Hey people. I helped with brainstorming ideas on the outline/script on this one. I fully intend on helping the bro out lots more in the future, too. Hope ya'll enjoy this one.
I think the answer for why these early announcements are done is a lot more boring than we hope; the announcements aren't primarily for the consumers, they're for investors. It's less "hey, get excited, there's a new game coming in 2028!", but the more practical "we're expecting a large surge in profit in 2028, please keep investing in our company until then". People forget, E3 was a trade show aimed mostly at investors (hence, the infamous sales graphs and charts) before it started getting streamed and got trimmed down into a public-focused hype machine.
The Metroid example is an interesting one, considering on the other hand, Metroid Dread only had a 4 month turnaround and Prime Remastered had no turnaround
Prime 4 really got handed the worst cards ever with it being announced early even when only considering the first "2017" version, as it was only said to be “now on development for Nintendo Switch” (they probably had nothing even then !) 1½ year later it gets rebooted from scratch under RetroStudios, and only a year after than the F'in pandemic starts, delaying it even further by at least nearly a year I'd guess ! No wonder it's taken so long ... Hopefully we at the very least SEE _some_ of it this year, otherwise I'll truly get concerned and we'll awkwardly be creeping on the 10th anniversary of the OG 2017 announcement 🤯 😬 🙃 🤬
I mean, I'm even at the point where, since we're _seemingly_ getting "close" to it releasing or at least getting re-revealed, I get affraid to go outside for little things sometimes because I think “What if for x reason I die and I never get to see it after all this ?” Like I'm just trying to stay alive until it releases now, I'd never forgive myself otherwise 😅 I guess the one silver lining in all this is that if Nintendo *hadn't* announced it so early but they still had to reboot it internally behind the scenes then they probably would've just cancelled it definitively without anyone even knowing about its existence.
I think what’s great about how Nintendo are handling this issue is that they seem to be actually learning from games like TOTK and Prime 4 where we have/had to wait EONS for literally crumbs of info about either game. I think a large reason why quite a few people reacted to TOTK release so tepidly is because people were expecting more and more from the game after waiting so long for it. Announcing games like Mario Wonder and just releasing them a few months later not only gets people excited but I think it also helps to keep peoples expectations in check
The Metroid Prime 4 teaser still gets me in a special way. I saw it less about teasing the game itself and moreso securing Nintendo fans trust with a recognizable IP so that the Switch could sell (given that the Wii U has been cited as a commercial failure) Like the same reason why certain console exclusives exist (even if some are timed that’s still an exclusive ownership for a bit), games gotta do the job of selling the console. Once the Switch sold like hotcakes I feel like Retro started to relax a bit… and then go on to remaster Metroid Prime 1 lol
With Prime 4, they had to restart development 5 years ago, almost to the day. There's no confirmation exactly what happened behind closed doors, but popular theory is that another studio (Bandai Namco) was working on Prime 4 when it was announced. Around the same time, Retro Studios was working on a remaster of Prime 1 for Switch to reintroduce fans - new and old - to the world of Metroid Prime. Towards the end of 2018/start of 2019, Nintendo saw the progress Retro had made with MPR, and that its graphics and gameplay outclassed what the original MP4 would have been. Because of the fact that MP4 would have seemed like a downgrade compared to MPR, they decided to reboot development and hand the reigns over to Retro Studios from that point. The evidence to back the above come in two main parts. Years before MPR was revealed, leakers suggested that a remake of Metroid Prime was not only in the works, but completed, and Nintendo was just sitting on it, not releasing it. And when MPR did get revealed, it was released the exact same day on eShop. No marketing build up, just dropped the game as they revealed it. Compare this to Dread, which only just over a year prior had around 5 months of marketing behind it, and was revealed as soon as it was ready pretty much. Prime 4 is definitely an except to the video - it was only announced they were working on it, to give faith to the fans about the franchise (and they revealed a Metroid 2 remake the same day for a sooner release). Imo, considering it's now been 7 years since the original announcement, the way Nintendo has handled it has been excellent. Revealed as a "hey, we're working on this, it's gonna take a while so here's a small remake for you to play in the meantime" and when the delay came, they were upfront and uncharacteristically transparent. Although with 5 years of waiting since it originally got rebooted, a lot of fans have expectations of a re-reveal (and hopefully release) this year. But there's no evidence to suggest it will besides "Well it's been 5 years, feels about right, it must been done soon surely?" Anyway, sorry for the essay :P
@@TJPrime99Retro Studios is a curious company. They take a while to work on games and the results are beyond incredible. Retro Studios working for 5 years on a game means that game is probably going to have incredible amounts of polish and will probably push the Switch to its breaking point. Most importantly, even after the game is released and all is said and done, the developers will still lament how they could've done better. I have high levels of confidence that Metroid prime 4 will be a great game, but I don't think it'll be releasing this year.
Speaking of initial release trailer of games that look drastically different than the final product, remember SMTxFE The game that was announced for Wii U? All they showed was PNG images and a logo, but we wouldn’t know what it is until it’s next trailer and it turned out to be basically Persona Fire Emblem and hardly any of the SMT in it.
Well tbf Nintendo probably didn't anticipate Prime 4 to take this long before the restart and with where Metroid was at in 2017 coming off of Federation Force I can see why they'd want people to know a new Prime game was in the works
They cancelled the original Metroid Prime 4 that was being developed by Bandai and hired Retro Studios to start from scratch again in 2019. Then the pandemic happened.
glad you mentioned the lack of information being presented in these teasers. so many times i'm waiting for a game and i get turned off because the devs keep silent about what's actually in the game up until release. so people buy the game not knowing what they're buying.
*Todd Howard is proud to announce: The Elder Scrolls VI is now.... in pre-development* - 2024 (While also working on Starfield DLC that adds 1,000 more procedurally generated planets) Okay thanks, Todd. I'll be enjoying Half-Life 3, Baten Kaitos 3, Klonoa 3, and Dark Cloud 3, and not to mention, Breath of Fire VII, before that game comes out.
Metroid Prime 4, Shin Megami Tensei V, and Bayonetta 3 were probably all announced very early on because of Nintendo worrying about the success of the Switch at the time, so they announced these big games within the Switch’s 1st year. Nowadays Nintendo doesn’t have to worry as much with the Switch’s success, so they can announce games much closer to their release dates, like the ones you mentioned and others like Xenoblade 3 and Fire Emblem Engage. I’m hoping that they won’t do this with their Switch 2 games within that console’s first year, but they could very well do that if they’re also worried about its success
Or getting sequel revealed a year later. Looking at arkham infamous 1 to 2 Uncharted 1 to 2 Batman arkham Asylum to city. Guardians of the galaxy was the last game to do what you are describing revealed in June and launched in September or October.
This is why the Steam Next Fests are so successful, they provide actual tangible gameplay and aren't games that won't be released until 4 years later. Also these long times from announcement to release probably make leaks worse, after all people become that much more ravenous for info with time.
During the early days of the WiiU, Nintendo announced they were working with Atlus on a crossover project between Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem. They didn't know what the game was going to look like at the time, so they whipped up a concept trailer to try to match the tone of both franchises. When the game finally came out, it was Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
Oddly, I think part of what causes leaks is BECAUSE studios are announcing games 5/6/7 years in advance. Like, a game will get announced, then it'll be 3/4 years of people asking the devs and studio about it just to get absolutely fuck all from them. Then of course people are going to take matters into their own hands and break into their company emails because they just want to know SOMETHING. As a point of clarification, I don't condone stealing data from game studios, I'm just saying, if people don't know something is being made, they don't really have anything to go looking for in the first place.
I can at least excuse Prime 4 being announced early, since Nintendo were transparent enough to come out and say that they were restarting development from scratch. And you don’t really see devs being that up-front about a game’s development nowadays. Like as much as I respect Team Cherry for all their hard work and effort on Hollow Knight despite being a small indie team, it’s basically been radio silence for Silksong ever since its announcement. And of course, the worst example of all is Bethesda announcing Elder Scrolls 6 when they just recently confirmed that just it’s NOW only in pre-production due to developing Starfield all this time. What a huge bruh moment.💀
I kinda had this same feeling with TOTK when it was BOTW 2. For most of 2021 and 2022 I was just not hyped at all because there wasn't really anything to talk about or be hyped for. Then again I also don't think Nintendo foresaw the pandemic and that had a lot to do with it. But I think they're kicking themselves for revealing Prime 4 way too early.
Something that really goes against the argument of beating the leakers is realistically your just putting a massive target on yourself to have leaks happen. You basically tell the leakers “hey if your hacking is or work in another department and are looking for something to leak look for this project”. It also brings credibility to leaks, if someone says “this is footage from (insert game) that leaked” and the game hasn’t been announced it’s more likely to be brushed off as fake or generally ignored however once the game is announced people will be honing in on potential leaks and be more willing to believe them. No one is going to believe a leak for super Mario 128 until Nintendo announces it to be real/in development.
what sucks is that game trailers are not longer for us, they are made for investors and shareholders, thats why we get trailers that overexagerate their promises
This is just like Crysis 4, they revealed they were starting development but haven’t said anything else about it in the last 2 years. Like that game is also probably not coming out for another half decade. Like GODDAMN why reveal it
Super Mario Bros 3 was out in Japan in 1988, revealed in the movie the Wizard in 1989, and released in 1990 in America and 1991 in Europe. So I agree, 2 years seems about right.
I don't see how announcing a game ahead of time will counteract leakers, but one thing that REALLY gets under my skin is how many big name streamers include "THE LEAKS WERE TRUE" in their reaction videos. I find that very disingenuous, and phony in some ways, and it's why I try to avoid leaks when I can.
Are games that were announcing like 5 years ago that I still wait and now... I don't know if I want to play them? If they were release today I didn't go to be hype at all, and I will wait until they were like 50% discount to buy them
I swear if you're gonna announce a game it had better be in a near finished state. If it's not, that doesn't make me want to buy it. All that does is make me hate you and wish you never even said anything about it. No way should anyone be waiting years in between the announcement of anything really and the actual launch date of that product.
There is some important context needed in regard to Metroid Prime 4's early announcement. Coming after the lukewarm reception to Metroid: Other M the next game, Metroid Prime: Federation Force was a spinoff that many misinterpreted as Nintendo abandoning the traditional exploration based gameplay of the franchise. Though the game is quite good (my brother and I still play it together to this day) it bombed with many viewing it as a betrayal. For this reason, Nintendo wanted to show fans that they hadn't abandoned the franchise at that years E3 by announcing Metroid Prime 4 earlier then what they normally would and followed that up with announcing and then showing off a live demonstration of Metroid Samus Returns for 3DS. Nintendo normally doesn't announce anything until they at least have a teaser trailer. All they had for Metroid Prime 4 was a logo.
i still can’t believe the elder scrolls 6 was announced almost 6 years ago and we still know nothing about it other than its name and probably won’t know anything for at least a few more years
The thing is with metroid prime 4, I reckon they were originally planning on it to be released by 2019 and if they had the foresight that development was going to be restarted they wouldn't of ever revealed it
If I had to take a wild guess, maybe they reveal these games to not just interest the public, but mostly investors. They probably think announcing these big budget games based on large IPs will not only draw in potential devs and publicity, but also additional budget from investors who think the game will be a massive hit. Imagine being a stock holder and you see Bethesda announce the sequel to one of the highest selling video games of all time. You’re probably gonna want to invest in that company’s stock when you hear about the game and that gives Bethesda more money right then and there for a low-effort logo reveal.
Naw homie, we're all backing you up on this one. It's pretty ridiculous to make consumers think they're getting a new game in a year or 2, and then do a complete 180 and say it's going to take another 5. Could you imagine if GTA VI was revealed in 2017? The wait would have been agonizing. The only exception I have to this was when Nintendo scrapped the development of Metroid Prime 4, citing their disappointment over the quality not being up to their standards and wanting to start from scratch with Retro Studios. I think that was the right move. The main offender honestly feels like Xbox (more specifically, Bethesda). They have a long track record of announcing games early, and rhen either taking ages to complete it or rushing the development cycle and releasing a buggy mess (I'm not holding my breath for that Indiana Jones game)
A tepid defense of it being used to attract talent instead of making job postings mentioning the IP: While the general consumers may not pay attention to those, journalists watch job listings like hawks. By making job listings mentioning the IP with no coinciding official announcement you're ceding the first impression to the Kotakus and rumer mills of the world, which in the marketing world is called a big blunder.
Again, I have to agree with you. If you make people wait too long, you'll just make them angry. Even if a company wants to go crazy with marketing, two years are more than enough. Making silly deadlines and releasing games unfinished has been really bad recently, how about not announcing a realease date until you're only putting the finishing touches on a game.
To be fair you are not laying off the top talents, i know its harsh but it's capitalism, and now with very unstable economy you want to keep only the best people if you pay them well (and to keep them you have to pay them well). CD Projekt Red, they lack around 30% off workforce, and still do not hire many people who were released by several notable Polish studios. They rather they are singing promising new ones even from abroad (that cost much more, because of their policy of assimilation) or open whole studios abroad (like CD Projekt North America in Boston and Vancouver) to grow.
It's a pet peeve cause they could get investors privately behind closed doors and it's so easy to just not show off anything until they are ready. It's fine that they can take as long as they like to develop a game as it is an extremely difficult and complex process, but showing a CGI trailer that dosen't show anything of substance when the progress is in the pre-production stage is absurd..what's the point. AC Red shows nothing much except someone jumping 😂
I think the "To get ahead of the leakers" is the stupidest reason. You want to know why I didn't care about the release squedule for insomniac? Wolverine is going to come out when I'm in my thirties. There will be so many games and so many events that will happen before that happens that I don't care. Wake me when you need me.
Developers are advertising that they're making a game in a certain series these days to get developers who are fans of the series to come work on the series.
Great topic and video released before the surprise success of Helldivers 2. Now I want someone to make a video about TH-cam gaming rant videos being too long!
I think Capcom proved how to handle these situations. Every big game like DMC5, the REmakes (except the big fumble with 2 lol) or now dragons dogma 2 is announced and gets released within a year of its announcement.
Yeah, Elder Scrolls 6 was announced back in i think 2018? And the game isn't coming out until 2026-2028, and Fallout 5 isn't even in production yet, Fallout 5 won't even be ready until the 2030s or Even the 2040s... When games require disgustingly long periods of time like this, maybe don't announce it yet, or hire more people to help with the workload?
Annoucing a game more than 6 months before it is out and a red flag for me. To many things can go wrong when it is getting to a year or more. It looks more and more an investors annoucement and not a game annoucement.
Haven't watched the video but from the title I have a pretty good idea what it's about. Personally I want companies to be more transparent not less. If you are honestly that annoyed by it maybe just don't watch announcements because this sort of thing isn't meant for people like you. Edit: I watched the video you said basically exactly what I expected you to say.
I thought it was because how pushy these investors can be. But tbh I do get tired about these announcements 4 years plus in advance. He'll like wtf happened to beyond good and evil 2 and prince of persia remake. I also am waiting patiently for stellar blade and pragmata that one looks sick
I listened for about 10 minute more than I should have but...... I like when a game is known for years, you don't care about it, then bomb its a hit. Thats awesome. I think people are getting to overly excited about anything big. Things are also bigger than ever.
this video was crazy because its the first time i thought of DQXII since its announcement which is probably the game i am supposedly the most hyped for rn LOL
I have literally nothing to look forward to on the AAA side. Indies? Yes. AAA? No. I expect the games to be buggy, broken, glitchy, unbalanced, pay to win, riddled with DLC/microtransactions, have some real life drama attached to it, political agendas, Sweet Baby Inc. like writing and etc. Now SEGA recently has been announcing a bunch of games, but I too am not very hopeful about that. U remember waiting for certain franchises, to do something different/fresh, instead of just giving us the same old game, but with a new gimmick. *stares deeply at Mario, most fighting games and GTA series* So I just continue to play the waiting game, while focusing on my own personal goals in life. Your video was spot on and you earned a sub! Don't get burned out and keep the faith!

I’ve followed you on Twitter/X for a minute, and had no clue you had a TH-cam channel. It’s nice to put a name to a voice 😂
Are games that were announcing like 5 years ago that I still wait and now... I don't know if I want to play them? If they were release today I didn't go to be hype at all, and I will wait until they were like 50% discount to buy them
Great video! I agree with you these companies need to stop announcing games that won't be released until like a few years later early
Well they still got Metroid Dread at least...
i still can’t believe the elder scrolls 6 was announced almost 6 years ago and we still know nothing about it other than its name and probably won’t know anything for at least a few more years
Back in the early 2000s games seemed to come out every year.
BOY, I GOT YOU SOME GREAT NEWS ABOUT METROID 4! :D
found out you had a channel because you tweeted 30 minutes ago about people being surprised that you had a channel, yes you SHOULD promote it more
Bro youve had a youtube channel this whole TIME?!?!?
Hey dude! Glad to see you here as well and looking forward to more great discussions videos from you, Happy New Year as well!
The thing is with metroid prime 4, I reckon they were originally planning on it to be released by 2019 and if they had the foresight that development was going to be restarted they wouldn't of ever revealed it
Eight god damn years since a new Digimon Story game was announced and STILL NOTHING REVEALED...
A tepid defense of it being used to attract talent instead of making job postings mentioning the IP:
While the general consumers may not pay attention to those, journalists watch job listings like hawks.
They'll annnouce a game for 2030 i'm calling it
I never get upset about not getting something I was never promised.
I really hate those early announcements they should announce the game when they have somenthing to show
Developers are advertising that they're making a game in a certain series these days to get developers who are fans of the series to come work on the series.
Video - Why live service games don't (and never did) work - waiting for the video...
Looks like 2024 it will be released. I think there will be both Switch and Switch 2 versions.
Things are also bigger than ever.
it should be 6 months or 12 months
this video was crazy because its the first time i thought of DQXII since its announcement which is probably the game i am supposedly the most hyped for rn LOL
sorry won't do it again
2:15 ....who?
Lmao forreal totally fogot they announced it a century ago💀
Its not a loop its a spiral
My reaction to that information.
...High Fi Rush 🤯
kotor remake was canceled. i think the team was laid off?
Did you record this in one take? You repeat yourself a lot.
You kinda sound like Filbert from Rocko’s modern life
Okay
i love your content my man but why in the fuck are you posting 720p videos in 2024? its kinda hilarious. great content.
Crappy internet
@@notoriousbig3k you're uninformed, it only goes up to 720p, I can stream videos in at least 1080p thank you very much
Probably just him having an older capture card
this video is you ranting on everyone except for Nintendo, clear bias
