Love how your language make it sound very generalizable from the beginning, you don't even need to put an effort to hear it as a metaphor

"My Obsession with Winning" sounds like "Suffering from Success" ngl 😂

Okay but like... That's a good point and definitely a part of the bigger picture I think
Lol I would not have understood anything I'm saying at certain points of my life. I think that's the problem with obsessively chasing success, it just steals your energy and pigeon holes you. You never really accomplish what you want to get done. You're just being neurotic about it.

I used to be an athlete, and I took a year off. After a year I jumped straight into running 10km cause in my mind I've always been a fit person. But after getting shin splints I've been constantly reminding myself that its about "progress, not perfection." And this applies to everything in my life.

No way. I clicked on your video looking for inspiration as usual, next thing I know, not only are you talking about running (my face lit up)...you're running the Paris Marathon!! I just so happen to be running it too! Take comfort in the fact that I started training last week. I'm just as much a gas-on-the-fire kind of guy, whether that's with running since I was little - never training but disappointed with anything less than to win - or with my TH-cam channel I had so much motivation and energy to create, but completely stopped months later. You're my biggest inspiration for wanting to get back into it, because I want to change the style of my videos to something resembling yours, since this is my real passion as a philosophy student. You and Thomas (Brag) are actually a big part of the reason I'm on exchange in France right now. Good frickin luck Nathaniel and I'll give you a sweaty high five at the finish line if I spot you. Man I would love to talk. Better get your butt into gear if you're serious about that sub 4:00. Knowing you, you'll pull through.

Started running at age of 24 while living abroad in Vienna. Best decision ever, it brought clarity in my personal/ professional life, it made me understand myself in a way I never imagined. 6 years later, I finished around 6 marathons (Paris included).

I just meditated early on my over-obsession with winning & accomplishing my dream. This coming out couldn’t have came at a better time

Hey Nathaniel! Read about Zone 2 training and aerobic base building. You need to run slower and build a lot of mileage for a few weeks / months, before you start running faster. Seems like you're discovering these ideas through experience :)

I’ve ran ultras for the past few years and it’s so true! Base building is the past thing for any race longer than a half marathon.

I love this metaphor. I’ve just been getting into painting this semester in college and I’ve noticed looking at my works that my favorite ones are the ones I went into without a clear idea of the end result. The more freedom I gave myself to experiment meant the more fun I was having as well as I felt I was learning so much more from those pieces.

Oh, Nathaniel, this hits home! I'm so competitive as well. Thanks to therapy I've become super aware of my habits & patterns, but I still manage to shock myself how extreme I can get when I'm in my winning/competitive mindset haha. Cheers to being human & thank you for your vulnerability :)

You need to read the book What I talk about when I talk about running by Murakami! Just read it myself!

I'm almost the same exact way. Runs where I set out to go "hard" are almost always my worst. Whereas when I go based on how I'm feeling that day, they go much better. It's actually been a great tool for self discovery and, like you mentioned, learning the value of patience. I've seen myself implement this in other areas of my life since I started my training as well, which is super cool.

    Enjoy it all.

This reminds me so much of my latest video except it's about playing piano instead of running. I love finding the deeper meaning and wisdom behind ordinary things in life. And I couldn't agree more with taking your time to get into the flow rather than forcing yourself to perform in a specific way. Maybe we all just need to learn how to get out of our own way in life 😊

    Such a nice piece.. 💡
Start with having fun, then competitive for pushing yourself and to Win.
In my opinion.. Title doesn't fully resonate the crux of the video.

I was a competitive runner for many years. In training, what you are describing in the first half of the video was called, “tempo.” Maybe this video should have been called “The Tempo of Life.” 🤔 that’s a bit of a cliche, isn’t it? 😅 I loved this video! ❤

I mean just because you run slow at the beginning of a run doesnt mean you should take everything you want to perform well at slow. Its a non sequitur

Yeah…it’s called “flow” I don’t think you can control it, there is no on-off switch. It comes to people who are patient, who listen to their chosen art and to those who deserve it… 13:10 13:10

This came in at the perfect time, for I have started running just one month ago. You gave me a very valuable advice here, and it also reassures me in how I should be approaching my big goals and ambitions in life. It all resonated as a big truth inside me. Thank you so much Nathaniel ☺️🤍
