I did start off with just hanging when I was encountering this problem. Without wasting your hands (and forearms) before/during a workout I tended to practice my hangs at the end of my workout to just tire the last of the small muscles.
Then after a rest day or two you'll find the grip strength does dramatically improve and that will translate to all your bar work.

It is all baby steps too. I found the progressions give the illusions that you can work through each progression in a week or 2 (just because of the frequency which they come out) but the reality is you can end up working on 1 progression for months - which I'm finding with the handstand press and even the muscle up progression. But try the sets - let me know how you go - and do a 'test' day every week or 2 weeks and see if there's any improvement. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Hey again sorry it took so long to reply, I just had a fibre wire installed for my internet :D
What you want is 'volume' or in this case, hang time. So 15sec max is pretty good to start with but try breaking it down into 5x 7sec hangs and do 5 sets or something like that. In the end what you want is a long TOTAL hang time rather than trying to hit your MAX hang time every time you try.

Man, I watched all your videos from the first one to this one. Very good! You are helping me a lot! I feel stronger, more flexible, much more agile!
I continue watching the rest tomorrow, and I hope you keep uploading more and more tips. HOLLOW BODY POSITION is a really good advise! Congrats man!

Sorry for all the messages - I'm not sure if you're finding but if you keep going with the body weight stuff (which is all I do - I don't tend to squat weights because I like to run my dog) you'll naturally get better not just because you're getting stronger but also as you lose weight! I get a bit disheartened because the progress is slow but then I don't have time to work out every single day either :/ Just keep at it.

Hey Carl. (or anybody reading) I wonder if you can help me. I am currently trying to master the kipping pull up as progression for a muscle up. My problem is i am 6"4' and i dont have access to a bar high enough to allow me to hang straight without touching the floor.. My question is can a kip be done efficiently with a bend at the knees? If so, can you explain/demonstrate. Thanks in advanced.

If blisters are a bit of a bane it's better to manage them so you're doing the right thing by not getting them to begin with! :P
I have fingerless gloves, which I was donated, but they only help protect the hand itself but I get blisters where the glove ends on the fingers... Maybe try full finger gloves? Or even hang a towel over the bar, if the bar is textured it will wreak it though so use something cheap :O

I was told there's no easy way, you just need to take a cement pill and harden up :-S Whether that was wrong or not... maybe someone else can comment on that. BUT your hands will eventually harden, I still need gloves for textured bars because of the rubbing which in turn causes the skin to pinch (and blister) but when your GRIP gets stronger your hands will slip less and you will also find you blister less - not just because you have nice callouses either! :P

Ya lets cheat on pull ups and muscle ups yay!!!

Do you think that Oly lifts are "cheating" because they use hip drive and momentum?
Strict and Oly lifts are different actions that take the bar to the same destination using different techniques, and they have different uses. Similarly, kipping pullups are not "cheating strict pullups"; they are a different, dynamic movement which uses hip drive and a "flip" between torso, hip and shoulder flexion (hollow body position) and extension.
If you think that CrossFit people don't do strict pullups you haven't spent much time at an affiliate. Just like we do many variations of overhead presses (barbell strict press, push press, push jerk, jerk, and all of the same with kettlebells and dumbbells) we do both strict and dynamic pullups. They each work on different weaknesses, to help develop a more well-rounded physicality.
If all you're interested in is pure static strength great, but some of us are interested in a balance between static strength and more "athletic" dynamic movements, and that's what these different variations are for.

Also, when you post a video of yourself doing the things Carl does here let us know and we'll all pay more attention to your opinions: th-cam.com/video/Md8nyg2JggA/w-d-xo.html
