How Much Grammar Do I Need To Know For The CELTA?

  • If you are going to teach English as a foreign language, it would make sense to know the grammar of the language when you take a CELTA course. Well, in a way yes and no. In this video, I share how much grammar is needed and what potential CELTA trainees should consider if they have no knowledge of English grammar.
As a start, before commencing the CELTA, I would recommend that you get accustomed to the 12 tenses or verb conjugations of English. This will help you immensely when undertaking the CELTA and will put you in the position where you shouldn't worry about grammar too extensively.
There are also books that you could consider purchasing before you start your CELTA course. These could include the following:
    - "English Grammar in Use": amzn.to/393HfoP
    - "Grammar for English Language Teachers": amzn.to/3omyBse
    - "Practical English Usage": amzn.to/35cHixD
Once you finish the CELTA and should you wish to learn more about grammar or language, English or not, then the following book is highly recommended:
    - "About Language": amzn.to/3nhm2wV
Some final tips of advice. If a (CELTA) student asks you a question about English grammar and you are not sure, then don't try to blab your way through. This will work against you. What is recommended is that you be honest and say to the student that you are not sure of the answer but you could get back to them in the next lesson. Another way of dealing with a difficult grammatical question is to cast it back out to students and enquire if any of the students know the answer to this question. You are demonstrating that students could support each other and not rely upon the teacher all the time and you are also showing that you do not always know the answer and are keen to tell students the case.
Other CELTA books for the course:
    - "Learning Teaching": amzn.to/38hr48v
    - "The Practice of English Language Teaching": amzn.to/3b8wzYV
Don't forget to Like and Subscribe! 😀
    Equipment Used:
    Sony ZV-1: amzn.to/3iWl5cl
    Sony Camera Grip: amzn.to/2WdwKd0
    SD Card 128GB: amzn.to/308CyWe

Thanks for making this video. I'm looking at a career change after 23 years and this is the area I am looking at. Your video's are very helpful and have given me a lot to think about and made me go away and do more research on certain areas. Love to pick your brains.

I knew very little and still got through with it, however, I would strongly recommend commencing with lower level classes otherwise you will have an arduous beginning! And by arduous I mean bloody arduous! Imagine having to teach a B2 class while having no idea what the 'be' verb is? I learnt the hard way via trial and error! So can you do a CELTA with little grammar knowledge? Yes! But make sure you start with an A2 class, ideally!

Thanks again for the lovely content here Martin! I did find that it helped a lot for the pre-course interview referring to Murphy's English Grammar in Use, and IH Dublin also recommended Jim Scrivener's Teaching English Grammar, which offers detailed tips and approaches in teaching grammar in particular.

I am an experienced teacher of over 25yrs including being an English tutor in Singapore. The grammar and lesson planning in CELTA are ridiculously difficult and excessive. I quit the course.
