I majored in Applied Physics at VCU . We had a Professor that both looked and sounded like Neil Peart. He helped us understand complex topics much the same way Neil Peart does . Neil Peart should have been given an honorary doctorate . He was truly a Professor in the most fundamental and important way . When Neil Peart spoke , everyone listened . So sad that we lost him .😥
It helps that it was a private event. Being televised and wish a dozen flashing cameras, not evenyone does well with that. I know once his wife and daughter had died, he was completely locked away from being seen off stage because of everyone asking about the tragic events. In recent years since he's married again and had another kid, he surprisingly appeared on TV a few times.
I think for what I read and saw in some documentaries and interviews that he was actually an open guy. Is just that he was freaked out by the fans that came like " ON my GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 you are Neil Fuckin Peart,,, TOM SAWYER MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!, you are the GOD!!!!! you are my hero!!!!" I think ( I could be wrong of course) that if you came there with calm in a moment he wanst reading or something and you casually say like.. "Hey you seems to me like a guy who loves AY Rand... what do you think of her?" I think he will be open to talk about it.... or about any topic.... I think he would have been a nice conversational buddy on a bar.... RIP Professor
Neil was always uncomfortable with adoration. Get him talking about his art and passion and he’ll go above and beyond anyone’s level and for hours. As complex as he was, he was truly a professor in the sense he could make complex topics understandable to anyone who is interested in listening. If you asked the average person “what is common about a horse and cow?”, they are likely to give a simplistic answer like “they both have four legs and live on farms.” Neil Peart would likely answer “metaphysically and historically, horses are utilized by mankind for work and transportation and even battle where cows served mankind by providing food and sustenance as well as benefits to the local ecology by…”. The man just thinks on a higher plane. He read a lot too.
As a bass player for 45 years no one taught me more...about rythmn, timing, and percussive melody....very much appreciate the upload, a very rare and fun perspective rarely seen ....the professor....RIP....sigh
Cracks me up... something about the nature of the questions, what is asked, how it is asked... transports me back to that time before the wealth of knowledge we now call the Internet (at least as we know it today). And his responses seem so banal and obvious, but at the time they were novel... and everyone wondered.
I was lucky enough to attend his very first clinic. That was in Ft Wayne, IN - 1987, if I remember correctly - and I just happened to be working at The Percussion Center then, too. I got to meet him (briefly!) but did have a nice conversation with Larry Allen, his tech at the time. That was the weekend he stayed at my boss's house and picked his new kit for Hold Your Fire (his first set of Ludwigs).
I too had a great teacher in the beginning....it all starts with how to hold the sticks! When I learned double paradiddles it all took off from there! Love you Neil. Thanks for your patience. Be at peace.
So Neil playing live & on the album's is at a superhuman level ,one that makes me feel a lot better that he couldn't just sit down and play like that. He would have to warm up and get his chops going being a right-handed drummer can't keep that left hand stagnant. So that sits well with me. And I started to think of how many things I can put in the frontal cortex of my brain. how many things at one time could i think about and I can only think of six things at one time. And sticking in the dark closing your eyes and playing. that seems like a healthy way to pinpoint accuracy. Thanks Neil for ur genius, drumming and left and right hemispheres. And don't think about what you're playing....or u will fall apart. just think ahead ; futuristic drumming!!!!🤙 re-examine rehearse and repeat your drum parts. So Neil would get stumped he would get frustrated trying to figure out parts for songs so he is Human After All. I mean I thought he was an Android all these years. Did they program to play drums. But he's a delicate organism just like anyone else. He has feelings. I saw Neil during roll the bones and I didn't get a drum Clinic but I got to see Primus open up for Rush....so it worked itself out. God bless you and may you rest in peace..... professor. I just wish I could have gotten this information when I was in my teens when I saw them during this album if I would have known this half the information he gave me on here I would have been a much more comfortable drummer behind the kit. He is an absolute well of knowledge. I mean he truly could have been a professor of Education as opposed to being the professor on the drum kit. Rip
Thank you so much! I think this shows more of the real dude. Contrary to the interviews and instructional videos. He seems very happy to just hang with some drummers!

“You have to re-examine what you’ve done and get away from it” basically try something new. That’s part of the genius that was Neil Peart. The only thing he kept was that infamous ride pattern. But even then it’s basically just a double paradiddle. This footage is gold. But I wonder why he did this when he always said he wasn’t comfortable doing this sort of thing.
the only drum clinic where jung is referenced i think its important to recognize that if it wasn't for neil peart A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD BE MUCH DUMBER THAN THEY ARE TODAY and we sure as hell dont need more dumb than we already got
About the airplanes......John Wayne Airport is actually ten miles from Irvine Meadows. You'd be surprised by the amount of venues (see Phoenix) that are close to an even busier airport. The Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, which Rush has played at many times, is located even closer to the airport (3 miles). Oddly enough, the airport never was an issue at any of the shows I attended as a kid....but afternoon drum clinics, apparently a different story. BTW - Irvine Meadows did close down in 2016. Acts now do their Orange County shows at the Honda Center in Anaheim (indoor arena) or the previously mentioned Pacific Amphitheater (if the artist wants an outdoor venue).
Damn...where's a SAM battery when you need it!. Honestly, who builds a concert arena next to an airport?. Or better yet, an airport next to an concert arena? The professor is a patient gracious man indeed!
When you watch him play and understand the technicality of it plus hear him talk openly you realize this guy is quantum leaps above mediocrity. The same is true of Stuart Copeland.
If you think he was irritated by the jets flying over, how do you think the residence of laguna beach, irvine, and lake forrest felt, for years. Eventually, they closed the El Toro air base, then almost 22 years later, they closed Irvine meadows.
If you been playing drums long enough you just know what's going to happen next I've actually thought about what I was going to do the second I was doing it and I mess up every time it's weird it's just built in
you could look at it in a different way, i remember neil peart talking about his friends in KISS, and what e learned from them good and bad now, you may know in the seventies KISS got HUGE , VERY VERY HUGE, and neil talked about how peter criss interacting with adoring fans got kinda warped and weird and ego tripping hard, began believing that he was great and ended up just going over the "fame cliff" became addicted to drugs and all kinds of other destructive behaviors, eventually destroying his ability to play. peter criss today is considered by drummers to be just pure crap, but in actuality in the mid seventies he was one of the best. i think neils attitude with fans his him just protecting himself from his own ego, he often described that he was possessed of a lot of pride, his pride in his work made him great but he also called his pride "dangerous" so you can look at it as neil dissing fans or you can look at as neil protecting himself from the kinda thing that wrecked peter
"I practice to my own records because that's me at a super human level and it's better than I can really play." Hmm. let my try and figure that one out...Never mind...
RodneyLee It's absolutely true though.. He doesn't sit there and play the entire song from start to finish while recording..There will be sectioned bits that he may play many times to get exactly what he wants .. The final product may be a collage of sections each played to it's potential whereas the the song played from beginning to end in a linear fashion in one take may have parts that aren't quite as authoritative leading in or out to the next part..The recording will never miss a beat or be in a bad mood or get distracted like a live musician, it will always be at top notch and exceptional !
It's SO SAD he was public and camera shy, in which I donot blame him people are idiots, he answers ALL the Q's asked and has SO MUCH info for any level drummer to share. Often I am asked How did u get to play so good? PRACTICE! Nothing replaces HOURS on ur stool and play to EVERYTHING! Just great info for anyone. U will NEVER get there without putin in the TIME! RIP NP
Too bad he'd never even consider availing himself in this way today. Actually, this is the only "clinic" he's ever done, that I'm aware of. He really just can't deal with interacting with fans at all. Of course, if you're a drummer who happens to be a celebrity, Taylor Hawkins, for example (whose every other uttered word is "fuck") - He'll talk to you all day long. Maybe even be your buddy. But if you're a nameless, faceless pauper who may love drums and music to a high degree- forget about talking or interacting in any way with Neil- even if it's a quick "thanks for the influence of your art on my life". He's having none of that.
I was always bummed when I heard he was like that. My only "connections" with him were when he answered an "Ask a Pro" question in MD in the May 1983 issue and MD published my transcription of "Where's My Thing" in 1992/3.
There's always someone who has to be a smart butt. Yes there is a time and place for both speaking to your audience and playing. Mostly he doesn't speak when he is performing, right! I use to read articles about him or hear things from other people. He is a very interesting drummer/person. Its great to hear him speak and his own language. Being a drummer, I want to know what he's thinking. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't of been the drummer I am today.

So how was the first part relevant at all lol so dumb
For a guy who is so reluctant to engage in public, he's open and conversational here. Seems to enjoy talking about his craft.
yeah, he really does. and did it well!

Well he was probably making bank by putting on the clinic and he’s a professional, so you pay for and get professionalism.
Neil was always uncomfortable with adoration. Get him talking about his art and passion and he’ll go above and beyond anyone’s level and for hours. As complex as he was, he was truly a professor in the sense he could make complex topics understandable to anyone who is interested in listening.

One of the most accomplished rock musicians and yet he is just as engaging speaking as when performing.
He really is a joy to listen too
Im the guy on the interview at the end, Can't believe its been 31 years ago!
right on! we've chatted in one of the Neil FB groups... right?
@@JeffWald Yes !
Carl Jung references during a drum clinic - yet another reason why the Professor is the best.
The most awesome Neil Peart videos on TH-cam . . . . period !!
Very intelligent and very awesome awesome human being..... much love and respect to Neil Peart

amen brother. glad you enjoyed it
He was the consummate professional and a genuine human being . A gift to all who knew of him. A part of me has died with him.
2:00 “Willpower take you beyond the realm and discipline demands it”....he could put this in a song!
Such a profoundly talented, intelligent, creative and disciplined genius!

Even at the clinic he leaves the stage in 3 seconds! lol
I had NO IDEA Peart had had clinics. Extremely rare footage, thanks for the upload!
you bet!
I don't think he did another one after this. It was probably pretty hard to basically play 'two' shows in a day.
I was lucky enough to attend his very first clinic. That was in Ft Wayne, IN - 1987, if I remember correctly - and I just happened to be working at The Percussion Center then, too. Just wow!
4 bars ahead in his brain. Says it all . Staying 4 notes ahead is a challenge. 4 bars ahead !! That's like 10 or more seconds . Superhuman.
I'm exhausted just trying to keep up with listening to him.
RIP NEIL.
The professor's styles and technical abilities inspire me to push forward with the building of my kit and skill. The concert live in Rio was awesome!
he seems beautifully engaged. christ, 92!! where did all the years go?
milkminotaur I really enjoyed how he interacted with everyone
great documentation of a legend in his prime....thanks for the upload.
you bet!
I cant even imagine how much this would fetch if he continued to do this on later tours
I too had a great teacher in the beginning....it all starts with how to hold the sticks! When I learned double paradiddles it all took off from there! Love you Neil. Thanks for your patience. Be at peace.
He actually used the word “hypercard” in a normal conversation with someone lmao. He was a trip.
I love this man
Thank you so much for uploading.

He plays to his album because on the album he’s playing at an unhuman level. Sounds about right
I had a drum lesson from carmine appice once, then the rest was watching this guy!
I love that Neil had a Tama tom holder on the Luddie kit.
Thank you so much! I think this shows more of the real dude. Contrary to the interviews and instructional videos. He seems very happy to just hang with some drummers!
Thanks for posting this, really great to see, I enjoyed it.

this might be the most personable I think I've ever seen him be with strangers, must have been a special group
Mr Peart is very talkative.
He IS The Professor, after all.

Not to mention the El Toro air base even closer than John Wayne.
@@ykmgeedee yeah those were all military jets doing touch and go’s, they used to do that all this time.

When you watch him play and understand the technicality of it plus hear him talk openly you realize this guy is quantum leaps above mediocrity. The same is true of Stuart Copeland.

Why does he remind me of forest gump?
Good grief! Neil’s brain didn’t have an off switch! Always thinking!👨🏻🎓

Thats mike portnoy keeps flying over
If only his mic had picked up air traffic control - that's called a full Spinal!
Was this shot at an air base during ww2? Jesus christ there is an entire battalion of jets taking off.
It's great that Neil did this drum clinic but it was probably the worst location possible.
