    My theory with the frogs is that they are either an inside joke or some sort of signature of a designer or group of designers.

    • @Ratedgforgtfo
      @Ratedgforgtfo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      This is exactly my thought. Wasn't there a designer that would hide a piece with his initials on it, or something similar to that idea?

    • @Thinginator
      @Thinginator 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I can't remember where, but I'm pretty sure I remember a designer being interviewed mentioning they like putting frogs in sets because they just like the frog piece.
      There are plenty of designers who like adding personal touches... there's one Technic set designer who tries to make orange sets as often as possible, and another set designer who likes adding references to Rock Raiders as well as pieces previously exclusive to that theme.

    Correction. The ABS plastic used to make LEGO is recyclable, and LEGO grinds and reuses sprue and mis moulds throughout their processes. So, a million excess frogs would have just been added back to the line to be reused as raw plastic.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      LEGO also maintains an inventory of pieces, they don't just make every piece to order. That's how they have excess available for online Pick-A-Brick. So what's more likely is that, if the frogs _were_ overproduced, they probably just kept them in bulk inventory and then held off on producing them for an extended period of time. No need to get rid of them.
      The existence of online Pick-A-Brick debunks any claims that LEGO utilizes JIT at the production level, because in order to be able to special order injection molded parts like that on demand you HAVE to have inventory on-hand to sell from. Injection molding has very low per-unit costs for parts but VERY high tooling costs per die, so there's no sense in offering a service to make just one part to order even if that part is also mass produced.

    My theory on the abundance of frogs is that Lego is giving the designers a small bonus every time they manage to think of a new use of frogs based on how interesting and creative it is

    As someone who works for LEGO and makes the bricks, the theory about over abundance of frogs is not true. LEGO uses the LEAN concept and Just-In-Time principle, we do not store overproduction, if LEGO creates too many of an element, they get discarded, regrinded and reused or sold to third party vendors.

      If you got proof then I recommend you make a video yourself proving or debunking some of these theories. Also last time I checked, plastic can be melted down, no need to fully grind

    • @tripleglostercheese
      @tripleglostercheese 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      You do need to regrind the plastic first, then melt it down. If not, you can run into a lot of problems during melting process giving you poor quality material. Plus it's just inefficient, regrind is denser than just filling a bag or box with old parts as you don't get the same air gaps. It's pretty much standard practice for manufacturers to just grind down, melt, and reuse excess or out of spec parts. Material is expensive (in my old job 3 hours was £7k of material), and it gives you a buffer if just-in-time fulfillment falls through and you need to go a day or so without new supply.
      Plus, LEGO is known to be a Lean Six Sigma company, and LSS hates waste. So I'd believe it

    I worked for a time in LEGO House. And I can say there is no where in that building where there would be space to hide a million LEGO frogs. The building can be a bit of a maze sure. But only used for the functionality of keeping the house running. There is no secret storage or any of the sort. And I also find that idea silly in general because the house was expensive enough to build. So doing more expenses to expand it for storage that just sits there and needs upkeep and staff which doesn't make any bonuses for the experience to create more economy for the house.. It just doesn't make sense.

    The phenomenon that the last one is about doesn't really exist, and is much more easily explained by LEGO refining their box design, and their shifting focus (at the high end) towards adults, who are buying these LEGO sets as a premium collector's item (I wonder what the C in UCS stands for lol); not as toys to play with, but as model kits that will get displayed statically on a shelf, and the minimalist, flat black design of most UCS boxes is supposed to reflect that (a "this is a Premium Product for Serious Adults" sort of vibe). This more streamlined look has definitely bled over a little into the boxart for non-UCS Star Wars sets, and in the last few years, they've clearly deliberately moved away from backgrounds that have too many specific, identifiable details (like other ships, buildings, landmarks, etc) that aren't part of the set itself. Naturally, there's a lot less stuff in the background to explode, and LEGO probably doesn't want to show parts of their actual set blowing up, but the laser fire still shows up (for example, 75348: Mandalorian Fang Fighter vs TIE Interceptor from 2023). And you only have to go back to 2021 to find plenty of explosions with the slightly busier boxart style (75300: Imperial TIE Fighter, for one). Even UCS has had sets as recently as 2018 with the super actiony boxart with other fighters and lasers and explosions in the background (75181: Y-Wing Starfighter).
    Accidentally sent myself down a rabbit hole with this one lol

    The idea that a manufacturing error overproduced frogs can be debunked by considering that lego pieces are not dyed, they are created in the color that they are. If it was a manufacturing error, we'd have a million frogs of one color, but that's simply not the case, the frogs come in a bunch of different colors, so they'd have to be produced per set. If we use Occam's Razor, the more believable explanation is just that the frogs are a more versatile piece than most people consider

    In the whimsical world of LEGO, there exists a clandestine group known as the Amphibuilders. This society believes that frogs are the true architects of the universe, and they secretly place LEGO frogs in various sets as a tribute to their amphibious inspirations. According to their lore, each frog is a talisman that brings creativity and balance to the builder, ensuring that every construction is imbued with a touch of froggy wisdom. So next time you find a LEGO frog, know that it’s not just a cute addition, but a symbol of a deeper connection to the cosmos, as per the Amphibuilders’ grand design. 🐸✨ Have an awesome day!💥From Fun At Home (Hot Wheels, Lego, Cards, Stamps & collectables)👍

    1) It's a small, simple piece compared to most lego animals, making it cheaper to produce en masse;
    2) It's surprisingly versatile (it's been used to represent a pile of shaving cream, cherry blossoms, and knots on wood, among other things)
    3) frogs are just inherently funny

    A little more detective work could be done on the 'oops theory' of frog production. If you presume, beyond the original green translucent ones, with the regular green 10,000 run mistake, is there a corresponding number of sets slated for green frogs only? Do the numbers of green frogs only per sets match the overrun numbers speculated on? In other words, did they have to make additional green frogs?

    I don’t remember what video I watched but I learned a year or 2 ago that designers love to leave a mark in each set they design. One such designer started putting a frog in their sets, at first it was natural and then it became a challenge for that designer. AFAIK, it’s just for that designer, that’s it. Other designers have different markers.

    The frog thing doesn't really work due to the fact they woyld only need the green frog so the use of pink/gold frogs doesn't make sense

      I would say it wasn't enough frogs, a million frogs wouldn't go very far in a year's worth of sets
