Is Belgium a real country? Some corrections: - I wrote AKK VVK instead of AVV VVK when showing the motto for some bizarre reason, someone kept saying 'ack' in my ear whilst I was writing that so I think that was why 😅 - Photo of Tony Van Dyck later in the video is potentially not actually him - Verdinaso apparently 'wasn't anti-clerical by a long shot', my source for this which appears to be wrong was Jonathan Trigg in 'Hitlers Flemish Lions' and I believe the veterans themselves corrected him when he met them for his next book. Van Severan (leader of Verdinaso) actually wanted to be a Priest when he was younger. Battle of Narva from an Estonian expert viewer I know: 'Video was good, on the Narva fighting though there are some errors. The Flemish lost their positions on Orphanage Hill on the first day not the second as you say in the video, Kausch counter attacked 7 times with infantry from Nordland and Estonian units before he succeeded.' The above I don't believe has been accurately translated into English which was my problem here, Trigg made a bit of a mess of describing the combat on occasion and the other sources were even messier (it seemed to be a very confusing battle).

0:40 One important thing to keep in mind is that Flanders/Belgium was liberated by the Western Allies in 1944. The Netherlands, Denmark and Norway were not. So a lot of the Flemish collaborators who were not in the SS fled to Germany in 1944. The men and teenagers were then enlisted into the Waffen SS. So the high number of Flemish SS are greatly inflated by the very late war influx. For this reason it is better to compare the enlistment figures prior to september 1944.
For years I have read and watched everything available about the events of WW2. Oftentimes I’m left with more questions than answers and so much of common knowledge things made no sense . Many of the things I’ve been lead to believe seemed contrary to the things that I know. Much written and documented about the events of WW2 have been perverted to accommodate war propaganda, and post war geopolitics. It is obvious because of all the missing ,contradictory or illogical themes of the stories about the war. Thank you for sharing all the information you can get. I really enjoy the video content.

Walloons had their own language, destroyed by the French. They are not 'french people'. They merely speak the same language now. I do not have more in common with the Dutch than Walloons. Federalism is the solution. How about we all just get stronger together? We would have to work together anyway, only more divisive than before hindering prosperity. I would not want to be together with the Dutch. We are not the same. Your remarks are an insult to our forefathers who fought against Dutch occupation. Sadly, there's little enthusiasm among the Dutch for a reunification with Flanders. The last time, your northern neighbours were lukewarm, too. The Calvinist bankers were wary of the spendthrift Catholics down south.
2:15 Don't take this wrong but you're committing quite a mistake by confusing linguistic and political divisions in Belgium. TLDR: Walloons ≠ French-speaking Belgians. The Walloons didn't dominate Belgium, they never did. That was the French-speaking bourgeoisie, composed of French-speaking "Walloons" and "Flemings", as well as French and Dutch expats, though that distinction wouldn't be relevant to them, they were all part of the same European elite. As for the actual people, "Walloon" wouldn't even mean anything before an artificial definition of it was crafted by Walloon populists in the 1960's, precisely as a reaction to the Flemish movement. It didn't work... because there's simply no such thing as a Walloon identity. In practice "Walloon" simply means "neither Flemish nor Brusseleir, but rather Flemish or Brusseleir than French". Yet, to this day, some Flemish populists will disingenuously perpetuate the myth of a persecution against the Flemings coming from the Walloons, even though it's been debunked countless times by both Flemish and non-Flemish historians. I'm very much interested in the history of the Flemish SS but I'm afraid you've drank their propaganda and I'm not sure I can trust the rest of the video, considering this is all basic knowledge about Belgium.
yep its just the usual anti Belgium yapper who never who have never set a foot in the country and never spoken to a Belgian irl. Flemish and Walloon are more culturally closer than people think. @@angelmon6 You are wrong, the biggest part of the French speaking people of Flanders were Flemish of origin. In the 19th century, Ghent, was the 2nd most industrialised city of the continent after Paris. It was a city were the biggest part of the elite was Flemish, but speaking French. Or better, the men spoke both Flemish and French, and many women, only knew French.
Thanks for making this comment, I felt inclined to do the same. The video claims to be non-political, which may well be true for an outside observer, but in Belgium the Flemish debate is very much political. Giving false information can be detrimental to an objective historical viewing of these events. The opening statement makes these men victims of an oppression by a minority, however this disregards the fact that the social and political elite in Flanders were French speaking but in no way 'Walloon'. The Flemish question, especially pertaining the right to speak Dutch/Flemish in any official capacity, was also (though not exclusively) a question of social division, not just territorial. Therefore the 'Nieuwe Orde' (New Order) movements were not only nationalist (Flemish independence) but national-socialist (restructuring society along fascist/syndicalist lines). Increasing their victimhood by exaggerated and not properly nuanced claims gives these men more credit than they are due and therefore more liable to be glorified by people who are not as well read into this topic. Let us not forget that these men defended the nazi regime, whatever their other motives may have been. Also the sources used on this video are almost exclusively written by right wing nationalists, which should ring alarm bells with any proper historian. There is plenty of historiography out there that is not written from a nationalist angle (Bruno De Wever, Maurice De Wilde, Frank Seberechts) and could give proper context to the motives of Flemish people fighting for the nazi regime.
How can you say that "Any resentment about German occupation was swiftly replaced by feelings of relieve and gratitude". It was war, how can you imagine the whole population of an occupied country can be happy with this situation ?
I have an idea for you Zoomer, how about you make a video series about the Portuguese Colonial War ( aka Ultramar ) where Portugal fought valiantly to defend it's overseas territories from Black commie militias, UN nagging, American and NATO backstabbing, and Soviet Union/ Chinese sabotage, it would make for a great series and a perfect prologue to the Downfall of Rhodesia and South Africa ( all these events are connected in many different ways )
I'm a proud Flemish citizen, and to add a side note as a reminder that our country not only has 2 but 3 regions including a German spoken part. Needless to say that rulership over our country is rather complex, even so for our 'hopelessly divided' government sadly.
As a Belgian, it saddens me to hear so many misconceptions about my country. The French-speaking elite did indeed rule Belgium in the 19th century and in the first part of the 20th century. However, 'French-speaking' does not equate to 'Walloon.' There were French speakers throughout the country, in both the North - so, also by Flemings! - and the South. French was the language of the elite and was spoken by only a small portion of Belgians at that time. Many Walloons spoke their regional dialect as their first language and were not necessarily fluent in French. This also meant that, like many Flemish soldiers during World War I, ordinary Walloon soldiers often did not understand the commands given by their French-speaking superiors. So stating that the "Walloons dominated every single aspect of goverment, commerce and culture", is overly simplistic and inaccurate. Furthermore, Dutch - and not Flemish - became an official language.
Charles Rogier, one of the co-founders of Belgium, wrote in his book in 1830: “The first principles of good government are based on the exclusive use of language and it is clear that the only language of the Belgians should be French. To achieve this result, it is necessary that all civil and military functions present are entrusted to Walloons and Luxembourgers. In this way, the Flemish are forced to learn French. And we destroy little by little every Germanic element in Belgium.
My greatgrandfather fought in the Belgian army in World War I and was injured in the final offensive in 1918. He was decorated invalide combat veteran and also was part of the armed resistance in Antwerp from 1943 to 1944. My grandfather was forced by the germans (in 1942) to work in germany. He escaped and joined the partisans in eastern europe (possibly poland). My grandfather made it back home and hated the germans after the war. He was a convinced socialist. They were flemish. My wifes greatgrandfather was a mayor for the VNV and supported the germans. He was convicted and served several years in prison for reporting people to the germans who were sent to buchenwald and didn’t come back. that's a blatant lie, Germany invaded Poland which prompted WW2. but so did the soviets, yet we declared war on Germany? despite the fact that Germany was far more willing to work with the western nations? or that Germany was invading German regions that were occupied by states that oppressed them and whose citizens were glad to be under German occupation, opposed to the soviets who were conquering non-Russian regions in order to impose communism onto them, Nazi Germany certainly did bad things, but contorting history in order to make them seem like the only truly malevolent people in all of human history is pure propaganda, Germany had reasons to do everything they did, some may be more valid than others, but all of them more valid than the soviets equivalent's.

An interesting fact: The Volkish movements pre-NSDAP, in particular the Guido von List Society, had little if any influence over the policies of the NSDAP. Only 15 members of the Society joined the Party and the only one of any note, Hermann Wirth, was later banished from the Party. In fact, National Socialism itself, predates the NSDAP. Look up Mazzini from Italy, for example. Furthermore, the Society also had seven Jewish members, one of which was Viennese Rabbi and scholar, Dr. Moritz Althschuler.

Zoomers are showing a promising interest in history and overall I am very pleased with the development of the zoomer generation: I attribute this to the fact that the zoomers were never indoctrinated by mass media and instead allowed for the most part to freely peruse the internet. What has developed is a generation that is genuinely inquisitive, able to find information and critically take in information from a variaty of sources, and able to come to their own conclusions what what they see. This is basically the OPPOSITE of the nefarious boomers, who are now entering their twighlight years and are unable to think critically, and who are so insecure at this point that many of them resort to hiding behind the television for no other reason than to be told that which makes them feel safe and comfortable...
I think this can't be boiled down to generation but rather friends and family, etc. And I think one of the reasons people wake up is not because there is less media indoctrination but instead more school indoctrination, to a point where even kids start questioning it. For example when I was in 12th grade I got a day off from school to march in a fridays for future protest 😂
Hear me out... it may sound controversial... but maybe the invention of the internet, with everyone having access to it had something to do with it. Combined with everyone receiving great education. Don't fool yourself though, you're probably more indoctrinated than you think. Just like those before us you take up information chewed up and taught to you by others. I would argue against our generation being more resistant to indoctrination, us being more inquisitive and critical. We just have more opportunity to be so. Edit: I would agree boomers (more like Gen X has done) has done our generation a lot of harm. They only think about themselves. I may sound like I'm contradicting myself, but Gen X doesn't understand what they are doing. My point being, we are not more immune to such stupidity, it would be foolish to claim so.

Can confirm the treatment to the flemish soldier in the belgian army. My grandfather was promoted sergeant early in the war (by fixing a fleeing major's car). In an early engagement he was ordered to take post in a bell tower during a bombardment, he refused stating that was a death sentence. He was demoted back to corporal and watched the bell tower burst apart with his replacements in it seconds later. In a fit of pique his gun (he was artillery) was posted between two bridges with orders to hold until the ammunition was spent. arriving at his posting he found out he could not even see any of the bridges so he blindly fired all rounds in a field to then retreat for the remaining 10 days of the war. As a pow he spent a day in a barn, to then get taken out for a fotograph, "everybody say heil hitler and you get a beer and can go home". so everybody, who had been parched after a day without a drink promtly did so. he then went home with his rifle, horse, kit and beer. Later those would be confiscated again. He went back to his machine shop and spent the war repairing german motorcycles. About the treatment of the collaborators, being called "black/zwarte" was about the worst insult that generation could give one another, even in the 90's, but only the worst of society would act upon it, and get shunned for it.
Everyone wanted Flanders, we were controlled by the Romans, the Spanish, the Dutch, the French, Germans etc.. Every time we fought back and came out stronger. Proud to be Flemish. @@haukka119 ok I see Note that it is the Flemish who are now overrepresented in finance, higher education and public affairs in Belgium since WWII. It was the Walloons who asked for the division in the 60's due to the perceived idea that Flemish political domination rigged things in their favor, notably their very Thatcherian stance on Walloon coal mines which was perceived as being motivated by "ethnic enmity" or indifference at best (whether it was true or not). Unfortunately the division led to bad socialism/syndicalism in Wallonia.
Wonderful coverage Zoomer, as usual. If you may consider this in the future, would the topic of the N*zis calling slavs subhuman, treating them as such, etc. (Specifically Ukrainians) be something that you would be willing to talk about? All the information and secondary sources that point towards the idea of horrible treatments the slavs endured because of the N*zis look shocking, but in reality isn’t that surprising. Although, there is some indirect evidence, provided to prove that H*tler regarded these people as subhuman, and inferior, still stirs some unclarity if this is all true or propaganda? The conclusion brought by the masses keeps circling that “H*tler believed Slavs to be slightly above the J*ws, Gypsies and other minorities, but it was still not enough to classify them on the same level as Aryans or deserving of the Aryan Honorary pass because of their “culture, ethnicity, history, traditions, etc””. And I’m looking forward to putting that claim to the test to see if it’s true. Apologize for the long comment, I felt that further expansion on my thoughts felt necessary to include.
I live in a Flemish village that they use to call 'small Berlin" because of all the collaborators. The sentiment of what i get of why people joined the Waffe SS is that they where pro church and willing to die for it as they where afraid of becoming Communist. A lot of priests during the war rallied young man to fight in Stalingrad. I think the heavy conservatist roots of the Flemish and the rallying of the Church made it so those numbers are one of the highest.
Fun fact: The province Limburg used to be called Loon, which comes from Borgloon, a city together with Hasselt that took control over the region in the 11th century. In 1815, the province was called Limburg named after a city in Wallonia not in the region. Learning this pissed me off.
There was initially not one single Flemish SS: it started as the Allgemeine SS Flandern and the Flemisch Legion. The Allgemeine SS Flandern was national-socialist from its beginnings, while the Flemish Legion was not. For example: in the Flemish Legion there was resistance to pledge loyalty to Hitler

One question, how big is the spanish ancestry in Belgium and between the flemish people? I read that some spanish nobles stablish there in the 80 years war period and before in the XV century.
Apart from a few Spanish-derived last names, you won't see much evidence of that in the people of Flanders (the Flemish don't looks particularly admixed with Southern European heritage). Nobles were probably particularly few and didn't mix much. More importantly, most of the armies in the 80 years war were actually mercenaries, e.g. German and Scottish.
It should be noted that northern Spanish and much of the Spanish nobility are predominantly Germanic in origin and thus don't look all that different to other Germanic people's, you'd have to do a dna test and even that would be of constrained worth as they go by distinguishing genetics, it is for instant very difficult to tell were an Englishman got his Latin, Celtic and Germanic/Scandinavian genetics from because that is the essential mix of all the people's surrounding him across his history, he could be essentially Norman with Breton influence or a Scot descended from a clan founded by a knight from Flanders, or he could just be from Cornwall, and yet have near exactly the same mixture on the test.
I don't think it's that large. Never noticed at least. Fun fact: one of the capitals of Bolivia is named after the noble Sucre family with roots in Flanders. Antonio José de Sucre served as a General under Simon Bolivar (the whole country named after him 😮).
As a Belgian (Flemish) I want to say that the whole part of Belgium not existing is BS. Although there are inherent differences between walloon and flemish people, there is still a large shared culture, going back centuries before belgium even existed as a nation. On top of that, apart from some old people who still remember the times when the flemish were still opressed, the only people who still care about flemish independence are far right and neo***i groups and people. edit: after watching the rest of your video I must conclude that it did not get better. I admire your research and appreciate the narrative from the viewpoint of the Flemish, but this goes to far, to a point where it almost seems like you are biased towards them and are rooting for them. The idea of "Noble Europeans fighting against hordes of barbaric Bolsheviks" sounds like it came straight from a nazi propaganda manual.
Don't sweat it mate. It's only the Brits who seem to obsess about the notion that Belgium somehow isn't a country. Very ironic, they should maybe better ask the Welsh, Scottish, Irish and Norther Irish what they think THEIR country is 😄
Not sure what to think about the neon*zi statement. Quite the bend to make and a vast generalised statement. Doesn’t mean that Flanders has one party, that it can only be far right nationalist nazi baby eaters. It’s just an untrue statement. He is listing a viewpoint which you don’t have to agree with. Just there to give insight into the situation. He’s never stating his personal political opinion. “Nazi propaganda”, they sure as hell did use it for their propaganda and communists sure as hell created a lot of poverty, despair and death. It’s not mere propaganda. It’s also based on a truth. Understanding something and agreeing with something are two different things.

Show me primary documents to prove this. On H and WW2 there is way too much hot air passing for truth.

@peabase bs 70% of Dutch are pro. Flemings only 35%. That´s why you start with a confederatie. After 3 generations or so we can become one nation
But mind that in the country side the walloon identity is really strong but its more about the rural identity and the folklore.

Idd dit is gelijk een politieke pamphlet vertaald naar het Engels ofzo. Er zitten zeker waarheden in de story maar ook grote fouten.

Yes indeed, this video reeks of misinformation and bias.

“The first principles of good government are based on the exclusive use of

To achieve this result, it is necessary that all civil and military functions present
are entrusted to Walloons and Luxembourgers. In this way, the Flemish are forced to learn French. And we destroy little by little every Germanic element in Belgium.

My point being, we are not more immune to such stupidity, it would be foolish to claim so.

no its because its the first generation born into the bad times, who matured during the bad times, and therefore know nothing more than that things can absolutely get worse and are seeing it unfold. every other generation can look back at how good their childhool was, or how things might have been better in one way or another in the past.
The Wallonians joined the SS as well ,
Can confirm the treatment to the flemish soldier in the belgian army.

Flemish vs Walloon relations is oddly similar to Finnish vs Fennoswede relations of the period, ethnic vs state nationalism

@@tchek1980 The Swedish-speakers were dominant or at least over-represented in all aspects of Finnish society at the time, in the officer corps, in finance, in higher education and public affairs just like the Francophones in Belgium. Unlike the Flemings in Belgium however, the "Genuine Finns" or Finnish-speaking nationalists did not want to break the state apart but simply reform the state from a bilingual dual Swedish-Finnish republic into a Finnish nation-state were the Swedish language would be reduced to the status of a minority language (even to this day Swedish is fully co-official alongside Finnish), to turn the army, the state university and other institutions monolingually Finnish. To counteract the growing Finnish ethno-nationalist movement the Swedish-speakers appealed to a "language peace" platform and a state-based civic nationalism to retain their ethno-linguistic priveleges much like the Francophones in Belgium did by appealing to a Belgian identity.
@@haukka119 ok I see
Note that it is the Flemish who are now overrepresented in finance, higher education and public affairs in Belgium since WWII.
Yes great suggestion!
Where did you get the picture at 24:36. That is extremely fascinating to see the Belfort like that.
As a Flemish nationalist, I approve of this message. Sadly, not much has changed since the war.

Many Flemish people are recognised as Righteous Among the Nations. This means that many Flemish were against the German occupation. Many Flemish people were in the resistance movements. You : "The Germans troops were ordered to behave in a exemplary manner and they did so". How can you believe that in a war all soldiers behave in a exemplary manner ? Is the arresting of the Jews, political opponents etc exemples of behaving in a exemplary manner ?
Why so concerned about the chosenites? What about the Greek children starved to death by Churchill's blockade? Do you care about them? What about al the other gentiles? Don't they count?
@@erichartmann815 The author of the video does not talk in this video about what happened in Greece.
So in my reaction to his video, I do not take a position on the situation in Greece during the Second World War.
kinda coincidental that this video and history marche did a golden spurs video literally 1 hour apart from each other.
Me watching this from the Flemish parlement wifi
The ICT guys looking through my view history: 👁👄👁
Wow, very well researched. I find our history is told more accurately ourside our borders. Belgian mainstream media will avoid the topic or clearly support a certain narative. 🤘❤️
I cant get enough zoomer vids
my grandfather knew everybody ... Dr Elias was a close friend..He was godfather of my mother. the resistance tried to kill my family in the end days of the war but my grandfather defended our family...

One question, how big is the spanish ancestry in Belgium and between the flemish people? I read that some spanish nobles stablish there in the 80 years war period and before in the XV century.
Good question!
Don’t know about ethnic Spaniards but I do know Antwerp used to have a Sephardic community
I don't think it's that large. Never noticed at least.
Fun fact: one of the capitals of Bolivia is named after the noble Sucre family with roots in Flanders. Antonio José de Sucre served as a General under Simon Bolivar (the whole country named after him 😮).
Can you make videos about Stalin?
That would be antisemitic
@@Hook_88 What if we donate to Israel for this?
Off topic ,but can anyone recommend me , anymore real history channels, Zoomer is the best ive seen by the way,but I quickly devour his output ❤
Vid on the Battle of Berlin.
Haven’t seen it yet, take a shot every time he says Catholic.
