    Fun fact, Erwin Rommel was the one in charge-at least for a while-of the 7th Panzer division. It's heavily believed that Rommel was a part of Operation Valkryie-assassination attempt on Hitler-, he never joined the Nazi's because he disliked the political ideals, he also is the one who set up the Atlantic wall at Normandy because he believed that's where an allied attack would be. Rommel was a very great leader.

      He was also the only one in the Nazi high command that wasn't put on trial after the war for war crimes etc. I believe when he died, Churchill said something to the effect of "The world has lost its last honourable enemy"

    • @Alex-xt1rr
      @Alex-xt1rr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@XMorbidReignX Rommel couldn't be put on trial after the war since due to his connection to the people involved in the Valkery plot he was forced by Nazi high command to commit suicide or else they would have put his wife and children on trail for high treason as well.

      @ozzyp97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alex-xt1rr Indeed, though it's worth noting that Rommel's refusal to carry out some of Hitler's more insane orders was actually used as evidence against other Nazi leaders who tried to claim they were "just following orders". He's certainly not innocent, but does genuinely deserve some praise too.

    Clearly hasn't yet listened to... Price of a Mile, Cliffs of Gallipoli, The End of the War to End War, and, well, you get the idea. Most of Sabaton's WW1 songs seem to emphasize what a pointless waste of human life it was.

    • @najroe
      @najroe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the Swedish version of lifetime of war, En livstid I krig, starts with the lines (badly translated by me)
      I look around and I see my home fade away
      My time at home now feels far too short
      a mere youth, barely a man, when duty called me
      If I ever see my home again, I do not know
      Among friends/relatives from my village, I went out to figtht
      And the world was on fire
      then the refrain
      because war can
      destroy a man
      I give my life for my country of birth
      but who will miss me?
      then see me as the
      husband or friend
      father and son that is never coming home
      who will mourn me?
      let most anyone, soldier, sailor... with combat behind them read that and look at their eyes, either pain or 1000mile stare with things going on behind the scenes.

      After that i listened to the ballad over and over again. I was crying so hard that i had problems with breathing (I'm in poor shape).
      That song still makes me cry a bit every time i listen too it.
      I mean....Bull must have known what would happen to him if he did this. He already had PTSD before he climbed that mountain the first time because he had experienced being shot at before.
      Gallipoli, Verdun, Passchendale and fort Osowiec - Mankind will always be at war but hopefully no new battles like those will be written in the history books again.

    Some Information.
    The 7th Panzer Division was an armored formation of the German Army in World War II. It participated in the Battle of France, the invasion of the Soviet Union, the occupation of Vichy France, and on the Eastern Front until the end of the war. The 7th Panzer Division is also known by its nickname, Ghost Division.
    The division met with great success in France in 1940 and then again in the Soviet Union in 1941. In May 1942, the division was withdrawn from the Soviet Union and sent back to France to replace losses and refit. It returned to Southern Russia following the defeat at Stalingrad, and helped to check a general collapse of the front in a series of defensive battles as part of Army Group Don, and participated in General Erich von Manstein's counterattack at Kharkov.The division fought in the unsuccessful offensive at Kursk in the summer of 1943, suffering heavy losses in men and equipment and was further degraded in the subsequent Soviet counteroffensive.
    Through 1944 and 1945, the division was markedly understrength and continuously engaged in a series of defensive battles across the eastern front. It was twice evacuated by sea, leaving what was left of its heavy equipment behind each time. After fighting defensively across Prussia and Northern Germany, the surviving men escaped into the forest and surrendered to the British Army northwest of Berlin in May 1945.

    Dave, I enjoy watching your Sabaton reactions, especially because you aren't a history buff, but show how people who don't like history can become interested through their music:) Regarding Ghost Division, it was the first live song of theirs that I heard in a concert. It was September 2022, and the third night of Sabaton's US tour. The covid restrictions had just been lifted. So, this was an incredible concert for so many reasons: the great song, everyone glad to be back together in a live concert, and it was Sabaton:) You can watch this live version of Ghost Division, Sabaton - Ghost Division + Stormtroopers [Live in Portland 9/17/22]. I'm so glad that someone filmed and posted it, and that Sabaton leaves it up on TH-cam! Regarding the history of Ghost Division, sure, Sabaton's History Channel explains this historic event very well. You might enjoy the comments too. Rommel was not supposed to cross the "heavily fortified" Maginot Line, fortified by the French. Rommel completely ignored this order and pushed on. One of the comments pretends to be Rommel after he crossed it, asking high command, "THAT was the Maginot Line?" As for pushing on with speed, many posters have taken that literally: German soldiers were often given a form of speed to keep them fighting. So, the speed might have been fueled by speed. Best Regards!

    The 7th Panzer Divison got their name "Ghost Division" for their speed.
    Their opposition, nor their command could track them, or communicate with them.
    They were operating completely on their own, disrupting enemy communications while having none of their own either.
    As nobody knew where they were, or what they were doing, they got labeled as the "Ghost Division" and were utterly instrumental for the success of the Blitzkrieg.

    Primo Victoria! :) Also Winged Hussars. There's also Panzer Battalion, (which is actually about the second Gulf War) and Back in Control (about the Falklands War) among others.
    You might like Metal Machine as well which is one of their NON-historical songs :)
    "Fun" fact is that while Rommel's attack worked it really should not have. You're right they were 'booking' and the fact that their flanks were wide open was never exploited because most of the French and English (mostly French though :) ) High Command could not believe that anyone would advance like that so discounted their reported positions until they sent "trusted officers" to confirm the sightings. Needless to say "Go Bold or Go Home" worked in this case but SO many things went exactly right for the Germans and exactly wrong for everyone else that it's been said that anyone proposing this scenario in fiction would be laughed out of the room because it's so implausible. Which it is :)
    As an aside (and you'll note the song "Panzer Battalion" above :) ) there's been a large surge in the last few decades to call ALL tanks "Panzers" (Panthers) due in part to the way they were used in WWII and the blitzkrieg tactics in general.

    The song is called the ghost division because the 7th panzer division was behind French lines and was causing mass chaos they got the nickname ghost division because no one knew where they were not even their own fellow Germans.

    what that snippet didnt cover in that was the ghost division had to retreat because they over extended so much from their front lines they needed to retreat and that they came across french soldiers and reinforcements from different places mustering to where the front line was supposed to be and made them shit their pants and surrender when they declared they already took paris and were just doing patrol sweeps to finish up resistance, they then burned the french supply lines and weapons to make the next advancement easier

    Never heard a sad power metal song? Oh boy is that going to change!
    To start off,
    Cliffs of Gallipoli, The Price of a Mile, The Hammer has fallen, Final Solution, Lifetime of War "Also En livstid I Krig"The swedish "version" but told from a different perspective, Ruina Imperii & Long Live The King(Swedish version is Konungens Likfärd).
    This is not all of them. But the ones that are power metal.
    Well, most of them at least.

    Due to the subject matter this is also one of their most controversial songs, Sabaton has been rejected from playing at certain venues because local administrators look at Ghost Division and think they're a Nazi supporting band. Sabaton themselves said when they write songs about certain groups of people it doesn't mean they're supporting them, plus it's impressive how a panzer division was able to cross an area the size of Ohio in just a day. Even though I am a de Gaulle fan I still enjoy the song despite it's subject matter.

    Erwin Rommel: "Über-rushung"

  • @neoxperson7858
    @neoxperson7858 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just imagine you're a French soldier in 1940. You're on your way to the front, which is still about 200 miles away and all of a sudden a shit ton of German tanks drives past you and starts shooting at you. You'd shit your pants. You don't know where they came from, or why they are there. Is the front 200 miles further east? or have you already reached it? That happened all the time along the way. The French high command had no idea what was going on, because they kept getting reports of engagements even though the front was way further behind. German high command was terrified because an entire army all of a sudden vanished. The rumor of the dangerous "Ghost division" spread through both the French and the German ranks.
    At some point, they advanced so far, that not only they had no communications between them and German high command, but they also started running low on ammo and fuel. So Erwin Rommel, the man responsible for the 7th army, got in his car, and took another couple armored cars with him and drove all the way back to get back into contact with German high command, to get ammo and fuel. On their way, they again passed French troops on their way to the front, taking their guns as if its nothing.

  • @fraserking4747
    @fraserking4747 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Noticed a couple of comments mentioning that Rommel was part of an assassination plot against Hitler and how good a military leader he was. Wanted to step in and say that those two things are heavily disputed. Notably in the former case where he sent a letter to his wife after the attack where he wrote how shocked he was by the attack and how thankful he was that it didn’t succeed. As for the latter point, he notoriously disobeyed orders, and while it worked out in certain instances (like the one in the song), it ultimately hindered him during his campaigns in Africa because of logistics and overextended supply lines.
    Make no mistake, Rommel was not a good man. As Goebbels himself wrote in his diary in 1942, Rommel “is not just sympathetic to the National Socialists. He is a National Socialist.” He was a war criminal and was responsible for the death of many Jews in North Africa.

    I could be wrong but I think the "happy ghost" sound is actually on the keyboard. And again I could be wrong but I think the "spirit" is less happy and more "no regrets." Like the spirit is proud of its actions.
