  • Portugal's Rui Costa claimed a stunning victory in the 2013 UCI Road World Championships Elite Mens Road Race - his country's first ever in that category - outpowering Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain in a two rider duel. Alejandro Valverde, also of Spain, then beat Italian Vincenzo Nibali for bronze.
    Rui Costa played a crafty strategic game in the final lap of the 272 kilometre race, after five riders - Nibali, Valverde, Rodriguez, Colombian Rigoberto Urán and Costa himself - broke away from the front group of around 40 on the final ascent of the Fiesole climb. The quintet, after a constant war of attrition in the previous nine laps of the tough Fireneze circuit which had seen rider after rider abandon, was looking like the race winning move, but it was far from clear which of the five ahead would take top honours.
    Whilst Urán was unlucky enough to crash on the fast drop back down into Firenze and lose all chance of disputing the win, bringing the front group down to four, Rodriguez almost simultaneously broke away with a speeding downhill attack to make a lone bid for gold.
    The solo move could have worked out, with Valverde strongly defending his Spanish team-mate as he sat on Nibali's wheel and forced the Italian to work, but Rui Costa, shadowing Valverde and Nibali and saving every ounce of energy possible, was looking better and better positioned.
    A break from Rodriguez 2km from finish
    After he was brought back by Nibali's efforts to the group of three chasers - the Italian, Valverde and Rui Costa - shortly after the summit of the Via Salviati climb, the last on the circuit, Rodriguez broke away one more time with two kilometres to go.
    For a moment, briefly, it looked as if the veteran Spaniard could have his country's first elite men's gold medal since Oscar Freire in 2004 in the bag, but when Rui Costa made his one attack really count and the Portuguese managed to break away from Nibali and Valverde and get across to Rodriguez, the race for gold was once again up in the air.
    Rodriguez and Rui Costa fought a prolongued duel in the last 200 metres for the top place on the final podium of the 2013 Toscana Road World Championships, but in the end if Rui Costa - with a lot more energy left in his legs - managed to outpower his rival. Valverde then easily outgunned an exhausted Nibali for bronze.
    "Dream come true" for Rui Costa
    "This is a dream come true. It's been a dream since I was a boy. It's like winning the lottery," said Rui Costa, his country's first ever gold medallist at Elite Men's Road Race level and the winner of two Tour de France stages this summer as well as the Tour de Suisse in 2013 and 2012.
    "I wanted this jersey more than anything. I'll do everything I can to honour it."
    In the last two kilometres, he said "all I was thinking was to close the gap as efficiently as possible. I was trying to save energy for the sprint. We had a good gap so I could focus on that."
    "It was a very hard World Championships, the rain this morning made it very tough. I had some bad moments but going into the final laps I started to believe I could do this."
    Two consolation medals for the Spanish
    "The Spanish did a very good race, but the rider who did the race of his life was Rui Costa, because he won," added Rodriguez, already a bronze medallist on a similarly tough course in 2009.
    "We want to win, and to be so close, and not win, well, that's not something to celebrate."
    "The corner where Rui attacked [with two kilometres to go] was complicated, and when he did get away, he quickly opened up a gap and after 270 kilometres, I simply couldn't follow," added Valverde, who now has five World Championships medals to his name, the most of any Spaniard in history - three silvers and two bronzes, one of which he took last year in Valkenberg.
    "I'd like to get the gold, but if I didn't win, it's because I couldn't. When Costa attacked, I couldn't follow. I would have like to have won, but we have to be content to win silver and bronze."

    How could the UCI live race commentators so callously accuse Rui Costa, one of the most intelligent riders in the international peloton, of being "daft" (stupid!)) and "selfish"? Selfish for wanting to win? Stupid for knowing exactly when to respond to an attack? Stupid for knowing exactly when to go on a breakaway? Stupid for knowing exactly when to attack? Rui Costa times everything to perfection! Those who follow professional cycling know he is that intelligent! He has both legs and brains!

    once RuiCosta bridged up to him he slowed down in an attempt to get RuiCosta to lead out the sprint. he still put up a decent fight even though he was obviously spent. props to RuiCosta though... that was one helluva move to bridge up alone like that in the end.

    The tacticts for Spain should be clear. Rodriguez neutralizing the attacks and posibiliting a sprint among this four riders, what should end with a gold medal for Valverde.
    He wanted the medal for himself and Valverde was upset.

    Rodriguez would have won if Valverde raced as a team mate and closed the gap to Rui Costa immidiately as he attacked. The only thing Valverde had to do, was to not let anyone get away up to Rodriguez.

      True. But it's also true that in a sprint among this four, Valverde would probably win. So Rodríguez just had to neutralize any attack and not going alone for his own glory.

    Im not talking about who is better or not., who's gonna dominate the next years or so... I talk about the last 10 kms of the WC race... In my opinión, Nibali was the strongest rider of the race, but he had to deal with two spaniards.... I value so much what Rui Costa did... i consider him one of future Giants in the cycling. But i have to say aswell, Rui Costa struggled to stay at the first group in the last climb... and took advantage of the effort made by Nibali in order to catch Purito...

    Nibali crashed during the race, and recovery the first group and attack the race, this is the crucial for the end of the race because he don´t have force´s attack the final moment, but strategically for me Spain doesn´t had advantage at the end because Valverde wanted to win the race not helped Rodriguez in nothing and Rodriguez the same. In the last km these four riders wanted to win the world title and for me Rui Costa was been the more intelligent because we attacked one lethal time and win!

    well by your earlier comments it sounded like you thought RuiCosta was an unworthy winner. he was strong... they all had to be to still be there in the end. they all were worthy. i'm glad he won... it's good for the sport if a new guy wins once in a while. i just wonder if they are all clean. unfortunately even RuiCosta was sort of busted a while back. but still, had Valverde won it everyone would be wondering if he was still on something.

    how long have you followed the sport? if you knew road cycling you would know that the strongest doesn't always win. a race plays out in various ways. there's circumstance, luck... and of course team tactics. had Nibali not crashed earlier he probably would have been able to go with Rodriguez, but as it was he didn't have it or simply did not want to tow Valverde up to a win. Rui Costa was strong enough to be there in the end and that, plus a very smart move, is all that mattered in the end.

    As a Portugueses I truly admire Rui Costa and believe he is a fantastic rider and tactician. He certainly deserved this win and his effort is formidable. But looking again at this video I don't understand why Rodriguez stopped pedalling just 5 to 10 meters away from the finish line when he was almost side by side with Rui (probably just a 10 to 20 cm gap). What happened? Did he miss a gear? Is it normal to just give up at this critical stage after 7 hours of race?

    • @glooer
      @glooer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it may be one of two situations, he may have had a cramp or he knew that even if he keeps pedaling he would not have enough momentum to beat Rui at the line. In this case I think it would be the latter because Rui had better timing and held out longer in his sprint effort.

    • @Velocipeden
      @Velocipeden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I immediately saw the same thing, and either he gave up OR he mistook the white line of adverts for the finish line, which I think is more likely. You can also see him make a gesture with his hand after they cross the line - not towards Rui Costa, but more like a regular "God damn it" moment :)

    • @glooer
      @glooer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      1stPlaceDirector It is the same with speed skating, timing is everything, with only two meters to go there is not enough space to make up for the gap, be it half a bike. It would be a different thing in a bunch sprint with much more momentum where one can celebrate too early like Zabel did and got pipped by a lunge. In an one on one situation like this one, once you get passed at the beginning of the sprint and fail to pass your rival half way through then you lost.

    • @tiagobeja4272
      @tiagobeja4272 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pedro valente O que se passou foi que o Rodriguez sabia que muito dificilmente ganhava ao Rui Costa ao sprint, então esperou que o Valverde (que era dos 4 ciclistas da frente o mais rápido) chegasse, não te esqueças que eles eram da mesma seleção, mas já não foi a tempo.
