Timaru - The Seaside City with Little Blue Penguins | Canterbury, New Zealand

- Timaru is the second largest city in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. It's located about midway between Christchurch and Dunedin, and it's also a convenient stop over on the way to Mt Cook. We stayed in Timaru for 2 nights with the main intention of hoping to see little blue penguins (the world's smallest penguins) who have a colony at Caroline Bay.
We travelled to Timaru from Akaroa and our first stop after the 3 hour journey was to have some lunch. We were craving Indian cuisine and thankfully came across a Punjab Indian restaurant in Timaru's city centre that had friendly service and great food.

We learnt from our friend @LanaTiare that you could see little blue penguins (kororā) in Timaru. The best month to see the little blue penguins in Timaru is apparently November though so we were pretty lucky to spot the two that we did at Marine Parade over at Caroline Bay. They return ashore a after a long day out in the sea (usually after it gets dark) so dress warmly and wait quietly and patiently on the footpath.

I honestly admire all the work you guys put into all your vlogs and content. The amount of planning for each destination, activities to plan through each trip, air bnb, food locations, then researching about the locations, filming, editing, content creating and getting back to comments.. and then taking time off camera to soak in all the work you guys have done.. The air bnb looks so cosy, it must be so nice to have those fresh peaches outside. Wow you guys got so lucky to get so close to the penguins 😃they don't seem to be too bothered by people
😅 they're really shy lil fellas though especially when they're closer to nest. These ones might be a lil more used to seeing people.
My goodness two fave Indian food: butter chicken & tikka masala with rice then mango lassi 🤩 best food to start the day!
It was so good every once in a while have to get the butter chicken hit hahaha

You both always get the comfiest airbnb, has everything in it. Having washing machine is a plus in an accommodation , very useful. Something we can’t get from hotel 👌🏻
Oh my goodness.. like you wouldn't believe hahaha 😂 we were so glad it was yum too! Yea if we do longer trips we always try fit in an accommodation that has laundry. Just so much more convenient that way! 🙂👍

This little penguins remind us of Philip Island in Victoria, not far from Melbourne. It was sooo cold and you have to be patient & quite but well worth it, they are super adorable 🤩😍

It was a really reasonable price by NZ standards! We were stoked with that given the food was great too 🙂 NZ hospitality is amazing. We're so often blown away by the kindness and treats that hosts leave for guests! Yeaaa we miss Lana's videos too.. I think she does more on TikTok now.
Long time since I've been to Timaru ~ born there in '53 when my parents were farming up in the totara valley . Another great video Peter and Yen .

Hi both, love the music at the beginning. It’s so soothing esp. with all the heart-wrenching news of the ongoing invasion. The butter-chicken and masala looks so yummy 😋. We unfortunately didn't end up making those pancakes! 🥞 I think we maximized sleeping in instead the next morning 🤣 Timaru was lovely.. such a beautiful sky that changed all the way through 🌅🐧 The penguins were just the cutest little fellas 🥰🥰

Is it just me or have the both of you been hitting the gym a lot lately? You both look shredded in this video! Also that area where they normally have the carnival looks very Caribbean, reminds me of my home Islands of Trinidad & Tobago, the food looked amazing as well, I think I'm starting to fall more and more in love with the Christchurch area thanks to you two!

I love butter chicken. I only eat nan and curry and lot of sauce and less meat 🤣. My favourite Indian restaurant is Priya in Hokitika, we dined there twice and their chai latte is next level. We did penguins viewing in Tasmania too, twice. However, the area has no streetlights, we can only see with our eyes and cannot film it. They also called fairy penguins, so cuuuuute 😍.
That sounds so cool! As a kid watching national geographic you think that penguins are everywhere in giant colonies... in reality that is far from the truth 😅

A really lovely video and thank you for sharing with everyone. Timaru is where i live so get to see Caroline bay lots ..... I was pleased you mentioned about the Penguins and not using flashes ( although there is always some who try sadly ) One other thing will mention is that the Little Blue Penguin is a totally protected species... which means you can look BUT DO NOT touch or hinder in anyway. In other words it is illegal to try and pick them up or interfere with them. For someone who has a disability, do not think you cannot see them. If you park near where the penguin sign is and are quiet chances are you will get the opportunity to see one from the car (another place to park is down the end of Marine parade but do not go around the corner as there is more around that area as well and you can quite often see them. The Rose Garden is lovely but there is also two other areas. 1 is the Botanic Gardens which is south end of Timaru and then there is the Reserve which is West Timaru.. Those stairs you looked at by the rose garden light up at night time and look really lovely :)
That's why yen originally was attracted to the stairs because they were nicely lit up at night. Thanks for all the additional information it'll be really helpful for people wanting to see the penguins 🐧 🤙

You are so sharp with your observations! Yes the meal was definitely on the more affordable end. $12 for each of the curries. $4 for the pain Naan and $6 for the paneer I think. Ahhh this trip was one of the best we've had and it still gets better from here 😉

And another place I have not been! Ah Indian food best fusion cuisine food on the planet! If you want hot curries, find a South Indian restaurant as South Indian chilli's are hotter than north Indian! Hey looks nice accommodation there! How cool is it to see those penguins! Always great to wander around gardens, I know you have often done gardens and so relaxing! yeah we can guess why it was cancelled! Another fine job!

I've only ever seen one penguin in NZ, up in the Bay of Islands, despite stopping over in Oamaru twice in the United m hopes of seeing them there.

O you're lucky to see one too rob... We've learnt that they're pretty shy little fellas. We heard that if you go during the right season in Oamaru you can see a lot of em.

Why spend so much time on the room and not drive trhough the streets instead. Walk through the main street a little....Show the atmosphere of the place, parts that are unlike about the place....architecture, small cosy corners, more of food places...
