    Allied artillery, not knowing about the lost Battalion was shelling German positions with the Lost Battalion caught in the crossfire.

    Artillery would be shot from another unit, not the one in the middle that's surrounded. That's how friendly fire could happen. Trying to hit all those Germans with Friendly's in the middle

    In the album, the previous song was a prelude to this one. It was called "Diary of an Unknown Soldier".
    I recommend anyone to listen to the album "The Last Stand". No bad songs from Sabaton 🔥🔥🔥🔥

    This is why I love seeing reactions to this song.... Plenty of people say the percussion sounds like gunshots, which it actually is. What you're hearing is samples of a 9mm, .50, and bayonet.
    As for the friendly fire bit, the artillery was further away. There's a solid made-for-TV movie about this, and their depiction of it might help you visualize better how something like that could have happened. It's on TH-cam in it's entirety last I checked. Just search for "Lost Battalion movie" or "Lost Battalion movie friendly fire" if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

    Dairy of the Unknown Soldier leads right into this song. The drum beat you’re hearing is an actual drum set they put together to where each beat represents a weapon. The siff siff sound is the bayonet, pop pop is a pistol, the boom boom is the rifles and grenades.
    Also while Liberty Division was fighting to survive, SGT Alvin C York was building his legend too.
    The friendly fire came in from artillery that they kept calling for in order to help them and it was landing inside their formations.
    The 30th Infantry Division had similar incidents happening to them as well. Between carrier pigeons, runners, radios that may or may not have worked because they were still new in the field and heavier.
    The Germans told the last remaining sergeant of the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division to surrender at Yeppes and the sergeant was recorded as saying, “Go to hell! We’ll fight right down to last man, the last round, last ounce of blood. We shall crack our stocks upon your skulls, full our bayonets in you chest, and bare the white bone of our knuckles before we surrender”

    The munitions part refers to when their Allies tried dropping supplies for them, they mis aimed them and the ones attacking them got the supplies.

  • @ryantannar5301
    @ryantannar5301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The supplies dropped on the foe is very literal. They tried to airdrop supplies to the battalion but the supplies landed in a German controlled part of the forest. They were almost out of ammo and instead of getting more the Germans got their extra ammo.

    What’s kinda cool in the song is that the bass drum is a machine gun, hi hat is a bayonet going into flesh and snare is a 9mm gunshot.

    The 77th out distanced their allies on the front lines during the battle. Gaining ground without any reliable communications without radios or wired comms, relying on runners. Artillery was an area vs pin point weapon at that time sk the allies had no clue of the 77th's predicament. If I'm not mistaken, this is where the carrier pigeon Cher Ami earned their medal and honors

  • @G6Ben
    @G6Ben 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Artillery, especially during WW1 was often times seen as more valuable than the men so the artillery were often held far back from the front lines so they couldn't be destroyed. The artillery was hitting the lost battalion because they had extended so far behind enemy lines nobody had any idea where they were. Also a fun fact, the lost battalion was made up of mostly NYC men, most of them immigrants from various countries such as Germany, but also many of them also being poor and living an everyday struggle to simply survive. So when they were fighting for their lives behind enemy lines, this NYC attitude came out refusing to give in. This was also aided by the German immigrants in the battalion who were able to translate the orders that were being barked out loud thinking the Americans couldn't understand them.

    Btw... The bass drum is changed for a sound 12.7mm MG, rythm drum for 9mm sound and cymbals for bayonet running through the human flesh... ;) All in all, one of the best Sabaton songs!

    A small interesting note: the track before this one in the Last Stand album "Diary of an Unknown Soldier" is supposed to be written by one of the soldiers trapped in the Argonne and a part of this battalion. In it, you hear the beat begin to take shape as he remembers and talks about what he is going through and you find out that it is supposed to sound like a battlefield. Bayonets piercing flesh, the pounding of artillery fire, and the rumbling of guns are supposed to form the beat.
    It adds a little more weight when you hear those same sounds and have context of what the beat is supposed to represent. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case people didn't know.
    Edit: And no sooner do I type this you bring up you hear the whizzing of bullets. lol happens every time. Still, gonna keep this up for those who don't know about the previous track.

    When you are surrounded by enemies, in the land, that allies think is in enemy hand, 'cause you have no chance to tell them... Then you can get shelled... same with food supplies... they can drop them form plane, but you can't tell them precise coords, because you have no means to tell them... and that was the situation of nine companies of of 77th Division at Argonne.

    OH also while this fight was going at the same time Alvin York and his Div the 82nd was fighting in the same area and were he would earn his MOH and Sabaton signs about that in "82nd All the Way" but the story of the LOST BATTALION made all the headlines at the time and York's actions were over shadowed until much later in the media.

    There’s a great movie made in 2002 of the same name about this event. I recommend it. Also some clarification. The friendly fire was because American artillery was shelling them because they didn’t know their exact position so they underestimated their aim. They sent their last carrier pigeon, Cher Ami, with a message to stop the barrage. She was hit by a German bullet destroying one of her legs, rupturing a lung and tearing a hole through one of her wings. She made it over 10 miles back to HQ and got them to stop firing. Then they sent a plane to scout their position, and drop supplies. Reports show they mistook the German position for the Americans and dropped the supplies on the Germans. They were alone in the woods completely cut off miles deep in enemy territory for 6 days. All the while under attack by units of elite shock troops, the legendary Stoßtruppen equipped with flamethrowers and a new kind of weapon(at the time), SMGs. They survived and even rejected multiple offers of surrender

    The friendly firing was coming down on them because they had far extended beyond their lines(same reason they ended up cut off to begin with). As far as their allied artillery crew knew the coordinates they were shelling was all enemy units. This similarly is why their supply drops were being dropped on the enemy as well, there was major miscommunication regarding the exact location of the battalion.
    The shelling near their location got so bad that their only messenger pigeon to actually get through back to their lines, Cher Ami, had the message attached to them simply say, “We are along the road paralell to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heavens sake stop it.”
    The situation with the pigeons in and of itself was a cascade of misfortune and mistakes, with most of the attempted pigeons sent out being shot dead. Cher Ami himself started his journey badly, going on to settle on a tree close to where he was released, and the battalion themselves having to shoot at it to get the damned thing to fly off. Well, I say “damned thing” but Cher Ami was actually a badass. The Germans managed to shoot him too, but he took flight again and when he reached the allied lines he was found to have been shot through the breast, blinded in one eye, and one of his legs was still holding on by only a tendon.

    There isn't a ton out there in education or pop culture abt the USA in World War I. As an American, I appreciate SABATON for "The Lost Battalion" "Devil Dogs" "82nd All the Way" & from upcoming album "Hellfighters" abt The Harlem Hellfighters. Friendly Fire is one of the most horrible things that happens, but it does happen in the confusion of war. The "Doughboys" (as American Soldiers were called in WW1) of the 77th Liberty Division DID stand strong in the Argonne Forrest. The 77th was also a very ethnically diverse unit mostly from NY city.

    the friendly fire is because their friends didn't know they were in the middle of the enemy, so they were getting shelled along with the enemy. the supplies were dropped on their foe meaning, once their friends found out they were trapped, they were sent supplies, but the supplies ended up in enemy hands.

    Most gave a good description about the allied artillery the thing was these men would use runners basically a relatively fast guy to jump out of cover and make it to a safe position where he could actually tell them there location and to stop shelling that area I do believe the tried using carrier pigeons to send the messages out also unless I'm thinking of a different conflict but regardless the Germans would actively try and shoot the pigeons out the sky

The munitions falling on their foe was in reference to an Airdrop of food and ammo which fell too far out and the Germans got it instead. This is also the story of Cher Ami a carrier pigeon who was shot twice and hit by a Hawk but struggled back up and delivered his message to the command to get the allies up and moving.

    Liberty division had the objective to push into enemy land along side many other divisions. But they were the only ones making a rapid success without many german encounters. as they stood upon a empty outpost. they dug in as they were too far away for any communications. As they sent out people and pigeons to the headquaters they were shot and surrounded by germans. Germans tried to take the outpost back even in hand to hand fights. They were holding the outpost for 7 days. But since pigeons were the only way of comunication friendlies did not know where liberty division was maybe assuming they were dead so they set artillery on the outpost. even the germans were suprised by that. finally a pigeon made it through and artillery stopped and they escaped.
