      This may be a silly question, I couldn’t find the answer online and just had to know. Is it possible to keep coil springs over your strut, and have the springs mounted on the control arm? What are the pro or cons of doing this?

    So here's the deal Tommy, your videos are AWESOME! Appreciate you taking the time of documenting/narrating your mods. As for the deal, you've convinced me to pick up a '17 F80! Good job dude! I’ve had lowering springs sitting in the box for about 6 months now. I’ve been debating whether or not to install them myself or have a local shop do it. After watching this vid and seeing how straight forward the install is, I might do it! Thanks for the tutorial dude!

    Just a word of advice - the grub screw in the spring perch (front struct - see 27m 13secs) are metal. Swap them out for nylon screws like KW uses or you'll find them impossible to release in a few months. Just 9 months after I installed my BMW HAS kit, I had a full chassis tune and the grub screws were seized requiring drilling a tapping entirely new retainers!

    • @ohgivemeabreakfeller
      @ohgivemeabreakfeller 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy L Garage I’m guessing it’s probably M3 size (the thread size, NOT the car - ha!).
      It doesn’t need to be flush so I’d probably replace with something like these: www.amazon.com/Katosca-Spacers-Assortment-Waterproof-Accessories/dp/B07PPRYX7N
      It doesn’t need to be strong, it’s only to stop the perch from moving with vibration and only then the spring has no load.

      I installed the KW version to keep the EDC and it rides BEAUTIFULLY. Like stock only with a lower center of gravity. I’ve got the Comp. Pkg. 20” wheels and the wheel opening apex is about 1/2” of fender gap. Pretty damn low. Been through 5 different front carbon lips trying to find something that doesn’t get destroyed in Houston city streets. Ended up with a two piece design with an open center and they hug the bumper pretty close. They’ve still made contact on the underside on steep drives, but it’s worth it.

      m3summ is this easier or harder ?

    • @Tonybagadonuts27
      @Tonybagadonuts27 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TommyLGarage I wouldn't say harder, it was more to take apart. For example you gotta pull the back seats, the rear speakers etc. to just get the rear upper bolts off, and they are still a pain. I do all my own work, but I just had RSW - Redline Speed Worx in Greenbrook do it for me. Highly recommend them.

    Awesome video, thanks for doing it. Trying to follow this for a KW HAS install on a F83.
    One thing I noticed though is that for KW HAS the helper springs in the rear go at the bottom and not the top. Not sure if the MP HAS goes on top as shown in the video but KW HAS instruction manual shows the helper springs going at the bottom.
    Also, not sure how you got the eccentric bolt close to the camber alignment you marked with the sharpie. Do you do it before you torque the nut?

    • @TommyLGarage

    Great video 👌. I went with the KW has and am still unsure of how the front spring seat collars are set for height 🤔. I think you lined up the sway bar link hole height.. which makes sense.. but wouldn’t the suspension drop the collar down under load while driving if the collar is not set low as possible anyways ?
    And I went with kw because oem... well those guys designed the awesome keyless crank hub 🤦🏻‍♂️

    So according to the SA at BMW there is some programming involved. I had an independent shop install my MP HAS (saved $2K) so I don't have the programming on mine. I wonder if it makes it better🤔. It would be interesting to get a comparative review between having the programming and not having it.

      It’s the same. I have the adaptive suspension on my Competition Package and installed the KW version to retain the EDC functionality/stock dampers and it’s the same. Follow the instructions especially concerning the location of the front black billet spring perch replacement as it’s supposed to be pressed on to a certain distance from the end of the damper tube and MAKE A VERTICAL MARK in-line with where the sway bar end link mount is BEFORE removing the factory spring perch. If you press the new perch on with the end link mount protrusion at the wrong angle, your end link won’t mount up correctly.

    Great video thank you 🙏🏼. Love watching these to prepare for doing it myself.
    One question for you or anyone else who has done the install .. I’m curious about the sleeve you used to install the kw front perch . Is that a sleeve that comes with the kits to know where to install the perch ? I’m confused as to how far the sleeve can go down usually there’s a positive stop or ring/groove or tab that needs to support the spring so it doesn’t push further down after hitting nasty bumps etc?

    • @TommyLGarage
      @TommyLGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the spring seat (perch) that sits on the shock continues to get pushed by the weight of the car and force of the spring. The shock itself gets thicker towards the bottom so there is no way it can go all the way down.
      And the stock perch is seated in the same way - and it wasn’t sitting on the shock very tight anyways - I was surprised at how easily it came off

    • @5abivt
      @5abivt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy L Garage appreciate the reply !! 🙌🏼 I assumed there had to be a positive stop that prevented too much travel. I was a little confused by using the sleeve you had because I wondered if the kw wasn’t tight at that point (given variance/tolerance of diameter etc) then it would just move further down eventually. Did the instructions have any directions on what height to set them at? Or say to mark and get them to a certain measurement etc? Thx!! 👍🏼👍🏼

      Double Tap Technically yes. But mostly camber will change. The idea here is to wait a week or two until the suspension settles it then get it adjusted to the height I want and then properly corner balance it
