  • Time to review Nefarious, an indie film about demonic possession. The problem with this thing is it spends too much time preaching about the state of the world and not enough time weaving an interesting story with interesting characters.

This movie should’ve took notes from Faith: the unholy trinity. The game had its religious elements done well without being edgy or preachy

When you brought up the "state of the world" criticism, you actually made me see the scene from a standpoint I hadn't before, initially I liked it, but now I see it, a demon telling the truth and blatantly revealing to you where society has gone wrong and where exactly the sin lies, is extremely out of character, if anything, it takes the evil out of it and makes it seem like the demon's suddenly being good, demons aren't supposed to save souls, they're supposed to corrupt and take them.
It defeats the purpose if suddenly it shows a character that doesn't believe in such things that they do in fact exist and blows the whole story's wad in one punch.
"The devil is a liar" is the most straightforward guide on how to write such characters in a story, if it suddenly tells the truth, then it voids the statement and kills the premise.
I get that the directors wanted to add a christian message to the movie but it should have been more dispersed rather than up front in that moment.

People forget how C. S. Lewis did The Screwtape Letters.

I heard the complete opposite about Nefarious, but I will be checking it out for myself to formulate my own opinion. In the meantime, I have a horror film to recommend, it's called The Curse but it has an alternative title called Eight for Silver ( much better ) I think you will like it.

I haven't heard of this film until this review. Guess I'll be giving this one a hard pass. If I didn't like the preachiness of the mainstream, why would I put up with it here?

My #1 problem with the film (which I mostly "enjoyed") was stuff like the opening scene showing the picture on the wall move. Even the first time watching I went "THAT was a bad choice." Supposedly we're supposed to wonder initially if Bradey/Nefarious is serious about the possession or he's trying to game the system to avoid the execution...BUT stuff like that spoils "Yes, it's a real demon."

What i love about it is that the demon is more subtle then most. Demons in movies

      C. S. Lewis still set the standard in his book The Screwtape Letters, and while I like this movie, it is very preachy, and the people that made it admitted to doing it more to get a message out of how demons and the devil do things.
Aka, they focused more on the message as a sermon, then making it done well as a movie.
Easy mistake to make, just hope they learn from it for next time.

I do know the people making this were TRYING to tell how demons tend to be irl, but yeah, this was not the best it could be done.
Good first attempt, but improvement can be had.

This reminds me of when I watched The Shift, then Aquaman: the Lost Kingdom almost back-to-back. One was an hours-long preachathon,… and the other was _The Shift._

The issue is Steve Deace wrote the film. If you know anything about him you’ll understand why the film is the way it is.

He didn't write the screenplay, but he did write what it was based on. Generally speaking I don't particularly care if someone of a political background writes fiction, but you've gotta put the story before your politics, not the other way around.

While I was mostly very impressed with the film, I do see this point as very valid. In many ways Nefarious is VASTLY superior to the majority of Christian movies made today...but of course, that shouldn't lead us to think it's a great film IN ITSELF. The PERFORMANCES are excellent, but I do see that WHAT they're saying is the problem. You can see the acting and the DELIVERY of the lines make it easy for a lot of folks to at times miss the preaching.

Christian entertainment like Nefarious fails for the same reason progressive left wing entertainment like modern Marvel Comics fails. It's too concerned with 'the message' and seems to be worried that telling a good story that isn't preaching at you every five minutes would get in the way of that message.
Moon Channel did a recent video on the same sort of issue with 'Christian' video games that I recommend everyone watch. Basically. There's just something inherent to the way most American Christians practice their religion that keeps them from making good art. They're so worried about making something that may even slightly offend God that they self-sabotage themselves from making anything decent.

So your criticism is a non-secular movie intentionally targeting a secular audience is "too preachy". You should repost this review on r/whoosh. The complaint that a novel/film designed to give a sermon disguised as horror succeeded in it's goal is hilarious.
