True story: I used to carry a Victorinox Rally on my car keys (I've swapped it for a Spyderco Grasshopper now). The Rally has the same size knife blade as the Midnite Manager. Once I was at the supermarket, in line waiting to pay. The checkout guy called the manager over and said, 'Can you get me a knife? The conveyor belt is stuck.' There was a piece of rubber coming off the side and getting jammed in the rollers, so the belt wouldn't move. I said, 'You need a knife? Here you go' and handed over my little Rally. It cut right through that conveyor belt rubber and got the checkout queue moving again. I was the hero of the supermarket! So that knife blade isn't as flimsy and useless as you think. Yes, for sure the Grasshopper is a superior blade - but does it come with a toothpick and tweezers, eh? ;-)
There is alot of really good thinking that went into this knife that you don't know til you live with it for a few years. I have been carrying the midnight manager / manager going on 15 years. For example the phillips screwdriver fits a suprisingly broad spectrum of phillips heads. The flat head perfectly fills the void for turning larger philllips heads that the smaller phillips head wont work on. The flat head works for a large spectrum of flat heads and for the really large flat heads you can use the spine of the flat head to turn. I have accomplished alot of tasks that seemed well outside the realm of this light duty knife. I use the pen alot. If you work in the office or in the field, (I do both) having a pen always with you for small writing tasks saves the day in a pinch and everyone is amazed. Especially since they don't have a pen on them. I have handed out the tweezers on several occasions to dig out splinters. The steel is soft but sharpens really fast and you don't have to be a knife expert to get a decent edge on it. Never any rust issues and as like with all Victorinox knives, they have a kind of extra polishing that gives it a more smooth sanitary feel compared to a leatherman. The scissors from my experience are the best out there for cutting fingernails. The knife works good for small tasks but is limited. I have tried Leathermans EDC but keep coming back this being able to accomplish all of my EDC along with maybe a nice folder to accompany it. This also makes a perfect gift for non-knife people. They can just throw it on their keychain and forget about it until they need it and save the day.
Would be even better if the flat and philips opened in that direction too though if you're trying to tighten some tiny screw in the dark say in the back of a computer like nick mentioned or similar.
This knife is excellent! It’s obviously for smaller jobs but people would be surprised by the usefulness of it. Most of our mundane everyday tasks are summed up by cutting off tags, paper, writing down someone’s name and number and what have you... That knife suits all of that and the quality is high too. I don’t agree that this model shouldn’t come with a knife blade because the TSA would confiscate it from you.. The scissors is enough for them to confiscate the knife as well. However, if you just put it in your checked luggage, the problem is solved without losing any of the tools. Ultimately, you can’t compare the little Victorinox model to the Leatherman Wave and other much sturdier models. Once again, the Midnite Manager is for smaller jobs.
I own Leatherman Wave and Skeletool, and also manager. IMHExperience, the steel on the victorinox Phillips driver and standard victorinox can opener are stronger than the bits on leatherman. Leatherman driver are really prone to stripping compare to Victorinox. Manager on the other hand have a week pivot due to it small size of the driver. Hence its light duty. Pen knife good for opening food packages, cereal box, can container, and if you maintain the edge, you can use it as an exacto for cutouts. The key is light duty. Instead of having a single keychain flashlight, might as well have a midnite manager/midnite minichamp. You'll be surprised how much you reach for this little bugger everyday. It fits front coin pocket too
I think you probably have to live with it for a while to truly appreciate the small phillips. It works on an amazingly wide range of phillips. Also, the steel is not a concern. Your bigger concern would be stripping screws. I've carried the same rambler for over 20 years, and the phillips looks absolutely mint.
So I recently picked up the midnite manager@work model (adds a 16 gig usb 3 type A and usb C memory stick) and I must say that it is extremely useful in the context of an office job EDC. I no longer need to worry about carrying a flashlight, usb, or pen at all times, each of which are things that I use infrequently but often enough to make me worried about not having them. Basically it has made being prepared while not having ridiculous looking slacks pocket bulge issues (a potential first impression issue). Edit: 3 years later and I can only say that my love for this SAK has increased and that every single tool, including the wire stripper, has been used and worked to perfection. The only downside i can say is that it is now up to 61.99 american off of the vic website, which makes it a much harder proposition.
A few days ago, I counted up how many times I used my Classic SD SAK. I ended up using it 26 times. It is by far my most used tool, just because it is always right there in my pocket.
The classic SD has been a lifesaver but I'm telling you upgrade to the Manager. Has everything and same length only wider and bit heavier but it's addition of the phillips head, pen and bottle opener is needed. Includes the scissors too. No phillips head on the SD was deal breaker and the flathead on it will do in a pinch but isn't great.
I work in an ER. A small quick cut for packaging is great so the scissors are great. The flat screw driver is great because everything takes batteries and everything is screwed shut and everything is screwed to the wall. I have to keep my nails super short for infection control and the scissors and file are great with that. We have so much things that are pre-made and assembled and it not rare for a plastic shelf to not slide perfect or for me to need to scrape a sticker off of something. I need to be able to use and discard a pen and probably need another just a minute later. My "drop pen" is great to leave in a room and pick up another after changing gloves and washing my hands. I have to carry trauma sheers, gauze, alcohol pads, tape, my phone, keys, a radio, and maybe even a work phone. The size and convenience for this is ideal for my situations. Any heavy work tools I can dig out a toolbox, but fixing a quick issue so I can turn over a room for the next patient is necessary.
I cannot speak to the Midnight Manager, specifically; but, the phillips screwdriver on my Explorer and Swisstool Spirit X have both been through hell and back without stripping.
I luckily ran into buying a rambler over 20 years ago on vacation in Europe. I had never seen a 58mm with the phillips. I've been carrying/using it for 20 years since basically, and the phillips is still like new.
It’s funny how I carry a Rambler every single day and it gets at least as much use as my trusty Carter neck knife. I think the bottle opener and tiny Phillips are incredibly handy for most small screws and all bottles . I’ve had it for 10 years and it has held up super well.
He's comparing a tiny knife to huge survival knives and big multitools and that seems kind of unfair. You buy a small Victorinox knife to put on a keychain and use it for small things, not for surviving in the wild. And with the price, anything is going to be expensive when you factor in the cost of electronics. If you don't mind not having a light get a classic or standard manager
The Manager is the best keychain swiss army on the market. It has the scissors, the phillips head, bottle opener, pen is super handy and all the same length as the classic. Upgraded my classic to the manager best decision. There are my bigger ones without the scissors or phillips head and those are must haves imo.
I use the small Victorinox knife to open plastic pacakges and cut box flaps at work. It can handle more than an envelope. It is a good blade. Also, Vicrinox steel is soft for a reason. It is meant to be a beater and an easy to maintain knife. It doesn't rust, it takes a sharp edge, and a fine enough edge for most use. It also sharpens easily. It does not hold an edge long, but the steel has many good qualities, you just need to be willing to sharpen it.
6:18 - 6:25 I so much agree with this! In the 58mm category, Victorinox should definitely produce more models with no blade at all. Honestly, scissors, nail file and tweezers are the only things I really expect from 58mm SAK. I do not say that blade is useless, I just wish there were more models without it.
I've had a Midnight Manager for almost 24 years. The Phillips screwdriver is magnetic, and still holds screws. The tip still looks like new. I have used it working on PCs, not building houses with it. Through the years, my battery door has gotten lost and the plastic piece that works the pen has broken off, but I still carry it every day. Several years ago, I was careless (read "stupid") and sliced my thumb cutting off a zip-tie. The knife was so sharp that I didn't feel it, but I felt the 10 stitches I got at the ER. This is an amazing little knife.
Key chained carried for decades. Pen is important and serves it's purpose well. The battery and cover lost twice so I've given up on LED. The philips head screwdriver is most impressive. Fits very tiny as well as rather large screws perfectly and bites positively. Prepared to sacrifice an old Midnight Manager to break a large frozen 8-32 screw loose. Positioned the screw driver at a right angle to the handle for max busting torque. Could this tool take this abuse? CRACK---the screw broke loose. Wow! Impressive. This Midnight Manager is still in use today. My next knife will be the Manager. No light but includes tweezers. Thank Me Later POW
you underestimate that little tool and especially the knife. Your macho bullshit with the bigger knife failed to completely understand this tool. This multi-tool is not for self defense. That's not why it was designed.
Great review. I do carry a Midnite Manager as a keychain knife. I disagree with you about the tools. They are surprisingly effective for small tools. Don't use small tools for big, sturdy jobs. I carry a Swiss Champ as my EDC, and that gets more use as a first resort. I agree with you about the torch. I use it to find the keyhole on the door in the dark. Good suggestion about replacing the blade to make it TSA safe. For me, this complements the Swiss Champ as my EDC. It could never substitute, though.
A SAK with nail clippers lives on my keys, it's mostly used for nail care. The knife is not used, however there to be used. I flipped the scales so the tweezers and pick are up in carry.
Victorinox hast so many Tools. Where is the problem ? This very little Midnite tool is =worth for so many works, likewise little screws on PC, or other homeworks. These both little knifes are very sharp and so good for many things in an office for excample. and NOT in the wood.. Here better with "Farmer" or "GAK" or 91er models.. I like my Midnite Minichamp and this bright LED. I like these TOOLS for fine works.. and if I would work at my bike or car.. I would take another tool, but in the city and EDC -so many times- I am happy with this Minichamp, this quality, this steel, .. and Victorinox is a great company with in my opinion "great choice" for everybody to find the right tool for the right work !!! A teeth doctor can not repair your car with his tools.. // and a car mechanic could not repair your teeth with his Tools. So what is the problem??? Minichamp is great - for what it is !!!
I work with a lot of small electronics, and when I don’t have my precision screwdriver set with me, that small Phillips head screwdriver on the Midnite Manager is perfect.
I like the small form factor and functionality; my only complaint is that the pen retractor is made of plastic rather than metal. Otherwise, the entire piece feels very sturdy.
LOL ... You are Complaining about the Flimsy Knife and the Light ... That tool is Light Duty, Everyday Day Carry Keychain tool. It is Enough for the Jobs its intended to do ... Also that weak light is better than no light at all. And Keychain Tools to me are Not your First Line of Utility. I consider those things as backups or last ditch.
I remember going to the movies and cutting free the skirt of a girl that got stuck in the electric stairs. The tool I had inside my little jeans pocket was a Manager Victorinox. ☺️....besides....the tool finishing of the Victorinox Manager is superior to the Leatherman Squirt.
The scissors on the 58mm Vics are better than those on a Squirt too. I tried cutting a thread to sew the other day using my LM Squirt scissors...they couldn't do it. It went between the blades. With my Classic SD no problem whatsoever.
i got a leatherman wave and i love it i dont need anymore of that style of multi tool anymore but to directly compete with the wave what swiss army knife would you recommend?
The Compact has less drivers, but what tools it does have are things you'd actually use (no package opener, no serrated knife). Cheaper, lighter, and slimmer than the Wave, albeit less robust. If you want to keep as many features of the Wave as possible, look at the Huntsman.
I get a kick out of your accent Nick! Where are you from? I've carried a Midnight Manager for years, it's my preferred EDC. I've used it a lot, the only thing that has broken are the red plastic scales, and I sent it back to Victorinox and they repaired it for free. I've used the blade, scissors, Phillips screwdriver, and pen a lot. I have other mini multitools like the Leatherman Micra and the Gerber Dime, but the Midnight Manager is my favorite. Because it makes me feel like a nightclub manager and it even comes with a stripper! Good review!
@@sumwhatparanoid They come with a replacement ink. Lasts a long time. I've had 2 of them over 15 years and only replaced once or twice. However my writing tasks are usually signing something, making a small revision, or filling out a form if in the doctors office with no pen.
Ahh Nick 😂 your videos are always entertaining. I just purchased this recently. I'm always looking for the perfect keychain tool and I've tried many, the Squirt PS4, S4, Micra, PS4, Dime, Classic SD...😢 And they all fall short in one way or another. So I thought I'd give this one a test run. But like you on any given day when I'm working I have a flashlight and pens not to mention a Leathermans' on my belt and a folding knife in my pocket. But I figured on my off days with this on my keys which I always carry at least if I run out the house I have a few tools and a flashlight and pen. But we'll see. So far before this the Victorinox Classic SD was a daily carry because it was so 'unnoticeable'. Forgot it was there and the small knife, file and scissors were useful for minor task. Anyway enjoy your content take care.
Hmm, some of your bad points I cant understand. The blade even if it is small is very sharp and will stay sharp long. I have a Victorinox Classic SD knife for several years and the blade is still sharp. If you didn't read your manual, it is no wonder you can use the ballpen poorly. For proper use you have to extend the knife by pulling out the bottle opener/philips driver. Sometimes reading the manual would protect you from some embarassing moments.. ;) Edit: Just read your comment. On the Victorinox website you find every manual. Never the less a good made review! I am sticking to the Manager without the LED! :)
Hmm, that's open to discussion. It's clearly not Victorinox fault that you couldn't use the ballpen properly, because you haven't had the full product including the manual. Not every product is so intuitive that it can be used without regarding the manual. :) And if some special options in a really sophisticated tool are not that obvious is it a negative point? For that case they added the manual...
That little Phillips is actually pretty good. And it's magnetized, if you didn't know. The bottle opener is pretty annoying, though, if you're gonna be opening a lot of bottles.
Because you don't like nail nicks at all you should check out Swiza's offerings in the Swiss army style of knife. Tested one a couple of months ago and they are really good.
You've been ragging on the victorinox! Personally I love my classic on my keychain, I don't mind the small knife blade and I like it because even if I forget my normal knife, I'll still have one in some form. Maybe check out the Cadet or Pioneer models, those are favorites from victorinox
Nick Shabazz Yeah, maybe try an alox version if you want something more durable, I hear they even have thicker blades and stuff. I can't confirm it though, I have a traditional red plastic one.
Extend the combination tool out and extend the pen out....With the tool out, it gives a better foundation for the use of the pen...especially with the need of longer writing time
I'll stick with my Victorinox sd combined with Energizer push button keychain flashlight. For a small pen I carry a Zebra telescoping pen. I can trim my nails with the sd whereas I don't feel the Manager's screwdriver is worth the money. Also the sd is only $19 Canadian right now (June 2016) and is very light on the keychain. The knife is fine for small packages. For something more solid and small get a Leatherman micra or ps4. My 2 cents.
Excellent review.Be careful. Slotted Screwdriver is not a pry bar. This could easily damage as a pry bar. Could be good In Chicago where self defense is frowned upon. Price OK Lifetime Guarantee.
funny what came to my mind was one time I had a sog key knife (very tiny knife mind you, perhaps not as small but still very small.) and someone looked in shock over such a small blade still. I guess ppl can still flip out when they see a teeny sharp pick such as this or sog key knife lol
I do agree they should have made it without the knife. Then again they have the jetsetter for that i guess. It would be better priced at $10 - $15 as a keychain tool
I like my Midnight Manager, but agree with you on its downsides. I've bent the flathead screwdriver on light-duty tasks before (luckily it's so flimsy that I easily straightened the bend back). I wish the screwdriver was shorter and stronger. If Victorinox added the stout-strong drivers similar to the Gerber Dime, then the Midnight Manager would be much better in my opinion. For lighter-than-light duty tasks, the Midnight Manager excels.
I was considering to buy this but ultimately decided against it and buy the ~9€ cheaper Knife Manager, which discards the light but has otherwise the same functions, and while I was really interested in it the thing that killed it for me was how somebody thought it was a smart idea to have the light on the opposed side as the screwdrivers, which felt like one of the most core reasons to use it.
I think the reason is, that you can write in the dark, when the light is on the pencils side. But still, I got your point. I did not think about that before. Thank you.
the led aligning with the pen so you can write in dark (in a tent or dark environment ) that's why doesn't light the screwdriver... But I aggreged the led seems pointless...
You have to approach this knife for what it actually is. It’s a great handy little tool. You are not going to carve a bull elk out of a tree stump with it.
"And they even include a stripper!" Hahahahahaha you wish hahaha. I got one of those managers coming being gifted to me and im gonna pair it with my gerber dime for a good keychain carry!!
Yea I bought a mini champ it has just a few more features than the midnight manager thinking it would be a great tool based on the thousands of positive reviews on TH-cam but in the end was pretty much a let down I'd rather Carry a full size Swiss tool as a backup blade like the pioneer x alox far better in my opinion.
I carry the Swiss Army classic with a larger EDC blade like my MCusta 121D ,0450 , Benchmade 943 as sometimesa small blade or pair of scissors is the right sized tool for the job . If you strop the small blade with green compound it gets crazy sharp . I agree that the manager is gimmicky and over priced .
I own none of your size comparisons. You could have placed a dinosaur besides it and I wound know as much as I do after your video. Maybe you just should place a ruler at the top of you video.
Yes, for sure the Grasshopper is a superior blade - but does it come with a toothpick and tweezers, eh? ;-)
I Hope everyone clapped
the midnite manager does not have either toothpick nor tweezers.
The pen is easier to use when you open the phillips driver, supports your hand better. Makes it longer.
Hey, neat trick! Thanks for sharing!
Yup, I was just about to suggest that. I always open the nail file when using the pen. :) :)
Yeah, it's also mentionend in the manual....but who reads the manual...
If I got the manual, I totally would :D
@@NickShabazz it is suggested in their official literature.

You did it man i can TH-cam a random knife and be like good nick reviewed that. Keep it coming man!
Love this small guy it's more useful than all leathermans, though mine is the light, pen, and scissors version.
Signature lite
It writes much better when you also open the chisel/flathead, then it fills the hand. Nice review.
What brand of carabiner is that?! I absolutely need one!!!
i can open and service a laptop using the victorinox rambler. its the same as this except without the pen and light.
I work with a lot of small electronics, and when I don’t have my precision screwdriver set with me, that small Phillips head screwdriver on the Midnite Manager is perfect.
What kind of clip/keychain is that? I would like to get one.
Nick was key ring adapter called you showed on midnight manager
*Find the key/keyhole in the dark kind of light.*
Haha this guy is not a swiss army knife fan I'll tell you that😂 SAK FTW! 🇸🇪❤️🇨🇭
I like the small form factor and functionality; my only complaint is that the pen retractor is made of plastic rather than metal. Otherwise, the entire piece feels very sturdy.
what is that hook called on ur knife to hang it on a keyring or something ?
Is this knife bigger than a chapstick? Or about the same size?
I didn't know Christopher Walken did knife reviews :)
07thunderhawk I'm guessing you've never actually heard Christopher Walken talk.
Philips screwdriver is the right right size for a lot of electronics goods
How does it compare to the usualvictorinox manager? I'm about to decide wich one to buy for my keychain.
a fair review. not a bad stocking stuffer for non-prepper family or friends though
Fair points but I also think his complaints are aimed towards the point of view of his normal knife-nut audience rather than a true neural review.
Hey Nick, what tool should replace the Midnite Manager's knife?
Can anyone direct me towards that Thrunite flashlight that he showed in the size comparison?
Do you recommed this as a keychain or know a better alternative? I'm looking for a small multitool something like this size.
i got a leatherman wave and i love it i dont need anymore of that style of multi tool anymore but to directly compete with the wave what swiss army knife would you recommend?
Good review!
has the ink ever run out on you? also wondering if id be able to replace the pen if it came to that
@@sumwhatparanoid They come with a replacement ink. Lasts a long time. I've had 2 of them over 15 years and only replaced once or twice. However my writing tasks are usually signing something, making a small revision, or filling out a form if in the doctors office with no pen.
All you do is pull out the pen with your fingers and pop a new one in. It has a detent on it. Doesn't get any easier than that.
@@Xenogy1 appreciate the informative reply!
Nick ... You are over thinking it ... It's a great spur of the moment tool ... I prefer the Rambler ...
have you tyed the leatherman surge?
Sometimes reading the manual would protect you from some embarassing moments.. ;)
Edit:
Just read your comment. On the Victorinox website you find every manual.
Never the less a good made review! I am sticking to the Manager without the LED! :)
+Commander Cool Remember, loaned gear doesn't always come with a manual. And if a product is unintuitive, who should be embarrassed? :)
Hmm, that's open to discussion.
It's clearly not Victorinox fault that you couldn't use the ballpen properly, because you haven't had the full product including the manual. Not every product is so intuitive that it can be used without regarding the manual. :)
And if some special options in a really sophisticated tool are not that obvious is it a negative point? For that case they added the manual...
That little Phillips is actually pretty good. And it's magnetized, if you didn't know. The bottle opener is pretty annoying, though, if you're gonna be opening a lot of bottles.
Could you make a video saying, " You'll never catch me alive, copper! Nya see? Nya!"
This comment is sooooo underrated!!! Just read it and can't stop laughing!!! Spot on!
Interested where did you buy that carry clip?
Roberto Marin true utility
I think you really dislike Victorinox. Lol. I love Victorinox. I have a small one on me most of the time. Wait a minute, that sounded bad. Lol
Bigger Vics are OK, but these tiny guys just don't make sense to me! And lol. Yeah, context.
I love little guys because they can't kill anyone
Oh! Weah reviewin knifes ovah heah!
Because you don't like nail nicks at all you should check out Swiza's offerings in the Swiss army style of knife. Tested one a couple of months ago and they are really good.
I love the update, and can't wait for them to move past the Baby's First Knife industrial design.
You've been ragging on the victorinox! Personally I love my classic on my keychain, I don't mind the small knife blade and I like it because even if I forget my normal knife, I'll still have one in some form. Maybe check out the Cadet or Pioneer models, those are favorites from victorinox
Bigger Vics are OK, but these tiny guys just don't make sense to me!
Nick Shabazz Yeah, maybe try an alox version if you want something more durable, I hear they even have thicker blades and stuff. I can't confirm it though, I have a traditional red plastic one.
If you extend the file, then there's more area and using the pen is easier.
My 2 cents.
It is not meant to be the tool of the century !
For goodness sake, get a life.
The Manager is on my keyring and has served me well over the year ! 😅
Tu peux ouvrir un élément du couteau pour allonger le stylo.
I guess ppl can still flip out when they see a teeny sharp pick such as this or sog key knife lol
what's the king of Battery?
"midnight manager Nick" sounds great! ;)
The blade is very useful
I do agree they should have made it without the knife. Then again they have the jetsetter for that i guess. It would be better priced at $10 - $15 as a keychain tool
I have one and it makes fantastic sense.
I use it everyday and truly love. 🧡🧡✍️👨🎓
Ugh, lost my Thrunite just like the one in this video...made me nostalgic
Flip open the nail file when wrighting .
He sounds like Kripke from Big Bang Theory
Nice Nick 0452 and the Swiss knife as a comparison haha but I do know the size now 👍
Sorry for my bad English.. I am German.. and hope everybody could "understand" what I thought and I hope it was NOT respectless !!!
I think it was originally made by Wenger. I could be wrong. Probably am.
Midnight manger has got a stripper 😂
Made me laugh - great review thanks :)
Choose the Victorinox Escort to be your inconspicuous partner😮
I carry the Swiss Army classic with a larger EDC blade like my MCusta 121D ,0450 , Benchmade 943 as sometimesa small blade or pair of scissors is the right sized tool for the job . If you strop the small blade with green compound it gets crazy sharp . I agree that the manager is gimmicky and over priced .
I own none of your size comparisons. You could have placed a dinosaur besides it and I wound know as much as I do after your video.
Maybe you just should place a ruler at the top of you video.
They even include a stripper 😂😂
Can I pull out my benchmade arvensis instead lol
It's overpriced. The light doubles the price. Better to get the standard manager and a dedicated light.....like I've just done 😆
