I’m just getting into drawing traditional flash and I’m keen to learn new techniques and what equipment is best to use, this video is extremely inspiring!! Thanks☺️
Thank you for the kind words! Let me know if there's anything I can help you with, just DM me on Instagram @soberjoecollective. If you're looking for materials check out the link under the video for a list of materials I'm using.
Would love to hear more about spit shading. When I coffee stain, I use a teaspoon or two of instant espresso, with a little water. Gives a cool gritty look when applied with a foam brush. Also, I think it would be cool if you could provide a line drawing so we could do a “paint along”. Just an idea. Cheers.
Thank you for taking your time to comment. Your staining idea will definitely help someone reading through the comments. So I will make sure to pin it. The line drawing idea is really great and I will make sure to provide it with the next video. Thank you again!
Awesome, thinking about bringing this in as an assignment for my high school arts class as an excuse for them to create something they never would in another class and to teach them about tattoo history. Very cool.
This is amazing! I wish I could produce such a clean piece of art that quickly! And if no one else has mentioned it, I’d LOVE to see video/series on how to properly spitshade!
Your videos have really helped me I felt stuck while trying to do traditional designs but I feel more at ease when I watch your vids! Also didn’t realize how much I’d enjoy spit shading it’s way easier than what I was doing !!
Thank you so much Sober Joe, you have helped me bring my art to another level. Sometimes you get lost trying to figure out what art material will work for you and what technique may help you improve. With your guidance, I feel like I am on the right track to make timeless and beautiful work. Thanks again Joe!
Thanks Sober Joe, I’m a multi-gen, but traditionally schooled artist.“Tatted” friends have told me I should consider acquiring a Flash technique and putting some of my creations in a “flesh venue”. thanks for these tutorials. You have amazing skill, and have “earned your chops”. How can I find out more about the brushes and iPad and any software ect. Please mention it by name in a future video. Thanks. Grateful to see you work.👍🏻
Awesome video. Thank u so much. I am just getting into this type painting and hoping to tattoo someday. I would love to hear more about the spit shading as well.
Thank you! You can do it in thousand different ways, this is just my preferred way at the moment. Glad to be able to motivate you! New videos are rolling out weekly so make sure to check back! 👍🏻
hey Joe, nice video, very soothing and also thank god for the chill music. Would it be possible maybe to make another video, exactly like this but narrating the functions you use with the i-pad? that would be a lot of help for a beginner. Just a suggestion :) Thank you!
I would love an in detail spit shade. If I just use spit it’s like it doesn’t pick up the ink and almost looks like tattoo pepper shading. If I use a little water it’s always just way too much and the blend ends up being a huge fade when I just want that little fade like you have here
hey soberjoe love the videos and work I would love a video on the spit technique also would it be possible for Japanese tutorials many thanks and keep up the work
Hi. I think digital helps us a lot. I do most of the styles and now learning traditional and I would waste so much paper and if you use Archers, which is shit expensive here in poland you gonna waste a lot of money. So you sketch and train yourself digitally then switch to traditional. With oil or acrylic painting is slightly different. You paint and half of it just happens on itself.
Thank you so much for your videos man - watching your sketching workflow and your comments was really helpful! Which of the 3 Ph Martins sets do you think is most useful? I can only afford one and they aren't stocked in stores in my country...
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment. I use different colors from each set . I can post later the names of each color you see in the video.
These are the colors I’m using in this video. Red - Dr. Ph. martins 5A Scarlet Red Yellow - Dr. Ph. martins 26B Golden Brown Green - A tattoo ink named Jade from Eternal mixed with a lot of water.
This might be a stupid question, but do you keep a bowl of spit on the side? Or do you just lick the brush? Just thinking when using the black ink brush you would stain your tongue or something haha
Love this video! I have been using Pigma Micron pens to outline my drawings..and I’m seeing some bleeding when it come to start painting it, how can I avoid bleeding of the outline into the color fill in? Is it the pens I’m using?
Just a quick question for an aspiring tattoo artist, would it be wrong of me if I copied just traditional flash tattoo designs from google to my portfolio that I’m making?? Cuz I’m not exactly sure how to draw certain things without looking at it really :/ but I don’t want to be looked at wrongfully…
Copying them straight off claiming it being yours is not the correct way of doing it. Study the design you like and try to redraw them a couple of times changing the things you don't like. Finally you will have altered them as your own design.
Hey boss, super-rad lesson. I really dug it. Quick question; It looks like you were possibly using a thicker liner pen on this flash piece (I could be totally wrong) than what was listed on the materials page on your site. I grabbed everything off your list but think my new liner (non-tapered, 1.0) may still be a bit too thin. Do you recommend a thicker pen for a medium to large piece like in this lesson? If so, what size? Thanks again man, you’re gnarly.
Hi man! Glad you liked it. I’m using a Copic Multiliner 1.0 (classic, not SP) isn’t this video and the design is painted on a A5 sized paper. Regarding line sizes it’s totally up to you. I like having a thick line while others might want to have a thinner one for better details. Show me your paintings over on Instagram, I’d love to see!
@@SoberjoeSe Hey, boss! Thanks for hitting me back! I wasn’t able to find the Copic liners in town, but I did grab some non-tapered 1.0s from the art store. Actually, after using the liners for a few more hours tonight, they really started to get a bit fatter and more uniform with each pull (plus, smoother on the watercolor paper). Mine might be a bit thinner than yours still, but I’ll keep experimenting. I know I’ll be able to better match pen widths to actual machine liner widths at some point, but now it’s unclear. As for sharing the paintings, nah, they’re for sure gonna suck for a while but, once they start looking almost decent, I’ll be sure to share for your thoughts and critique. Tear them apart man, I’ll need the corrections! Thanks again for getting back to me, Chief! Have a good one!

Thank you! Yeah there are new videos coming as we speak!
Came across your page it’s fantastic and would love to see a tutorial on spit shading it’s on of the things I was weak at.
Love the artwork! For sure I would love to learn more about spit shading!
Thank you! I'd love to do a video on spit shading soon.
When you paint the black fades, you use watercolor or indian ink? Thanks in advance!!😊

hey joe your ecoline looks more opaque then the regular ones that you buy from an arts and crafts store? do you add some type of solution?
Hello, can u tell me the golden brown code ? The last one the colored. I’m looking at this color thank you very much.
Hi Joe can i ask you witch software is this ? coplimenti per i tuoi video e un saluto da Roma....
pleeease tell me more about the procreate brush setup :)
In one of my latest videos you can see me work more with Procreate!
@@SoberjoeSe thanks joe! I’m working on my flash rn so I’ll put it on while I’m working 🌱🙏🏻😎

Hi! I just released a video on how to spit shade. th-cam.com/video/i_J6MeG2uQY/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for the comment!
@@SoberjoeSe thank you
Try Minwax Golden Oak stain. Put in a fine mist spray bottle and coat evenly.
Never heard of. Have to try it out.
This is an amazing resource thank you so much!
love it! what brushes are you using?
Do you add water to ecoline?
Have you used talen ecoline watercolour brush pens? Tossing up between buying those or the ink them selves
I haven't tried them out, sorry.
@@SoberjoeSe no worries thank you so much for the reply! Love your work
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Nice!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
love your videos! can i ask what the palette is that you used for ink? the hexagons
Thank you! They are called Hive-cups. Created for tattoo artists but I find them great for painting.
@@SoberjoeSe oh awesome thanks i’ll have to snag some of those. do you have an affiliate link? that way you get credit
I don’t but thanks for asking! 🙏🏻
I’m sure you figured it out, but there’s hive cups on Amazon. $20 for 200
Would i be able to get the same effect just using a brush marker?
Definitely!
Are you filling and shading with the winsor and newton drawing ink or with a black watercolor?
All blacks are Indian ink. 👍🏻
Sick 🤙🏼🔥
Thanks! 🙏🏻

I'm using my mouth to add moisture to my brush. If doing correctly theres hardly any ink residue on that brush.

If you don’t mind me asking what tablet are you using ?
I’m using an 12” iPad Pro 2019
Do you make your own colors or do you find those matte colors in dr Phil Martins? I recently switched over to liquid acrylics for more pigment
Sometimes I mix my own Hues but oftentimes it’s straight out of the bottle.
What printer do you use to print out your design from the iPad?
Just a regular printer. Nothing fancy!
What pen are you using to line?
*silly me, just seen the description haha. Awesome work man!!
Yeah it's all there! 👍🏻
what’s the iPad program you’re using to sketch?
I’m using Procreate! It’s really the only one I’m using.
What kind of pen is that?
What app are you using on the iPad ?
I’m using Procreate!
Hey , thanks for the content! Wich green are you using for this painting?
Hi! Thank you for watching! I'm using a tattoo ink called Jade from Eternal. It's heavily diluted with water to be able to paint with it.
