Wow Jennifer! This was so entertaining and informational to watch! Sometimes I swatch just to relax too. Wouldn’t it be interesting if a company came out with a colored pencils that were designed specifically to perform its best on black paper?!
Hello Jennifer, Steve, and Rose! I just found your channel a few weeks ago and I am loving the content. I love that you work on the content together as husband and wife, you're so fortunate! I also love that little Rose gets to hang out and chill in the craft space. I have my fur babies with me when I'm working now that I've had to work from home. I am fortunate and grateful for that. Thank you for the fun and informative videos!
What a fantastic review. Thank you so much. I learned tons of information. I definitely love the Polychoromos and Prismacolors, Gelly Rolls, and the pastel test was great. I am into zentangle with color so this was a great way to understand what would work with black tiles. Definitely subscribing to your channel.
Thank you for doing this, the colored pencil section was super helpful to me, and I would imagine the other mediums are equally helpful to folks who focus on them, too. What a time and money saver, honestly, this can help an artist make a decision they're on the fence about ;)
Hello! found your channel last week. About 8 years back i was feeling really down in college and i went to the art store n stumbled upon black paper. First time seeing it in a sketch book form, even if i knew it existed. N i fell I loved with it. I tired the pastel pencils with it. Stabilo ones i think and they were amazing! I still get excited to work on black paper. I like how pastels remains vibrant on black paper. Only they fade away if they r not sealed. I was surprised how colour pencils performed on it. Thanks for taking your time to swatch and show us. I now know what to look for when doing art on black paper.
Wow what a collection of products. Was interesting to see how everything looked on black paper. Prismacolors definitely stood out. I really like the pan pastels too. And there were several others that looked great but I have forgotten the names as I was not that familiar with most of them. You have the best videos. I love all the hard work you put in to them. 😀
We are very patient with a lot of perseverance and tenacity for testing so much art materials mediums through out the years, that I am wondering when you have time to do art for yourself! Anyway, even if that I stopped being one of your followers, due to the fact that I couldn’t use anymore crayon bc of my under-tendons of my fingers had been all ruptured in my both hands with rheumatoid arthritis, I have to chose the oil pastels for doing professional artworks which it is easier to hold them (with an holder depending when I am using them like a crayon sometimes) on my papers with different techniques to use them! But, once a while I am coming on your channel to watch yours new comparative tests that you’re performing and yours conclusions which they are interesting always. Keep doing your work the way like it is and keep yourself safe and the people around you in this pandemic situation with all my wishes lucky in your life with health and fate in God! Good working and interesting conclusions always!
They are all very very lovely. I think I would love to see Pablo Mandala’s. I have a few Pablos and combine watercolor with colored pencils so I really go through the pencils. I have the Polychromos and many of the Luminance and Lightfast and Holbein. They are not full sets but I work in between the colors. Sometimes I use drafting film too so the more oil based ones work better on that. But I learned a trick that you might enjoy. I get headaches from oms(odorless mineral spirits) and we don’t have true great blender pens so I use the Caran ‘de ache waterbrush, the one with the fibrous pointy marker tip. To fill them the top unscrews and you syringe up your blender. I use 125 neutral thin cause it causes no headaches. When you screw on the marker tip there are dispenser buttons on the sides. It is the only waterbrush made this way. This wets but not overly wets the tip and you can use the side or the tip to blend. How do you clean it? Just dispense a bit more and wipe on a napkin and cap it. I throw it in my bag and I don’t have to worry about messy thinners or mineral spirits spilling out. The 125 neutral thin blends just like Gamsol but without any smell or sneaking out of the container or oily feel. So I keep 2 handy and the liquid goes so much further with no residue or breathing issues. I would use Zest it but we don’t have it here in the US. I really have been enjoying your tutorials and you work so hard. Your books that you put together for color picking are a fabulous way to learn color theory. I do pastels and charcoal also and got very behind recently with health issues. Thank you for your kindness in sharing what you have learned. I am always happy to share what I have learned and was so relieved about the new blender pen homemade style and that it stays completely intact with no leaking using the marker long tip. And if it works for you it’s your tip too.
Jennifer thanks so much for sharing this. My vote is the Pablos. This is exciting because I love using them on white paper, so knowing how they perform on the black is such a bonus 😍
Definitely the Pablo on black based on what I’m seeing in this video. They come across on screen as the most vibrant of the three for sure. One more reason to cross my fingers for the drawing. I’d love to win these pencils.
I felt that Spectrum Noir metallics had the most depth of color & the most shine on black paper. Surprisingly Crayola metallics which were right below the Spectrum Noir swatches. I love Intense as well (but on white) Thanks for showing us how they look on black. Shockingly as you & Steve said, I’ll stick to white paper. I also was disappointed with Faber Castell Polychromos performance on black paper, so I will stick to white paper. This demo was really great because I like to experiment & always (yes, always) make swatches of all my pencils & w.c. Paints. I also refer to my swatch pages & can’t conceive of not using them & in trios of light, medium, dark. I often make little swatches in strips alongside my painting so I put the other pencils I won’t be using away along with the big swatch sheets. Good job on this one. Very helpful. Jewell
Always remembers all oily products of any kinds aren’t wok well on lack paper due to the transparencies pigmentations, so all waxy base are worked better!
When using chalk products, what do you use as a fixative? I tried workable fixative on the black paper over General’s chalk pastel pencils and it faded out the colors!
You can do it and go watch the colourblist which Jennifer explain very well how to use it (don’t use it directly on your artwork) in one her anterior video or look over it on TH-cam searching video!
Hello. Your video is amazing. I want to ask which brand of pen or paint pen was used to complete all the white writing you use to identify the color pencil swatches. Was it the uni-ball?
I’d like to c U use the Spectrum Noir that you swatched at the beginning of your swatches. I;m going to remind my students to make swatches of their materials. Thanks for all your work on this. I learned a lot. Jewell
I want to make a swatch catalog where Im able to see how my colors would look on black paper well as white without needing separate books. Any suggestions? My idea was to print a bunch of 1' half black and half white circles to swatch on but there has to be an easier way.
I took too long and didn't manage to squeeze my vote into the live chat... (though no surprise since my comments keep lagging behind!) So, I vote the Faber Castell metallic pencils! Or else the Daler Rowney metallic paints (or are they inks??)... whatever they are, those would be good too! Thanks again for another awesome video! :)
You are right but Derwent metallic aren’t look bad on black paper. Meanwhile, Jennifer should use different type of paper which some mediums are working better on them such as Pentel Art oil pastels worked marvellous just like professional oil pastels Artist on Somerset watercolour as exemple!
I didn't expect the Pitt Artist do that, barely ever use mine and usually reach for my alcohol markers instead of them, but toying around with them on black paper seems like a cool idea 🥰
Electric blue is a flouresent in prisma, and neon are always transparent, always turn a black light on your swatches, it'll let you know a lot. Lightfast and otherwise
The reason why some pencils look darker on black than they do on white paper is because not all pencils are equally as opaque. Transparent pigments rely on the white of the paper to show up as the colors that we expect. The binder of colored pencils is clear and there's barely any/no filler in our beloved "artist grade" pencils, so opacity depends entirely on the pigment(s) used. Look into masstone of pigments if you really want to understand the mystery. It's a lot to explain here and you might not even care. Just wanted to shed some light on the subject. :)
My pentel oil pastels look amazing on black paper! I'm quite surprised by their pigment payoff on black as they are budget friendly type/student quality type!
HELP. How do we register for the Pablo Give away? I was very impressed with the Pablos on black paper. Do they perform that well on white paper Jewell.
You wondered why some colours of the Polychromos appear changed. The Midtones here look like darktones because the pigment is more transparent and the black background looks through
I've been struggling. As an amateur artist, I'm wanting to do some projects on black paper....I was considering using my new alcohol markers, but I can't find anywhere if they work on black paper...please help!
Ok I watched this intently because I LOVE BLACK PAPER. BUT the markers I have been using are CHALK MARKERS - several different brands...I prefer Chalkola & Zebra Chalk markers. I have tried several brands of Acrylic PAINT markers - like the ones made for Rock PAINTING.
Brush markers and/or Brush pens; I am curious about brush markers (the sponge tip ones, not the ones that have paint brush tips.) I had the crayola ones, but wasn't very happy with what I got for the money. And somehow I got a set of 5 brush markers by scholar along with a pack of 24 color pencils. I wish someone...(hint hint!) would gather up a bunch of different brush tip pens and brush tip markers and show the variations, like some have a kind of paint brush tip, others have a sponge tip, and then there's double ended ones like the tombows, and the scholar ones only have the brush tip end. and if this sort of thing has been done already I would appreciate youtube title of the videos if any.
I'm sick of seeing everyone just talk about prismacolour and polychromos! What about those who just use budget pencils? How are they on black? You need to cater for everyone!
Posca paint pens are the most overrated art supply..I Don't get the hype there is nothing special about them.. getting a a random brand off Amazon will work the same if not better. The sharpie oil based paint pens are a million times betterment then posca paint pens. I really like those acrylic inks I want to try those
Wow Jennifer! This was so entertaining and informational to watch! Sometimes I swatch just to relax too. Wouldn’t it be interesting if a company came out with a colored pencils that were designed specifically to perform its best on black paper?!
this was do informative thank you and was surprised about the Pablo and happy as I have them. thank you xx
Thank you for this learning video.😊😊
Awesome! Thank you!

nice I've had my black paper sitting in the corner and think its time I take tackle it
Yes it is obvious you did have a good idea how many of the products would do. Your experience is evident and amazing.
What a fantastic review. Thank you so much. I learned tons of information. I definitely love the Polychoromos and Prismacolors, Gelly Rolls, and the pastel test was great. Do you have a review on the Faber Castell Black pencils?
Thank you for doing this, the colored pencil section was super helpful to me, and I would imagine the other mediums are equally helpful to folks who focus on them, too. What a time and money saver, honestly, this can help an artist make a decision they're on the fence about ;)
Wow that butterfly is beautiful
Bravo!!! Excelente trabajo. La información es muy útil. Muchas gracias.

The Faber-Castell Goldfaber pencils are good on black.
I only have one set of colored pencils... but i have a set of oil pastels which look awesome on black paper
Awesome review ! Pablo is my favorite with no doubt. 👍
I'm excited to have that set of Caran Pablo..
Thanks so much for doing all this so I can know what I’m looking for, for my next project. I’m so glad I found your channel!
Would love a flip through of ur art journal!!!!!!! The butterfly is amazing!!!!!

So many to pick from! I'm curious to see how the Pearlescent would work.
Wow, what an abundance of colour ❤️ Some mediums really reacted odd. Thank you for such an in-depth searching. Really enjoyed this!
Looking forward to this!!!

So excited about the giveaway!! Ty for this chance.
I have never tried the creta color but I love the way they look on black.

Prismatic pencils with stickies would be amazing.

Very interesting. Goood to know. Did you try to guess the results before you started?

Prismacolor more startling on black but both good

Alcohol markers are a translucent art medium so they have little to no effect on black paper
Pastels. Have you tried oil pastels?
Will this be on you channel, as I am pretty sure I got on a bit late

👋 what pencils in your experience are the brightest most vividly colored pencils EVER?
Prisma so helpful
But! What about the best black paper? :)
💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜
You guys are so freaking cute I can hardly stand it!
Prismacolour s on Black
Hobby Lobby, then Karitaki
I'm sick of seeing everyone just talk about prismacolour and polychromos! What about those who just use budget pencils? How are they on black? You need to cater for everyone!
