My prediction for the line: They will build like 500m of it, and then abandon it. At best it will then turn into a regular, circular town, which already kind-of exists in the form of construction pathways and structures around the starting point of the line anyway.
Why th' heck aren't they looking at the ancient, successful methods of building cities in extremely hot climates and applying THOSE ancient techniques, instead? Talk about throwing away one's heritage for cheap trashy "modern" crap and glitter...
8:57 The question isn't who told MBS that they could pull this off? The question is, who's gonna be the unfortunate soul to tell him that it can't be done?
One of the first popular thorium reactor documentaries has a scene where the actual George Lucas walks by in the background as they're doing an interview.
If the line is a wall of mirrors in the desert, anywhere it reflects the light onto will literally melt, organic or inorganic. There are several examples of skyscrapers literally melting cars parked on the opposite side of the street, and it is one of the major concerns of desert solar farms. It would be funny if it melted the sand into glass, which then reflects it back at the walls....
The catch with the melting cars is that the skyscrapers were curved rather than flat. Therefore, they had a focal point where the reflected rays were concentrated--a very bad place to park! This Neom Line is supposed to be flat, so no concentration of the Sun's rays on any spot worse than 2x normal. The problem that really bothers me, is that when the building heats and cools, it will expand and contract. Therefore, it will buckle somewhere (unless they put gaps in it).
MBS watched the Ghost in the Shell anime movie, said to himself "Man, I wish I lived in that city" and then found out they based it off a real city. (Kowloon walled city for those curious)
My studio working on some of these projects and we assumed non if it was meant to be build. What the general public isn’t familiar with is that “paper architecture” is most of what architects do; there’s a competition system for most big projects and 98% of all architects work gets thrown into the scrap bin, and loads of “value engineering.”
"...98% of all architects work gets thrown into the scrap bin,..." Same here in industrial design work. For every car model that comes onto the market there are at least 100 trashed car designs. Not that I care as long as I get paid.
So as a gamer, my window into this was when Mohammad bin Salman Foundation bought a company I was pretty fond of, SNK, and then I got gradually more aware of the other stuff that was part of his Vision 2030 project. The question I have is... what if all this doesn't work? Like, Neom sounds like it's not gonna happen, and if his other attempts to diversify the economy away from oil doesn't really happen... what's next for Saudi Arabia? Maybe that's a bit too pie-in-the-sky to just answer haphazardly in the comment section on a jocular TH-cam video, but if all these massive multi-billion investments just tank because they're wildly implausible dreams that just seem to exist to drain his coffers, what's actually left for Saudi Arabia to pivot to?
Most of the foreign top management working for Neom project are clearly incompetent and receive insanely high compensation. Most will be replaced. The hiring culture in Saudi Arabia is not as heavy on merits as it should be.
There are people who argue that these cities should have no laws at all. "If they agree on slavery, these cities will fail, and therefore no one would want to do such a thing”...sure
On that premise there would be no bad laws or oppression of anyone. It ends up the person who builds the biggest warlord army that they enforce with violence and that can feed at least its people that part of their warlord army controls everything.
So any rag-tag band of wannabe warlord dictators could form a small army and take over the place? Or will they then come crying for help from countries with actual laws and regulations?
A completely private city? Sounds like a nightmare. I'm sure the transit systems will be cheap until all the condos/houses are bought, then they will jack up all the prices because they have you trapped.
The money is literally not an issue. The prince is literally a multi trillionaire. He spent 500 million dollars on a painting, pretty sure he can afford to lose 500 billion on a city. The issue is logistics. That amount of concrete is staggering, the price is no problem, the manpower is.
Neom is one of the stupidest ideas on how to spend capital I’ve ever encountered. It’s amazing how stupid people can be when nobody can question them without being poisoned. Autocracy ladies and gentlemen.

Lmao
Good point 👉
You say it's bad I say it's a good defending system
The catch with the melting cars is that the skyscrapers were curved rather than flat. Therefore, they had a focal point where the reflected rays were concentrated--a very bad place to park! This Neom Line is supposed to be flat, so no concentration of the Sun's rays on any spot worse than 2x normal. The problem that really bothers me, is that when the building heats and cools, it will expand and contract. Therefore, it will buckle somewhere (unless they put gaps in it).
Thank you for saving me the writing.
The buckling problem can be solved with gaps, flexible joints and building during winter.

My studio working on some of these projects and we assumed non if it was meant to be build. What the general public isn’t familiar with is that “paper architecture” is most of what architects do; there’s a competition system for most big projects and 98% of all architects work gets thrown into the scrap bin, and loads of “value engineering.”
What exactly is “paper architecture”? Unbuilt buildings/infrastructure just for show?

These projects are prison and surveillance apparatus.
As is current Saudi arabia.
