left and right. It's literally better than an analog stick because you can move the camera without ever having to move your fingers from the abyx buttons
That last point is the one that got me. Because yeah, I'm already playing 3U and 4U right now. Not on emulator, but on original hardware. The one old game I can't play on original hardware (because it broke) is MHFU and I got that running with the camera mapped to a right stick, making it much more comfortable to play. Would I buy a port or a collection on Steam? Possibly, because I'm a sucker who's done it before for other series. But I've also not bought rereleases for series far more often because I *had* the originals ready. Besides, we actually kind of had the situation proposed in the video before. MHGU, in the west, released after World and if I remember correctly, I saw exactly the confusion and reception talked about in the video.
This is about right. I think the biggest point is new audience reaction ignorantly thinking the series has downgraded. However I should note, that the reason I personally would like PC ports is because it's easier to get friends in to classic Monster Hunter that way. I switched all my 3DS saves to PC and my Steam Deck now that the servers are down. But I can't expect friends who don't emulate much to set up everything necessary to also do multiplayer. My other thought is the best reason TO do it is just that there's no other Monster Hunter release this year. Generations Ultimate on PC really would do a nice job filling in that gap and then some. I of course would like 4U or 3U, especially 4U but I have no doubt most of the legwork has already been done with the Switch Port of Gen U. On top of that, I can also see the benefit of the fact that it will be real easy for modders to port over missing event content. But on that note, GU without the event content is still too much game so the cope will be easy lol. There is little reason to NOT port GU, that's why I really think your argument that World fans would think it's a regression is the most valid. I can't think of any other reason to not port Gen Ultimate on the year of the 20th anniversary, literally doesn't make sense to not do it otherwise
Not everyone wants to emulate or bother with older hardware. I tried to emulate Tri online and could never get it to work so I gave up and just excepted that I will never experience it again. Its not that I don't want a classic MH experience again. Its that it requires getting back older hardware (my original PSP broke and stopped working in 2010) or jumping through emulation hoops. Like I said not everyone wants to emulate if they can make it work or not. Emulation doesn't help console gamers like myself anyway. So I unfortunately have to except that future MH will get worse an worse and I'll never be able to go back. Sunbreak with Anomaly was not for me. I play on console so modding isn't a thing. Generations Ultimate and Stories 2 are the only MH games I have where I can still hear the classic sounds that make MH to me. Capcom just released Stories 1 an 2 for everything but Xbox (unfortunately) and Stories has less popularity than main MH games. So I think that counters what you say somewhat.
Love your perspective of taking a less biased assessment on ports. As a diehard fan of the series, the perspective is warped in terms of nostalgia and reliving our past experiences. Capcom isn't a fan though, they are a business with stakeholders. While a port would definitely sell units to fans like me, I am a nobody in the grand scheme of Capcom's decisions for the Monster hunter franchise and what to do with the series to invest in its future. One of the few rationales I could see for a port is if they could do it for minimal costs while releasing it during a time frame in which there is a lull in the production cycle of new MH games. I suppose I can allude to MHStories 1 being ported right now given the break between SB and Wilds, however, that's an entirely different case.
It would absolutely make sense to port 4ultimate. It sold well back then and they could easily outsource it. Just HD Resolution + new textures and it would sell 3 Million copies at the very least because all the fans would eat it up. And the 4 wouldn't confuse people as much as Tri.
While I agree with most of the video, I absolutely don’t agree with the whole “if you really want it just emulate it” tangent. There’s tons of people out there who simply aren’t fortunate enough to own strong enough computers to emulate many of these games. Yes many of the games are easy to get your hands on physically, but unless you can emulate them most games hubs your locked out of. Also, the bare minimum I can see Capcom doing for ports would be 3u and 4u. They’d be switch exclusives and they’d simply increase the resolution and change some of the menu ui. I image they’d be on a similar level to HD version of Gen U
And yet 4 Ultimate so desperately deserves to be unshackled from its many limitations that come from being stuck on a crappy Nintendo handheld. It really is a shame.
I lost my 3DS at some point in my most recent move. I'd modded the storage and upgraded to a new 3DS for the c-stick before they got super expensive. Also had all of the old 3DS ambassador program games from my first 3DS cause I was an OG. I only realized I'd lost it when I had a hankering to pick 4U back up recently. I have never mourned the loss of a physical object so much.
Although I do get your argument. Think about it, we basically got weapons that are lost to time that we can't get unless they port it. I know MHGU is still around, yet imagine if World and Rise had Prowlers going forward. The skills aspect of MH got revamped in Gen 5. So imagine what it can do to the skills we can get for our Prowlers. That's my two cents on it. Feel free to scrutinize XD.
You're so right that capcom just wants us to buy the new games. I just bought XX on switch for $40 while Rise+Sunbreak was $25 because of Wilds marketing
"Trust us: you don't want [Classic WoW]." Also, you cover the *Japanese* port history, and then conflate them with the *international* localizations for the rest of the video. It was like, "They actually shut down Generations Ultimate servers already?" No, he's just talking about the Japanese exclusives 98% of the playerbase have never even seen.
Why when someone is saying "Just emulate, bro lol", it always sounds haughty, like they think we're idiots. I just can't hear it like it's a polite suggestion.
I agree with all the logic behind your arguments and I think you're right but if I woke up tomorrow and saw that Capcom dropped MH3 or 3U on Steam with achievements I'd probably lose my shit with happiness. For me it's not just playing the game but showing others how much I love it which is kinda difficult to when my favorite titles are stuck on the 3DS.
Honestly I have the old games and the old hardware and a pc to play them emulated. I would just love to see the things I loved about older titles return. I actually enjoyed underwater fights. If they updated and brought it back in a new game I would be over the moon
i think its one of those realities that most of us are aware its true, but one cant help to entertain the possibility, regardless of whether i agree with all your points or not. thankfully the community is dedicated enough to the point where even without ports you can still experience old gen, even with functioning multiplayer. even if some of the emulators are a hassle to make work * cough * citra * cough *
TBF, Monster Hunters naming convention doesnt make it easy to know what order or generation any one game belongs too if you didnt already commit that information to memory.
i wouldnt put Pc MMORPG on the same level as All of the Monster Hunter Games. i mean for sure they are similar but so much different in every aspect i think its not doing them justice comparing it like that. :0
Yea…. I was hard coped that they would port FU,3G,and 4U as a bundled classic to switch, but this argument makes sense. The image angle wasn’t something I considered bc I’m not in any of the ecosystems where the larger less focused audience resides. I’m still floored by the ignorance and immaturity of the average gamer, but it’s clearly there. This also explains why GU made the cut, bc in reality that is the classic port. Now the only cope I have left is… water is coming back! Underwater combat for the win!!! Great video!
I get porting is nice, I honestly just would like a return of underwater monsters with maybe some revamped underwater combat. Mostly just because I was genuinely afraid of sea monsters in Tri
12:12 I can't see Nerscylla or Dalamadur or Najarala in the 5th gen games. Until they port EVERY monster in 5th gen they can't say they don't need ports. And gunner outfits. And no boring weapon designs (yes, I'm talking about you MHW).
13:43 “There’s a reason why I have a TikTok account” Woof what a day to drop this video huh Being serious though, I agree with most of your points. Monster Hunter is Capcoms hottest selling series right now, and I don’t even really think they’re necessarily wrong not to care in porting these old games. I would love MH4U on Switch more than anything, but trying to justify it outside me and a niche part of the Monster Hunter audience’s gratification is difficult. I don’t think it would sell particularly well, and I honestly don’t think we would have gotten Gen Ultimate in the west after world exploded in popularity if it weren’t for XX existing waiting to be translated. Heck I feel like if I went to the folks in charge of the Monster Hunter team and asked if they would port 4U to the Switch or PC, they would probably just tell me to play Gen Ultimate with guild style. Technically speaking most of the 4U content is there. It’s not the same game because of all the small differences that add up, but I don’t think the casual audience that is inevitably going to be the majority of the install base is going to care about that at all. Someone who doesn’t have the context of having played the previous games might even buy it and feel ripped off because they see it as Gen Ultimate but with less content, and less variety because of the lack of styles and hunter arts. Would they be wrong to think that? Kind of, but I would understand why they would from their perspective. I personally have a lot more hope that the players will preserve these games and find ways to restore content and online play. Another point I want to make about the online aspects of the old games is that would love for the online content to be scaled on the fly like in World and Rise so that they can be played solo. This would not only be good for people like me who prefer to play most games solo, but it would also be a good contingency for if the servers go down, so that people who want to go back to these games in the future if the servers got shut down could still experience most of what’s on offer. I’m always saddened to see parts or even entire games be lost to reliance on online when an alternative would be very possible much of the time. More on the point of me just liking solo play, I’ve been playing Frontier on the fan run server, and while they altered the game in ways that remove a lot of the grind, I still am approaching the part of the game where I’m going to have to start relying on strangers to complete content. The Rasta system helps a lot, but I would love an alternative, because I’m sure as hell not gonna convince even my friends that like Monster Hunter to play Frontier with me. I’m enjoying my experience with that game and how bizarre it is but the fun is also coming with a lot of headaches.
I’m just gonna reply to my own thing because it’s too long and barely related, I just remembered that a couple years ago I was playing GU, and I couldn’t get anyone to help me beat Lao Shan Lung, and I had to seek someone out to get past it because beating him solo at that stage in the game is so unlikely, and I think it sucks that I had to do that to even get to experience the rest of a game that is one of the few that is actually still being supported by Capcom.
Capcom is a master of recycling. Now their games have reached a quality level that you simply can't just reuse, at least not to the extend of the old titles. I personally don't care really about ports. I can play all the games all I want. But the set up on PC is keeping all my friends away who aren't as big MH freaks as me. I also like that Capcom is about the future and present without forgetting past. I'm more excited about the new experiences they gonna bring, instead of clinging and crying about the past. And I have my autistic community to celebrate the oldschool games and yap about them.
I heard someone say that the reason they don't make any remakes is because every time they've tried, they get excited and just end up making a new game instead.
If they'd ever rerelease a version of MHGU or double cross with all the subspecies of the monsters in it or the missing monsters with underwater combat or something I'd be down so bad for it. This never occurred to me and I think it's super unlikely, but now that you planted this thought in my head I'll keep it as a dreamy vision.
I started with World and i ended up playing every gen (all the way to the end of grank everytime, and sometimes beyond) except 1st gen, on original hardware, and i'd still like capcom to port some of the older games. It's one thing to play the game, it's another to start playing a mh game at launch, starting at the same time as everyone else.
Good video! I don't agree with a good chunk of it but overall the thing you are trying to say I do agree with. The part where you showed how people reacted towards rise kinda made me reflect on how I acted towards it. I didn't look down on it as much as some of those comments but I still was not happy with it. I dread a future where MH is catered towards people who only look at the graphics or the platform it is released on and don't actually try out the game to give it a proper try. Also 21:00 is not really the same thing. I played some of these game emulated just to experience them again, such as GenU, or for the first time, such as Frontier. A lot of people have used Yuzu or Citra to play those. Both of which are no longer actively supported thanks to Nintendo. But again emulation and ports aren't really there for the same reasons. From my own circles I know that people want a port to have the game run on modern platforms with better ux. Sure one can call that a remaster but it also seems like a lot of people online want better ux with the port. Also people care about game preservation from official sources. I myself want a MH4U remake. I know it won't happen since a port is not likely to happen either but I truly feel like MH4U, the gold standard for MH games for a lot of people, should be preserved and brought forward so other people can also experience true peak. Agaun good video! Certainly interesting to hear this for...well for me the first time
You're so fucking right and it frustrates me to no end. I will continue to play these old games emulated on private servers in spite of capcom abandoning all these games completely (and still bring them up as if all those people from tiktok know what the fuck a lagiacrus is). But I still really want to be able to ask my friends to play these games without having to do the annoying setup of hunsterverse, just be able to spend 20 bucks on a game like XX rn and just hand it to them and be able to play instantly. It's true, these games will absolutely never sell super well, but I'm still really hoping they realize you can still make a profit on smaller title releases, like the massive amount of other games being remade and remastered on smaller budgets and just beating that original investment. I mean, they absolutely already realize they *can* do it and just decided it isn't enough, but I'm just always going to hold out for the moment they change their mind. I won't stop asking for it, at least.
I feel like watching your videos is like watching neon Genesis Evangelion. It’s great, it’s a fun time, it’s very entertaining but I have absolutely no idea what is going on for half of what I’m consuming LMAO
This is one of your worse takes, I get where you're coming from but your reasoning is all over the place and factually wrong. Sure, a port of a classic game will not pull World/Rise numbers but it doesn't have to, it's a port and it won't be that expensive to produce. Also, if you port something like 4U and give it servers, upscaled textures, scalable UI and support for modern controls/M+KB people will buy it because not everyone wants to deal with emulators. If you built it they will come. Literally the entire reason PC gaming is so healthy right now is because japanese publishers decided to port their old games to PC and saw huge success from it.
It's because it's not. It's a completely unique MMO that uses Dos as its foundation. This video is just full of awful takes, which is par for the course for this channel.
Because that’s what it started as, obviously it quickly blossomed into it’s own completely separate thing but the very first release of frontier (season 1.0) was mostly a dos port, even using the same online town (dundorma)
this video is better than an autism diagnosis lmao. explains why i like your perspective so much. also: as someone currently playing through dos with my girlfriend, i think you're right, we wont get a rerelease, and taking that into consideration my only hope is that the fans never give up, and we get better at maintaining these old games. in an ideal world capcom would give us the tools to perform our own updates to these games, minor tweaks like letting people choose a control scheme. i think the wish people have to see old games rereleased on steam is from seeing the barriers to entry these games have, and wishing they were reduced so more people would fall in love with old monster hunter. im lucky at least to have a large number of close friends who all remember mh tri and 4g fondly, and are eager to replay. i cant remove the barriers, but i can streamline things and guide my friends through setting up the emulators. i think in the end it comes down to the core of monster hunter, which is community. if we want people to play our old classics, we have to be there to help them cross the various barriers. its good at least that most of these games live on. RIP mho.
You do realize game companies release ports of older games all the time, I have no idea what you mean when you say "It'll look weird to realize this old "archaic" game" that's completely normal. Capcom will view it as an easy cheap way to make money while they are making the next mainline game, now that the monster hunter franchise is more popular.
I think the only reason they aren't porting now is because Wilds is so close. I could imagine if they ever have too much downtime between the end of Wilds' G expansion updates and the next game releasing, it might be better to fund a port or port collection while the portable game is given more time (which based on Rise and it's reception, everyone would prefer that TBH)
Capcom releases tons of ports and remakes, so this video feels like it was made by someone that doesn't even pay attention to Capcom outside of Monster Hunter. The argument that Capcom views MH as something similar to a fighting game where often the newest version just replaces the old one is just blatantly wrong because Capcom rereleases old Street Fighter games all the time. Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Capcom Fighting Collection (a collection that includes Red Earth, a game that never even got a home release btw), and Ultra Street Fighter 2 all run counter to what this guy is saying. Old Resident Evil games, old Devil May Cry games, the many Mega Man and Ace Attorney collections, the Ghost Trick port, heck even Monster Hunter Stories 1 just say otherwise to most of what this video says.
On the one hand I agree they want you to buy the newest biggest Monster Hunter game On the other they know people love MH and that "Legacy Collection" style titles sell really well with the megaman legacy collections, beatemup collections, and fighting game collections among others doing pretty well, especially the Mega Man ones, as well as Devil May Cry and Resident Evil ports and remakes
Man, not gonna lie but it will feel good if Capcom throw a bone to us every now and then. It feels good to play Generations Ultimate on a higher resolution and with some graphic upgrades. I am planing to play Freedom Unite and community texture pack is amazing. Imagine playing that or any other later realese like that, some small but reliable servers. Live would be great man. But yeah, at this point it's getting harder and harder to get more ports, I see Generations Ultimate as a love letter to old MH and also a goodbye. Let's see, I will keep my faith for Captom to port older titles.
It's a shitty argument against porting games but he's right somehow. I play FU, everyday. I like it and there is a huge community behind it, you can play online and do pretty much everything. I'll not be against a FU port on Ps4/Ps5 for exemple, but I'll definitely not see any difference when playing. Worse : I'll not be able to play AWESOME mods like "FUComplete" which add every japanese dlc (which couldn't be added into a port) and QoL like being able to change gear in a GH, frontier like HH...
@@auronkardek Not really no. First off, Wanting a port and already playing the Game are not mutually exclusive. You yourself already mentioned how You still would like. A port of Fu. I myself have an original copy of 4u, Fu and emulate them yet i still want a port. Second: "If You wanted to play you'd be playing already" is not fucking true at all. This guy is absolutely ignoring that people are lazy af and any inconvenience no matter how small is a Montain when trying to get someone to try something. It has absolutely nothing to do with "You think You do but You don't" sure, for us who have emulated already all the shit we have to do isnt much. But going up to someone and telling them "hey lets play 4u, all you have to do is download an emulator, track down a rom, make sure it aint encrypted and all other fuzz like that, look for the code to disable the 3d mode... And yadda yadda" can be a huge turn off. People that otherwise would give a fair chance to the Game. About not seeing a differences, yeah FU is straight forward enough to emulate. But what about 4u and 3u? Games tied to systems with gimmicks Will have You still dealing with bs. Emulation isnt the perfect solution this dumbass seems to think it is, i would love to have 4u fullscreen but i can't because it came from a damn console with two screens and i always need to keep the second screen visible. So Even in emulation i still have to deal with the curse of the 3ds'd small af screen. Ultimately ports are not only just a way to get the Game in better hardware, but also make it more convenient. I myself had a hard drive failure recently and Lost all My roms and emulators. I Will have to look again for emulators and at least o can make backups of My physical copies of FU and 4u. But 3u i Will still have to go through the bs of tracking down a rom and man i just wish i could download them from stream.
@@auronkardek No, he's not. first: Already playing the game either through emulation or original hardware is not mutually exclusive with wanting a pc port. second: People wanting to play and not playing already are not because of them not really wanting to play the game. Any inconvinience that someone will encounter when Trying to get them to try something is a mountain. No matter how simple it may be. People are lazy af and emulators are inconvenient as fuck in that regard. People that would otherwise try the games wont because of the hassle, sure FU is straight forward enough. But what about the games tied to gimmicky consoles like 4u?. Finally, you're speaking from the FU emulation pov wich is as i mentiones very straightforward. But what about 4u? emulation turns out is not the great solution this dumbass makes it seem to be. I emulated 4u, i never could have it at full screen as i wanted becase i always needed to have a second screen somewhat readable on screen. Not to mention that i still needed to use the mouse from time to time to interact with it. Yeah, you may not see much difference when playing, but it would also be a matter of convenience. I have both physical copies of FU and 4u and used to emulate FU, 3u and 4u. Recently some months ago i had a hard drive failure and lost everything, so now i have to go through the pain in the ass of looking for emulators, setting emulators up, then tracking down roms (Wich granted i at least could make backups of my physical copies to replace the backups i made and lost with the hdd failure), then setting them up on the emulator and going through the pain in the ass of configuring them and then the controller and man i just wish i could download them off steam and have them ready to play right out of the box. PD: Also, come on people modded new monsters into MHW, it would take some time but if there was a FU pc port i bet you 10 bucks FUComplete would get a version for it
I think the argument at 21:00 about “you don’t want to play these games.
It pretty much fix every single emulation problems
3DS emulation is matured now, to a point you could put in 60 FPS cap cheat code and its 100% fine
Capcom Japan want you to play their latest Monster Hunter games, not old ones
thats why emulation and "piracy" is necessary or we would forever lose these games
No no no.
Emulation IS necessary but piracy is not. Most publishers don’t give a shit if you emulate old games and it’s in fact legal.
Pirating is when you do not pay for a new game and basically steal it. That’s just scummy.
@@juantsu2000 womp womp
Sorry Jakob, you pulled a Blizzard with the 'you don't want the classic games' thing. Remember how btfo'd they got before releasing Wow Classic?

"you don't want this or you'd be playing it already"
Sorry but I think I know what I'd like to spend my money on more than you.
I tracked down a physical copy for my 3ds and also emulate 4u. I still want a pc port
Is there any video showcasing this? I'd be really interested to see it
@@TNB12 I don't have any for the change in bounces, I do have a video that shows off the increased hitlag.

I saw the thumbnail and audibly laughed, that about sums it up
Finished the video. I knew it all already in my soul. You're right.
And I am playing them! I watched while grinding kushala in MHFU on my steam deck
Yeah, it's a bit ridiculous.
(Meant “online” city areas)
I've been messing with dos and G cause the servers are back, and those are the ones that feel the most like MMOs to me (and tri to a lesser extent). It's not major, but they have that vibe.
Completely disagree on "if you'd want classic games you'd be playing them already" part
I AM already going through older titles, but I definitely would love not to have to waste my time and energy tinkering with emulators, would love being able to see if someone in my Steam friend list is playing rn and play with them seamlessly and play with tuned up visuals
Edit:
Furthermore, Capcom absolutely has the resources to dedicate a relatively small team to creating ports of these games, or could outsource the process.
My man is absolutely forgetting that any inconvenience no matter how small, is a mountain to get someone to try something.

Having more games to fill time while MH releases are pretty close together already will just lead to burnout, and might leave newer/casual players with a more negative experience, like you said
Maybe they'll consider it if a game is delayed, like Wilds was according to leaks, but I'm not holding my breath
I mean capcom ported over Devil May Cry 2 and Resident Evil 0 to modern platforms despite the huge amount of problems with those games
8:40 I remember back in the day that news came out that Japan was going to pay per online hunt. It was going to be 1 wii point per hunt. Don't know if in the end they implemented that system
Yeah well counter arguments: Ace Attorney, Megaman and Street Fighter Collections exist
They literally just ported MH Stories 1 and 2 to Ps4 and, correct me if Im wrong, MH Stories is not MHW 2 so they are supposed to be pointless right?
Good Point.
4 ultimate for switch would be such a no-brainer. They should just outsource it. Fans would eat it up. Lots of easy sales.
Don’t forget them putting dmc1-3 on pretty much everything
Less people played stories than 4U and 3U as well. His logic makes no sense
@@Fishy_1998yt pretty sure stories 1 flopped it’s a miracle we even got stories 2
Stories is casual so we can remake that, though.”
The logic doesn’t have to make sense, just as long as it is justified and appeals to suits.

Controllers work on PC, you're just too lazy and can't handle even the slightest inconvenience.
With all due respect. That's not a good mentality to have. I'd rather a game exists despite hardware limitations than not.@@candacefullrv9291

Not kinda, it is trash
Not to mention emulating DS/3DS sucks on a base level by having the two screens, sure emulators let you customize the size and position of each screen as you want but it's such a huge downgrade compared to hardware, but at least MH doesn't do anything too interesting with the second screen
Also while emulating 3DS is kinda easy and they run "well" I see nobody mention how BAD the upscaling and filters 3DS emulators have like jeez learn something from PPSSPP would you, I feel personally attacked when I see some of these antialiasing filters these emulators have.
Yeah. For someone like jakob that emulates a lot I'm surprised he didn't think of why even people that emulate would want a pc port release.
I think a lot of us want ports so that we can play with mouse and keyboard.
like I personally started with monster hunter tri, but now that I've played World and Rise, I find it frustrating to go back to older games, not because of mechanitcs or anything like that, but because I have to go back to playing on controller.

Yes, I know XX, but like he said, it's not saaaaaaame.
Except for the fact that its wrong af but ok
Except world is actually a great Game and is not loved by their graphics alone. You just don't like it, but most people do.
I came around to it because I enjoy how it plays, not just because I'm a smooth brained idiot who only cares about graphics as you seem to put it.
agree mostly, but the point about "you would be emulating or obtaining the games if you actually wanted to play them" misses the mark considerably-
outside of NA regions, it can be pretty difficult to get a hold of old hardware, especially in a functional state, not to mention also trying to track down functioning game copies for reasonable prices,
but then there's the factor of no MP, which for many people MP is a big part of the experience,
then on the emulation side- not every country allows you to emulate, so you could be risking fines in your attempt to obtain roms, - or buy a VPN to do it,
then there's the imperfection of emulation, the moral ambiguity of emulation, etc etc.
@@samuraibeluga3749 "the common population" you mean America? lol
you forget there is an entire planet with different laws, people do get fined for emulation and piracy, hell even in America if you download a ROM many ISPs will fine you for doing something you shouldn't be,
many people are uncomfortable with piracy, regardless of the circumstances, it doesn't matter if you agree or not, that is reality.
the rest of what you said just shows you didn't bother reading what I said anyway, mature your view of the world.
They should just make a collection from the series' birthday and everyone would be happy.
Yea right, if they port any of the games for modern hardware they will be a single game most likely the g versions and it would be a minimum 40 dollar price tag. And we will all buy it…
they surely have to update the textures for a psp game right?
me looking at persona 3 portable: ...sure
(great video btw)
fans do that there are hd textures for mh4u for emulation
@@melodiasrojas8428 they are ai upscaled and ugly as sin
Capcom not porting their older Mh games is a silent admission that the old games are better
Hold on, I can’t play online with my 3ds anymore??? Dang…I never finished 4U, and it’s a bit harder without help.
Pretendo is most likely a solution to that dilemma.
Google it.
Use hombrew to carefully give u a upper hand but still make it a challenge. If not then you gotta wait for pretendo to add the game.
You can still play online if you emulate, check out hunsterverse
"if you really wanted to play these games, you’d already be playing them"
have you considered that maybe i would like to play mh4u without dogshit ds camera controls
4U has great camera controls though? Just set up the extra back buttons on a n3ds to look left and right. It's literally better than an analog stick because you can move the camera without ever having to move your fingers from the abyx buttons
Its always a good day when there is a Jakob video to watch!
Problem being there is that you guys are forgetting the context in wich the reception of GU happened
The context being that it was an HD port of a 3DS game after the big release that was World, right? Or am I missing something else?
Sad video. Yet all of it are on point. Thanks
4u would also have to change up a bit to not rely on 2 screens like it did on the 3ds.
9:09 I will never understand why the English community says "MH TWO DOS", it sounds so ridiculous.
to be fair not everyone does but yeah it is ridiculous
It's honestly only this guy.
"Trust us: you don't want [Classic WoW]."
Also, you cover the *Japanese* port history, and then conflate them with the *international* localizations for the rest of the video.
"Dude, just stop liking the games, then you won't even care that we can't have nice things. lolol" 😒
NGL you sound like a company bootlicker when you say this
I agree with all the logic behind your arguments and I think you're right but if I woke up tomorrow and saw that Capcom dropped MH3 or 3U on Steam with achievements I'd probably lose my shit with happiness.
R.I.P. pre GU Classic MH games.
i wouldnt put Pc MMORPG on the same level as All of the Monster Hunter Games. i mean for sure they are similar but so much different in every aspect i think its not doing them justice comparing it like that. :0
These days, the Monster Hunter community has become exactly like the Assassin's Creed community in so many ways
12:12 I can't see Nerscylla or Dalamadur or Najarala in the 5th gen games. Until they port EVERY monster in 5th gen they can't say they don't need ports. And gunner outfits. And no boring weapon designs (yes, I'm talking about you MHW).
13:43 “There’s a reason why I have a TikTok account”
Woof what a day to drop this video huh
Being serious though, I agree with most of your points.
I dont know, they're going to port MH Stories 1 to steam, just saying... there is hope for a MH classic colletion~
If they do ports they would either do collections or out soure to third parties the work
my face when "two dos" and yet refuses to say "three tri"
You mean "Dōōs"? 😆
It'll happen, we just need to pay them several billion dollars for the privilege of giving them the elevator pitch for it. 👍
The fact that Rise has layered armor of all previous guild women lets me know they still somewhat care
Skyrim: i will expand my reach to all platforms
Monster Hunter: Parkour!
i hope this title ages poorly but i doubt it will at least we will get stories 1
In my conclusion: its the classic Capcom special
I feel like bad Monster Hunter takes is kinda just this guy's whole schtick.
it would be really nice if we get a save port from World to Wilds, even if it just ports your World character to Wilds. ngl that would be sick
I've never heard anyone call Frontier a "Dos port" 💀
It's because it's not. It's a completely unique MMO that uses Dos as its foundation. This video is just full of awful takes, which is par for the course for this channel.
Because that’s what it started as, obviously it quickly blossomed into it’s own completely separate thing but the very first release of frontier (season 1.0) was mostly a dos port, even using the same online town (dundorma)
I was one of the peope6to say that it is indeed a 2 Dos port or remake
imho mh now is not fun and the missed opportunity is dissappointing
Made by niantic. Capcom would never make the garbage decisions and game that niantic made
this video is better than an autism diagnosis lmao. explains why i like your perspective so much.
also: as someone currently playing through dos with my girlfriend, i think you're right, we wont get a rerelease, and taking that into consideration my only hope is that the fans never give up, and we get better at maintaining these old games.
in an ideal world capcom would give us the tools to perform our own updates to these games, minor tweaks like letting people choose a control scheme.
i think the wish people have to see old games rereleased on steam is from seeing the barriers to entry these games have, and wishing they were reduced so more people would fall in love with old monster hunter.
im lucky at least to have a large number of close friends who all remember mh tri and 4g fondly, and are eager to replay.
i cant remove the barriers, but i can streamline things and guide my friends through setting up the emulators.
i think in the end it comes down to the core of monster hunter, which is community. if we want people to play our old classics, we have to be there to help them cross the various barriers.
its good at least that most of these games live on.
On the one hand I agree they want you to buy the newest biggest Monster Hunter game
On the other they know people love MH and that "Legacy Collection" style titles sell really well with the megaman legacy collections, beatemup collections, and fighting game collections among others doing pretty well, especially the Mega Man ones, as well as Devil May Cry and Resident Evil ports and remakes
21:00 wow that's a shitty argument
Dos fanboy/new gen hater in a nutshell.
PD: Also, come on people modded new monsters into MHW, it would take some time but if there was a FU pc port i bet you 10 bucks FUComplete would get a version for it
@@auronkardek I swear i've replied to this like two times wtf where are my answers?
