    Thank you Jim!! First water pump I have changed in over 30 years. Had your video up and it was perfect. Even though this was a '97 Grand Cherokee with a V-8, there used to be a lot more room back in the old days. Your tip on the adhesive was great! I swear that when I removed the old pump there was only about 1/4 of the old gasket left. Thanks again for your video. Two thumbs up!!

    oh my goodness! this is such an old post i hope your still around to read my very sincere thanx and appreciation for your video! my 94 jgc 5.2 feels the same ! im a 63 yr young female about ready to change out my water pump and was in full on panic mode when your video didnt show the removal of the fan! LOL but i read the comments and found your answer about your other video on replacing the fan clutch! im SO RELIEVED! lol i come from a large family of truck drivers and mechanics and thankfully ive inherited many of their tools so i shouldnt have a problem with finding such a big wrench!. i was about an 1/8th of a mile from home when i heard a weird noise id never heard before and i lost lights and some power ( alternator) and power steering and temp guage ran up to 240 almost instantly! good thing i wasnt any further away! just steering my beast took its tole on my body parts!!!! hahaha! but the belt had come off still intact and in almost new shape it seems but im worried without the belt detatched im going to face that fan bolt not wanting to grab hold tight for it to turn and im not sure where to wedge a large screw driver in? i hope i can get that answer here today if i cant figure it out on my own. P.S. JIM? i loved your reply to the nimrod who left a comment on your other video i referred to watching above when he said he laughed the whole way through! your shotgun reply got him right between his stupid laughing cheeks! well done! im still giggling! lol thankyou again! shelli.

    To keep up with the varying pump bolt sizes, I put a piece of masking on each bolt and numbered them 1 to I think 7 starting at the top and clockwise around the pump.

    Very good question.when you install the fan with the wrench and hit it on to tighten it with a hammer that will be tight enough but the rotation of the fan will make it tighter . Thanks for watching

    Thank you for recording/uploading! Everything was right where you said it was. The only things I did differently were to soak all the bolts in PB Blaster (my jeep is a bit rustier than the one in the video) and I borrowed a fan clutch tool from the parts store, which made fan removal a bit easier. All in all, it took me about 5 hours, 2 of which were bleeding/burping the coolant system. This fine gentleman here helped me save probably 300 bucks by doing it myself! Thanks again for taking the time to make this video!

    Just finished installing the water pump in my 98 GC, your guide was extremely helpful in speeding up the job. For anybody who is having issues using the pry-bar method or getting the clutch fan off, if you have a press-on style pulley the lisle 44180 tool makes this part of job the easiest. Thanks for the DIY instruction.

    Great vid bud! Good tutorial. Quick tip if anyone out there is an offroader it's a great idea (once you get the shroud off) to trim the bottom inward so that you can remove the shroud without having to remove the fan. This is extremely helpful when cleaning out the radiator after a muddy day on the trails.

    Thanks for the video man it helped a lot. I just did mine today and yes the fan bolt was the hardest part of the whole thing. Couldn't find the right size wrench to fit so finally went to Lowe's and got an adjustable think the bolt was 1 3/8. All and all thanks for the help you saved me a lot of headache.

    Brilliant vid and thanks!
    My '95 was slightly different, but 95% + as described and done
    Fan pulley on the '95 must be slightly larger, as no chance to get to the "top" bolt on the pump with a straight ratchet. That said? Pulling the other stationery pulley above and using an offset 9/16" line wrench in varying degrees of engagement got the job done!
    My biggest challenge once the fan was off was getting the bypass hose engaged again on the new pump.

    On reinstallation, I did not see you clean up or reattach the lower rubber hose from the engine to the pump. Also, I would imagine after years that small length of hose gets damaged, how on earth can you replace it?

    Major suggestion to anyone watching. Neverr drain your coolant from your hose, coolant can corrode and make parts WEAKER. Just do the drain plug method, we don't take off the oil pan gasket to do oil changes, we use the drain plug...

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do know that most cars don't have a drain plug any longer? If you simply rinse off the antifreeze the will be no problem. Thank you for your input. Watch for the next free tool giveaway coming soon.

    The fan and shroud information made for a relatively quick change out. Replacement steel tube was too short and bent wrong. Carefully sanded and scraped the old one, installed new o-ring, tightened both hold-downs and had a leak. Loosened, found an angle that wouldn't leak (raised toward the valve cover) and tightened the front bolt. The valve cover tab is now 1/4 inch up. Don't like leaving it that way. Will probably slit some washers to use as shims for that mount position. Thanks again, so much, for this information. Ya gotta love the 'net.

    Good video Jim! I've watched it twice and I feel I can work my way through it, but I'm stuck on the first step. I can't get the nut loose between the fan and the pulley. I tried a specific tool set from a local parts store and it didn't work. Wrench was too big (36mm, needed smaller) and it was stripping the nut. Any other suggestions or tricks to pin the pulley so that I can crank on the nut and get it loose?

    Jim, thanks for the great write-up. I replaced the wp today and there was a steady drip coming from the bolt closest to the power steering pump before I even started the motor,. I pulled the wp off and checked the new wp flange for straightness/cracks etc in that area .Didn't see anything wrong, so I got a new gasket and reinstalled and had the same leak. I pulled the bolt out and coolant ran out of the bolt hole. I put some old arp sealant (maybe ~ 4 years old) I had on the bolt and reinstalled , but it still leaked . I did not clean out the bolt hole so maybe I just need to redo the sealant but I would have thought it would at least slow the leak and it didn't . I'm pretty sure I did not crack the flange by over-tightening as I only used a 3/8ths drive and probably only torqued to 25 lbs. My next move will be to apply permatex 2 #2m 'Form a gasket" and see what happens , but I would like to know if you have any ideas ? Thanks

    • @stangoldstein5947
      @stangoldstein5947 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stan Goldstein Hi Stan Did you replace the o ring on the by pass tube with a new one and use a little sealer before you install the tube.

    • @stangoldstein5947
      @stangoldstein5947 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jimthecarguy I did replace the o-ring,examined the tube for defects, then I added some permatex #2 still dripping so I put some permatex black silicone to finally get it sealed . Still had a slow drip, but that has now sealed itself off. My next step would have been to either replace the tube or add some stop-leak. Thanks again.

    I noticed you didn't have to use the trick to tighten the fan bolt at the end of the video. Is this because the serpentine belt kept it tight? I am on the last step. I don't want to turn the jeep on and have my fan take off on me.

    All finished up. my engine is overheating. For some reason I am not getting any coolant to the engine. Do you think it could be my thermostat?
    Thank you for the very helpful video. Everything was very clear and step by step.

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be the thermostat but before you replace that make sure that the antifreeze is full .When the cooling system is totally empty from replacing the water pump the engine may have an air pocket that is causing the truck to over heat.How much antifreeze did you put back into the radiator after you replaced the pump?

    • @Rob-vx2fb
      @Rob-vx2fb 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      jimthecarguy I filled radiator up all the way. The top hose to the thermostat doesn't get any antifreeze in it. I checked the thermostat and there was no coolant in it or under it. I could pore coolant in it with hopes it will help it circulate.

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very important that the antifreeze is full to the top or it will continue to over heat .The thermostat has to be in the antifreeze.Good luck let me know how it works

    • @KoTOfficial
      @KoTOfficial 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      have the car running with the radiator cap off, also jack up the front end. squeeze the top tube a few times and you should see the air bubbles coming out of the radiator cap. This is called Blurping the system, and it is a very important part.

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gungun69_Prt2 The best way to get the tube back in without destroying the o ring is to put silicone on the o ring and the pump where the tube goes into.Then you turn the tube while pushing it into place.Make sure to put everything into the correct positing when the silicone drys. Keep me posted and let me know if you need anything else.

    Well....I got as far as trying to remove the hose that you show at 11:00 into the video. I couldn't for the life of me remove that friggin' hose. I think someone may have put sealant on it because it just wouldn't come off the pump no matter what I tried. Does it make sense that someone might have used sealant? None of the other hoses were difficult at all.
    Got any suggestions on how to get that hose to come loose? If I can't get it loose, I'm screwed.
    Thanks!

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott I have seen some hoses that sealant was used but it is more likely that the hose has just been on for a long time and is just stuck.Try using a pair of pliers to turn the hose and them remove or a screw driver to get it to move.If no luck you will most likely have to replace that hose.Good luck let me know how you do .Jim

    • @JSWMobileMedia
      @JSWMobileMedia 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jimthecarguy Thanks for the reply. Gave it my best shot and still can't get the hose to come off. One of the biggest challenges is the hose clamp that Jeep went with on this model (different than the ones shown on your video), as well as the limited amount of space around the hose. I just can't move the clamp out of the way enough to get a wide enough wrench on the hose to turn it. I have decided to remove the alternator and the AC compressor so that I can get to the hose to replace it (the hose is old and probably should be replaced anyway). I will also be replacing the annoying hose clamps Jeep used with the easy to use clamps shown in your video.

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changing the hose is a good idea being that the Jeep has no antifreeze in it now and the hose is most likely old .Good luck let me know if you need and other dvice .Jim

    • @JSWMobileMedia
      @JSWMobileMedia 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim - thanks for all the assistance. I really appreciate it. Since my last message new issues have come up with the Jeep. Unfortunately I caused some serious electrical damage after trying to reconnect the battery. I was in a hurry and completely forgot that I had removed the alternator to get to the water pump hose. So you can probably imagine the sparks and smoke that I created. It appears that i fried the fuse box as that is where the sparks and smoke were coming from. I am curious as to what other damage I may have caused. I am assuming that I may have also fried the computer. Any thoughts?
