I followed this to the letter today. My 14 month old Airedale jumped in on his third attempt and every time after that! Fabulous! Now I just have to keep doing it until he’s really happy before trying to close the hatch 😂
Thanks a MILLION for this!!! I’ve been lifting my Dobie in and out of the car since she was 12 pounds. She’s 40 pounds now and oh my back 😭😭. I had no idea how to train her to go in and out on her own. She’s scared to death and literally just sits until I lift her. I’m trying this tomorrow, THANK YOU!
Love this! Just got a 4.5 month lab retriever mix and he is scared to go inside the car but good when getting out. He is comfy once inside the car. This was helpful. Will start training soon.
One way to think of dog training is to think how long it took us to learn reading and maths. None of us got it first go ,nor will your dog learn first time. Thanks Robert : )
My dog has been in a car since he was 3 months old, and he never had an issue getting in and out...he always associated gettin into the car with either going to petco or the dog park.
I love how much you love your dog[s]. Now a days vitamin N is seen as a 'evil' and I feel old school giving it to my kids/dog but its the best thing we can do for them. Vitamin N, otherwise the word No, sets boundaries for success. Thank you for al your lessons.
Thank you! My 4 mo rottie/corso is getting a bit big to keep lifting, and my whole Pat the seat method wasn’t working (lol who would’ve guessed) now he’s jumping up no problem!
Just thought of another exercise that would create motivation. Setup a "nosework" scenario in the car - ie. hide treats inside the car and have the dog go in and find them.
I have a 6 year old rescue Doberman. He went everywhere with me. I sold my Ford Explorer and got a Chev Tahoe, now he won't go near it. i know he misses going for rides, but just won't go near the Tahoe. What should I try ? I have bought ramps, steps, nothing seems to work.
My dog hates to get in cars. She knows when you try to get her in and she'll stay far away and won't let you approach her. If you try using the collar, she knows how to wiggle her way out no matter how tight we make it.
My GSD is not treat-motivated. No treat is worth jumping for him. I grab the collar slightly and I lead him to the open car, speeding it up a little before the door. He jumps in, because he IS motivated to be in. He loves traveling.
TH-cam doing something new. TH-cam just sent me something to rate your video on a 5 star scale and why. Well of course I gave you the 5 stars and also gave the reason of its educational.
What if my dogs are too small to jump into the car? What do I do? I have been lifting them so their paws are just on the seat but they have to still jump in, should I change that? Thank you, new to your channel, enjoying it a lot, everything makes sense.
My dog gets sick, when we get in the car. She starts to drool, really bad, and then eventually throws up. She had a very bad experience when we brought her home. (it was a long 3 1/2 hour car ride, she did not do well at all) So, we are sitting in the car for 5-10 minutes, in the driveway, with her, with the car running, every day. We sneak in a ride around the block every now and then, but she starts to drool. That is our sign to get her out before she throws up. Are we on the right track, or is something else better. TIA
Helpful tip: a friend of mine’s dog hit the down window button in the car and subsequently fell out the car window resulting in a emergency surgery needed. If your car has a child protect window button you may want to use it for rides in the motor vehicle 🚗.
Shaynutt oh my my, more reasons to lock those window buttons if your car is equipped to do so.... dare I say, this doesn’t happen with manual car windows.
In Australia a law was recently passed that all dogs must be restrained. This is less for the dogs safety then it is for preventing dogs becoming loose objects during a crash but it also prevents this issue.
Very good info about when to start reducing rewards. My dog sometimes will not listen if he thinks there is no treat coming even if he knows exactly what I'm asking him to do
Also, friends and children are good for helping this training- simply have them sit in the middle of the seat and lure your dog, while you motivate the dog to jump up
Random question about the car seat cover is it canvas? and what make please? Im yet to find a good one and Rosie and I go to the beach daily here Down Under :)
My dog won't get in the car till I get in first , than I have to o get back out and close her door . So I need a video on how to get her to shut the passenger door
I really appreciate your videos which would have been very helpful when my goldens were younger(he’s 14 1/2 now and has trouble walking😞 and my other golden succumbed to cancer at the age of 9😢). They are/were great dogs, so well behaved, affectionate and easy to train but now I have a small dog, a 10 lb havadoodle who is 7 months old. I don’t remember my goldens being this difficult to potty train, to stop barking, to be friendly to people, to listen to my commands.... 😖. Are there any different training tips especially for smaller breed dogs? Just wondering because I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do a video with small breed dogs. Thank you for all you do.😊
I’ve re-homed an 8 month Golden Retriever and have a Volvo SUV, I want him to travel in the boot (trunk). I’ve been able to get him in using a ramp initially, then jumping in with the help of cheese….all good for 10 x 15 minute practice sessions over several days with me sitting in the car and praising/treating him. Then took him for a short drive to a 90 minute walk…..got back to the car and he totally refused to jump in so after a calm 30 minutes with me sitting in the trunk and talking to him/with treats I gave up and had to get him into the back seat with some difficulty! Does anyone have any suggestions as I want to be able to take him to the beach and woodland walks? Cambridge UK🇬🇧
Why not teach him to get a short running start? Until he gets too old, a running jump will work better than climbing. My lab only resorted to climbing when he couldn't jump, and when he knew he couldn't jump, he decided to climb. At that point, I didn't have to teach the climb,. He figured it out himself. You have such great explanations for everything, so I'm just curious how you feel about this.
Thanks for the dog training and commands development, it really helps. I have a 6month puppy, every time I put him in the car when I drive he vomit. He does once per trip, what could be the cause
My husky pup was nervous when he went on car rides. Wouldn't relax unless someone was in the back with him. What I did to get rid of that fear was...More car rides until he got use to being in the car. I dnt cuddle fear I teach and show them no harm is present and they are safe. While doing this I made sure my driving wasn't rough and my turns was NOT hard. Took about week of rides and now she loves to get in the car.
My 4 month old rescue puppy had some kind of "car trauma" before I rescued him. Every trip in my car has been positive, once he's in the car he's great but it's getting him in the car. Treats aren't working. I have to pick him up and put him in, he won't budge....I don't baby him, I've been patient but depending on where we are parked, it's actually a danger if he's resisting getting in the car. Any tips?
Jumping down is probably not good for the dog's joints. Humans destroy their joints as well with such high impact things, jumping and running downhill. Squats with weights increase the space between bones and joints don't rub together as much anymore. I'm wondering if you could reduce these problems when the dog does regularly squats with weights.
My new rescue dog (8mo old) will get to the car with no problem. He is terrified of the car ride. Last tome he peed over my back seat cover. A bit of it leaked through on my car seat :( I have to take him today to vet clinic and I hope he won't pee in my car again. I just got him 4 days ago. He is sweet pup. I need help to make car rides not so scary for him. I have two other dogs and he seams to be doing better when they are with him in the car during trips. I just can't take them all to the vet as I would have to leave the other two in the car for the time of vet appointment - I do not want to do that, as my car is not a dog sitter. @RobertCabral Could you help me make him less fearful/stressed during car trips, please?
I don’t own a dog yet but planning to get Belgian Malinois. After watching these videos, I can’t stop watching them all day. As a matter of fact, I will be signing up for the paid membership. Any suggestion of a good breeder in Southern California who breeds Belgian Malinois?
Robert Cabral Thank you very much for getting back with me and appreciate your suggestion. So, if I can put in 90 mins to 2 hours a day to exercise and train BM, do you still suggest not getting BM? I would highly appreciate your reply.
Farrukh Zafar I don’t think it’s as much time as dedication and skill. Try to visit a working dog club and familiarize yourself. It’s a huge endeavor for a first time owner.
Robert Cabral, I really appreciate your honest advice and taking time out of your busy schedule to answer my questions. Would you be able to suggest, what breed of guard dog I should be looking into? Please advice.
I have a 9 month old blue heeler. Anytime we go somewhere with other dogs (Petco, park, etc.) she barks uncontrollably. How do I get her to stop barking and ignore them?
He mentions mozzarella/string cheese here. Though you need to experiment if your dog is picky, try new things until you find something that works and change them out frequently as novelty drives dopamine and dopamine drives habits.
my lab is 3 years old and everytime hes near the car he backs around now and drags me to the garage. ugh so painful to see him like this. i pray this works and i will try this. he use to love it till my husabdm picked him uP and put him in.
1:12 "... cut the cheese..." Haha! Sorry, Robert, I'm basically a child and found that funny. :) Love this video, great for adult shelter dogs like mine that didn't know how to get in and out of the car and also hated the car. He had extreme anxiety, nausea, and didn't understand inertia. Patience was essential. And treats. Now he loves the car and doesn't want to be left at home! I bet a lot of shelter dogs have been dumped and have traumatic associations with said car. If I had started with patience and treats then maybe I wouldn't have had to shampoo my car so much!
I have a shelter dog, 1 1/2 yrs old. Retriever/ lab mix. Scared to death of the car. I really hope this can help. Gus is so afraid of any loud, sudden sounds. Wish I knew his story. 😰
My dog will only get in the car if he has his leash on. I don't need to pull on it at all. Just put it on him and tell him to go in. Guess he needs to feel "dressed up" if he's going out. Lol.
Cheese in this video. I really like the freeze dried liver you can buy in some places, my dog is not treat oriented, it's really hard to get his attention with treats especially outside the home but he would jump through burning hoops to get to liver and its incredible healthy for them, tons of micro nutrients.
How do you teach your dog to not jump on without permission my Dog almost got kidnapped Edit: She ran across the street and jumped in while a kid was getting in and they drove off with her
I name the behavior ( 'up' ) just as the dog starts it. Repeat until the dog is doing it reliably and then start backing it off to 1 in 2 'ups' gets a snack... then 1 in 4, and gradually he will 'up' and you can pet him when you sit at the driver seat...
Robert you say make sure your dog is safe but you don't even tell viewers a dog should always be tethered in vehicles in case you need to suddenly break or have an accident. The rest of the video is great but because you didn't tether the incredible dog you get a 1 out of 10.
The video is to teach your dog to get I to the car. If you watch my videos on how to transport a dog I say use a crate or a Harness. Crash tested of course. Please don’t come on here and cast a judgement biased on one video.

You amaze me every time! My dog has improved her behavior so much thanks to your teaching skills.
👍🏽
Will try this. He does it sometimes by himself.
Great tip. Been struggling with my 3 month old puppy getting her in the car without picking her up and this worked on the first try. 👍🏻
I have crowns and they really are sharp as hell.

This is exactly how I thought my puppy to go in the car. She’s now 5 .5 months and happily gets in without treats!
this video is packing heat

Shaynutt oh my my, more reasons to lock those window buttons if your car is equipped to do so.... dare I say, this doesn’t happen with manual car windows.
Some cars have a central locking button in the door or dashboard which can also be a hazard if the keys are in it 😐
Shaynutt huh, most cars have that kinda protection that you it goes down again if it notices that something is between there
In Australia a law was recently passed that all dogs must be restrained. This is less for the dogs safety then it is for preventing dogs becoming loose objects during a crash but it also prevents this issue.
Sorry to hear that but Dogs should be in a harness anyway when travelling in a car
Very good info about when to start reducing rewards. My dog sometimes will not listen if he thinks there is no treat coming even if he knows exactly what I'm asking him to do
Probably because I tried not rewarding him every time too early

What do you do if your dog is nervous and won't take treats? My rescue greyhound does this in new situations she finds scary.
my dogs are not allowed to go on the sit, so I only buy car with enough space down. for the dogs it is safer to sit down behind the front seats
