Willies does. Talk to any songwriter, the hardest songs to write are the ones that touch the heart. "Tamborine man" is nonsensical crap about a guy shaking change in front of a juke box. "You were always on my mind" is real.
Willie is like a master painter, who uses the back-line of the song as a blank canvas. He then paints over it with lyrics spoken as poetry, and shaded in with innovative guitar licks. A maestro.
The look on the faces of his peers is priceless. He hit all the right notes at the right time , his guitar accompaniment was perfect and he knew it, his voice was so majestic and clear. Just perfection, any current country singer would give their left arm to be able to accomplish that. But I don't know of any that could come close. One of my three heroes in life.

Played this last night for my grandpa hours before his passing. He loved Willie. God, it hurts, but it brings me peace knowing he’s finally at peace ❤🙌
To me Willie Nelson's guitar playing is orchestral. It's like a string or horn arrangement that moves so beautifully through the changers. Truely a master of song.

Legendary performance. His talent with the guitar and gifts with arrangements, mastery of emotional presence, and unquestionable humanity, make him a performer truly unlike anyone else. The second he starts playing, you instantly believe he’s singing just for you. Thanks for posting this. I watch it often.
Wow....Willie is a one-of-a-kind artist...just love his singing and playing style, more of a jazz singers phrasing and vocal timing, unlike anyone else in the country world God bless him. Looking forward to the new album coming out this month.
One of the finest guitar accompaniments I've ever heard. His mastery of the guitar is so under-appreciated due to his songwriting, voice, and style. It seems he's improvising and making it up on the fly as he's going along too. Listen to the rhythmical changes and soulful, jazzy, and in some places even flamenco-ish instrumental riffs during his solos. Brings tears to my eyes. Just look at the faces of his peers as they listen to his fingers skate over that fretboard.
+Larry A. right on. i've been watching this video for months. it has made me get the guitar out and try to get the changes right. you hit the nail on the head. his buddies are meditating, chanting and almost crying at points. there are some cool diminished runs in there i got to figure out. he's the real deal.
+Larry A. Absolutely, he has such a great touch...give me a soulful Willie Nelson over a John Mclaughlin or Tommy Emmanuel any day. Such a great performance
Came across this version a few years ago now, and although not a fan of country when i really need to listen to the pinacle of quality this is my first port of call listening to the sublime Willie Nelson.
Willie epitomizes a musician who has spent a lifetime reaching and growing into their craft. His 1962 version is solid, but it pales in comparison to the incredible depth his voice has here and the harmonic adventuring in his fearless improvisation.
Yeah, well said. I think he created a really interesting dichotomy between himself and the band in this version. The way he drags his tempo, doing all kinds of wild, jazzy improv stuff with his left hand and still manages to hit all the key strokes and notes is really brilliant. And the guy just makes it sound so damn effortless... I also really love his choice of instrument here; He's playing an old, beat-up guitar that actually _sounds_ like an old, beat-up guitar. It adds a whole lot of character to an already great tune, and it really fits perfectly with the sentimental character of the song.
Runi my trombone professor is a member of the Los Angeles opera. Very high level of musicianship. We were talking abt elastic time n expression n he starts talking abt willie! Hell yes!
I like watching these other musicians, acknowledging that they're living this song, growing older, the song is living inside each of them. And you can read it in their faces. How time is so short.
Willie Nelson is one of the last old time singers we have left, I just found out he started writing songs at the age of eight!! I did hear he's not doing well and our hearts and prayers are with you, please get well soon!! We all love you!!💜😇🐎
I can never get over this. It only gets better as time goes on. It's the way he plays it with such ease like he's just chillin by himself even though he's on literally the biggest stage possible.
One of the most recorded guitars in music history. There isn't anyone on the planet who has not heard a Willie Nelson song. Or Trigger. Great artist. Great song. This song as recorded here should be a number 1 hit.
Willie, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Paul and John, Paul Simon, define a generation of musical talent that will stand the test of time. This performance is epic.
Now that is perfection for a live performance. Willie wrote it. I love his 1960’s version. This has over thirty years ripening. Willie playing Trigger, lovely solos, Willie’s voice = impeccable phrasing. And, the backup musicians: percussion, pedal steel, fiddle, all toned it down to simply and quietly play the chord outline. Absolutely lovely!
I feel the same was. I cannot stop playing this song and listening to every version, by every artist I can find. This version is perfection in every way. Willie is in a zone during this performance, that few will ever experience, save for absorbing every aspect of this performance, over and over.
I know I have posted prior, but does ANYONE realize the talent of this man? Unique voice and style, writes his own, great guitarist and will porbebly be leaving us from this world soon.
He once wrote great songs, the earliest of them recorded first by others and then himself, while also recording songs written by others. There are few equals to Willie when he was at his songwriting prime in the late fifties through seventies. But he hasn't written a heck of a whole lot of consequence since the first half of the 1980s, when he wrote 'On the Road Again' at the request of the producer of the movie "Honeysuckle Rose" which starred Willie Nelson, 'Half A Man' in 1983, and Forgiving You Was Easy 1984. 'Me and Paul' wasn't recorded until 1984 and released in 1985, but it was written in the early 1970s. Though he has continued to make some incredible records, most of the songs that have carried them were either written by others or written by Nelson prior to about 1980. The most notable exception I can think of is 1993's 'Still Is Still Moving Me'. From 1994 until 2014 Willie didn't record any original self-penned albums at all, and from 2014 on everything original has been co-written with producer Buddy Cannon getting first billing in the credits. In the end, the singular song that one must always go back to when considering how Willie Hugh Nelson became "Willie" is 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain'. It was written by Fred Rose in the 1940s. It was recorded by Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Ferlin Husky, Slim Whitman, Gene Vincent, Whispering Bill Anderson, Hank Snow, and Conway Twitty in the 30 years before Willie got around to recording it. After "Red Headed Stranger", everyone forgot about all of those other versions. That's what makes Willie Nelson who he most is.
Michael Clark When artists are evaluated, it has been said, their creative years are when they are in their 20’s and 30’s. That’s okay. The original ideas and the well goes dry after twenty years of writing. Then, artists can perform and go on tour. The public joys seeing them perform live. The public can applaud the artist and say thank you for all the enjoyment they have given us. Hello Walls is still my Willie favorite.

A Room full of legends in Awe. How lucky are we all?
You won't see better than this. God Bless Willie Nelson.
Willie is like a master painter, who uses the back-line of the song as a blank canvas. He then paints over it with lyrics spoken as poetry, and shaded in with innovative guitar licks. A maestro.
Fortunately he passed on his love of music and his talent to his son Lukas and we get to enjoy it for another 50 years.
So beautifully stated💜

This has to be one of Willies finest moments, just Amazing.
One of county music's finest performances
The look on the faces of his peers is priceless. He hit all the right notes at the right time , his guitar accompaniment was perfect and he knew it, his voice was so majestic and clear. Just perfection, any current country singer would give their left arm to be able to accomplish that. But I don't know of any that could come close. One of my three heroes
in life.
5 years ago I decided to retire early. My coworkers asked me what I was going to do. I said I was going to strive to be like Willie Nelson. I don't yet have braids, but it's just a matter of time.
I have always loved his music and spirit.
@@keithp1417good luck…
This song was written and recorded in 1962. It still sounds incredible. This is the best version I have found.
The version on Milk Cow Blues album ain't bad either. One of my favorite Willie albums.
Look at the pride in Willie's eyes after the song. This was a HUGE performance for him.
The version with Cash on VH1 story tellers is damn fine as well
Stevie Wonder has the best version.
This is easily the best version of all the renditions I’ve heard
If you ever wondered how a guitar should be played, this is it.
He makes the guitar talk and sing at the same time. 🎸

What do you admire most about Willie
@@MarcosBryant-lj8zi Well let me think,,,,What I like in a singer/songwriter is originality, timing, clarity, and the feeling singers can put with the words,, Willie is a soloist, put him singing a duet, and you've got a problem,, but anyway I admire the man, When Willie goes, we'll all loose,,, So willie theres only one solution,,,,,,,,,DON'T GO.
He has the whole room mesmerized. That's what real music does. It takes you away.

To me Willie Nelson's guitar playing is orchestral. It's like a string or horn arrangement that moves so beautifully through the changers. Truely a master of song.
I agree, and I don't know why the hell Nashville feels they have to drown the music with sappy orchestration.
Holding all of his fellow legends in a trance, that's magic. Bobby Bare can barely stop the gushing.
Wow, this is one of those "Real Time" moments Willie is singing from from the Heart to an "audience" that Truely reccognizes a True Classic!!!
Amazing version, makes me think of my father. He isn’t suffering from drinking and depression anymore. Rest in peace dad

Wow....Willie is a one-of-a-kind artist...just love his singing and playing style, more of a jazz singers phrasing and vocal timing, unlike anyone else in the country world God bless him. Looking forward to the new album coming out this month.
yes his off time or half time vocals And guitar playing behind and ahead of the melody is Willie. Genius.
@jwray9946 couldn't agree more. No one quite the same.
Amen. Well said!
+Larry A. right on. i've been watching this video for months. it has made me get the guitar out and try to get the changes right. you hit the nail on the head. his buddies are meditating, chanting and almost crying at points. there are some cool diminished runs in there i got to figure out. he's the real deal.
+Larry A. Absolutely, he has such a great touch...give me a soulful Willie Nelson over a John Mclaughlin or Tommy Emmanuel any day. Such a great performance
+Larry A. I think his guitar is a Martin, it sounds great, but is has seen it's share of use!
+Larry A. He is a national treasure!
Hell yes!

There are entertainers and musicians. Willie is an artist. A true American iconic story teller with a one of a kind sound. Timeless
You nailed it with the word artist. . .perhaps muse. What's happening there is not of conscious thought.
Its origins are unknown to Willie. It is art.
Ruined his voice, smoking too much reefer-shame. Might have turned queer also
I like watching these other musicians, acknowledging that they're living this song, growing older, the song is living inside each of them. And you can read it in their faces. How time is so short.
What a voice, what guitar picking, what a song...Willie forever
Notice how everyone in the room knows they’re witnessing a genius hands down
And they respectfully skip the somewhat annoying and distracting applause for an incredible solo. That,s restreint à d respect

Toby Keith?? Look what he did to Kris Kristofferson , before playing and singing like this..Willie is a fucking Jedi!!!
I can never get over this. It only gets better as time goes on. It's the way he plays it with such ease like he's just chillin by himself even though he's on literally the biggest stage possible.
Everyone here is an accomplished musician but they are all watching a master. This may be one of the best performances I've ever listened to.
One of the most recorded guitars in music history. There isn't anyone on the planet who has not heard a Willie Nelson song. Or Trigger. Great artist. Great song. This song as recorded here should be a number 1 hit.
Sublime masterpiece of a
Performance Mr. Nelson. Absolutely beautiful music.
Willie, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Paul and John, Paul Simon, define a generation of musical talent that will stand the test of time. This performance is epic.
Big fan for 50 years. A very gifted man with his song and Trigger.
Absolutely. I'm honoured to have lived in such times.
Just seen this. (2023) His phrasing is odd, in that he seems to slip in and out of the bars/beat, but oh so effective.
Sitting outside, light rain....reminds me of days gone by
I genuinely can't stop playing this, it is so fantastic. What a talent and what a song. The sound he gets out of Trigger would put Clapton to shame.
I don't think we appreciate word's until we get older . it's funny now time silps away.
Not shame just different style. Both Masters of their instruments!
@@thomaspick4123 Hank Cochran was still writing hits 50+ years after his first #1.
His guitar skills are impeccable. In this song alone he displayed 3 different guitar styles. He’s a genius.

Richard Spikman I
@Oak Hill But he was only about 58 when this video was recorded.
@Oak Hill What I see on Porter's face is, "Why couldn't I write songs that good?"
@Oak Hill Porter realized he would never be as good a songwriter or entertainer as Dolly. That's why he fought so hard to keep her under his thumb before she left his show (and creative control offstage as well). Had he given her the freedom she craved within the framework of his management, she would probably have stayed longer than she did.
Been a fan of Willie's for a long time now. Impressed by how much his peers are listening in awe and respect, relating to the story being told. I'm right with y'all and many thanks to you Willie, for sharing everything with us. God Bless ya Willie.
