i can't believe that little money gets you a maxed out c280 in America. Here in germany i got a base model, manual c180 for about the same price and it doesn't have a/c, leather seats, power windows, traction control, cruise control, heated seats, wooden trim and all the other stuff but at least it drives really well
500 bucks for this car? Here in Brazil that car would cost around 10 grand usd at least, if not more. Converting to the minimum salary here that a person earns here, you'll need to work for 40 months saving your whole salary (3.3 years). It is in pretty good shape cosmetically. Does it drive? 500 with no maintenance need? That's almost as free car lmao! enjoy your car, I just bought a C180 1998 with a lot of optionals for a very good price and low mileage (considering where I live)
You got a steal. In the UK you won't ever fine a 280 for that price. The 230 kompressors and 280's fetch good money. The inline 6 is more sought after than the V6 for us though. I have a '98 c180 sport black with black leathers and faux carbon interior and a '98 c43 amg brugundy with two tone black/grey leather interior. Apart from electrical issues caused by water ingress there's not much to go wrong on these cars.
That's literally insane. I would need a second house just to store my cars if I was able to purchase a C280 por 500$. Recently bought a C250 Turbo (in Portugal) and spent around 3000$ on it.

C and E class examples from this era are cheap and available, and surprisingly easy to work on. parts are not hard to find or expensive. that C280 looks phenomenal in the gray metallic - not sure I've even seen one in that color before. what an absolute find for $500! you might want to check valve covers (including the top breather chambers) for leaks, the M112 is notorious for leaky covers. oil pressure port cover on front timing cover is prone to leakage as well but only a $9 fix. also should check and clear the breather port (pinhole inside where the hose mounts to) on the passenger side valve cover chamber and check/replace the breather tubing. might help get rid of that moisture residue under the cap. I highly recommend you jack up the car & disconnect the wiring plug to your transmission, and make sure ATF isn't bleeding into your wiring harness - that will eventually wick its way up to the TCM and fry it. the only 2 problems with the 722.6 automatic are this and the speed sensor built into the conductor plate which wears out after ~100-120k. I can't imagine the car's still on it's original harmonic balancer at 280k+, but if so, that should be visually checked for runout/delamination of the rubber intermediate layer. 1998 was not a great year for M112 harmonic balancers. if your electrical gremlins are seat control related, just know those door panel seat control switches tend to get flaky with age - they can go in reverse, or only one direction, and/or make the headrest go up continuously when moving the seat which eventually burns out the headrest motor, etc. and the (wiring for the) headlight wiper motors can sometimes be the source of electrical issues. wishing you good luck, friendly weather, and open roads ahead with your new ride.
On the M112 engine its because the oil cap is raised up away from the metal engine valve cover so it is cooler and allows oily condensation to form, its more common if the engine is driven short distances often and never really causes an issue. Very common. M112 engine with a blown head gasket is extremely unlikely unless massively overheated.
Had the yellow gunk on my BMW. Yes, it’s due to condensation mixed with oil. Needs to be driven on the highway often to prevent this. Not a big issue unless it freezes like mine did….and detonated the engine.
I use to find this W202 really boarding, but over the time, i like it more und more. It has perfection proportions and i love the design of the c-pillar (like on the W210).
