Best spit shading tutorial I've seen till now. Really good! Thx for the good videos
Thank you for the feedback and kind words. Let me know if there’s anything more you would like to see!
just got an apprenticeship and am obsessed with your flash videos. really lovely work, thanks so much
I’ve been getting commissions for tattoo designs, and while researching I heard about spit shading. Had no idea it referred to using spit to create the gradients!
I just wanted to say thank you for NOT doing a time lapse. I see so many videos that speed through the work they are doing....I want to see it in real time.
Really opened my eyes to how I'm shading which I didn't even realise. Handy to know about leaving the distinct grey line/shading in when for colouring
Thank you for the feedback!
Awesome man. Started working on stuff again, this has been great refresher material!
Great tutorial, I appreciate that you mentioned you don't really know if the ink you use is toxic or not. Thought you'd be simply using Dinamic and calling it a day assuming it'll be ok. 🤘
You doing a great job!! love your style, do more vis like this!!
Thank you for the love! I will definitely keep pushing out more videos!
This was truly helpful. I’m new to spit-shading, so I’m finding it very difficult, but i know the practice will pay off. For the colour, are you using ink still? Or water colour?
Keep em' coming! I paint flash but it's always nice to see how others do it. Definitely learned a thing or two from you!
Thank you and I’m glad to hear that. There are new videos in the making!
@@SoberjoeSe Awesome! Cheers.
Nice clean work!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Loving your videos brother, keep'em coming please!
Thank you!
Hey bro great vid! Can you make a video on principles of where to shade these? I’m having trouble figuring out what should be shaded without a reference
Just wanted to say thank you again!!
Thank you for taking your time! 🙏🏻
Great job! It was very helpful, thank you. You should paint some felines, I'd love to see a panther or a tiger in your style. Keep it up!!
Thank you! 🙏🏻 will look into that!
Your Ebook says out of stock on the site?
Rad video! Def the best I've seen this was very helpful!!

Dope this helped me so much

Amazing werks brotha I'm a inspiring artist and starting my first flash portfolio ...any tips on using water color as a pose to inks? Much love ! Big shout out from the CALI BAY AREA
What is the title of the second rap song?!! Love the video!!
have you find the title yet? been searchin for it too man
Awesome work! Love it man! Quick question is the red your using ink as well or watercolor paint?
Hi, glad you like it! The red is watercolor from Dr. PH Martins
Great now I want to draw
do you use Chinese ink?
Go for it! I use Talens India Ink. I find Chinese ink to give a much glossier finish than I’d like.
awesome mate..love your vids...what brand brushes do you use?
Thank you! I’m using Winsor & Newton Cotman amzn.to/32qS0QF
Sober Joe thanks dude..love your vids man they’ve really helped
I’m glad it does. There are more videos coming out soon so stay tuned. In the mean time, make sure to follow me on Instagram: @soberjoecollective
I post regularly new updates
great channel! hope it grows
Thank you! I hope so too as I want to help as many as possible!
I just found your utube.. Awsome!! Thank you.. What black ink are u using? I'm struggling with smooth shading. Using speed ball..
Thanks, Joe! Your videos are great. I like seeing different methods of flash painting. Never thought to try that W&N india ink - going to give that one a go! It's easier to get than the Dr.Marten's one.
I immediately subscribed to your channel because it is great and teaches a lot! Thanks from the bottom of my heart! 🖤🖤🖤
Just one question: I'm an apprentice tattoo artist and I'd like to understand: does the process work the same on the skin for tattooing? I mean, to make the color shades I can first make the shades of black and white and then pass the color over, or I make them with different shades of color, (for example, for the rose petals from the darkest red to lighter red)??? Sorry for my question, I'm a rookie but I really want to learn!! Thank you so much !!!!!
Hi man! Thank you for the comment. I’ve decided not to share any tattoo Q/A here on the channel as I think tattooing should be taught by a mentor IRL. Hope you can understand this. Tattooing is a health risk and should be practiced under control.
@@SoberjoeSe I understand perfectly, I appreciate your honesty! Unfortunately, this is a very difficult time and it is almost impossible to find a mentor to welcome you to his studio. Meanwhile, I continue to draw and learn thanks to kind people like you who share their passion with pleasure! Peace ✌️
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
dude thank you.
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Where did you get your honeycomb paint palette? I really like how small and convenient it is but cant find where to buy it.
They are hivecaps, used for tattoo inks usually
Surely there's a way of getting the same result without having to suck on the brush.
Yeah by using water or a water dispenser brush. But I don’t think it’s called spit shading then.
This was incredible to watch, you are amazing at showing and demonstrating this technique. Thankyou so much! Your designs are beautiful, im wondering does the ink taste in your mouth affect you at all? 😊
Thank you for the kind words!
As a matter of fact the brush doesn't really pick up much of that ink so normally it doesn't taste anything. Of course I've messed up some times and my lips and tongue went black as hell afterwards. Rinse with water and keep at it! =)
Thank you for watching!
@@SoberjoeSe Thankyou so so much for the reply! I hopefully will be signing a contract for a Tattoo Aprenticeship next month and I will be binging your videos after finding your channel now. It is incredible really that your educating and sharing your knowledge so I really am so grateful !! 🤗😊
I love how calm your voice and the format you record and edit i, i find it really hard to learn from digital art as well as very loud music etc.
You really are amazing, I will be studying your designs and the way you colour. 😍
Oh my. Thank you for your kind words!
I'm happy you found an apprenticeship. The reason I'm doing these videos is that I started my career with a mentor that couldn't help me paint tattoo flash. It took me years to figure these things out. As there are hard to find a good mentor that does tattoos that you're interested in you gotta take the ones that are willing to do it. I'm just here to help you learn how to paint if your mentor lacks the skills.
@@SoberjoeSe You are so welcome!!!
Also I just saw you are from Sweden, oh my god I will be travelling to Våsteräs for the aprenticeship. That is amazing, where are you based at?
I think that is so admirable.. you really are making a difference for people like me and this is definitely is making me feel Sweden is the best choice for me right now. 🤗🤗
Oh really!
I live in Gävle, it's 145km north from Västerås.
Send me a DM on Instagram if you want me to help you in any way.
You're most welcome to Sweden.
Hey bud, do you use the same ink to shade that you use to line?
Hi man! Yeah I use Talens Indian Ink for all the blacks including lines.
the inks are safe ish if they have the AP mark on them
Yeah I've learned that! Thank you!
@@SoberjoeSe no problem man, thanks for the inspiration to paint !
so good, wow!!! i subscribed! i draw too.... i hope i can inspire you, like your art did
Your comment inspire me to do more videos. Thank you very much!
Btw. Your art are really great! 👍🏻
Can I ask you a curiosity? when you start coloring do you use pure color or do you dilute it with water so as not to cover the shades?
Watercolors are often transparent so you don’t need to dilute it. I do dilute some colors to get a lighter color. Thank you for taking time to write me a question.
@@SoberjoeSe
For example the ecolines do not need to be diluted when coloring over the shades?
That's correct!
does anybody know if Winsor and Newton ink is toxic?
I have no idea, maybe try sending them an email to see if can find an answer. If you do find out, let me know.
I did what you did and I'm peeing black. Is that ok?
Great tutorial keep up the good work!!!
Btw : don’t thing talens is poison , got so many tats done with it and I’m still alive 😅
Haha me too! I have Pelikan in my earlier tattoos.
This is such a helpful video thank you for this! But I need to know how many times you've accidentally put the wrong brush in your mouth... I knew I was gonna make that mistake eventually and then I actually DID and ended up with a mouth full of straight black ink LOL I'm sure it will happen again though
Thank you for the kind words! Yeah it happens a few times per month 😂
@@SoberjoeSe Good to know I'm not alone 😭 but seriously this video was super helpful to learn spit shading! Really like how you included the training sheet, it's great for practice :) ty!
No problem man! Let me know over on Instagram if you’re struggling with something!
Okay so it’s normal to get ink in your mouth. I’m new to this and found it strange but hey if that’s what needs to be done so be it. Thank you for this!
It's totally normal! =)
Homie you’re gonna get ink everywhere
I am surprised, and kind of relieved to see that spit shading is a thing, and i'm not some weirdo that uses various ammounts of saliva for controlled shading with watercolors. I never cared about getting watercolor in my mouth...as i've put significantly worse things in my body.
Haha! Glad to hear it Olivia!
Good video but the music ? 😂😂
SUCK ON THE BRUSH YOU KNOW LOL
My lines are so shaky! Oh wait I’m an alcoholic that’s why
PSA for anyone attempting to follow along : set the playback speed to 0.5
That’s absolutely terrible for your body toxic or not it’s ink
I have been into art for nearly 25 years, I did come across a guy in prison that did this and I was like oh cool.. I didn’t know it was a thing or that I had seen it before.. my question is: wtf and why lol not disrespectfully I promise, but doesn’t the paint get in your mouth.?? Do you just swallow it.? Can’t you do this same thing with a little bit of warm salt water and a paper towel in place of your mouth.?
