As I get older,that cold,wet muddy crap has become a bigger turn off than it ever was. Most of my rat,mink & beaver trapping was done on rivers,streams & creeks as well as irrigation ditches, so water levels were a constant changing problem in my area with the fall wet season. Ice up was no guarantee either, water levels still changed below the ice. Had to make sets of certain types & keep things easy to adjust. A lot of work to keep filling traps daily. Rat holes & dens worked better than feed beds or runs. Castor mounds continued to work too no matter what water level. Damn water could go up a foot over night & take 1 -3 days to go down. Lots of sets were too deep. Another trick was to set for front feet to buy some time & still get back feet as water rose ,but if it rose alot it did not matter. Ice is along time coming on moving waters until its thick enough to be safe. Fortunately the streams were faster moving & better walking ,but mostly den or feed hole sets & castor mounds.

You should set all your dog proof traps and see how many raccoons and opossums you can catch in a weekend. Operation save the quail, pheasant and turkey. Do you accept the challenge? Plus it might keep a few out of your beaver traps. 🦫

I set a pan trap in a muskrat bank den once because I was out connibears, in about 2 feet of water. I caught a mink in it.
Those critters don't know how lucky they are. 🙏
I caught 2 muskrats in 330s yesterday. One in a Duke and the other was in a Bridger.
