I can’t believe how hard he hits, with EXTREME accuracy & precision. Amazing. No hiccups, no deviations, completely perfect on all levels. He IS the greatest rock drummer to ever live.
The thing is that he always HATED the "greatest drummer" stuff. He was great for Rush and that's all he wanted. There were many drummers that he thought...that he KNEW...were way better in terms of skills, abilities, and style. He had zero ego when it came to drumming. You might say that he was a way better drummer than Ringo. But he would say that Ringo was EXACTLY the best drummer for the Beatles. Same with time-keeping pocket drummers like Charlie Watts and Phil Rudd. They would have sucked in Rush but Neil felt that they were perfect for the Stones and AC/DC. Drummers Neil felt were much, much better...guys that he put on his pedestal...were Omar Hakim, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Danny Carey, Vinnie Colaiuta, and of course contemporaries like Buddy, Krupa, and Bellson. He was also good friends with Mike Portnoy, another HUGE stalwart in progressive rock drumming. That said, he was a giant in rock drumming and a huge inspiration to tens of thousands of musicians and will be sorely missed. RIP, sir Neil!!
@@foskco87 Rush has a treasure trove of powerful songs. Problem is, in this era, the only thing you ever hear on radio or satellite is Tom Sawyer, Limelight and on rare occasion, Spirit of the radio and fly by night. Rush has won new fans, but they will never know what rush has done unless they get the albums. Not like back in the day when you'd hear all kinds of rush cuts or see videos on MTV.
I was at this clinic! A rare clinic as he barely ever did drum clinics! He signed a poster they were handing out at the clinic! It’s a treasure dear to my heart! Rip professor!
An instructional video of how to play Roll the Bones while your sunglasses are slipping down your nose... and not miss a beat... Seriously, awesome video! Can't wait to check out parts 2 and 3. Oh, what a great tour that was, and love the dice hanging around on Neil's kit... Roll the Bones!!!
What I love are the ages of the people in the audience. All aspiring drummers, learning from the man who has won more awards from Modern Drummer Magazine than any drummer alive.
Jeff these Neil P. "1992 clinic clips" are absolutely fantastic!!!!.......Never knew at that time he even did a clinic type arrangement/gathering?.....Absolutely wonderful that you uploaded these!....SO cool to hear Neil in THIS format back in 92'....... Thanks Jeff for this great sharing/contribution for many to enjoy the awesome memories of Neil/Rush.
He became such a different person socially post the 1997 tragedies. Rightly so, he didn’t want any inquiries or questions about those tragedies and became more shy of the public.
The flight path of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station (now closed) flies right over Irvine Meadows! I bet that F 18 pilot could hear Neil! Can't believe he is gone. Such a gentleman that had a mind unlike any other drummer.
You have been playing for 40 years and haven't been influenced by the most influential drummer in the history of rock? Peart's stuff is where I STARTED.
About the airplanes......John Wayne Airport is actually ten miles from Irvine Meadows. You'd be surprised by the amount of venues (see Phoenix) that are close to an even busier airport. The Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, which Rush has played at many times, is located even closer to the airport (3 miles). Oddly enough, the airport never was an issue at any of the shows I attended as a kid....but afternoon drum clinics, apparently a different story. BTW - Irvine Meadows did close down in 2016. Acts now do their Orange County shows at the Honda Center in Anaheim (indoor arena) or the previously mentioned Pacific Amphitheater (if the artist wants an outdoor venue).
Matt Smith- Matt, I appreciate your sharing this relevant geographic info. It adds space, texture and a broader awareness to the 3-dimensional mental image of those historic shows at those venues. Tho, I admit that during the RUSH concerts I was so lucky to attend I lost all awareness of everything that wasn’t part of the show. Totally immersed.
hey JEFF...thanks for that post.not sure all the PDF'ers are aware that you posted the 3 parts of that clinic you attended on the tube. hope you still play that incredible red masterwork..
Thanx man! I do still play it! Matter of fact, its to my left as I type this in a NEW drum room. We moved into a new house - oddly enough on Jan 7, 2020, the day of Neil's passing. The world didn't learn of it til that Friday, Jan 10. It's been a whirlwind since we moved and while everything is set up and ready to record something, I just haven't had the time to do it yet. But I believe my first video in the new place will be Tom Sawyer b/c Neil was my #1 for the first several years of my playing and also that I moved into the new room the day he passed.
those 2 small toms does anyone know the year they were made? I have the 80s rocker kit, and had the 6"8"10"12 open bottom, but I went on ebay and found a 8" 10" double headed tom, but they are deeper then those 2 on neils kit. They are an 8x9 and a 10X9 kind of deep and I didn't realize ludwig made them less deep! those on neils kit looked like a 8x7 10x7 don't know they made them that size.
How do you sit there, like the fella chewing gum, with a blunted affect, like you 'ain't impressed' while getting this amazing oppertunity.....at least smile at the dude....HE'S NEAL PEART GOOD GOD! HAHAHAHA
yes, part 2 is processing right now and then i'll upload part 3. i'm also uploading the full 78 minutes right now too, its at 28% and is taking awhile.
My drumming wasn't influenced by Peart(directly),All of my favorite drummers were!I wasn't even exposed to Rush in the 70's.!Early on,I always wondered HOW my Fave drummers came up with such awesome/clever licks?...PEART!!
Damn. He beats the SHIT out of those Ludwigs. I knew he was bombastic during a concert because he has the crowd cheering him on but in an intimate situation such as this you'd think playing wide open and loud would be on the back burner but not with Neil. He ALWAYS beats the shit out of his drums. But musically of course.
Good observation. He said in an interview about recording videos about how you play to a track and basically fake it for the cameras, which is total bullshit to him, so he just always plays full out.I have to say, I've never heard his drums with zero reverb. So flat, and man does he play so differently now.
@@MrRezRising Yes he definitely did change. Everything. I loved his Ludwigs much better than his DW kits (with the exception of his Snakes and Arrows kit; maybe) because they have a wide tonality range. From his 6" all the way down to his 22" Gong Bass Drum. His DW’s were beautifully crafted but I just don’t care for their sound. His suspended 18" floor tom didn’t come close to the lower register of his gong bass drum.

Amen
Bonham could never have thought up ANY of these licks, electronic contraptions etc,in 5 lifetimes!!Peart is the G-O-A-T.(Rock).
"Time stand still" is Rush's most emotionally effective and resonant song for me. Very powerful.
The Pass is another very powerful song that is not as well known

that's awesome! A rare treat indeed!
This was my favorite eea of tone from Neil. The throaty and raw attack of those drums, especially those small toms were magical.
It's cool to hear him play with just raw drums and not mic'd.
Rip Neil
This is pure gold. The fella was a machine and a beast in his prime.
The fella was a machine and a beast all the way to the end you mean.
And what a privilege to be there

What must it have been like to sit THAT close to him playing? I would have glided through the air when it was over.
20:09. Sweet mullet!

Everything he wrote was of amazing grace and beauty. And if there is a God, her beauty was exposed enormously in our beloved Neil.

Who else just stares at his feet the entire time he’s playing. His left foot is a lot busier then I imagined.
