I remember those growing up in Brazil , my neighbor had a metallic blue 1979 with 6x1 , they have the most legendary amazing sound , to me CBX SuperSport are one of the most amazing engineering on two wheels , back in the days it was decades ahead of its time , I ride Harley-Davidson but my heart is a Honda , you can’t beat the mastery of Honda engineering.

I am old enough to remember when Honda first came out with the CBX 1000 and I remember reading the first test of it in Motorcycle magazine and the writer stated Honda told him their sound Engineers spent untold hours recording the American F4 Phantom during military takeoff from the AFB on Okinawa and their original exhaust system mimicked the F4 almost perfectly but the Honda brass said it sounded too deadly so they were told to tone it down...

@Nathan Tankersley Damn, you sure know how to boost a gent's morale. You made it it sound as if the poor fellow's on his deathbed, lol. Let me remind you that death can come at any time, regardless of one's age...and nobody know's if there's darkness or anything afterwards. Sadly, the only way to know for sure is to kick the bucket, but until then, all one can do is hypothesize.

    When I was young man I bought a new 1979 CB750. I settled for that 750 because I couldn’t afford a CBX1000.
How I wish, I would have waited.
But with the money saved on that 750 I bought a windjammer II, saddlebags and nice full exhaust. Put nearly 50,000 miles on it, until the trans went. Sold it to a kid who built a cafe racer.
A gentlemen in my hometown bought 2 CBXs. One he rode was in red and the one he hide was black. Still has the one black, I’ve been trying to buy it for years now.
Now I ride a CB1100, but I’ve also been eyeballing a Kawasaki Z900RS. Love me the vintage retro Japanese bikes.

Indeed thanks to the high revving engine... V12's are essentially two inline 6 cyllinder like this one put together. your ear and brain are tuned because mid 90's were the last v12 f1 engines, then v10's at the early 00's and so on, and V10s don't sound like this at all.

Man all the shit about using gauges and agonizing over tiny adjustments is rubbish.
Thing is all screws have a known thread pitch. Every turn yields a known distance.
You bottom out the throttle stop screws then slightly turn each screw in so the throttle butterfly isn't the throttle stop but the throttle stop the screw is.
In this way as a poster below says you can bench set them. It really is very accurate.

I owned the first X in Florida and put 126000 on the clock before it was stolen in Orlando. Those of you who brag up other fine makes and Hondas never rode one and never rode one equipped with twin turbos and an air shifter. I crossed the Gandy bridge one night and was clocked at 193 by a wide awake FHP trooper who couldn't come close but recognised me and arrived at my door with a warrant and a wrecker. The fine was 3600.00 and that was 600 more than the bike cost me new

I took motorcycle caravans to Mexico about 1987. All lead-sleds and Beamers. A few Harleys, a '51 Indian, some 750 Hondas, etc. All the Harleys burned the exhaust valves running nova gas. I took a Harley to a motorcycle mechanic in Merida. He had all the Harley parts because he was a Former mechanic for the police Harleys in San Francisco. PD.
He had a CBX with just a few miles on it that had put a rod through the case. He just couldn't get the parts. The bike belonged to a cop who wound it up and dumped the clutch trying to do a wheelie.
Near Mexico D.F there were occasional groups of cafe racers. The sixes, Honda and Kawasaki were in the lead with open pipes,,, followed by Honda 750s,, last came a solitary Triumph..
When they came up on my caravan of Wings, they would slow down to warp one and check out the bikes. After a few minutes, they would crank it back up to warp seven. You should have heard a CBX with open Kerker exhaust going through downtown Quereretaro with all the highwall buildings next to the road.
I also took the bike caravans that crossed on the ferry from La Paz AND, I tied them on to the piggyback train through the Copper Canyon. We derailed twice.

My very first motorcycle engine overhaul was a 1979 CBX engine. The bike had a rod punch a hole in the cases. I found another engine and swapped cases and parts and it ran for about 35,000 miles with few troubles. Getting everything lined up in the 2 case halves was fun. There are 4 cams in it and its possible to set them wrong and fire 2 cylinders at once. Two 3 cylinder engines tied together. It sounded almost normal but the cam chain would break in about 100 miles. You must have gotten your certification years ago.

These were very heavy, stationary. All that went once it was moving. A chap owned one I knew years back and let me have a short ride on it. Once on a long straight road and safe, just tweak the throttle and the front became very light. It could become scary if it had a mind of it`s own.

I worked at Cycle Sport, Tysons Corner VA back in 1982 as a salesman, the lead mechanic had a 1980 or 81 Stock CBX and let me turn the wheels...Gnarly!
David Niess was part owner back in the good-ole-days, Jack Seaver was the previous salesman and he could sell a tricycle to Kenny Roberts !

I can well understand Charlie, as a HD's exhaust note doesn't actually give off an harmonious sound, rather a sound like a blown head gasket. That said it's an awesome bike and an American icon...

I bought a 1981 CBX and she'll be arriving on 3/9/2021 and I can't wait to get her tuned and serviced for the summer months! I do have an 06 vrod that has bigger cams in it with long straight pipes that have her screaming wicked loud, but I can t wait to hear the CBX at red line and the symphony she'll be screaming! No one is going to know what passed them on the open highway! But their after thoughts of Whuuuuuuuuu! Was that? ✌

Friend who use to ride with us in the bay area back in the 70,s had one,he had one arm, other was lost in accident below elbow,he had throttle reversed so you pushed it forward instead of pulling down that way he could use clutch ,and had enough on short arm to use front brake,oh and the short arm was his right,so throttle and clutch was put on the left side and front brake was on right side, also a cousin had one

  • @richardwarner746

I like Steve Fowlers comment about the Cycle Magazine test of the CBX.. I remember it too...the interview with Soichiro Irimijri re the valve train, and the comparison with the KZ 1000. It was brought up that the Kawasaki had a tendency to spit its shims through the cases at high rpms. Soichiro replied, " to see if we had a problem in this area, we put an engine on the dynamometer at WOT, 11,000RPM. There were no problems... a cylinder stud broke after 30 minutes!" At 8500 rpms, fully 1000 rpms below its maximum power output, the CBX makes 6 more horsepower than the KZ 1000. And it's very satisfying to see the car next to you roll their window down, just to hear you go by on the highway! If you have a CBX, keep it. If you can find one, buy it!!!

The first time i heard a CBX 1000 was at a Motorcycle meet with my dad in the late 90's.
I asked something like "Why is there a F1 car here?"
    He laughed.
