  • So Thermalright has launched another Phantom Spirit, this time its the 120 EVO. The only problem is that in a market that's cluttered with the original Phantom Spirit, Peerless Assassin, Frost Spirit and Frost Commander, where does the EVO actually fit in and can the Phantom Spirit 120 EVO offer cooling performance that makes it all that much different?

Thanks for this video! I recently purchased both a Frost Spirit V3 and a Phantom Spirit EVO and was waiting for this review before deciding what to use with my 7950X.
Different Perspective: Couldn’t the Phantom Spirit EVO just be used as a lower noise Phantom Spirit SE if one just limits the RPM of each fan to 1500rpm just like the SE fans are limited to rather than just allowing it to ramp up to 2150RPM? It wouldn’t be higher performing than the SE, but it would be equal performance at a lower noise floor which should be an automatic win.
Seems like the Frost Spirit still wins on the 7950X though.

Interesting testing, especially compared to Tom's Hardware, where the EVO was always ahead at 100% Pushing Power (I guess at a normalized 38db it's a different story in the long run).
What I would love to see, since the TL-C12 Fans seem to be generally good (used on Peerless Assistan, Phantom Spirit, etc). How would the TL-C12Pro compare on the Thermalright Coolers or in general use (Radiator, Case Fan etc), since they are a very very cheap option too, sitting at like 6,50€ vs the TL-C12 for 6€ (or even the TL-G12).
Could that be the best new Budget Option for people, after Arctic P12 being basically the same price nowadays?

I actually bought this one a couple of months ago before all the reviews started rolling in. Good thing too since it seems like it's been unavailable as of late? I was using a Corsair H100i Platinum before but it would get noisy and the RGB on the cpu block was always messed up, like it wouldn't display blues correctly. Since I'm running a 9600K (at 5.2GHz) it doesn't usually have to work very hard so it's been pretty quiet especially compared to the old AIO I had. I plan to upgrade to a newer platform (probably AM5) sometime in the next year hopefully so I just considered this my first piece of a new build lol.

13:50 That's probably the point. I bought this cooler for my 7800x3d and the main reason i wanted this one over the regular PS is the looks. I dont mind the 10€ difference on my country's amazon and i don't mind what's probably a 1 to 2° difference either. I think thermalright was missing a "cooler" looking cooler (ahah) in their line up and this fits the bill while still being a top performer and affordable

with the fan swap comment about pairing the fan to the cooler. I think its mostly the middle / pull fan. The Front only fan should line up more what we would expect. I would say this is because many fans put their blades right up to the edge of the housing, so in pull those blades cross the fin stack making noise. Using A12x25 as an example the blades are inset a little from the front of the housing.
So ya agree with comment you made need fans and fins designed to work together.

did you try the evo fans on the base phantom spirit? the heatsink appears to be identical with the base PS, so either the heatsink is so optimized for the lower quality fans that the better ones doesn't do anything, or the black coating or something on the EVO is making them a less efficient heatsink. I for one, would be shocked if swapping the evo fans onto the base PS doesn't make it perform better than your original testing on it.
of course this is all kind of moot anyways if you are not tightly controlling ambient temps in this testing

Depending on where you look each of these coolers outperforms the other Tom's says EVO, GN says Peerless Assassin, PC Analytics says Phantom Spirit, here they say Phantom Spirit SE. I'm still recommending the Phantom Spirit, its the replacement for the Peerless Assassin and the 120 SE models are the cut down versions. There's even a replacement rumored for the larger Frost Commander coming soon.
