  • Here's a quick and dirty video showing the steps in replacing the plugs on a MINI Cooper. The steps are the same for all MINI's from 2002-2006 whether Cooper or Cooper S. This particular MINI is 2002 model.

    That's a pretty nice video. I have two criticisms of your technique, however, which could lead newbies astray. My first comment is regarding when you clean up the coil contacts with steel wool. It would have been better to leave the ignition wires in place over the spark plugs so as to prevent steel wool debris from getting into the plug chambers. My second comment is the use of the ratchet handle to start the plugs. Better to start the plugs with the socket and extension only so you can feel whether the plugs are going in cross-threaded.

    Actually, there's an annotation at 2:06 explaining that the socket is 5/8" (16mm). Thanks for watching.

    This video is very detailed, good job. All good except I
    need to learn about replacing the park plugs on my 2009 R55, Clubman S.
    Any chance you've already got one on video? Or could you make one?
    A big thank you from this humble Mini enthusiast.

    Good video, looks like its pretty simple! Just one thing missing, what size of socket its used?

    If my contacts at 1:50 are really oxidised, can I bring them back with wire wool like this? 2 of them are quite pitted.

    Do you have to buy special tools to do this job or can generic ones work? I'm new to all this. Please tell me the tools you are using too.

    • @minimania
      @minimania  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No - except for maybe a spark plug socket. Putting anti-seize compound on the plug threads is a good idea, too.

  • @nandopando87
    @nandopando87 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you have to unplug the battery first?

    • @minimania
      @minimania  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's always safer to work on any of the electrical parts of a car with the negative battery terminal disconnected. Even if there's no current flowing through the parts you're working on it's always possible to accidentally contact something else that is charged (like a screwdriver against the back of an alternator...yikes!).

  • @conservatorcivilus
    @conservatorcivilus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What's up with the oil AND dielectric grease on the plug threads? A tiny bit of anti-seize compound is adequate. Put the dielectric grease on the wire contacts if anywhere.

    • @minimania
      @minimania  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no dielectric on the threads. When the caption said "on top" it means on the top of the plug where the wire connects.

    • @conservatorcivilus
      @conservatorcivilus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok gotcha, thanks. But I do recommend a little anti-seize on the threads instead of oil - but only on some plugs whose threads have a dull or blackened appearance. Most new plugs have their own anti-seize properties built-in with the metal Zinc or nickel chromate metal plating and so require no anti-seize compound.

      It's called dielectric grease. It's only meant to be used on the inside of the boot or the ceramic portion of the spark plug. It's an insulator to prevent arcing and provides easier removal. It's never meant to be used on the connectors itself. It'll cause increase resistance. Do a search.

    So how is that the mini dealership is quoting me $250 to do this??

      that's fucking ridiculous. This doesn't seem that hard for almost anyone to do. The internet provides so much info on how to do just about everything. That's how I know how to do a lot of different things on a lot of projects and such. I got a 2005 convertible last year and I had to get my car looked at in September. I decided to check out the mini dealership since they built a new one across the street from the last location. They checked it and told me the front passenger strut needed to be replaced and suggested do to both but I only had enough to get one done. They also mentioned that there was a problem with a gasket or something with the power steering. I had my dad pick it up the day after it was done and he said it was sputtering and stalling so he pulled into a parking lot. There was fluid pouring out from underneath. They lent us a 2014 Paceman S (which was a blast to drive) and took mine back. We got a call a few hours later and said there was a leak in the power steering system and claimed it must've been an issue before we brought it in. Not only that, the moron who refilled the power steering fluid tank put the wrong type in. They still charged us for parts but subtracted the labor cost for fixing a problem they most likely caused. I have what's known as an eidetic memory which means I can remember the exact date, time, and events in a particular situation and I KNEW for a fact that my mini hasn't leaked a single drop of any fluid other than water from rain or condensation. An oil change from them is ridiculous too. I also needed an oil change at the time but I had that done at my usual autoshop. I've read articles online that some people had to get their clutch replaced again 6000 miles after it was replaced. My mini has 65k miles on it and it's now showing signs of a slipping clutch. I don't quite know if it is but I'm planning to get an FX200 from clutch masters.

      Yeah, spend $40 in spark plugs and showed my 10yr old how to do it in 20min. Great life leason learned. Only wish I was a better gear head. Lots more to do.

    • @topdog19945
      @topdog19945 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gus Paz yeah there's a lot of maintenance that a lot of people can do on their own with a little time. If you're too busy to have a problem at least diagnosed, don't drive it otherwise you'll end up spending more than you have to. My buddy didn't have time to have his oil changed and continued to drive his 2005 Nissan Altima. Just a few weeks ago his engine blew blue smoke and sounded like a chain was thrown in the engine and he continued to drive it for the rest of the week. He had to get a new engine. His uncle is a mechanic and his buddy owns a junk yard so he spent about $1,000 on a new engine and the installation. I just dropped $1500 to have my clutch replaced and possibly another few hundred dollars for a new flywheel if it can't be resurfaced.

    You might want to edit the whole part abut the old plugs being too hot. The 7's are actually a step colder than stock and are for supercharged coopers.. Nice how to otherwise.
