My wife grew up on that mountain. Her family owned a resort that has since burned down called Falling Springs. She lost both her father and sister in separate automobile accidents just below Falling Springs on that highway. Please be careful up there. That highway is gorgeous but has taken so many lives.
My ex husband and I used to go to the off road park before it became a park and had to pay to get in. No regulations, no rules just pure and total fun. This was back in the 80's.
Yes, that's poison oak. "Leaves of three, leave it be!" You can see the leaves in the background are starting to get a reddish hue. They will become more and more red as the season progresses toward end of summer and beginning of fall. PO leaves have smooth edges, whereas holly and some berries have three leaves, but have jagged edges.
That's where I learned to drive and ride motorcycles. The 39 on the mile marker is the highway. The 33.80 is the distance from the beginning of the highway, which I believe is around Huntington Beach.
That white plastic cross on the ground with the lath standing next to it is an aerial photography target for aerial mapping. A land surveyor will establish X-Y-Z coordinates for the center of the cross and the photogrametrist (map maker) will use that information to mathematically orient his work with the ground, property lines, contours and other items of interest. These maps are used for road design and infrastructure projects to arrive at economic solutions for desired improvements. Today, these maps may exist only in digital form on computers to create a virtual reality that details the changes that will be needed. The map represents the before and the design represents the after, and the art is accurately describing the scope of work to be done.
Correct. About to start writing my thesis and I've spent the whole summer mapping out an island off the coast of NC using UAV (part 107 certified) imagery data from our drones. Each point has to be tagged by hand and its the most time consuming thing in the world lol
Didnt see anyone else answer the giant x question yet. Its a aerial survey control point. They locate it with gps as a reference point then after doing the aerial survey they match the x in the photos with the coordinates and can then calculate more info off of it and also correctly orient the photos.
One thing I’ve learned after living a lifetime in mountains is. If there is life growing on the side of the mountain you can climb it without gear. If a plant can get root, so can your foot.
