Nice tip for the Linux command line:
When typing filenames (of files that already exist) or package names, you can type just the first few characters and then hit the TAB key.
If it can work out what you're trying to type - as there's only one filename / package name that you could mean - then it'll auto-complete it for you. If it's ambiguous - more than one file / package could match what you've typed so far - then you can hold TAB and it'll show a list of matches. Type a few more characters, until it's unique and it knows what you want, then hit TAB to auto-complete it.
This not only speeds up typing commands, but it means you don't have to get filenames and packages exactly right. Just the first few characters and hit TAB for auto-complete.
So you could have typed, say, "sudo apt install choc" and then hit TAB. If "chocolate-doom" is the only package that fits "choc*" then it'll just auto-complete it. If there's a few packages that starts "choc" then holding TAB will give you a list of the matches - type enough to make it unique, so the command line understands which one you mean, and it'll then auto-complete.
(Particularly with "apt", as there's an awful lot of packages, if the list of matches is a bit on the ginormous side - like, try "lib" and hit TAB, as there's tons of library packages that start with "lib" - then it'll rather say "list all 158 possibilities (y / n)?" and you hit "y" to see the list. This is just because, you know, the list of matches could be truly massive, so it does have a built-in "are you sure?" and paging for very long lists.)
The command line also has a history too. If you press up arrow then it'll step back in the command history (and down arrow, as you might guess, does the opposite and steps forward in the command history), so if you've typed it before, then you can call it back up. Very useful if you just made a small typo - up arrow to get the last command back again and then edit it to what it should have been then hit Enter.
The TAB auto-complete and history feature can make using the command line a bit faster and more convenient.

      Also, interesting fact.
DOOM originally used the arrow keys, rather than WASD, to control the character. While this might feel a bit awkward for a right-handed person - as you've got to reach over with your left hand for the arrow keys on most PC keyboards - John Carmack, who coded DOOM, is left handed.
So, for him, with his mouse on the left side of him, and arrow keys under his right hand, this was perfectly natural and that's how he coded it.
But, yeah, most modern games prefer the "WASD" keys instead, these days, because most people are right-handed. Although, the best games account for both righties and South paws alike, by allowing either "WASD" or arrow keys (or, you know, just provide a "define keys" options screen to set it how you like).
So, in fairness to LadyFractic, John Carmack's default layout is actually a left-handed layout and that is a bit awkward for right-handers.

    • @BubbaBearsFriend
      @BubbaBearsFriend 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@klaxoncow Actually controlling movement with the arrow keys in Doom can be right handed since in the early days, I didn't use mouse for doom, and used the left hand to control left/right strafe using the comma and period keys. Remember doom did not have a concept of aiming up or down, just side to side, so the extra control to aim with the mouse wasn't as necessary. It was only when Quake came out that up and down aiming became possible/needed.

Thank you for showing us that with hard work and perseverance, you too can run the shareware version of Doom on an 8-inch screen! Jokes aside, thank you for a super entertaining & informative build series. Looking forward to what's next, maybe a demonstration of the Gameboy sewing machine?

Ordered the same colour (silver) today. I try to print the pins and monitor parts this evening, I think there's just enough for that. Then the three other big parts. I'm not very experienced in 3D- printing, but I'm stunned of the results on my Creality Ender 3D Pro. I like the videos of both of you, certainly the ones about Knightrider. I imagine I'm not the first person to say this, but the "-y" at the end of that apt command is a flag that allows you to skip all the y/n questions that may be asked, and just answers "y" for everything. If you had put a space between "chocolate-doom" and "-y" it would've run the same, just without asking you any questions.

We discovered a hidden option in the monitor itself for rotate.

"Fractic" is the opposite of how I would describe Perry's disposition.

Remember. Original Doom didn't allow the player to look/aim up and down, nor jump, so WASD controls wasn't a thing yet for first person shooters when Doom was new in the mid 90s. You can rebind keys to do that.

Sometimes it can be useful to put the cable tie through the sticky pad holes before you put the sticky pad onto whatever surface you are sticking it to.
    Good job though. :)

Great video! I have a suggestion for you. I have built a number of retro systems using various models of Raspberry Pi computers and different monitors, keyboards, controllers, etc. One thing that I always do that helps is to bench test the components before installing them into the case. It will help you to identify any hardware or compatibility issues in advance. It is also easier to change your screen orientation if needed.

nailed it fantastic world we live in you can print your own case and there's components like the screen and keyboard you virtually have a pc which looks retro but is completly capable of being up to date and compact using raspberry pi and your not limited to any os or functions. by the change of os it could be media viewer or office use it gaming and retro gaming. and its rgb

I thought when the banana-for-scale was produced we'd get the "Benny Hill" theme again ;) The only trouble with classic games (esp Doom) is that you concentrate so hard you forget to blink, hence the blight of dry-eye syndrome amongst us Retro gamers lol Loved the vid - long live retro! :)

It's hardly surprising that the keyboard worked straight away, while the monitor was causing trouble. Nothing stands in the way of Dierya! Whoops, just got to the bit where the keyboard didn't work...I suppose another diarrhoea joke is needed! The Doom section reminded me of times when I've watched my brother play FPS's, and of how frustrating it can be for both involved :) PeriFractic pronounces "lever" quite oddly @38:57; I would blame being in the USA for too long but I don't think they, or anyone else, uses that pronunciation :) Must be down to computer troubleshooting stress!

But it was such a stressful episode.

Just had a YT suggestion for your video - was looking round your room! On your tables I spot an Apple II, atari 400, atari 2600, BBC model B with what looks like an original monitor , Original mac. and some randomness like the amiga mouse, c64 tape unit and stuff. Probably should be working rather than looking at your video!

FYI pigeonos is a virtual machine. The raspberry pi 4 does not have hardware virtualization and it has an ARM cpu. Not trying to be rude but try an x86-64 cpu in the case. An intel core i3 12th gen would be a lot more power and a cool sleeper pc. Would love to see that upgrade in a video further down the road.
