This is the only concert I ever attended alone. I had two tickets, nobody else wanted to go with me. You can't imagine how many people regretted that....
My wife, at the time!! , had the chance of comp tickets from her work. She turned them down, I never forgave her for that mistake! Funnily enough she made bigger mistakes later which she was forgiven but not this one....
What it takes to be a legend. To be one with his old, scrapped, injured guitar, to be one thing with her, to make his ageless voice the perfect company for her. Just that.
Willie's guitar solo @ 2:57 is the game-changer here, just masterful and Kristofferson backs off knowing that Willie is in charge, taking his song to a higher level. Willie hears sounds that others don't and has the gift of sharing those sounds through the guitar and his distinct phrasing. An awesome demonstration here for all of us who pick and sing and maybe write a bit. And KK is delighted to hear his song interpreted so well, transforming it really.
Willie Nelson's guitar playing is coarse, untrained, rough, and more brilliant than the work of anyone with a PhD in music or the most accomplished trained performers. It is a force of nature made even more wonderful played on that antique nylon string guitar. It is perfect.

This is my all time favourite KK song (and there's a wealth of choice). I saw the Highwaymen on this tour at Sheffield with a mate of mine. We had to drive over the Pennines from Blackpool where we were at a conference. It was well worth it. We'd seen all 4 individually but to see them sharing a stage was truly memorable.

Ya forgot a few. Don Williams, Patsy Cline, well, there are too many to name. But I agree. Without autotune, light shows, monster bands many of today's "artists" would be lost. Even today though we have Chris Stapleton, not only a great singer but a guitarist right up there with Willie. And they SAY Randy Travis is improving by leaps and bounds. But like you I miss the days when EVERY performer had to actually be worth his salt. Too many now aren't.

I do agree with you. In the duet with Dyan Cannon the singing is much better, but I'm coming back to this just to see and hear Willie play the guitar. His playing is beyond words!
I saw this Highwaymen show in Holland that year with my best friend. It still lives with us as the best moment we ever shared, because we left our husbands behind and just loved our heroes. God bless them all! And, yes, Waylon did doze off during this, even when we saw them.
There are some of us who had this music in our souls and we knew every word to these songs long before we ever heard them. And then when we heard Willie artistically bring them to life- well....he brings something to life in all of our souls. Thanks Willie
So wish I'd had a chance to attend one of these concerts, even more so to have been there for this magic few moments. Wish there were more Kristofferson, Nelson, Trigger performances out there.
It may be selfish but the vision I have in my mind is sitting around a campfire with Willie and Kris and jammin. I'm dying now so I guess that won't happen but it's given me a lot of comfort.

Couldn't agree anymore. My dad "taped" this concert when it was first broadcast 20 years ago. He played it time and time and time again and I grew to love it. I do agree with you. In the duet with Dyan Cannon the singing is much better, but I'm coming back to this just to see and hear Willie play the guitar. His playing is beyond words!

I saw this Highwaymen show in Holland that year with my best friend. It still lives with us as the best moment we ever shared, because we left our husbands behind and just loved our heroes. God bless them all! And, yes, Waylon did doze off during this, even when we saw them.

Couldn't agree anymore. My dad "taped" this concert when it was first broadcast 20 years ago. He played it time and time and time again and I grew to love it. One of my favorites to sing and and play. Was so fortunate to meet his bass player Bee Spears, back in 78. I hung out when they were in town till I joined the Navy in September of 79. Yeah, Willie smoked back then too. RIP my friend Bee.
