- The US National Weather Service says nearly one half of the population of the United States is under an active heat warning. The west of the country is experiencing record temperatures - with Las Vegas at almost 49 degrees Celsius this week.
And it's been a similar story elsewhere in the world, where experts say climate change is causing heat waves to grow more frequent on practically every continent. The World Health Organization has found that extreme temperatures cause more deaths worldwide than any other weather-related factor.
So with more and more people all over the globe being exposed to sustained heat - we take a closer look at the risks.
For more on this, we talk to our science correspondent Derrick Williams.

41 C° outside, without air conditioning in a small apartment. I'm literally suffocating and burning alive.
We need to normalise the use of handheld umbrellas in the sun.. I have started to use one and it really helps
We must also consider the consequences of extreme temperatures on other species. We are currently in a biodiversity crisis also with many ecosystems beginning to collapse
Save soil, let the land be under greenery. Don’t cut down anymore trees and everyone start growing trees like your life depends on it.
Ever since I was a teenager I didn’t understand why I got so depressed and angry during the summer, I didn’t know heat could actually affect your mental health like that. I thought it was just my personal issue.
Don't forget the animals in the heat..keep them cool and in shade.
health is more important than shareholders
Yeah we're toast.
You must factor in humidity. Wet bulb temperature changes things radically, especially at higher temperatures.
Not having a vehicle and using public transportation for all my needs during 80°+ humidity temps is awful.
Concrete and asphalt make it hotter. I found myself looking for grass, no joke.
I have had to reduce my Prozac as a consequence of Heat, particularly Humidity, as I was struggling to sweat ie to regulate my core temperature
Every year we are facing more extreme weather conditions 😢😢
I hate hot weather so much. One day I WILL move to Iceland.
I live in northern Thailand, it hit 45C last month together with the worst air quality in the world and it has barely dropped below 25C at night. I will not be here next year as the Thai, Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam cant get the farmers to stop burning chaff. Better not talk about plastic waste here either...😮
High of 96 today in Kentucky. Heat makes me very irritable.
Freezing here in Scotland, haven't seen the sun for ah thousand years 😅
30 C° every NIGHT in Athens without aircon.
14 C and slightly rainy, peak summer conditions in Ireland
We need an ice age.
