i like the 01800 for a couple reasons. 1. they were put in the year i was born. 2 they were made not far from my hometown. 3 they look/sound awsome

I remember when these "old" cars were brand new. They had conventional style seats in them, not like the side seating they have now, and there was a big picture window on the left. I was about 10 or 11 when they were put into use. That would be around 1971 or 1972. I was so excited when I got to ride these from Cambridge, Central Square into Park Street. The older Type 1s were the old standby for years and what I remember as lasting forever. Some even had trolley poles on them.

Love the sound of the 1800's, kinda sound a bit like our new trains here in Toronto (T35A08 or Toronto Rocket's) just a different pitch.
Too bad when i was in Boston last for PAX, all i got was the older trains (while nice i wanted some newer ones).

Isn't that sound made by the electrical frequency inside the AC traction motors when they start up?

I feel you, it’s like there grouped together and going opposite of most commuters every time I ride, new going outbound in the morning, and new going inbound in the afternoon/ evening

SgtMays that always happens to me. Just recently I went to a Celtics Game and I got the older trains both ways. I saw only like 3 1800 series trains and a TON of the older ones (1500, 1600 and 1700) were out and about.

I rode both when I went up to Boston, and the newer ones were far better. The old cars were the loudest trains I have ever ridden. If I had to ride the old cars every day, I'd carry hearing protection on my commute.

There is a book on the Red Line from Arcadia Publ. full of pictures and historical notes. It was written by Frank Cheney a well known transit and train author. You may be able to get it at Borders(if its still there) or try Amazon. Their are also Arcadia books on the blue line and the El(Orange Line).

I like the 01800 because they have automatic announcements

I never noticed that the RFW was that accessible. I can tell you what I'll be filming next time I hit Boston! :D

Are the 01700 cars getting the automated announcements when they get refurbished?

They're going to be replaced along with the 1500s and 1600s in a matter of years once the 1900s are built.

Every notice how the 015, 016 and 017 cars grind their way into the stations? That's bearing noise. No bearings when they fail - they either cease up solid or come apart in a whole bunch of pieces. I don't ever want to be on one of those Red Line cars when that happens.

Wait... the 01800s are called "Type 3s", the 015,016,and 01700s are called "Type 2s"
and the 01400s (completally retired) are called "Type 1s"? am I correct?

If you think the older red line is loud check out the green line.

Yeah but new trains are the future .Didn't you know that some trains that are old have
    doors that had trouble closing.
