I have that PS120SE on my computer ✅. But I have a feeling the no SE version is better quality. Unfortunately by the time I upgraded my tower. the standard version is not yet available .
My daughter almost ruined her AMD Ryzen 5 with a 3 fan watercooler by a well known name brand. She learned quickly after a failed water pump, that water-cooling is really best for enthusiasts who want to do a lot of overclocking. Peerless Assassin now adorns her PC. If you need something to cool a CPU for reliable long term gaming use and office/school work without having to worry about failing pumps or leaks, then air cooling is always the way to go.
Just built a new rig with a Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB on a 7800X3D. Very happy with its performance so far. I'll definitely be watching those fans though.
I have no remorse about buying the Peerless Assassin 120. I installed it two weeks ago, and it's working beautifully with my 5800X3D. In FS2020 @ 4K (water-cooled 240mm rad, 3090 Ti FTW) I'm seeing 52°C (CPU) and 62°C (GPU) with a very moderate fan profile. Yes, I did have to move the fan out a bit to clear my RAM. Doesn't seem to make a big enough difference to worry about. Visually? I don't even notice it. Good video. Previously subscribed. Thanks.
I think you should test both intel and AMD CPUs, because of the different hot-spots and potential for offset mounting. On modern CPUs you can't count on the hottest part of the die(s) being under the center of the IHS, so this will naturally favor some coolers on certain CPUs. FS-140 vs FC-140 is an easy example; I wonder if the FS only performs that well on certain intel CPUs and maybe the FC would perform better on AMD, because the heat-pipes cover a larger area or are more directly under the CCDs.
8:12 , fuma 3 is listed twice with different colors? Is the from a different configuration or a typo Also at around 10:12 you mention frost commander and phantom spirit, but the frost spirit becomes highlighted
Great coolers for new builds. I remember when the cooling options for high end CPUs was all AIO water cooling on review after review, now there are air coolers that do the job just as well. In the UK, Amazon (6 Aug 2023) have both the Phantom Spirit and Frost Spirit at the same price. £37.90 (incl 20% tax) that's approx $48 USD. I've not been able to check this in the USA. The PS120 is 4mm shorter and fits a NR200 csae. I think the FS140 will also fit the NR200 but only with the mesh panels. If anyone can confirm this I'd be grateful to know.
I'm not surprised this is somewhat better than the Peerless Assassin, since it matches all the other reviewers. It's still a relief to see it confirmed on LGA1700, since most other testers were on AM4. Thank you for this! The fan thing is a little concerning, hopefully it won't become a major issue over time, but I can trust that your channel will let us know if you notice it. The aesthetic difference is real -- if you need a more refined looking cooler, the Peerless Assassin or Frost Spirit come in non-SE variants that look nicer. BTW: I think Thermalright are clearing out old stock, and new Frost Spirits (the V3?) support LGA1700, but older ones (pre-V3?) didn't, according to some Amazon reviews, so I would say do be careful. One last tiny thing: at 10:15 you said the "Frost Commander" when I think you meant to say "Frost Spirit" which is being highlighted on the graph. (I don't blame you, Thermalright has like a dozen relevant coolers on the market and the naming is kind of all over the place! It's hard to keep them straight myself, and I didn't have to say all their names dozens of times in a row on camera... Thanks again for the videos, the reviews, all the hard work!)
Yeah I got the standard Peerless Assassin over the other models simply for aesthetics. I always hated the look of the copper nubs sticking up out of my old Hyper 212 Evo.
happy that I decided to get one when I saw it after PA review and noticing that it’s cheaper with more heatpipes, felt like too good to be true deal, but it works perfectly
where can i find the list or tables with all the information? I dont mind watching all the vids, but just looking at a chart is far simpler when searching for information
I've recently put this cooler on a 5800x, switched from Thermalright's Macho rev. B (a behemoth of a cooler), and results are great! One thing that imoroved greatly but is not so obvious is my GPU temps. The macho was apparently so big that it was close to my Rx6800xt and it heated it up noticeably, so when I switched to the phantom spirit, my GPU temps dropped by 8-10 degrees!
Oh wow. I have very similar story for mine. I've recently ordered both 5900X as an upgrade from 5600 (need those extra cores for reasons) and I considered switching from Thermalright Macho ABW. I was kinda underwhelmed how this big boy was actually performing (probably an outdated design) and found this gem as a replacement. I also use 6800XT so your build is very similar to mine. Looks my projections about it being significantly better are justified! Out of curiosity, how exactly did temperatures drop from using Macho?
@@manoftherainshorts9075 Well, It either knocks off about 5-7 degrees on the CPU, or maintains the same temps (70 degrees, that being said I removed one exhaust rear fan on my case because of the bearing failing, couldn't yet buy a new one) under load while being noticeably more quiet. Also, the frequency doesn't drop at all. So, overall improvement!
I've had this cooler for a while now, I didn't know it wasn't avaliable in the US markets. Had it over here in the EU/UK for at least 6 months now. Its a great cooler, just wish they would release it in matt black.
Bought PS120 (non-SE) for a new system based in part on this review. 14700k + TR contact frame + stock thermal paste + Fractal Torrent Constant full speed (cooler + case), 10-min Cinebench run, room temp warm (can't measure) 253W maxed at 91C, average
Concern over fan longevity is a pretty minor issue. Just buy new fans and swap them out. At $16-18 CAD for a 3-pack of TR 120mm ARGB fans, it's a pretty simple proposition that still ends up being cheaper than a Noctua D15 cooler.
Replaced my Peerless Assassin with the Phantom Spirit about 2 weeks ago. Never used the stock fans on either; replaced with Silent Wings Pro 4. Idle temps are around 1 - 2 degrees cooler.
How is Noctua being beat on that chart? Also how is deepcool ahead? Most other youtubers have it losing. Also you mislabel the green on the chart. You reference the Frost Spirit as the commander one time?
I wondered how Phamtom Spirit 120 and 120SE are different, and so I compared them by looking into their product page. Although they are almost identical, I've found a slight difference between them other than their top panel. PS120 is 3 mm taller and has 3 more fins than PS120SE if the diagram on each product page is accurate.
@@HardwareCanucks Let me clarify. I didn't count the "top cover" or "top fin" of PS 120. Excluding the top cover or fin, PS120 has three more fins than 120SE. If you literally mean by "top fins" several uppermost fins, then, what you say applies to those of PS120SE as well, so that the very slight difference in cooling mass still seems to exist.
I appreciate the video .. but I'm confused, At 10:55 you seem to be making the point that more heat pipes is better .. mentioning the phantom & frost spirit. But the frost only has 4 and the peerless has 6 .. so I don't get it.
Really impressed by the Frost Spirit 140 results especially considering its price. Should I expect any difference in performance between the normal, black or white version? I'm currently still using my trusted Macho rev B on a 12600kf but looking into upgrading my rig with a 13700k soon.
I like the idea that you can build a 7800X3D/ X670E with this cooler today and maybe in 4 years drop whatever 9000X3D chip in it, still use this cooler (possibly with 2 new fans) and ride into 2030.
Thank you for your detailed review. What exactly is the technical difference between the Phantom Spirit 120 SE and the Phantom Spirit 120 (Non-SE), other than the length being 154mm and 157mm? Are the Copper Base dimensions the same? Looking at the website, it seems like the copper base of the (Phantom Spirit 120 SE) SE version is wider than the (Phantom Spirit 120) Non-SE model. Are the TDP limits the same?
That depends. Thermalright redesigned the heatsink profile to better fit the specs of THEIR fans. I'm sure the Max would benefit if you don't care about noise since it spins at much higher RPM
Just bought a Phantom Spirit 120 for $38. It's friggin' amazing. I think it might even be as good as the NH-D15 in my main computer, which cost three times as much.
I just bought a Peerless Assassin and did not like the high noise, so I returned it and purchased the Phantom Spirit and guess what? I have an annoying tick coming from one fan! I checked to see if anything was touching any fins, but it just appears to be a faulty fan. I put my Arctic cooling P12 fans on instead and this HSF is amazing.
I watch all your air cooler videos even though I do custom loops on me and my wife's systems. Always a great comprehensive comparison! How do these dual tower units run with Ryzen CPUs since those tend to run much lower power than Intel CPUs? Curious how they perform whether it's 1 CCD (60-85W) or 2 CCDs (90-180W).
I ordered the PA120SE ARGB for £30 before watching many reviews - I couldn’t find a non-SE with the ARGB, and the PS120 RGB was 30% more expensive, so I do now feel a lot better about my purchase watching this!
Hey, i want to buy this cooler, but im so confused, some reviews say its really loud, but others say its quiet, since its the most important thing for me. Its hard to understand from the videos and those decibels. My stock cooler amd wraith prism is driving me nuts!
I upgraded my 5950x from the best _RGB_ single-tower cooler (ID Cooling SE-224-XT - NOT XTS) to the best _RGB_ double-tower cooler (Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE) and got an instant 5.1% improvement in cpubenchmark - from 45,200 to 47,500 - no changes required! Hi Mike! Quick important question in these tests. You have fan speed normalized to 38Db. What fan speed RPM is that? Many thanks in advance for the answer!
Excellent review. There is still one more brand new air cooler that just came out: The Cooler Master MA824. It's supposed to be even better than the Phantom Spirit and the Deep Cool Assassin IV. Any chance you could review it?
@@HardwareCanucks The MA624 came out in 2021, if that's what you mean? (I had to look it up). If it really is an old re-used name, Cooler Master are doing some "30th anniversary" marketing stuff lately, so maybe it is a deliberate throwback? Anyway, the MA824 Stealth appears to have just launched in ~July. From other reviews, looks like it's got tied-with-the-top performance, but $99 price tag. So not looking like a value king at that price IMO.
This has me questioning more if I should be a Phantom Spirit or Frost Spirit? I can find the Frost Spirit for almost 10 bucks less so that would be the way to go right?

Retrospective fit is tricky, tight access, ( had to disassemble having installed!l so recommend fit the power cable to the MB first, then the cooler. Dramatic improvement, now XP sits around 60C, very quiet and seems at first look to be more responsive.
I really appreciate the video, I was looking for a cooler for my R9 5900x, and your video has been very helpful. I have a question: can I replace the fans on the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE with something like the ASUS ROG Strix XF120 PWM Fans... Would this help improve the cooling performance?
So how is the fan compatibility from other manufacturers? I have an about 15 year old Noctua NH-C12P cooler and three 15 year old 120mm Noctua (one on the C12P) fans still running like a dream (no noise, CPU max temp 75C on Cinebench, Ryzen 5 5600X overclocked to 4,6Ghz). Noctua sent me for free (to a fairly remote location in Finland) parts to make the C12P fit my AM4 socket in three days. Can any of the newer fans promise to be quiet and fully functional after 15 years? Has any other company even nearly as good customer service as Noctua does? I’m genuinely interested.

Good to hear. I'am considering to buy the phantom spirit for my new 5800x3d. What temperatures do you reach on full load?
@@exebion9506 Between 70-80C when running Cinebench
Thermalright is making quite good CPU coolers and considering the price they are actually great. I got another less known for some budget system a few months back - Burst assassin and it didn't disappoint. Basically silent, compact, well made cooler at great price.
Hiding the fact this is a sponsored review in the last paragraph of the TH-cam video description is a very bad look for Hardware Canucks.
Edit: Hardware Canucks edited their video description into sponsored by Phanteks. Previously it said it was sponsored by the cooler manufacturer.
What a fail :)
I have that PS120SE on my computer ✅. But I have a feeling the no SE version is better quality. Unfortunately by the time I upgraded my tower. the standard version is not yet available .
What model number is the fan that came with yours? Did it come with 2 fans or just 1?
@@T.Lspitz 2 fans included inside the box and is the newest revision fan from Thermalright.
@ksouvenir5561 interesting. Mine came with 1 fan and it looked a little different but still great quality.
Do your fans have the corners cut?
@@T.Lspitz No, round corner. You bought the wrong Phantom Spirit 120 buddy 💡
These fan-cooler reviews are becoming my favorite tech videos, great work as always!
Are you willing to do a test with different fans for the Peerless Assassin? Like Noctua NF-A12, P12 Max, Phanteks T30 , etc
Just built a new rig with a Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB on a 7800X3D. Very happy with its performance so far. I'll definitely be watching those fans though.
Just get two Noctua/be Quiet/Nidec GT fans if you want better performance and reliability. The heatsink itself is good and should last forever.
What model number fan came with yours?
Also did it come with 1 or 2 fans?
temperatures?
Is the from a different configuration or a typo
Also at around 10:12 you mention frost commander and phantom spirit, but the frost spirit becomes highlighted
The fuma 3 will be available in white and black at a later date. But they are in the works.
Did an AI write your video description, or did you outsource them to India or something?
Totally outsourced to India
Would like to know as well!
I would like to know how a Peerless Assassin performs with Noctua NF-P12s since that's what I'd replace them with.
I always hated the look of the copper nubs sticking up out of my old Hyper 212 Evo.
thank you for reviewing more thermalright products 😀
happy that I decided to get one when I saw it after PA review and noticing that it’s cheaper with more heatpipes, felt like too good to be true deal, but it works perfectly
What ever happened to the “frost spirit”? It was an awesome air cooler.
Mike, thanks for the info on the Edifier's.
I bought a pair of the R1280Ts, love them !
where can i find the list or tables with all the information?
@@SuperLeshina so, 5-7 degrees less on CPU and 5-10 degrees less on GPU. Gotcha. Thanks for your answer!
Hi, really enjoyed your video, love your work about CPU air coolers. Could you tell the ram clearance of this cooler? Can't find any info online
U really did become a Brand on testing CPU Coolers... Gr8 work !
Gamers Nexus are far more reliable and go into more depth.
What is the difference between the SE and non-SE versions? Does the SE have slightly fewer fins?
I've had this cooler for a while now, I didn't know it wasn't avaliable in the US markets. Had it over here in the EU/UK for at least 6 months now.
Its a great cooler, just wish they would release it in matt black.
Bought PS120 (non-SE) for a new system based in part on this review.
14700k + TR contact frame + stock thermal paste + Fractal Torrent
Constant full speed (cooler + case), 10-min Cinebench run, room temp warm (can't measure)
253W maxed at 91C, average
Artic P12 Max for case fans, Thermalright PS 120 for CPU cooler and I've got the best value for money combo
I'm assuming the green line for the chart at 8:12 is mislabeled? It's showing The Scythe Fuma 3 as two different lines in that graph.
Concern over fan longevity is a pretty minor issue. Just buy new fans and swap them out. At $16-18 CAD for a 3-pack of TR 120mm ARGB fans, it's a pretty simple proposition that still ends up being cheaper than a Noctua D15 cooler.
When these fail, I would probably buy Arctic Cooling solutions, their Value Pack is very impressive in price to performance department.
Does Thermalright ship new brackets to old customers when new sockets come out like Noctua does?
Did for me for my Le Grand Macho. Had to pay $10 shipping or something.
Replaced my Peerless Assassin with the Phantom Spirit about 2 weeks ago. Never used the stock fans on either; replaced with Silent Wings Pro 4. Idle temps are around 1 - 2 degrees cooler.
How about noise?
It's not worth the upgrade, as the difference isn't much at all.
How is Noctua being beat on that chart? Also how is deepcool ahead? Most other youtubers have it losing.
Also you mislabel the green on the chart. You reference the Frost Spirit as the commander one time?
Because no one cares about testing on modern platforms.
Ok so I installed the cooler to my PC now and holy crap its so much better than the Noctua NH-D15...this little thing is a BEAST!
8:45 maybe get some higher accuracy on those numbers? .5C steps on 15 fans with a total 9.5C delta is kinda rough.
Higher accuracy would be a falsehood since it would fall even further within our margin of error.
@@HardwareCanucks Fair enough
Can you test the Deepcool AS500 plus?
I wondered how Phamtom Spirit 120 and 120SE are different, and so I compared them by looking into their product page. Although they are almost identical, I've found a slight difference between them other than their top panel. PS120 is 3 mm taller and has 3 more fins than PS120SE if the diagram on each product page is accurate.
The top fins are actually decorative and don't contribute to its cooling mass
No, not really. My point has always been that it's the LOCATION rather than the QUANTITY of heatpipes. Hope that makes sense.
the frost spirit has 4 8mm heatpipes while the peerless assassin has 6 6mm heatpipes.
Really impressed by the Frost Spirit 140 results especially considering its price.
Should I expect any difference in performance between the normal, black or white version?
I'm currently still using my trusted Macho rev B on a 12600kf but looking into upgrading my rig with a 13700k soon.
how can frost get higher score with half the heatpipes?
i got the phantom spirit two weeks ago and i went from 70degrees to 40 while idle and 95 to 50 under load.
What cpu
@@megadeth8592 I got the same question, those are interesting results
@@JoaoPedro-ki7ct i5 11600k. the old cooler was the noctua NH-L9i which was doing fine until things started to crash.
My Peerless Assassin Inner Fan started squeaking after 6 months, had to replace it already.
I like the idea that you can build a 7800X3D/ X670E with this cooler today and maybe in 4 years drop whatever 9000X3D chip in it, still use this cooler (possibly with 2 new fans) and ride into 2030.
Thank you for those updated charts and sharing!
Thanks for the recommendation, just ordered it and replacing my NH-D15 :).
I just got the phantom spirit 120 EVO. Wonder how that compares to non-evo
Would the peerless assassin have much change in temps with the arctic p12 max fans on instead?
That depends. Thermalright redesigned the heatsink profile to better fit the specs of THEIR fans. I'm sure the Max would benefit if you don't care about noise since it spins at much higher RPM
@@HardwareCanucksscythe says the exact same thing about the kaze fans on the fuma 2 yet the p12s do lower temps a few degrees.
Just bought a Phantom Spirit 120 for $38. It's friggin' amazing. I think it might even be as good as the NH-D15 in my main computer, which cost three times as much.
having the PA120 is a win, great video
Like i said its a really good and cheap Cooler. Thanks for listen and testing it
its actually cheaper than pearless assassin in my country now. how is the ram clearance looks like for itx motherboard?
How come there is no dedicated review of the Frost Spirit? It seems to be one of your best performers of all time, yet lacks much coverage.
It was in our last roundup. :)
@@HardwareCanucks Thanks I'll go track that down. Appreciate the data driven reviews!
Will the PS perform better than my deepcool AS500 plus? Would it be a worthy upgrade for a 9800X3D?
Yes
I ordered the PA120SE ARGB for £30 before watching many reviews - I couldn’t find a non-SE with the ARGB, and the PS120 RGB was 30% more expensive, so I do now feel a lot better about my purchase watching this!
13:09 you call it frost spirit here. Which kind of highlights your point on oversaturation.
Thanks Hardware Canucks! I'm sold on this great cooler!!
Now I'm curious how much better it could perform versus noise level with some better fans.
@@worldsend69 Noctua isn't the only game in town. You can buy something like the Arctic P12 Max for sometimes less than $10 a fan. They're quiet and one of the better performing fans on the market. You don't have to spend $30+ on a fan.
Hi Mike! Quick important question in these tests. You have fan speed normalized to 38Db. What fan speed RPM is that? Many thanks in advance for the answer!
any opinions on the Spirit normal vs argb?
now that you had it for quite some time, do you know if there is any issues with the fans.?
Been running the Thermalright PS for a few months with a Ryzen 5 5600X. Been amazing, got it for under $40 on amazon.
Excellent review. There is still one more brand new air cooler that just came out: The Cooler Master MA824. It's supposed to be even better than the Phantom Spirit and the Deep Cool Assassin IV. Any chance you could review it?
Wasn't the MA824 released years ago?
@@HardwareCanucks The MA624 came out in 2021, if that's what you mean? (I had to look it up).
If it really is an old re-used name, Cooler Master are doing some "30th anniversary" marketing stuff lately, so maybe it is a deliberate throwback? Anyway, the MA824 Stealth appears to have just launched in ~July.
From other reviews, looks like it's got tied-with-the-top performance, but $99 price tag. So not looking like a value king at that price IMO.
@@MrSmitheroons Yes, more expensive than the Thermalrights, but edging out the Noctua NH-D15 on performance.
The phantom spirit evo is out and looks way better can you do a video with it next?
Yes please
This has me questioning more if I should be a Phantom Spirit or Frost Spirit? I can find the Frost Spirit for almost 10 bucks less so that would be the way to go right?
As for replacing fans no one said Noctua was the only option. ARTIC.
4:25 You're backwards here bud. 4 of 6 heatpipes on the Assassin and 5 of 7 heatpipes on the Phantom touch the CPU core. The Phantom wins here
Got the 120SE. It was 50€. Temps dont go above 70 on a 7800x3d . I wanted to replace with new noctua thats comming out later this year but i dont think im gonna its already super quiet.
Just fitted today on my Ryzen 9 5900x.
XPlane 12 was causing shutdowns on my stock Ryzen cooler @90C.
1. "Whereas the coolers with more heatpipes like the Phantom Spirit, D15, Assassin III, Frost Commander..." The D15 has only 6, the FC 140 has only 5.
2. "That means that Thermalright Frost Spirit gets are Damn Good Value Award." Not Frost Spirit but Phantom Spirit. Of course there are so many of them with similar names that I totally understand this mistake. :)
