    I completely feel for you when it comes to dealing with struggling with time management. I have adhd and didn't discover it until age 24 (which is common for women) even though I did okay in college, I realized a lot of my issues with time management / time blindness come from that. If I can provide any tips I've learned, it would be to always give yourself a few more days for each piece than you think you'll need. Also it may help to be way more specific with each deadline goal and the exact steps that need to be completed in order to do it. For example, the goal might be to finish the piece but its way more complicated than that. In actuality the steps might be to: organize + gather any references you might need into one image, gather sketches, refine line work, do flat color fills to/ determine color palette, add shading, add details and refine. That way you can divide your days up by those specific steps as well. I'm happy you posted this anyway regardless of the issues you faced and wish you luck on future projects Annosha :-)

      Thank you for sharing your tips!! After seeing so many people talking about it I think that… I might have ADHD?? I feel like a lot of the traits fit me exactly but others (the hyperactive traits) don’t at all so I have no idea! I appreciate your tips though and I’ll look into other ways to make this easier on myself :’)

      @@AnooshaSyed I highly recommend the channel HowToAdhd for more info, its sooo helpful. There are three kinds: inattentive, hyperactive and combined. So you could totally have inattentive adhd but not relate to hyperactive traits. And no problem!! Life can be so tough sometimes for artists, glad I could help in any way!

      @@AnooshaSyed hello! I am a recently diagnosed female ADHDer and I don’t tend to carry strong hyperactive traits. Our hyperactive can be in the mind (racing thoughts etc) it is different to inner restlessness (notice how you talk with very animated hands?) I’d say if you feel it’s there then go for an assessment. I’m also a living working professional artist and the OP gave some excellent advice. Love your work!

      Highly recommend ‘How to ADHD’ too, even if you don’t even up having ADHD. I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 42 and like others commenting here am the ‘inattentive type’ (mental hyperactivity instead of physical). It’s a struggle (especially when you are self-employed) but finding a community with other adults who function like you can help so much!

I am working on illustrating my first non-fiction/historical picture book... although I do not have nearly as many illustration projects under my name as you do, I related to you everytime you mentioned being "stressed out" 😭 but seeing this content makes me excited to possibly become a full-time illustrator instead of juggling a 9-5 corporate job with it. I can relate to this so much as a freelance illustrator! I try to manage my schedule as best as I can to have a good work/life balance, but sometimes clients change the deadlines on the go, and I can't do anything about it - this also led me to working non stop the whole November and half of December. So I feel you!

      @AnooshaSyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s no point to scheduling because something always goes wrong! I will think that I’ve lined up all my multiple projects perfectly so they don’t overlap; but somehow each one gets a delay so they all end up needing final art at the exact same time hahaha

    Oh Anoosha, I feel you... Watching this vlog was like watching my own life... I have to finish a picture book for mid August (the deadline was already extended from July). I am so overworked because the advance was small and I have to work commissions alongside this project. I live alone in Toronto like you, so yeah, rent and living expenses... This book will be my author debut, so it's a big deal! I'm so overworked that I got sick last week and totally screwed my productivity. I'm so worried that I won't make this extended deadline... I wouldn't change this career for any other, but my goodness, there are moments where it feels like moving through liquid cement. Next project I will try to negotiate a longer deadline if the advance is too small. Live and learn.

Which is a good thing 😌 The title of the book instantly reminded me of the song "That's not my name" by The Ting Tings 😄 The illustrations made in Procreate are soo cute! ❤ Yeah, creating content is a roller coaster, we are emotional beings and it's impossible to stay on a certain level all time time.

    Thanks for sharing these slices of life as always. For the first time in my whole life I'm currently looking forward to dedicate myself to creative endeavors on a full-time basis. I am fully aware that taking the freelance route isn't always sunshine and rainbows, and that more often than not you end up working yourself to the bone (as it is very stated here). However, realizing you are doing this all because it is your life's calling and is 100% for your own benefit, as opposed to working for someone else and have that someone determine how much is your contribution worth... well that sets things differently for me. (Nothing wrong with being an employer - I've been one for decades. But I feel I'm ready for something else).
    And you do well on prioritizing mental and physical health above work - no amount of money is going to buy your health back. Seems like you have a great agent, another important piece of the puzzle.

      I learnt the basics for a job once but I’ve never needed to use it for my own work! I know some illustrators swear by it but it depends on the type of work you do and style. Like if you were to create a lot of vector art. I’d imagine that it would be used a lot in graphic design but it’s not too common in the illustration industry! :)

      As a freelancer I work with multiple clients at once; my clients understand this. And working on ‘personal stuff’ didn’t make me miss my deadline; I was working on my book for 90% of my time in the video, but because it’s NDA I’m unable to film it. I asked for a deadline increase because initially I was supposed to be given more time but contract delays (outside my control) got in the way and delayed the project. It was well within my right to ask for more time, and I had asked early enough as well which is just good etiquette. If they publisher had then said there wasn’t additional time in the schedule, I would’ve made the original deadline work. 🤷🏽‍♀️
