In this video I go through a painting on 140lb Arches Cold Press Paper from the block. Outlined with a B5 Speedball Nib, Higgins Black Magic ink, Windsor Newton watercolor
Hand drawn and painted flash has so much more value. Especially for artists that are not yet well established. I feel like it creates security for the client that oh my artist can actually make shit.
Thank you for making this less intimidating for me! Ive been told countless times to paint traditional before i ask for apprenticeships and this made it super super understandable!
Thank you for taking the time to share your skills and lessons learned. I found your videos a week ago and am very stoked to see some new content. Very inspirational stuff.
thank you so much for this. my last apprenticeship fell through due to conflicts with the shop owner, he sucked but so did i tbh. i’ve been really invested in painting and drawing for the next year and this gave me so much insight. i especially love the details about the nib bc i was using one but couldn’t get a feel for it. seriously thank you
@100tattoo is there a certain technique on staining the paper with coffee? I just ordered everything I needed to start doing traditional flash paintings and this video was very helpful I just wish you showed the coffee staining process!
Cool man. Please ramp up the content dude I know your busy but really love your vidz also if your ever over in Scotland gimme a shout as I'd love some of that flash done. All the best.@@100tattoo
Do u draw the design directly on that paper? If not how do you get it on there, I have a bunch of drawings in my sketchbook I want to make into flash but I don’t know how to get it transferred on it? Beginner here sorry and thanks
Great video. Thanks..fwiw You should try leaving your work sit for at least 24-48 hrs. And then cut it off the block..That will eliminate almost All of that buckling.
Thanks for the tip. I use a light table to transfer the designs but I’ve been thinking about doing it another way or drawing it direct so I can leave it on the block 👍
Why do you use Windsor newton black instead of just shading with the black ink you’re using or a bottle of FW? Most everyone I know that does super traditional flash uses FW or whatever their choice of black they outline with for all their black shading and then switch to watercolor (if they use it) or FW (or whatever their brand of choice) for any color parts? Is it just personal preference? Or do you do it to replicate the way the guys that started the American traditional style did it as accurately as possible? I’ve used FW and never had a problem and it’s more like tattooing since you can run over the black with color when necessary. I like learning different styles and techniques whenever possible: thanks -Devon (pronounced Devin)
Dr martins is dye, it will fade over time. Watercolor is pigment and more light fast from what I’ve heard from older tattoo artists. Dr Martins does fade stupid easy though. Fun to use.
Which colors do you like to use for traditional art? I picked up some of these to see how it works out for me, I like the idea of using them over the dr martens.
Question... Is there a way to do this without putting the brush in your mouth during the shading? I just feel like i cant put myself past that part lol😂
For me it’s just a habit. It’s how I hold the brush 🤣 you can set the shading brush off to the side, or my co worker tapes each brush together making it double sided. Just use water to shade on your clean brush, use a paper towel or something to get the correct amount of water on the brush you need.
Dude fill a cheap felt tip pen with with some Talons indian ink!! like the cheapest dolar store type kids felt tip pens, much better than a calligraphy nib.

I can’t stand seeing newer tattooers post “flash” that’s literally screen shots arranged onto a water color background on procreate.
@@100tattoo and its never well composed, 70 designs on one screenshot lmaooo..

I’m glad my low budget video has had such a big impact! I’m trying to get better at the quality and camera angles
I could watch this for hours.
This is such a good demonstration. Thanks for doing this. I’m not a tattooist but appreciate the art form and gonna start painting some flash.

Love these videos. Could you do one on how you like to transfer the design to the flash sheet and your thoughts on composition maybe in the future?
Yeah good request
Very nice.

When I paint my black comes out glossy and my color matte. Is that normal?
Keep up the content.

What’s your take on dr martens vs the Windsor water color?
Dr martins is dye, it will fade over time. Watercolor is pigment and more light fast from what I’ve heard from older tattoo artists. Dr Martins does fade stupid easy though. Fun to use.
Ok, cool. the Windsor watercolor has a nice vibrant look to it and I’ve seen the dr martens inks, they have a lighter fade to them.

? On the tube what red is that in the tube paint looks deep red.
Cadmium Red
Thanks
@@100tattoo I would not be licking the brush if that's cadmium. Good way to get mouth cancer.

8 months bro, do the Chicano napkin with ballpoint
What brushes do you prefer, brand?
I just got my brushes at the local art store, but I think Winsor Newton are best
great video, great flash sheet, word of advice from painter to painter, dont like the brush. The paint is gonna harm you.
