Glad you started with acrylic paint as I just had a mold not set right where I used acrylic color/resin to highlight some details. It was a liquid acrylic paint and my ratio was more like 1:1 🙄 also the tip about letting the resin set up a bit before adding heavier things like glitter so they don’t settle. Very useful info
I do not have the money to join your group but i wanted to say thank you and I have been trying to learn as much as I can about resin and this was a very informative video
It's very helpful to a newcomer like me to know that alcohol ink fades quickly, that really saves me the tragic realisation when I do my first water-based diorama. ;v;
really helpful information Steve, I've watched so many how-to videos where one says don't use paint or food coloring etc.etc.... I'm relearning at this point so much I never knew before; you're really helping me to be a better resin crafter, thank you so much!
I so much enjoy your videos, I only started resin about just over a year I have some good items I think, and I bet I am way more messy than you lol, you wouldn't believe how messy I have got, you give wonderful info ideas etc that even I can understand, so keep going I enjoy your videos.
Mica brushed direct into the mould gives a different effect, especially brushed around the edges. Food colour also comes in a concentrated colour paste form which would reduce the water content. Another way of using stickers or art work on paper is to use uv resin on it first not sure if it would work on watercolour, but works well for images coloured with pencils or alcohol markers.
I work with UV resin almost exclusively, and the UV resin will still soak into paper-based products. I seal them with either packing tape, or duralar and modpodge. Sometimes the modpodge will soak into the paper and/or ruin watercolor paints. UV resin doesn't bond well with regular resin either, so it is better to use exclusively one or the other unless you seal the UV resin piece completely without it touching the edge of your mold.
Thank you Steve for sharing this valuable video. I use charcoal powder to get black colour. It is similar to black mica powder. Resin cures really well without any problems.
Hi I'm so glad that I happened upon your tutorials. I'm new to resin and you've given me such a lot of confidence. Have you written any books? Thanks again x
I new to resin and been watching a few channels that I find very informative and they help but watching yours I’m learning lots and lots of really useful information. Thanks for all your videos. If I need any answers I know I can go to yours and go through your videos and see if theres one that may have what I’m looking for and then I can watch it. I have found that I get most, if not all, my answers from one of your videos and I enjoy your videos a lot too.
Thank you for making these videos! I have only seen two so far but I have learned a lot and really enjoyed them too! Can't wait for the items of my first projects to arrive in the mail!
Thank you so much! All your videos have been so helpful. I’m new to resin and have been trying to learn how to mix acrylic paints with it. This was so helpful!! You explain things so well and the visual part helps so much!
I'm new to working with resin. I love your comparison videos. Perfect for me. They answer a lot of questions that I have and things I would never think of until it's too late. Thank you 👍
Pebeo vitrail colours are fantastic! They are clear or opaque, they are so pigmented that i only use a teenie bit on a toothpick. They're artist colours, so they're easy to combine to get just the right shade. (Not that that is key for you, but cheap stuff always goes muddy). Theyre much more affordable than resin pigments. They hit the right balance of cost and quality for me. I use mostly UV resin, but it acts very similarly to two part resins, and I've seen others use them in two part resin.
Thank you Steve! I'm just getting started with coloring resin and the information you provided was awesome. Gonna go grab some eye shadow and try it out :-)
Thanks for the comprehensive video. I'm fairly new to 2 part epoxy, having used UV resin more. I like how the epoxy allows for use of opaque mix-ins. I have used glitter, mica powder, and glow in the dark powder. I tried some cheap alcohol ink, but it was so cheap, i did not get good results unless i used so much that the cured resin piece stayed somewhat soft.
The 2nd bar w/mica powder is quite a nice shade of red and the shine, so nice! Well, I certainly got something out of this. The translucence of the alcohol ink is subtle enough for something behind it, and like candy, 🍬I thought of a jolly rancher, lol, I think I'll give it a try.
I've just started using resin and found thar acrylic paint changes colour when u add it! But I'm loving doing resin craft. I think I've finally found the craft I love x
Just wanted to comment to say 👋. Thank you for the very informative videos. I haven't started pouring my resin yet. However I do feel more prepared after watching your videos. My cats even like watching with me.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR POSTS IN MY GROUP, "ART ADDICT'S FROM AROUND THE WORLD" ... I'M THRILLED TO HAVE YOU AND ALL OF YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEOS, THEY ARE VERY HELPFUL FOR ALL MY MEMBERS, MANY THANKS MY FRIEND...
THANKYOU, I loved watching this video as I am just in the process of purchasing my assortment of resin products and I'm so confused with all the different products which are available but this video and lots of your other ones have really helped me to work out what is going to be the best for me to buy and try, I will definitely be watching out for more of your videos 😁.
It seems you appear with the answers to all my questions, daily! This helped so much along with a previous video concerning bubbles! Thanks for knowing what and sharing 🙏🏾. You even demonstrate with the same molds I’m using! How do you make the 2 sided pendants? Is it resin meets resin. 🤗. I’ll try and show you some of my first stuffs.
Thank you so much for the video and the time it took you to make it. I have tried some of the things you use and not trade some of them. I have never used alcohol ink, but I do kind of like that transparent look of it for certain things. I have used one thing that you didn’t try, but I’ve probably used in the past to get a very bright, beautiful, white white I tried putting Windsor and Newton Ink. I just had an idea as I wrote this and thought maybe I would try the Windsor and Newton white designer gouache, which is also very white, but I’ve never tried it in resin. I’ll let you know if it works and how it looks. I must say that I just happened upon your video when I was looking for different things to color resin and I just love your easy, unhurried style. I do not love to be rushed about so I thank you for your teaching style.
Thanks Steve, I just started with resin. If I have a question that needs to be answered I check to see if you made a video on it before I watch anyone else. You are easy to understand and a joy to watch. Thank you very informative. Take care, be safe, try to stay healthy and happy.
Hi there I have found its easier and cheaper to buy the silicon cup cake holder for mixing small amounts of resin in so once ur finished just put under lamp and wipe out
Yes it was helpful to see how different types of dye look in resin, but I think it would have better to show with all the same colors, like you did for first 3
Thanks Steve for a very interesting video - just what I was needing. I have a range of bulk printer inks and I have tried using the black and it seems to work ok. I'll probably try the other colours some time and even try mixing them to get intermediate colours. Maybe you could also try it and make a video. Thanks again.
Very useful video! You might consider putting a light source behind your samples as you show them. I could tell the totally transparent ones, but was wondering how much light some of the others would allow to pass through (the idea being to back light an item). Ditto on comments regarding the fading of alcohol inks :)
thanks a lot, it was really helpful info. I´d normally use a couple of drops of pen ink for my resin projects, but it tends to soften the result a bit. Either way, I like that the color ends up being transluscend
Hi Steve, this was excellent as are all your videos. Being a papercrafter I have excessive embossing powders so I tried a few, the cheap and mid priced brands worked brilliantly, however not so with the dearer brands, I found.
Hi Stev I am a first time user of resin and I have found your videos very helpful I was wondering if you can use air drying nail varnish and UV light curing nail varnish in resin would love to have your thoughts on this, thanks.
I gotta buy that red paint, it’s so beautiful. I have the most issues with alchol inks making my Piece end of very sticky and rubbery. I don’t have this issue with mica or paint. What could I be doing wrong ??! 😓
Thank you Steve!! Again you were very informative and helpful, as all your videos are!!! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Santa brought you more art materials haha!
I haven't tried food coloring yet, I will have to give them a shot. I just started a new test board with my alcohol inks. I like to use my half sphere mold to make all the testers the same size, I can do 6 colors at a time. Yesterday I used micas with 2 part resin, and then I tried some of the alcohol inks I had not tried yet; they all came out hard and clear. I then tried the rest of the alcohol inks with UV resin, and they are all still a bit sticky. I know that when I used mica colors with UV resin it didn't work- they hardened on the exteriors and then the mica would block the rest of the UV from getting through, leaving a squishy center...which a child in my Sunday school just HAD to press until it squirted like a pimple. I had used resin colorants with the uv which made translucent samples in the past, nice and hard and am surprised that the alcohol inks left things sticky. Let me know if you want my web addy to see my work, I won't post it w/o your permission.
cheep eyeshadow frome the doller store dose work really well but you have to make sure you grind it up really well because it has a tendency to clump. also I'm busting out my acrylic paint for my next pOUR! I bought want an Opequ look but all I have is mika and translucent ink
Thank you for posting this tutorial it is a great resource for someone who is just starting out with resins. I am making wood and resin charcuterie boards and one thing everyone is concerned about is whether the combination of resin and wood is food safe and my research says once the resin is cured it is food safe. I like the look of the sample you made with the micro glitter and I would like to try it in one of my charcuterie boards but I am worried the glitter may come off in the food. Can you advise what you think in regards to some glitter made coming off ?
I found this very informative as I am new to resin art. Do you think things like gel/uv nail polish or acrylic nail powder could be used to colour resin? 🤔 Thank you for sharing your craft with us. 😊🙏
I’ve just bought my first resin and silicone form. I can’t buy glitter in any shop around my flat but I found glitter glue. Do you think I can just add it to resin, or it will affect my resin badly?

Another great tutorial! It helps so much when you dont have a manual ! It's nice when the "master" shares with the "pupil"!😊💛
THIS! This video answered so many questions.
I came running back to this video to watch again after watching the spray paint. Thank you
Great video! I use chalk ive crushed in my resin. Can even get glow chalk and glitter chalk. Thanks
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Sidewalk chalk works nicely as well, and it is easier to crush than blackboard chalk.

Never stop making videos !
I am new at using expoxy. I have learned a lot . From watching you videos. Want to know how to color it and found out a lot

The Food colorant really surprised me. I never used food coloring because it scared me. Thanks
I think food coloring gels may work better than water 💧 based im actually going to try it now.. thank you I was wondering about food coloring
@@kristiemorales7763 how did the gel food colour turn out?

I grind up chalk pastels-it gives a glazed look, and the larger particles sink to the bottom. Very rustic!
