One of the best scenes of all times combining music and acting, from a movie that is an absolute masterpiece. Who else could have invited "The Feelies" to play "Fame" on it? Jonathan Demme!! He will never be forgotten.
Ray Liotta is really good but the last 15 minutes of the film goes way over the top. He goes from charismatic creepy to outright Jason Voorhees by the end.
One of the most captivating films I have ever watched. Sadly, it also seems to be one of the least known and least watched film too. Great story line, great acting, great music... I am 74 years old and this movie rates somewhere up among the my all time top 5!
Demme really had the sense to recognize that The Feelies were an almost impossibly amazing timestamp for the era but also that they could conceivably portray the kind of group that would be performing at a high school reunion. One of the most cinematically successful partnerships in film.
@thomasvanner: There are three songs in the clip. The first song is Crazy Rhythms; which then segues into Fame, and afterwards is the ramp-up opening of Loveless Love. Both tracks are originals from the Crazy Rhythms album, one of the best albums of 1980.
I love The Feelies, definitely one of the best bands in many a year. On my top ten list of all time favorite bands. I saw this film so long ago, that I had no idea Jonathan Demme had one of my favorite bands playing live in it, must be before I even knew who they were. Although I think it was in '86 was when I discovered their Twin/Tone recordings. Yeah, Jonathan Demme always had that great taste in music. Thanks for posting this and making me aware of this rare live appearance of The Feelies. I saw them live at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle in 1989 as the opening act for Lou Reed. What a show that was!!
Love this film for many reasons. The Feelies appearance is one of the reasons. The Bowie cover is awesome for it's quirkiness. After that song the Feelies start another song - one of their's with a cool build that starts to change the mood. Right on cue, Ray Liotta steps into this film and changes the whole tone. Thank you Mr. Demme for that great film work. Feelies rule...!!
This is 3:31 of movie perfection and one of the best scenes in any film I've ever seen. It's scary how authentic the whole reunion scene is (the mini Uncle Sam hats) - even down to Melanie Griffith looking terrific but being a terrible dancer. The camera-on-the-move is hypnotic, right down to reeling in the sinister villain who spins into view at the end.
Demme's zenith remains this film. The soundtrack is incredible. Still remember seeing it on the big screen. Ray is one of the great antagonists of the modern era. And the soundtrack; Laurie Anderson, Jean Michel Jarre, Oingo Boingo, Jimmy Cliff, David Byrne, FYC, New Order...
Liotta's entrance and subsequent impact on this movie is Brandoesque. His character literally turns the tide of this amazing film. I mean, the temperature literally changes! The entire story arc is immediately altered and the film winds up in a VERY different place, than it started. Demme was a master, and this is truly one of the most original and unpredictable films in cinematic history. Another hilarious point is the cameos, and background characters. The guy on the motorycle with the dog, etc. Not one but two...indie cinema "John" cameos...Sayles and Waters. GREAT performances from Griffiths and Daniels. A true must-see!
Technically speaking that was Yung Wu playing "Fame," since it was Feelies percussionist Dave Weckerman doing the singing, that band name being the one they performed under when playing Weckerman's original songs, plus covers.
Perhaps, but the first song was Crazy Rhythms , which was not a Yung Wu song, plus, the movie was from 1986 and Yung Wu didn't release an album until 1987. Did they perform as Yung Wu in 1986?
@agnernai Many thanks for the reply - would have loved to have seen this on the big screen, instead I got to see Alex Cox introduce it on BBC2's Moviedrome in late 80s if my memory serves...
@beatcat22 I hear ya. I don't think the 80's will ever be topped when it comes to pop music. Now, no matter where you turn the "dial" it's mostly commercials with a little bit of "music" in between.
Top drawer movie and a terrific scene from it, thanks for posting this 1980s nostalgia! Anyone know what the 2nd song played on the clip is? Is it one of the Feelies own or another cover?
0:08 if she offered me a drink in New York, I'd be on the next plane over. Shame about the coronavirus stopping us going anywhere right now. lol THAT will date this comment in time.

I'm here because I was thinking the exact same thing. He's one of the greatest.
Ray Liotta, one scary SOB. His introduction in Something Wild is one of the greatest.
Isn't it wonderful. The guy turns up and just takes over in this classic. That said, all three stars are superb in this one. Superb.
Ray Liotta is really good but the last 15 minutes of the film goes way over the top. He goes from charismatic creepy to outright Jason Voorhees by the end.
Exactly. The transition that happens in this two minutes is positively alchemical.

The Feelies sounded raw. Still sounds great to this day
They rock

One of the best hidden gems of a movie!

totally agree. You can really tell that at this point in the movie the mood completely changes
You do justice here. Props.
Trivia: The actress who's hitting on Jeff Daniels in this scene also played Jeff Goldblum's wife in Independence Day.
Hey, I SAID is was trivial!
she also played "Margo" on As the World Turns in the 80s
She is Margaret Colin and she's again with Jeff Daniels in the Butcher's wife (1991)...
Ray Liotta was so very pretty in this film, which premiered 35 years ago.

Awesome movie
Wish the entire movie was on you tube, it's great!
Just found this on DVD first time I had seen it in about 15 years and it's still a really good film forgot how nuts liotta is !
Awesome film... also love me some Married to the Mob. Demme loved music just like John Hughes did.
Demme was so hip the whole time
Su Tissue from the Suburban Lawns is in this scene. She plays the real quiet wife of the straight-laced classmate, whom they talk to here.
dancing with Ray Liotta?
Su plays the pregnant wife who is with the guy from Jeff Daniels’ office. Their music is finally available on CD after all these years.
Jeff Daniels = so adorable!! Love this movie so much!!

Also, after Fame they start playing Loveless Love...
The music at the end is composed by Laurie Anderson. (In 2003 she was named NASA's first artist in residence) See Big Science.
